Remove recovery partition for more space - Microsoft Surface

Since the recovery partition takes up ~5 gigs of space. Has anyone tried to create a USB backup of the backup image and then merging the recovery partition with the main OS partition? Is that possible?

Great question - wondering this as well.

Mine is only 3.5gb, I think this is a very risky way to gain a couple of gigs, surely if your that short getting rid of the page file will gain you another 2 gigs. Or you could get a class 10 64gb micro sd then mklink /j it to any location you need ie music photos etc. Personally I would recommend doing a lot of tests first.

If you did that, how would you recover? I mean, its not like WinRT is available as a download. Can you even ghost image?!

I plugged in a 16gb usb stick that i bought for $11 yesterday into my Surface and created a recovery from there. I'm still yet to figure out a way to restore from it. More importantly, how to boot into the advance options on a cold boot to restore from the usb recovery stick is what im interested in.

And from my experience, you also need to do it while the recovery drive is inserted into the USB port. I was expecting to see a prompt asking me to insert the recovery drive, but that prompt never came.
Finally, after plugging in the recovery drive, holding down the Volume Down key and pressing the Start button, it booted directly from the recovery drive with a light-blue screen asking me to choose a language.

Even if we will have nvlash someday you will need to have working fastboot mode on your device,if not nvflash would be useless to you.
How did you flash recovery?
Did you do anything other then boot it up after flashing?
Can you connect using adb or fastboot?

The problem is that it just wont leave the very first boot screen. Unless there is a way to fix it in APX mode that does not require already being set up through the device (which is possible see this) and knowing the secure boot key there is no way to access recovery or fastboot. Until we know the Secure Boot Key I have a bad feeling its not fixable. And god knows how long it will take them to release that. I do not understand how releasing this information to the public could impact their company, or why even have them in the first place. I paid for the device, I should be able to access every part or it.

[Q] Can not enter APX mode. Bricked?

I posted this in general as well, but figured I'd post it in Q&A.
I was going to install the Revolution rom and downloaded the super wipe. I ran it through Clockwork-mod (mistake) and didn't realize that I can't mount my external SD card in CWM. After running super wipe the tablet only boots into recovery. I can not get my tablet to boot into APX mode. On my PC it does not even show that the tablet is connected. My /data is missing completely. Is there a way to fix this? Any help would be appreciated.
Edit: Running CWM Touch 5.8.0.2

if the PC isn't seeing anything at all when you plug it in while it's in recovery, then it's a connection issue. Try another PC, and if it's still not seen, it's probably your cable, which is why you can't see the tablet in APX mode as well

Then it's a timing/driver issue of getting into APX mode and getting it recognized. You can't wipe or remove or brick APX mode, without seriously trying. It would involve booting the tablet using some very hacked script to use the primary partition table instead of the use accessible secondary table, as APX is stored in a partition that is more or less untouchable
Just plug it into your computer, and hold down power and volume up. Hold it down for like a solid 45 seconds, even if it keeps rebooting, If after you hold power and volume up, the screen eventually goes black, then you're in APX. Open up device manager on your pc and look for any new or unrecognized devices, if nothing then try a different usb port. But a superwipe script definitely did not alter your apx mode, I can promise you that
And if that still doesn't work, try a different PC. If that still doesn't work, then I'm still betting it's the cable. When's the last time you used it for data transfer, and not charging? They do go bad. If recovery is mounted and successfully booting, then its ADB server is running. Which, if you make a working connection to a PC, will be seen
Hi ultmontra08,
Are you sure it isn't the cable?
I ran into this issue as well, I was stuck in recovery mode http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1913905
If the cable is charging the tablet, it doesn't mean that it can't be defective still.
The computer should detect the device in recovery mode and apx mode. In my issue it didn't detect my device in recovery mode at all.
Until I got a new cable, I was able to see my device show up in Device Manager while it was in recovery mode.
I was able to narrow it down to being the cable because it would not show up on 3 different computers.

I caved and purchased a new sync cable from amazon and it fixed the issue of not being seen by the PC! I've seen other posts about cables going bad, but I didn't think it would do any good. I just restored the newest stock image and I'm going to keep it there until I get a Google Nexus tablet in the future. It's interesting that these cables go bad. I've had the same iPod usb cable for six years and have never had a problem with it.

Please Please Help - Flashing Problem

im aware that this has been covered many times, however i just dont know what to do.
The problem is this, i can boot up into CWM screen, and see the sub menus that are on that screen, like mount sd, advanced etc etc. I can navigate through those menus as well. The problem im having, is that im unable to access my internal storage, and when i put an SD card in, i cant see that either. i would like to return to the stock Rom, as i bought this off a friend, who gave up trying to fix the issue, as it seems like a bad Rom was flashed or it was incorrectly done.
So, without being able to access both internal and external storage, im basically struggling. What makes it more worse for me, is that when i plug the USB cable in, i hear the sound it makes, but the pc says device not recognised.
in CWM, i can see the internal files stored on the internal memomry, if i go through the menu there. Is there a way to get my pc to recognise my device, and how can i go about this with no access to both internal and external storage. Im desperate for help. I just need a guide, as i dont know how to flash, as this was bought from a friend.
ive already given it to somebody, but he says it could be hardware failure, could this be right, and if it is, how do i know which part of the hardware is damaged? :crying:
The other problem is that power button doesnt work, so i can get it switched on and into CWM, but cant select any of the menus. Is there a way to get it sorted some other way.
Thanks
Wow, unique situation you got there!
You're going to need to use EasyFlasher: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1688012
It will let run some simple commands through your PC into your plugged-in Transformer.
As the EasyFlasher thread states, you'll first need to download the APX driver (link in thread) to establish a successful connection.
I've used EasyFlasher a handful of times just for fun, and from what i can remember you shouldn't need the use of your power button to get successfully booted into a ROM using this.

Cheers, lets hope that works for me. I just want to push the stock Rom back, and then i can download an app where i can just maybe use the volume buttons to wake the device again, and also lock it until i get the button repaired. Right now, having no access to the internal or external storage, and with no power button to use the whole Power + Volume up/down thing, i need something to just push the Rom on to the Tab in another way.
Thanks:good:

Help - this is a difficult one

Okay from the top, have OPO that had paranoid 4.6 Beta 2 working just fine. Was playing with settings(dumb idea) and changed the runtime to ART like i have on multiple other phones just to try it out. Phone rebooted and upgraded all the apps like it should, but about 5 seconds after it booted, screen froze for a second and then it rebooted. Once it rebooted it was up for 5 seconds again and then rebooted again. thus started a continues reboot loop.
Using the five seconds i had i was able to race through settings and switch the runtime back to dalvik. this caused the normal reboot and fixing of apps however once it finished the boot process it began the reboot loop again and there was nothing i could do to stop it.
I booted to recovery and attempted to reflash the last update, that failed.
attempted to wipe cache and dalvik cache and that failed.
attempted factory data reset, that failed
NOW is when i made a mistake, on TWRP i checked system wipe as well as data and cache. Wiped everything.
So, phone was then entirely devoid of OS which is a slight problem. I was able to get into fastboot however and flash cm11s which i figured would fix it, false. Now when it boots the system ui crashes over and over continuously and it wont become stable. Went back to recovery but my twrp was gone and i just had cyanogenmod simple recovery. attempted to get to fastboot mode but its apparently nonexistent, i tried every combination of commands possible to get there but cant. so now im stuck with an unusable OS and a useless recovery and no way to get to fastboot mode that im at least aware of... if there are any other details that could help feel free to help, ill post pictures once i figure out a way to do that.
please, for the love of God, help me.
If you gold the power button for about 15 seconds then it should turn off. Then hold volume up and then press and hold power while still holding volume up for a few seconds and it should boot fastboot mode. Try erasing userdata from there to see if you can recover from the crashing.

I tried that a hundred times, the problem is once the screen turns off, if you keep holding vol up it never comes back on, its something i have never seen before and its exxtremely frustrating. Its like fastboot doesnt exist.
I wiped out everything on my Oneplus two months ago by mistake. Then my phone wont boot up because it had nothing in it except the TWRP. I tried EVERYTHING, to load a Rom into the phone, but it didn't work. It goes through the motion of loading a Rom into your phone and when you are about to hit the 100% level, it says FAILED. It wants you to check the debugging which you can't because your phone wont boot up. Anyways, I purchased a micro usb flash drive and loaded up the Rom into flash drive from my comp's usb. Then I connected it to my phone from TWRP via the micro usb port. After it loaded up the Rom from the flash drive, it booted up. Hope that works.

The latest twrp supports mtp and you can use adb push to push the file to sdcard. Its really worth learning.

You should let go of the power button after the device turns off. Then vol up+power when the phone is off. This is different than what I read for the device but it works for getting me in fastboot.

Disabling it will not fix your issue. My thread tells you what needs to happen. Generally when people decide to try new ideas without proper knowledge is when they get into trouble

My guess is, recovery is bad and system is bad.
I cannot get any connection to the device from PC. Once I got ???? when listing fastboot devices, but usually I just don't get any reaction in syslog.
Switching off only works from bootloader. All other options cannot be switched off, have to wait until battery runs out.
any idea?
ps. will fetch a few more cables in case the MicroUSB cable is bad.
