[Q] Unlocking and Misc Questions - Asus Transformer TF700

I've had this tablet for a couple weeks now, and like many others, have not had the greatest experience as far as speed goes. Of course, while the I'm confident that unlocking and flashing CleanROM and Clemsyn's kernel onto my tab will make it much faster, I'm wondering whether it's really worth it. For those of you who have done so, how much has your experience differed from before unlocking to after? I rooted and flashed over a custom ROM onto my old G2, but only when I knew I was getting a replacement sometime in the near future. Worried about hard bricking especially because my tablet is without any of the numerous hardware defects that have been reported. In addition, some minor questions:
1) I'm not sure if it's clarified precisely in a guide, but how does one manually push OTA updates onto the tab after unlocking? I never had to worry about that on my phone.
2) Is there a significant increase in I/O speeds after unlocking, custom ROM, and custom kernel? Or is the poor hardware still going to bottleneck I/O speeds regardless of how much power is pushed to the CPU?
3) Currently using Tasker to manage my CPU. Will a custom kernel eliminate the need for it? (Actually, I still don't have a very clear idea of what a kernel is, if anyone could clarify).
4) TWRP or CWM? Didn't have a particularly bad time with CWM on my phone, but the forum mostly suggests TWRP?
5) Chances of a soft/hard brick? I'm pretty sure I can't downgrade to get NVFlash, and I don't want to end up with a $500 brick.
Thanks to any help you guys can provide and sorry if any of it is a repost.

I've in the past downed the appropriate firmware file from Asus to a desktop PC.
Connected the tab thru USB...unzipped the download file to the tabs internal sd or the external micro card.
Usually the tablet will detect an update sometimes without a reboot as though it's an OTA.
From there it's yay or nay...
2) Is there a significant increase in I/O speeds after unlocking, custom ROM, and custom kernel? Or is the poor hardware still going to bottleneck I/O speeds regardless of how much power is pushed to the CPU?

Yes!
In my own personal case a 75% or 90% increase maybe higher.
I'm going off benchmarks here..
Sadly of course we can't change the insides.
3) Currently using Tasker to manage my CPU. Will a custom kernel eliminate the need for it? (Actually, I still don't have a very clear idea of what a kernel is, if anyone could clarify).

No experience with Tasker myself. I don't see a need for CPU management with Clemsyn's latest kernel modifications.
Also CleanROM 2.4 is running very fast by itself...in my opinion.
* A kernel is the framework or bridge that any OS uses to bring software and hardware together.
The kernel manages resources in memory for input\output from applications to machine processing (as I understand it.)
Generally the kernel has to load into memory on boot up to pull everything together.
4) TWRP or CWM? Didn't have a particularly bad time with CWM on my phone, but the forum mostly suggests TWRP?

I think this would be a preference.
I had to use CWM (non touch) once to root inside JellyBean using the ADB bridge.
Once rooted I went right back to TWRP 2.3.1.0
Merely a pref...I was afraid I was going to screw something up using CWM (non-touch) because I had to navigate with the volume +\- and power button.
My own fear of "fat-fingering" those tiny buttons came into play here...
5) Chances of a soft/hard brick?

Many will recommend NV and rightly so...it would be nice to have the insurance in case one had to bring the tablet back from the grave!
Thinking my tablet upped to .30 before NV Flash showed up.
Most likely worth the trouble for sure.
All in all I believe unlocking, flashing then seeing the benefits would be worth the miniscule risks.
Very little is cast in stone, however many have gone before and are happy tablet people after perusing the development section and choosing their poison!

These or variations of the questions get asked quite often.
We don't mind answering ... I'm retired so I have lots of free time anyhoo ...

...as my sister the teacher used to say.

I will probably replicate some of Thats_OK's thorough answer here, but I will go through it sequentially... just because I can.

Sweet Lord, the difference is day and night. I'm not a benchmark guy, so I wouldn't be the one to trust when throwing around numbers, but it IS significant without a single doubt.

Mine is free of anything out of the order aswell, but the upside is you don't have to contend with any special issues either.
In addition, some minor questions:

I think Scott Crossler's guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1938129 is best since it contains a few screenshots too. You'd only need step 1, but it's a nice start. The same guide is also applicable if you want to flash a custom ROM, so no need to put more in here.
2) Is there a significant increase in I/O speeds after unlocking, custom ROM, and custom kernel? Or is the poor hardware still going to bottleneck I/O speeds regardless of how much power is pushed to the CPU?

As I said before: I think you'll be amazed -- I know I was. I have an SGS2, it's nice and smooth and I wanted that same feeling with the 700. I was happy with it in stock state, but I will admit I expected more of it. Now, 100% happy (CleanROM 2.4, not even Clemsyn's kernel yet). Not 99.9% -- a full 100%.
3) Currently using Tasker to manage my CPU. Will a custom kernel eliminate the need for it? (Actually, I still don't have a very clear idea of what a kernel is, if anyone could clarify).

A kernel is... hehehe, wow... is the piece of code that translates any commands programs give to the hardware of your device, shoving data around in the process and making the results of data processing available system-wide. This is a crutch explanation and very simplified, but I'm sure some Googling will enlighten you much more. <faceslap for not reading your questios fully before starting to answer>
4) TWRP or CWM? Didn't have a particularly bad time with CWM on my phone, but the forum mostly suggests TWRP?

Preference, as Thats_OK said. He is a TWRP guy, I'm a CWM guy. Both will serve you well as long as you stay up to date and only use the newest versions. Not a possiblity to go hugely wrong here, you'll just have to try what you like. I have had CWM on my SGS2 for ages, and Touch CWM is available for the 700 -- so these two aspects made it a clear go-to recovery for me. YMMV.
5) Chances of a soft/hard brick? I'm pretty sure I can't downgrade to get NVFlash, and I don't want to end up with a $500 brick.

Depends on which firmware your 700 currently runs. If you're a sensible guy and know you have to read, and maybe even hold back a few hours to maybe even a day or two till we have put new things through their paces -- having Nvflash available, the risk is negligible to us -- you'll be fine. I've been flashing around before Nvflash was even available and I didn't give that much though, to be honest. The risks are not that big to start with as long as you can follow procedures to the letter (or now how to recover from most errors), and Nvflash only makes them even smaller.

You're getting away with it, since you 1) asked nicely and 2) only your first question was a duplicate. Hahaha! Just kidding. You asked some questions that were new to me, so then I am not inclined to be annoyed. (I'll admit I have been less than nice the last few weeks. Santa Clause has a slightly less heavy load this year. )

[Q] Noob ?s: New to Rooting, Not new to IT

Hi guys - Great website. I love the amount of information being exchanged here. I am new to the rooting environment, but I am not new to IT. I have an IT career, some entry level programming, SQL scripting, and have modded playstations and xboxes previously so I should be able to follow much of the technical talk.
I just purchased a Samsung Charge and have completed the one click root and have confirmed that I have root on ED1. So my questions are (please link to thread if answered elsewhere):
How do I determine which mod/rom is the best and safest to use? Gummy, Altered beast, etc?
Are any gingerbread based mods out or are they all froyo based for the Charge? What is the newest out and is there a projected release schedule?
How do I get the wireless hot stop working for free once I am rooted? Do I have to install a ROM?
Is the Odin application the best way to update the ROMs?
Is the ROM the OS update and the kernel the BIOS update?
It looks like there is an issue doing backups with Charge Mods, so how do I backup my phone? (it looks like the ability to backup has been removed from some mods)
So I am rooted. What are the next steps I need to follow: 1) Backup (how) 2) install new OS ROM????
Thanks for your time.

Pretty much just by reading their threads and seeing what issues people are having. That being said, the Charge ROMs are all pretty new, so safest is to just find a rooted version of stock, which you seem to have accomplished. The other ROMs are trying to improve on things by doing things such as "debloating" (removing useless stuff added by Verizon), etc., but this can have unintended consequences. For instance, with Altered Beast, you'll see he released fixed versions of stock apps which broke.
Are any gingerbread based mods out or are they all froyo based for the Charge? What is the newest out and is there a projected release schedule?

They're all Froyo for now. I'd guess a Gingerbread version will be out within the next month or so, depending on how many devs are working on it. I think Gummy is slightly newer than Altered Beast, but that could change any second. Actually, the newest at this moment is the OTA (Over The Air) release from Verizon last night, EE4.
How do I get the wireless hot stop working for free once I am rooted? Do I have to install a ROM?

You just need to install an app. Search the market, or search the forums for what others are using. They're getting a little more difficult to find as Verizon has started blocking some of them from their version of the market.
Is the Odin application the best way to update the ROMs?

Right now it seems to be. Though once you use that and have CWM (ClockWork Mod) installed, you might be able to update using CWM. Still a little early to tell.
Is the ROM the OS update and the kernel the BIOS update?
Click to collapse
Pretty close. ROM, as we usually use the term, refers to the Boot ROM, which is the first code run, and essentially the O/S, though some ROMs aren't a complete replacement for all of it. The kernel isn't quite as equivalent, but that's true to the extent that it handles communication between the software and the hardware.
It looks like there is an issue doing backups with Charge Mods, so how do I backup my phone? (it looks like the ability to backup has been removed from some mods)

There's an issue with doing backups through CWM, but you can still use something like Titanium Backup. What do you want to backup? If it's just your software, settings, etc., that should be fine.
So I am rooted. What are the next steps I need to follow: 1) Backup (how) 2) install new OS ROM????

I have the ED1 versions rooted with gingerbreak and used root explorer to change the script from ED1 to ED2. Everything is working good and launcher pro is making it look better, but is it safe to load altered beast or other roms using Odin or will it mess it up? I would like to get CWM on it to go straight into bootloader like I did with the Incredible.
The kernel shouldn't be related to a BIOS in a PC, that would be your bootloader. A kernel is part of an Operating system. Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X all have kernels. The kernel, as I understand it, is sort of like the middle man between the software you "see" and the hardware. Drivers are a core part of a kernel, but aren't the only thing in the kernel. A ROM, is the OS, as a kernel is included in any ROM. The ROM will consist of the applications included, be it themed applications or custom built ones, and a kernel.
Keep in mind this is a large generalization of the whole subject, but I think its a good overview.

You can use Odin to install Altered Beast and you'll be fine. you might want to wait a couple of days to see what happens with this EE4 release, though.

not to be a downer, but i wouldnt put any eta's on anything gingerbread related...my overly optimistic guess (based on no inside knowledge) for anything official would be late august...but knowing the vzw/samsung combo (regardless of the droid branding) #gingergate could be on until late Fall/Christmas

I wouldn't really expect an official Samsung Gingerbread ROM until next year. They are incredibly slow. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see an unofficial version well before then.

Incredibly slow, yet the DROID Charge just received it's 2nd OTA update in 1 month from release, and the Fascinate just got it's 6th/7th OTA update in the past 8 months as well, and as far as I know, the international SGS has had a similar number of updates come out for it as well. The problem isn't Samsung producing the updates (anymore), it's getting the carriers test them and submit feedback in a timely manner.
Given that the SGS line is getting Gingerbread over the summer from most reports I've read, I'd expect the Charge to get Gingerbread sometime late summer/fall, as well as the rest of the US lineup of SGS phones.

OK, thanks! I have only had it a day and I have not played with ODIN, so it scares me to death. I can say that with one day of trying it, the GPS is horrible! It had me over 2 miles off.
I am not sure why the below happened, but I did soft brick. I restarted the whole process and it is moving along now so please disregard.
Question. I am using Odin to install alteredbeast. I held down the volume key until after i clicked start on the ROM. It has been working for about 5 minutes and on my phone i can see a downloading icon with a "AX_TIMEOUT" in red in the top left. Did I screw up?

You only have to hold the down volume button for a few seconds, until you get to the yellow downloading screen. Im not sure if that has an effect, but I'd start over. Turn off any antivirus, plug in to your rear USB ports, and try again.

They're doing well on the bugfixes, I'll give them that. But with how long we waited for updates for my wife's Epic, I'm not super keen on Samsung's update schedule. They ranked last on the list of manufacturers updating to newer versions of software. That being said, I'm hoping with this as their Verizon flagship they'll stay on top of it.

What does prime 1.6 offer over stock 3.1 root?

I haven't flashed to any Tom's yet, but this seems to be the most popular. Why is that? I looked at the change log and I don't understand what I would be gaining I guess.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
same too me, I tried it over 3.1, what I experienced:
- browser little bit slower
- more SOD
- nothing real extra feature
I have to use a custom rom for a couple of reasons:
1) My stock rom is the Chinese verison, which means no google apps or google sync. Without google, it's just not android.
2) I need the Chinese input methods. I would normally switch to the USA stock rom, but it doesn't have Chinese input. Prime does/did, Chinese handwriting input is MIA, but I'll sure it will be taken care of.
I choose to use a custom rom for these reasons:
3) I don't like excess crap on my computer. I can modify a custom rom before I install it, mostly just removing apps that I will never use.
4) Root! I love freedom on my computer. Root lets me do things. All kinds of neat things: block ads, increase speed on sd card, delete/modify system apps and directories, and lots more. Look into it, it is fun.
5) Overclock. Prime doesn't have it, but you can add a kernal that does. I currently don't overclock, but as the Tegra 2 ages, i will overclock it. I'm specifically waiting for a rom with a high GPU overclock. There is one out there that currently does have a minor GPU overclock.
6) Clockwork Recovery. Backup, restore, switch roms, clear cache and more.
Why I choose Prime:
7) Dock battery meter in the taskbar.
8) Reboot/recovery options for power button.
After looking through the current selection of roms available, I choose Prime. But I keep my eye on revolver and Clemsyn.

How do you not? OP clearly states that there are optimizations made to increase load times etc etc.
No, op states "better user experience" which is very vague. Also I'm not having any slow load times, everything is pretty zippy.

Last time I flashed a Tom he punched me in the face...
One reason I haven't seen mentioned would also be themes, but it is still early in the game, there are few options. Custom Roms are generally just optimized better, though the Transformer doesn't have nearly the bloat some Android devices have making them almost essential...
Honestly once you learn, it is such an easy process that flashing different roms/kernels and trying them is the only real way to know what is best for you and your usage.

Then why are you worrying about ROMs? It's obvious you want some of that Baconcomb so just get it already.
Honestly, I don't know why people ever need to "beg" you to try something. If you're happy with what you got already, then be happy.

If you don't want to take my word for it, then don't. I'm not going to beg you to do it.

Wow...
He asked what was the difference between stock and Prime, and you went off in another direction. He wasn't asking to be "begged" into using Prime nor asking for others to convince him into using Prime at all.
Anyways, I know Prime has a few optimizations, but I don't know if it brings any substantial changes. There's a link to download the power/recovery mod, so I suppose it could be applied to any ROM including rooted stock.
One reason I would like to root my tf101 is to be able to use a USB dongle. But I am waiting for 3.2 to come out before since I just got my tf101.
The stock version is pretty good actually. No major complaints so far.
I hav ebeen using Prime for a while but ASUS stock version is definitely quite good. Even more so for lack of garbageware that so plagues the mobile phones...
Yea I guess I'm in the same camp. I haven't seen a compelling reason to move to a different ROM versus rooted stock. There are too many posts that seem to lead users to believe that a different ROM is the same as root. Remember you can root the stock ROM. The OP is asking what user experience enhancements make Prime (or any other ROM) compelling.
If you read changelog second post it will tell you exactly what's new in the ROM. Many changes are only useful for experienced linux users, but many others are useful for everyone. The nice thing about roms is that most of the things and tweaks are already done for you. If you don't need/care about those changes then there is no point for you to reflash.
Which BXX mod did you get ?
I'm curious because I'm thinking of picking up one of these today ( the guy at Orifice Depot tried to get me to buy an Iconia, but that thing doesn't have anywhere near the support the TF is getting...)....?
Manufacturer's (ASUS included) have to be very careful about their ROM releases so they are thoroughly tested and ready to release to the general public. Consequently they are slower to release updates (i.e. NVidia updates, etc.). Custom ROMs generally consolidate the best and latest releases from various manufacturer's into the most cuttest edge versions you can possibly be running. As you'll notice this can also mean more lock-ups and weird issues since you are getting just-available changes. So if you prefer max stability, stick with the manufacturer's updates. For many of us part of the fun of owning an Android tablet is the rapid pace that custom ROMs are put out and the interesting/quirky things they bring us.

I got a B60 TF and a B60 dock from my local OD this past weekend (Denver, CO).
Prime Vs Stock
Reason why I flashed the Prime Rom. With Prime and a netflix patch I'm able to stream netflix movie. Also now Adhoc connections work. I can Wifi tehther my TF101 with my Driod using the adhoc connection. I can now easily reboot into recovery prior to this going into recovery was a bit tricky. This was not possible even with HC 3.2. Also I don't have to worry about losing root becuase of an OTA update.
I am actually a flashaholic when it comes to flashing roms on my phone. But so far, I haven't come across any compelling reasons to flash custom roms on my transformer. The need to flash roms on phones offer benefits that are non existant on a tablet. For instance, one major reason to flash custom roms on phones is to enable free wifi tethering, which obviously does not apply here. Another reason, as stated above is to remove bloatware. The transformer doesn't really have that. And yet another reason is to be able to update to the latest Android version before the official release. Correct me if i'm wrong but when I looked, the 3.2 update came out officially before any transformer custom roms had it. There are a couple more minor customizations options that I'm not seeing yet being offered by the transformer roms. I am fully aware of the speed enhancements and optimizations that custom roms offer, but considering the custom roms for the transformer are still relatively new (no disrespect or discredit to the devs for their hard work), and considering that even still now, the rooting and flashing methods keep getting outdated and changed, it's too early in this ballgame for me to flash.
I've been lurking the forums here now for a month and finally pulled the trigger, my TF get's here monday.
I have yet to see any reason to flash a custom rom or even root at this point. I'll be rooting it just to say it's rooted and just for a couple of root only programs I have. The custom roms don't really bring anything to the table that this tablet doesn't have. it has the newest version of android with all the bells and whistles. I'm not going to be overclocking. I understand netflix is big for some people, but, from what I have read flashing the fix breaks some video playback. I'm ok to wait for the official netflix patch. A 32gb MicroSD and the 16gb on board space is plenty to store movies on for travel etc. I also have a server I run at home that will stream my entire movie,. TV, and music collections directly to me.
Having the best of the best and the most up to date version of android does have it's perks

Hi guys sorry for the several topics in my subject line but there are several questions that I have.
So I just signed up because I'm a bit confused and I'm quite new to the scene. I actually posted this on another forum which I'm already a member of, but I felt it would be better posting here since this is obviously more specialised.
After reading the rules, I've realised that it's quite hard to do a search for existing topics with my questions. I've already tried to do individual searches on each topic though, with varying success.
I've just rooted my Nexus S (i9023, AUS version) for the first time simply because I wanted to be able to use DroidWall (to only allow certain apps to use data).
1) If I manually update to ICS, will I lose root?
2) Does installing a custom ROM cause you to lose all your data? - I've done some searching on this and it seems to depend. Some do and some don't. I don't quite get it though.
3) Kernels - seem to control battery life and how the operating system runs. This slightly confuses me because it makes me think, what affects battery life more: the kernel or the ROM?
4) Most people like to overclock their phones in the interest of power. Would it be reasonable to underclock it in the interest of battery life? Sometimes I don't think I really need 1GHz.
5) It seems like the OTA for ICS for i9023 has not been released yet but has been for i9020?
I'm trying to find the best 2.3.6 Custom ROM from here but none of these are 2.3.6 based! All of them are 2.3.4 or older. I'm hesitant upgrading to ICS for three reasons:
1) Hasn't been released OTA officially
2) Worried of app compatibility
3) Worried of shorter battery life
For these reasons, I'm looking for a 2.3.6 based custom ROM otherwise I'd be happy to look at ICS custom ROMs.
None of the ICS ROMs seem to have any distinctive features about them, especially after watching the video reviews. It's all pretty much "it's a great ROM that doesn't lag when browsing the web and it's fast". Nothing really distinguishes one from another.
Sorry for the mildly long post, but I'd rather ask as many questions as I can at a time rather than making a couple of threads for each. Hope I can get some help =)
Thanks in advance!
I bought 9023 in hk. Upgraded to ics by ota.
If you want, you may do it manually. Flash the rom by yourself. Ota is no longer available. Check it out at nexusshack.com
I don't have battery problem. But don't know why.

1) If I manually update to ICS, will I lose root?
If it is the update you probably will (not 100% sure), if it is the full OTA you certainly will. But it is not a major issue either way, and i would actually recommend backing up with TB (AND a Nandroid), wiping everything and then installing the Full OTA ROM and just root again, then restore your backup.
2) Does installing a custom ROM cause you to lose all your data? - I've done some searching on this and it seems to depend. Some do and some don't. I don't quite get it though.
They will generally lose any system data, apps, modifications, etc. Titanium Backup will copy over most of it anyway, particularly apps and their settings/data. Keep in mind that you should always have a CWM backup (Nandroid) ready in case something goes wrong.
3) Kernels - seem to control battery life and how the operating system runs. This slightly confuses me because it makes me think, what affects battery life more: the kernel or the ROM?
Both. ROMs can do more or different functions which can cause battery drain. Kernels allow you to change your own settings (most of the time) to actually balance performance and drain. I would say at the moment with ICS, the kernel and the settings you give it is the biggest contributor.
4) Most people like to overclock their phones in the interest of power. Would it be reasonable to underclock it in the interest of battery life? Sometimes I don't think I really need 1GHz.
That is correct. Many people can get the same speed with a lower voltage, lowering battery drain. Others also use something called "LiveOC" and increase the clocks by 10% (or more), changing the bus speed and giving similar speeds to 1000mhz at only 880mhz, again saving power. Just remember every CPU batch has different variations - some can undervolt and overclock like crazy, whereas some struggle with a 5% increase.
5) It seems like the OTA for ICS for i9023 has not been released yet but has been for i9020?
The i9023 and i9020T has been released. The i9020A has not, and the same with the Nexus S 4G (D720 i believe). It sometimes doesnt show up though. Either try a manual command which i can't remember in the dialpad or just update manually (manually is best ).

Lots of words, i'm getting a little confused up there. Anyway, if you are rooted (and i assume your bootloader is unlocked), there is nothing to worry about as long as you backup. I personally love ICS and have no issue with it, as do many others. A minority of people however tend to have some problems, whether its battery or force closes. My experience so far has been that a proper wipe fixes most of these anyway.
ICS is still new. Once Cyanogenmod 9 is officially released i'm sure we'll see much more variety than the same look and feel, as alot is based off their code. And also, practically no phones have ICS yet. I've not found app compatibility a problem though, i think the main gripe is viber (which should work soon).
I hope this can help you, just let us know if there is anything else you're after. Also, there is a TON of information around the site (and Nexus S forums in particular). A good amount of reading and going through a couple of pages of some of these threads can go a long way. That is why you came here after all, isn't it?
I got the OTA for ICS back around 20th Dec 2011, but I chose not to update it because I was going to be away from a computer for a few days and had no backup phone. When I wanted to update it a few days later, the update had disappeared from my phone so I looked it up online. Apparently the OTA disappeared for Nexus S's due to some bugs or incompatibility issues. I've never seen the update come up on my phone since. Even when I go to Settings->About phone->System update, it says "your system is up to date". So I've always been under the impression that ICS for Nexus S (at least for my variant, i9023) has never been re-released to us OTA.
Harbb, thanks for your answers. The only one I'm not so sure about is the underclocking one. It seems a little beyond me in terms of technicality. I am definitely interested in doing it though. Would you be able to tell me if adjusting clock speed requires an app?
I am rooted and bootloader is unlocked (I thought you could only root if bootloader was unlocked?).
So does that mean all these custom ROMs around at the moment are mostly based around Cyanogenmod, which is why they're very similar? As I was saying, I was looking at getting a custom ROM installed and noticed most of them are ICS custom ROMs, and the video reviews all say "this ROM is fast and does not lag when web browsing. It's a great ROM and it's fast and smooth."
The custom ROMs just don't seem to be "promoted" too well because I can't see what makes one better than the other, or what features of one custom ROM are intended to be the standout ones.
I notice you (Harbb) are using Stock ICS 4.0.3 (according to your sig) - so you are not using a custom ROM? Am I able to install a custom ICS ROM without first installing ICS? I am still running 2.3.6 at this point.
Viber does not work at the moment? That's not too bad. I can live with that.
I've done quite a bit of reading so far. It has certainly helped, but still a long way to go, but thanks for giving me a great start!
I will start backing up my apps using TB and CWM (Nandroid)!

Best line i've read in days
I have tried several custom ROMs once they started surfacing but i didn't feel like they gave me anything special enough to switch to right now and Stock is setup and running very nicely. Stock ICS colours are fine and other apps now can provide Notifications Widgets. I havn't noticed any particular differences in speed either.
Brainmasters ICS tweaks, custom kernel and Flavours of ICS runs beautifully. The OTA varies with where it shows up. To force a check, type this in dialer: *#*#checkin#*#* [AKA, *#*#2432546#*#* ]
If you are rooted it won't work anyway. Just update manually. There is no need to currently on ICS to flash custom ICS ROMs. I would advise that when going from GB to ICS though (and often between some custom ROMs) that you go into CWM and do a factory/data wipe and format /system. After backing up of course.
At the moment most are not based on CM9, however several do use bits and pieces of code (ie. notification power widgets) from it. Not sure why most ROM descriptions are the same
First thing i'd consider is getting a custom kernel, and then the NSTools app (market). Lots of stuff to mess around with and full control of the CPU (governors, IO, overclocking, undervolting, etc).

agree with u. for 4.0.3, stock is my favorite, sad to say that.
for 4.0.4, while stock for NS not available, IMM26 ROM ported from NS4G seems good, if you like the stock rom feel.
Hmm I bricked my phone.
I've done the Nandroid and Titanium Backup and have it sitting on my computer ready once I recover this damn thing. Following the backups, I attempted to manually update to ICS with the zip file on this page: http://www.androidcentral.com/how-manually-update-your-gsm-nexus-s-ice-cream-sandwich
Now I'm following these two threads to try and recover the phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1397393
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396056
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20382688&postcount=16
Hopefully I will get this back up and working. I'm still confused as to why it got bricked though. Updated via clockworkmod "update from sdcard" and then rebooted system. After that, it just bricked. Can't get any lights to come up on the device whatsoever. Plugging it in to computer, wall charger, pressing all the buttons, taking the battery out and putting it back in.
Odd. Best of luck getting it working, i'm sure the resurrector will work for you so don't stress too much. That's the right file so i'll probably just put the issue on a bad flash or bad download (wise to hash check before flashing). At this point i'd say it's wise when you get it working again, just flash the Full OTA file, and do a wipe of /data, /cache, /system and /boot beforehand.
Sad to hear about your troubles buddy.
So it looks like everything worked out for me. I managed to restore my phone with the help of the threads above. I have to admit though, the guides given on this forum aren't too "complete" - there's always a step or two missing from the guide that the reader has to figure out themselves. And not all the files are provided in the topics either! I'm also kind of concerned why it seems so many people ended up bricking their phone like that. Quite concerning.
In the end, I managed to reflash the stock ICS ROM for i9023 Nexus S which I found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445635
So I scrapped the one that I downloaded initially from Android Central. The difference in size was surprisingly roughly 30MB (160MB instead of the 130MB Android Central one).
I'm just using stock ICS, but rooted. Downloaded a few apps which require root, but haven't tried adding any mods or kernels. I might look into that later. But it seems like with 4.0.4 coming out, there might be some interesting new additions!
Thanks for all your help!!
Did you flash this ics from stock recovery?

Congratulations on resurrecting it! Are you guys saying that there is a risk of bricking a phone, while installing official update? I did a manual update, 3 weeks ago, unrooted, and ICS has been nothing but amazing for me.
I have a question. In case, I ever brick my I9023 (hope not).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20382688&postcount=16
This post states that I must be running Ubuntu on my PC. Does that mean I can't use Windows? And if I must use Linux, can I just do it with Wubi, or with Online Server?

[Q] What's the best ROM to use at present?

I bought my Charge about a year ago (still no 4G in our area but that's a whole other discussion . . .) and figured I'd wait until the manufacturer warranty expires before rooting my phone.
I glanced over the development page and noticed that JT is still working on ICS but it's not yet fully ready. Does anyone have a recommendation regarding which ROM to root to my phone? It will be the first time I've ever routed a device before but I know how to follow instructions, so I assume I'll be fine.
Any recommendations anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, guys!

Either Tweaked or Eclipse. Essentially, they're our only two choices, but they're both good quality. For kernels, most people like Imnuts' PBJ kernel.
Yeah, I was looking at that one (someone else suggested that one and the transparent ICS theme). It looks like one of the links comes already bundled with the PBJ you mentioned so I'll probably get that one.
One question I did have was regarding EX4. I don't know if I need it or not. I have a stock SDA card but I don't know how to check if it's EX3 or EX4 or if I even need that portion . . . I'd rather not have to wipe my SD card but it's really not all that hard to backup to a computer so I guess it's not a huge deal. I'd rather not do an extra step I don't need to do though.
So yeah, is there anywhere in the forums that talk about EX3 or EX4? I searched in these forums and found a few articles about it but I still don't know if it's something I need or not.

I'm pretty sure EXT4 conversion does not affect external memory. It will only convert the data/dbdata/cache/system partitions to the newer file system. So no need to worry about your SD card. Personally, I would not recommend converting to EXT4 at this point. There is always a chance you can corrupt your internal partitions and brick your device. It is very difficult to hard brick a Charge, but from what I can recall those that have have been a result of a bad ext4 conversion. Ever since the Gingerbread OTA was rolled out, RFS has been more than adequate for the Charge. While you do get higher benchmark scores with EXT4, difference in real world usage is negligible (from my experience).
And Tweaked is by far the best current ROM for this phone. It is hands down the best ROM ever made for the Charge. If Eclipse is ever updated again, I would give that one a chance too.
In my opinion, the only reason to convert to ext4 on EP4 or FP1 is to make nandroid backups work. If you don't intend to use nandroid, no reason to convert.
ext4 definitely has significantly higher I/O throughput, but you'll only see it in benchmarks. You won't see any difference in the real world.
Tweaked gets my vote and as for kernels go, an increasing number of people prefer the stock kernel over PBJT for various reasons. Try both to see what works best for you.

I use Tweaked, and am very happy with it. I've tried PBJ kernel several times with EXT4, but can't get rid of some lag issues, so I keep going back to the stock kernel.

I like tweaked - plus it gets the most support right now. I think the eclipse developer has a newer phone, so that ROM has probably seen it's last update.
additionally, you've also got great themers here like Blackness, etc...
finally, you don't have to choose a custom ROM when rooting - you can still stick with stock or a debloated/deodexed ROM. but that will lack the bells and whistles of a tweaked or Eclipse.
also keep in mind that there are very easy ways to revert back to stock (just ask blackness - I think he did that 28 times over a 10-hour span last weekend ) so VZW will never know that your phone has been rooted....
I have what is probably a very silly, basic question. If I want to root my phone to using tweaked 2.2, should I be following this guide (except with Tweaked, rather than GB 2.3.4)?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160580
Is there another guide you would recommend?
Also, I'm hoping to read a bit more about all the terminology for rooting phones, all the basics, etc. I've been able to find a couple of general guides (in this forum and using google) and each one teaches me a little bit but I figured I'd ask the masters. If you were just starting to look into this, what guide/articles/pages would you recommend reading?

That's as good of a guide as I've seen. I don't think I've ever had to "tap" the power button to get into download mode, fwiw. Just hold Vol down and plug it in.
There's not a whole lot you can screw up that Odin can't fix. Just make absolutely certain that your computer does not lose power and that your device does not become unplugged during any Odin'ing you do. I'd recommend going over to www.imnuts.org and pulling the EP4D and Charge.pit files in the event that you need to back out. Having them on your computer will save you the headache later on.
As far as guides, most of them are going to be really dated. The Charge community is winding down, and those of us who are left are generally pretty helpful and patient when it comes to questions. We don't have much in the way of guides because there is no large influx of newbies ever coming our way to clog up the forum. If you pay attention to Rootzwiki, there is a new fella who tried to do things on his own and got really frustrated by the lack of info. That lack of info is probably due to the fact that none of us really need it.
That said, if you run into a question, just ask. If nothing else, I'll try to help you out.
I had a babyzilla turn off my computer during the Odin process, and I was able to fully recover. So no real danger there.
Also, www.chargeforums.com has also got some helpful how to threads as well.
tappin' that....

I've read that you can get hosed if it stops in the middle of flashing the modem? I don't know if there's any validity to that.
Not really sure where it was the process, but it happened a few tines. The first two times were due to a certain web page freezing up my PC.
tappin' that....
For the record, I put Tweaked 2.2 w/PBJ on my charge, used tweaktools to add Transparent ICS and it looks and runs great. If anyone was considering whether or not to use it, I'd highly recommend it.
Thanks for your help, everyone!
Batdroid we had it for about oh I don't know maybe 30 mins to an hour....

Kernels?

Can anybody link me to any? I see people in several posts referencing battery life and also temperature issues to be dependent on kernels and which one you chose, but I don't see any to choose lol. A popular one seems to be arde and a Google search doesn't bring anything relevant up. Is there a list of kernels somewhere? I think I'm starting to prefer stock actually. Is there some for stock and cm based?

Well I clearly stated that I Googled it. I wouldn't be posting this if I didn't. The only real relevant link appears to be the first one and it's in Spanish. Using Chrome to translate I still can't seem to make sense of an organize the links, nor do all of them work. Excuse me for thinking someone might have reorganized them somewhere in English.

Group 1 and Group 2 are for STOCK
CM and CM OC are for CM
Aren't most of them included in the ROMs? I've finally got it where I got CM12 not running that hot, at least to the touch anyway. The kernel auditor app still is showing numbers sorta high
I was under the thought that the ARDE kernels dont work with the newer type builds.
One other thing.....they are in .img formats. Isn't that for bootloaders and reocveries? Can you flash a kernel as an img file in twrp?

I used to use it way back in the day with Samsung phones lol. So you can flash a kernel IMG with it? Would that delete TWRP? Or do these kernels have TWRP ingrained or something? Last time last phone I was flashing kernels they were just Zips. That's what I'm used to, I'm just a little confused why they are boot IMG's on this phone.

LOT'S of differences in these Chinese phones vs the flagships. All in all, pretty solid phones, but better left with minimal modifying, as the hardware, software, and development just aren't on par. After trying 2 ROM's, with bad result, I am just going to stick with stock rooted, TWRP, and Xposed. You can already freeze/uninstall the little bloat there is, and because of no hardware method of booting into TWRP, risk vs gain just isn't worth it for me. Anyway, I don't think you will lose TWRP by flashing kernel. I'm not knocking any of the dev's......far from it! I just don't feel the need to spend so much time modifying what is such a small footprint (178 elements for me, vs 380 in touchwiz flagships!) for little, if any gain in battery or performance. Just one nerd's opinion.

Try installing that arde OC kernel i mentioned in the other post. There's not much you even have to mess with with it, it's already set. It has helped out things majorly and I still get stock battery life even.

I flashed the kernel, and when it rebooted, it stayed stuck at Alcatel screen. Wouldn't respond to adb/fastboot commands, finally decided to try to reflash/update using update software, but when I turned it off, as soon as I plugged it into PC, it would boot to Alcatel screen. So then I tried to put it in download mode, and after many tries, got it there, but update tool would fail at5%, saying device not recognized. Finally, some how trying to get into download mode, it booted into TWRP. Yay!.....or so I thought. I wiped and then restored, and when it booted, back to Alcatel screen. Managed to get it back to TWRP after several tries, and it turned out that something unmounted system. Wiped, restored, mounted, wiped cache and dalvic, put it in freezer, as the only time it gets hot is when I wipe caches.....takes about 5 minutes to update/reboot. Now all is good, but I'm going to stick with stock rooted, as even out of the box I never experienced any lag. I have even underclocked with ROM toolbox pro, 1344 for top cores, 960 for bottom, powersave governor. Still no lag! :good: I have Cricket 60450,btw. This really is a different animal than the EVO and Galaxy phones I have been using since 2010. I dont understand how you can have such wildly different variables with similar hardware....I have a ZTE Warp Elite with 2gb RAM, and when i clear junk/caches it gets down to 10-16% memory usage, and tops out at about 65%. The Idol will clear to mid 40% and quickly gets to low 80%. Is the difference that bad between 5.0.2, and 5.1.1? Anyway, if you get stuck like I did, just keep powering off, and rebooting with power, vol up, down, both, and you can get into TWRP. Wish I could say there was a specific order/procedure to get there, but it just seemed to be a case of repetition. Hope this can be of help if anyone gets stuck at splash for whatever reason, and can't get phone to respond with PC. Also, have any cricket users used the upgrade tool, and if so, did that SIM unlock? Don't know if that's a separate firmware/chip that controls SIM lock. So much for my rambling adventures, but hopefully if someone gets stuck they can use my experience to get into recovery.
