Dual core vs quad core - General Questions and Answers

Hello I have a dual core 1.2 ghz phone and I love the customization u can do on an android, most of all the live wallpapers but sometimes when I swype the homescreen, the live wallpaper gets laggy as well as the transition effect, I just want to know if a quad core like the htc one x+ will fix the problem, I have an upgrade available and I could get this phone but I think it would be really expensive, would a quad core fix the laggines of transition effects and live wallpapers runnung on the background? What are the quad core pros?

Does this happen with all live wallpapers? If not then it could just be that that certain one is not well optimized, etc. Getting the new device may not have the issue, but is it worth it? Any device with the CPU power of yours should be able to handle a live wallpaper.
N.B. - The amount of cores is not the solution. Understand that core #'s are not the only things to look at when it comes to CPU's. The architecture is more important.

Ok man thanks but what do u mean with architecture? See I'm on tmobile and I'm a huge fan of htc sense even though is to heavy but I love the look, what do u think, should I change to att for the one x plus , or stay with tmobile and get the one s ?

An A15 dual core processor (e.g. In the Nexus 10) is more powerful than an A9 quad core processor (e.g. In the Nexus 4). This is caused by the architecture. See this versus this . If you have the money and the will to switch carriers, then an upgrade won't hurt. Otherwise, you could stay. Its ur choice .

[INFO] Benchmark results

Hi
I've been testing and comparing some of the top candidates og android phones on the market now.
The competitors are: Samsung Galaxy SII, Lg Optimus 2x (CM7) and HTC Sensation
And I must say, I'm pretty disappointed with HTC Sensation so far. Don't know if I'm just unlucky, or if we should expect an update on this in the future, but the GPU is way behind in comparison to the two others.
www.antutu.com benchmark results:
4578 - Samsung Galaxy SII
4456 - LG Optimus 2x
3758 - HTC Sensation
Goint through the details, the most worrying is HTC Sensation scores low on 2d/3d graphics, about half of what LG Optimus 2x scores, which is the winner, with a total of 297 + 350 in graphics. Sensation scores about 300 in total.
Qaudrant benchmark goes like this:
3678 - Samsung Galaxy SII
3120 - LG optimus 2x
2170 - HTC Sensation
Basically Samsung wins because of scoring higher on both CPU and memory (1gb ram)
LG Optimus 2x got he best GPU and Database IO (data transfer rate)
HTC Sensation is just way behind
What is your results? Is it just me, or could we hope for an update?
I have heard rumors about HTC Sensation only running on half of the kernels ind the GPU, is this true?
I heard it scores so low because of the Sense 3.0 requiring so much to run.
Maybe HTC should start concerning themselves more with function rather than form. I think everyone hear would rather have a faster device with less eye candy. If you look at what Samsung had done since the Behold II they have progressively toned Touch Wiz down with each iteration. I just hope we get the boot loader unlocked quick.

Always have liked the sense. To.each their own.

Sensation has such low benchmarks because it has qHD screen and Sense 3.0. Take Sense 3.0 away and this thing'll fly!
As I said in my own Sense 3.0 thread, having Sense 3.0 and qHD screen beats having high benchmarks. Benchmarks don't mean ANYTHING unless they're running the same UI overlay. Put them on stock/CyanogenMod and the Sensation will be a lot lot faster!

I agree with this. Sense requires a lot of ram and so does the qHD screen. That's the only reason benchmarks are so low. Get some stock GB on here and you'll see the difference. It also explains why the chip is clocked at 1.2GHz. I wonder how much further it can be pushed, though.

I've heard the chip is underclocked to 1.2ghz to save battery...it apparently can go to 1.5ghz, at least.

If you don't like sense then why buy the Sensation? That's like buying car that's a stick and then complaining because it's not an automatic. Yes sense is on the phone, yes sense may cause lower benchmarks, yes it's heavily intergrated. If those things bother you then perhaps purchasing a sensation was a mistake...not trying to start an argument, but really it illogical to complain about something you knew going in was a core part of the phone. I don't like touchwiz...so I don't purchase devices with touchwiz on them...it wouldn't make sense for me to buy a phone with touchwiz knowing I don't like it and then complaining about it.
Some ignorant people just don't get the fact. HTC had been advertised about Sense 3.0 for Sensation and we all do know it is a core part of the phone. So don't get the phone if you are for benchmarks isn't it? this sound silly, doesn't it?
Ah! Of course... the screen res is higher, that should influence on the benchmark for sure. Moto Xoom scores low also, but that too, has a higher res.
Im just concerned if it is still scoring lower when on stock. Does anyone have a true benchmark of the Adreno220, which is within the Sensation?
The benchmarks I found on the internet, the Adreno220/M8660 beats the crap out of LG optimus 2x and SGSII.
Anyone know if there is a truth to the "half cores only support" yet?

When we get s-off, we'll have some true benchmarks for all devices. Optimus 2x, Galaxy S II, Sensation, and possibly Moto Atrix. Put them all on latest release of CyanogenMod7 and benchmark them using a range of apps.

Actually its mainly because HTC chose to use old technology and use 2 second gen snapdragon chips which use the arm 8 instruction set, instead of using a cpu based on the new arm 9 technology which is what every other new dual core cpu is set up with.

As other people have stated, this view is nonsense. Scorpion is a parallel development to A9. It has advantages and disadvantages in comparison.
lol if you want to try and call it nonsense... I'm really just trying to help educate you and explain, but you can continue to think that if you wish
Scorpion incorporates some ARM 9 features, its basically like ARM 8 and a half and that is being optimistic -_-'

Your post is wildly inaccurate... First of all there is no ARM 8 instruction set. All A8, A9, and Scorpion processors use the ARMv7 instruction set. Second, Scorpion is Qualcomm's own architecture, it is not based on the A8 design, they created their own design from scratch. It is not as simple as A9 > A8 for this reason. The Scorpion architecture implements features that are not available on A8 but are available on A9. The main difference between the Scorpion and the A9 is the number of pipeline stages. The Scorpion has 13 while the A9 has 8. This is positive and negative for both, as more pipeline stages improves throughput, but is more costly if an instruction has to be aborted and the pipeline flushed.
I have gotten a lot of responses telling me that the Scorpion is based off A8 and tweaked. This is not correct. If it were simply tweaked, it would not be able to have a clock over 1 GHz without overclocking, as that is the limitation of the A8 architecture. It also could not support dual cores, again a limitation of A8. The Scorpion also has partial support of out-of-order processing. This is impossible on an A8 processor, but is fully supported on an A9.
You are correct in saying that every other dual core is based off an A9 processor because the A9 is the only design you can license from ARM that can support dual cores. The only alternative is for a company to license the instruction set itself and design their own architecture (Qualcomm's approach). I should also point out that the A9 processors are synchronous, while the MSM8260 is asynchronous, allowing separate clock speeds and voltages to each core, which can greatly increase battery performance (especially on processes that only utilize 1 core).
I will agree that A9 is more advanced than Scorpion, but it is not by nearly as much as the "Scorpion is A8" argument would indicate. The MSM8260 can also support clock speed up to 1.5 GHz, so the Sensation can be overclocked without actually overclocking the processor.

Exactly! I don't understand the logic of people that purchase a device that they know has certain features and then complain about it. That's like buying a phone with a slide out keyboard and then complaining saying you don't like the fact that it has a slide out keyboard. My thing is, Sense is not a surprise. Everyone knew going in that it was there, and they know what it is and how it works. If certain people don't like that, then they probably shouldn't have bought the phone. Doesn't make sense to complain about getting exactly what you were paying for.

Dual core or quad core

Im thinking of a new phone but im perplexed. Should i get a dual core now like the Note or the Nexus or should i try and wait for a quad core? I dont usually game pn my phone, i have a Galaxy Tab for that.

If any of the rumors are true about it, it wont be out of date by my next upgrade.

The only "announced" quad cores are the huwai whatever its called(sorry dont remember the name of the phone). And the htc one x. Unfortunatly the htc will not have a quad core in america yet because the tegra3 is not lte compatable so i think we all gonna have to settle for dual core this year. I could be wrong but it seems like we wont get a quad for a while yet.

Luckily I just upgraded to the Samsung Glide in November but I know what you mean. Why go Dual core if you can get Quad core and be set for a good amount of time. The only thing I worry about quad core is will it eat up battery power?
My dual core is plenty and it doesn't even have dual core optimization ics OS yet... I can't think of any reason to need a quad core. It's like using a server to power notepad

What about Four+1?
What about 4-PLUS-1 technology? Any idea whether such systems actually make things run more efficiently using only 1 core (the "ninja" core) for low-end tasks? No idea about this, just floating it to see what news there is out there about this technology.
First of all based on ur bugdet
Second quad core rocks but if u don't need intensive processing with ur smartphone I would say go for the galaxy note its amazing

Dual core most people will tell you quadcore is faster than dual core this is false. Just because you have two more of something doesn't mean anything if you can not use it properly. This is why tegra 3 as you see gets beat by Qualcomm krait (dual core) and Ti omap 5 (dual core). Its not about how many cores its about efficiency. Nvidia pretty much doesn't know what they are doing still in the phone market.
Quad core on a phone is not required imo.
I would stick with a dual core (My Galaxy SII has never given me any trouble) - quad core is pricy and no real need for it at present. But you can always do a future investment since you will eventually want a quad core.
I am personally waiting till my quad core phones drop in price and are required.
The note does look sweet but my luck sprint wont get it and htc said the one x will be the fagship phone for this year

when android can fully utilize two cores, then we'll talk. Until then this is pointless. Quad core = less battery
Why no three cores?
I would like an upgrade as well lol, even if it means 1GHz Single core as I am currently surviving on 528MHz OC'ed to 692MHz (ofc single core) lol
It can handle everyday tasks all right but when you mention 3D games it dies (no gpu)

The thing is, the HTC One X in the UK can be brought for £28.50 a month - I would have to pay more than that for the Galaxy Nexus. Quad core phones are no more expensive to buy than dual core - phone manufacturers realise that at present, they simply don't have a market for constant £41 on free prices.
For the people who say quad core means less battery are wrong. Nvidia is still using
A9 architecture and 40 mn. Ti omap5, exynos (5, something), Krait, all beat tegra 3 quad core technology. Ti omap 5 and krait are using 28mn and exynos supposedly using 32mn. All of these processors are a15 which pretty much destroys nvidia a9 architecture. They also use less power voltage and completing the same task. Compared to tegra 3.
Quad core is pointless if you don't have the battery to back it up. The Razr Maxx has a 3,300mAh battery. That should have been available a long time ago. Companies keep designing phones with bigger screens, more powerful processors, and energy-draining 4G LTE. This is all fun and well, but the battery is the most important part and need to be worked on more.
In some cases dual core processors can actually be faster than processors with quad core.

MTK6577 phones?

Hi All,
Been seeing a lot of china phones running the MTK6577 + SGX531 and was wondering if anyone had any real performance figures on any of these devices, particularly those with screen resolutions greater than 800x480.
There are a lot of knock-off phones running this however there are some china-branded phones sporting them as well.
Ive seen some threads surrounding haipai devices that are running this SoC, however they only seem to have 512MB RAM and WVGA screens (albeit the screens are quite large physically).
I was wondering if there were any phones running MTK6577 with 1GB RAM and a 960x540 or better yet a 1280x720 screen?
I understand that they are cheap and would like to know if they represent 'bang-for-buck' at all?
Well depends who makes it ...xiaomi is great got the mi-1 going to get the two ... look at fastcardtech.com for xiaomi mi-2

Games play great. Battery life is awesome. Camera is awesome. ICS 4.0.9, For me and this is my first second Chinese phone, And so far i love it. recommend to anyone.

we need an a chinese phone section.
Just got my Amoi n820, trying to figure out how to root it.
Anyway Antutu score is about 5400+ ? its actually a pretty decent performer
It appears that there is an S3 knock-off that has a 1GB RAM and a 1280x720 screen which is pretty decent.
I have also found a "Hero H9500+" which is essentially a Zopo ZP900 but with only 512MB RAM and a 5.0MP camera (8.0MP would be better but ahh well).
Still for less than $200 it has a 5.3" QHD 960x540 screen. Havent been able to find any video demonstrations of it however.
It would be awesome to have a 5"+ phone with 1GB RAM and a 1280x720 screen. I think we will see them soonish.
I understand that MediaTek are bringing out a quad-core (i think its MTK6585?) later this year which should see quad-core china phones boom. The GPU is supposed to be the SGX544 which is used in TI OMAP 4 amongst other things.

Be very careful. Many shops advertise 1,2 Ghz but they do send you a 1.0 Ghz phone. Afaik there is no 1.2 Ghz variant around.
I own one of the "1.2ghz" MTK 6577 and the fact that they have a sticker with "quadcore CPU" on it should tell you something about how the chinese advertise their products.
That being said i knew that i am buying a 1.0 GHZ dualcore phone and i am very happy with it. It's really fast and powerful enough to do some gaming if one likes to.

can I have some advice?

Guys ive been reading on net bout android phone ive been wanting to buy sgs3 but when I saw some forum saying quadcore is useless on sgs3 that its better having dual core and now I saw Xperia tx verion that won benchmark test that saying has better performance that sgs3 so guys what is the phone?

I'm pretty sure only the international sgs3 has a quad core... but I may be wrong on that.
As far as cpu performance goes, I prefer the tegra processors over the snapdragons. LG optimus hd has one of these in a quad core version available oversees.
This isnt about opinions though, trust the benchmark results.

Well it really depends on what you feel. Benchmarks are pointless. only real world use matters. I would give up the quad core for the 2gb of ram the US Moslem comes with but for gaming the spores line is your best bet as those are gaming devices

Eh same could've been said about dual core when it first popped up for us. Its more about taking advantage of the cores that's the situation. Later versions of android are surely to take full capacity of the cores as more and more phones adopt. As for the phone, the gs3 is perfect for gaming, media, browsing ect. Although its plastic, the way its shipped makes it comfortable to hold in the hand

The best overall performance for a phone has to be the Galaxy S3. It comes with a Snapdragon S4, which is an entirely NEW architecture. That means snapdragon is half a generation ahead of the tegra 3 and exynos 4 in terms of cpu design. The only drawback of the S4 is its gpu, as it only has an adreno 225, which is a slight upgrade from it's old gpu. Otherwise the Galaxy S3 is still a powerhouse.
As for gaming, the Tegra 3 has a slight edge due to NVIDIA forming partnerships with game developers and they optimize some games to run well on the tegra 3.

Overall, real-performance is the almost the same for both phones, One X and GSIII, but with a slight edge to the GSIII for its superior S4.
i think sgs3 dual core version with 2gb ram wont be released in europe i only saw in italy is quadcore with 1gb ram T_T but ithink 1g ram is still good coz my father has sgs2 ^^
so if we will base on experience sgs3 is still the best ill gonna save a bit more for that phone XD
Anything Krait is good, the S4 is a very capable chip. The quad pro version will be a beast.
Exynos is fast as well, Nvidia is better for gaming. But it also depends on how well the manufacturers optimise their software to run on the hardware.

Xperia TX. Go for it. No TouchWiz, better camera and design. Jelly Bean almost after launch.
it is very important to know if it is quad or dual cored. If it is quad then it will run faster because there is less stress on the cpu, then if it was dual. but, honestly, i ahve been using my droid incredible for a very long time. This is a 1 GHZ single core cpu and i use it heavily. i play n64 games on it without over clocking (the max cpu is like 1134 mhz, but i set it to about 600mhz and i can play with absolutely no lag.) so, what i am saying is that it doesn't matter if it is dual or quad cored because it is fast enough already. but, i know the international version, or at least the one i saw in india when i went there for vacation is quad. i think the USA version is quad as well. and btw, i have played with it. it's a great phone. the display is beautiful. the battery life is amazing. flash a kernel on it and i think you can run for 2-3 days with light/medium use in a single charge. go get that phone!
International galaxy s3 is quad core with 1gb a ram and is 1.4ghz which can be over clocked to 1.7ghz. I have an international galaxy s3 as I am from UK.

quad core might not be fully usable at the moment but it will get better.
the main thing is the i9300 (international version) will have far more vast support then any carrier specific models us versions.
Benchamrk results are not that important
Get the S3 because its good for gaming with bigger screen and nice comfy shape :good:

I am also looking at getting a new phone. I am leaning towards a quadcore because I tend to have phones for a while. (Still rocking my captivate...) I figure that even though applications are not optimized for the quadcore yet, they will be in the future, which means I can make use of the phone for longer without feeling the need that I "have" to upgrade.

Adreno 225 at 720p and mali400?

Hey guys was hoping you could help me out since I am a big newbie when it comes to the mobile world
I am looking to buy a new phone, and one of the phones I've choosen to buy has adreno 225, 1.5ghz krait and 720p 4.7" screen (its the pantech (or SKY) a830l ).
Was hoping you guys could help me and let me know which games and/or apps (if any) I wont be able to run because of gpu bottle-neck on this resolution, and how future proof the adreno 225 will prove to be..
additionally, my alternative choice is htc One X
One X is almost twice the price of the pantechm , so I want to know whether its really worth it in terms of cpu and gpu power (ignoring the better screen for a bit).
Also, I've noticed that many 'very' powerful cell phones have mali400 (including galaxy note (1) and SIII). I've heard people say that adreno 225 is better than mali400 AND that SIII outperforms in games cell phones with much more powerful graphics card. So now im really confused. Am I missing something?

mali 400 easily outperforms adreno 225... that's why it is in galaxy s3
and it has capability upto 4 cores so it is better
more comparable to it would be adreno 320!
the "pantech" one is a good choice if pricing suits you! You'll be able to play many games but i assume 1.5 ghz krait is either dual/quad core!! If yes you are good to go!

thanks for the reply, really appreciate the clarification.
Ive seen a couple of benchmarks but benchmarks are just benchmarks. Based on current games an apps, how many games and apps are there that wont be able to run because of the gpu? and can you give me some examples? hope I'm not asking too much
the pantech 830 is Super IPS LCD 720p (4.8"), krait dual core 1.5ghz and adreno 225
Samsung galaxy Note (N7000) is Super Amoled 720p (5.3"), cortex A-9, mali400, about 25% more expensive than the pantech
HTC One X is about twice the price of the pantech (and I really doubt I need the quad core)

Well the pantech phone will run almost all games.. Games which have state of the art graphics like nova3,wild blood and latest nfs, asphalt releases might be a problem.. But those can also be made working by rooting and enabling hardware acceleration
Note and one x will run all games but i understand they are costly
Then again it comes to u, how much u want to pay!

thanks for the reply..Im willing to spend more but I just dont want spend money on hardware which I wont be utilizing. Id like to game on my mobile, but not dying do and dont mind if a few games dont work. Prefer gaming on my PC in any case.
Just want to confirm that all apps would work and I could run 720p videos on the pantech smoothly.
