Hello everyone, just got my skyrocket gs2 (from ios4s) and longstory short,
i was told (by att rep) this phone did ICS....
so now i know it doest for now.......so i decided to root(ok so far) and
all that jazz......
im up to the point where i drop in the rom on extcard to install.
The problem im having is that the ROM im trying to run is
ICS_SMOOTHIE
and its not working properly. When i install (about 5 tries already) all goes good till reboot. I reboot, phone "sammy text" appears 3-6 xs, then eventually i get the ICS intro with all the colors and 1sec after it appears, it freezes and theres like a "Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" sound like a turbine engine like if phone was gonna blow up.
My ? is, whats going wrong? i followed the guide to the letter and did every step(as far as clearin cache etc) multiple times.
if this rom is bad (i also downloaded twice) then are there more ICS roms
out there that r good?
Thanks in advanced.

Hmmm you did install the ICS leak first, correct?... if anything don't do darkside wipe and only clear cache and dalvik cache. Flash zip from sdcard and do factory reset then reboot.

OK I see your problem. Looks like the rooting guide you followed is for GB (GB is gingerbread OS) which is before ICS. And let me get you the right guide... u need to flash this first http://rootzwiki.com/topic/23105-i727ucld2/ and that is becuz the rom itself doesn't have what is called the "radio" or "modem" for it to work properly so u need to flash the ics leak that came out first and then you have to flash CWM TOUCH recovery with Odin and root... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24085665 rooting guide for ics: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24050465

Firstly, man, the devs will kill you if you say they are just skins and not full ROMS..LOL...!
The step above in your post: You should not skip that step if you are coming from Gingerbread.
You flash the leaked ICS modem first thing.
Then you wipe data etc.......although the modem is onboard the ROM.
see mhx's Full Bloat ICS here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1570498 FOLLOW THE STEPS AND LINKS FOR MODEM, KERNEL AND ROM in that post.
I have this running on my phone full time. I think that is that absolute safest for any newbie. Once you have ICS STOCK running, then you know you are good.
LMAO at all of you.
Thanks for all you guys help. i gave up and returned the phone lol, got a iphone 4s.......................( booooooooooooooooo ) lol
BUT, my quick question here (before i get stoned ) is lol, can i use these ICS "roms" on my galaxy tab? (im still a supporter) lol...
overall, i have samsung galaxy tab 8.9 and 7.1 and im wondering if i can use the tools you guys have provided on those 2 devices or if i have to go look for specific mods/upgrades for those devices seperately?
lol, thanks in advanced
Just sharing my experience in upgrading to Jelly Bean on the Captivate.
Before you begin:
Before you begin, back up your efs partition.
Some ICS and JB ROMS have issues where they will forget your IMEI. If this is the case you'll need to restore your efs partition. If you don't already have a back up, you'll have to reflash to stock (pain in the butt) so that you can back up your efs so that you can restore it on your shiny new ROM. Without an IMEI, you won't be able to make calls or access wireless networks.
How to Backup/restore EFS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859914
General Process
ICS and Jelly Bean are too big to put the entire rom in /system, so the current practice is to break up the ROM into 2 or more zip files (the ROM itself and a second zip that has essential apps like the Market). Both have to be flashed.
The ROMs have upgraded CWM (Recovery Modules) so you have to flash the ROM twice. The first time installs the CWM, the second time installs the ROM.
My journey
I had been using Mosaic, which is now defunct. When I started seeing posts from Studacris (former Mosaic developer) from several months ago saying "Gingerbread? What is this the stone age?" I decided perhaps is was time to upgrade to ICS.
Of course when I started looking at ICS ROMS, it turns out that now there are Jelly Bean ROMS available as well. Some people say the JB ROMS solve several problems with ICS. Others say the ICS are more stable for now.
Moral of the story. Your Captivate is unique. You won't know which is which until you try them, but my journey may help you.
1. I want to try Slim Bean, but coming from Gingerbread, it's recommended to start on Cynanogen (CM)
2. So I might as well try CM, but do I try CM9 (ICS) or CM10 (JB)?
3. Ah what the heck, let's go CM10!!!
4. Okay, there's at least four versions. The official, three unofficials of varying "v" releases, the Devil version with datadata (what the heck is datadata?), some guy's custom rolled ROM which he says is likely to brick your phone.
5. Okay, I'll try the latest V8 version with the Devil kernel (note, you should use the version with datadata).
6. Flash goes fine, but now it hangs on black screen with the word Android. After 30 minutes, I figured it really was hanged. Reflashing and rewiping solved that problem.
7. I had a lot of issues with it (see below), so I decided to try Slim ICS.
8. I had other issues with SlimICS (see below), so what the heck, let's try Slim Bean.
9. Slim Bean seems like a keeper to me: Fast; great feautures; decent launcher (vastly better than SlimICS). Only real problem I'm finding is that the Market won't let me install (or even see) Astro Player, which is one of my absolute must have apps. Still trying the dev's workaround.
CM 10 Issues:
Outdated:
1. The home key and back key are reversed.
2. My IMEI was wrong, and restoring EFS didn't help
3. I experienced intermittent lag on the launcher
Update CM10
Everything works fine in CM10 Helly Bean (29.07.2012). Faster than Slim.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1783064.
Slim ICS Issues
The first thing the Slim ICS installer does is install its own CWM and in the process it will erase your sdcard (internal memory)
SO....
1. Back up your internal SDCARD before you start
2. To save time, put the zip files on your external card also (the newer CWM will let you install from the external card)
3. I hate the launcher
4. I still couldn't make phone calls.
Slim Bean issues
Works great except for the market issue. Seems to be a problem with the DPI. Still waiting to see if it resolves. Alternatively, I could try to restore my Mosaic version of Astro Player with Titanium back up.
Update:
1. Market issue resolved after about 36 hours of following the fix on the website.
2. Internal card and sdcard were reversed, (/sdcard and /emmc)
Conclusion
I hope my journey helps someone out there.

I initially had that issue of not being able to make any calls. I didn't even have ANY service. Then I went to check which baseband/modem I had and sure enough I found the rom didn't flash a modem. I had to go find one and flash it. After that it worked perfectly.
I also didn't like the new Lightning Launcher so I went back to the old launcher they used - Zeam Launcher.

It does, but it depends on who ports or where did you get your CM10 rom. That problem you stated occurs when you flash a i9000 devil kernel for what I know. Jelly bean in cappy needs the devil version that has datadata on its filename either VC or CMC. Visit the Hell Bean Thread.

I don't personally recommend that page because it was not actually tested yet by porters it means that the file in that site was raw JB. Recently derteufel uploaded a version that is "busted". So I would suggest to pay a visit to the HellBean thread and test a version that has already ported.
I just installed the stable CM9 and I don't really like what I am seeing. The lag on the home screen is unbearable and sometimes the notification bar splits into two when I am pulling it down. I will definitely try a CM10 rom and see how well it functions but I want to use the most stable version, or better yet the one with the least issues that I can use as my day to day rom. I really don't want to go through the trouble of installing every single JB rom.

helly bean all the way. the only problem i have with it is when flashing a new rom (whether its the same to re-flash or upgrading to latest) you lose google now.

Definitely Helly Bean. Make sure to do a solid master clear and format of your phone first, then flash the latest helly bean. Long time user of slimics then slimbean and just switched over.
Only jellybean rom I've found that works FAST right out of the box, and even better when changing a few settings with devil kernel config. Only rom in which devil config settings actually stick after reboot as well!

So far the latest cm9 nightly is the only ics that has worked well for me. All the jb roms I tried have me a lot of issues (sd card switch, no modem-couldn't even flash a modem, etc) so I haven't built up the confidence to try again.
My problems aren't with ROM behavior, but rather the newer versions of system apps. The phone app on gb had a feature at the end of a phone call to redial or text the person you just called. Miss that. Also the clock app doesn't have the world clock. Not a fan of that one. Over all everything is smooth but a lot of features I had with apex 12 are greatly missed.

Hi,
I need some help. I am an XDA lurker and have learned a ton. I am mostly aware of the usual fixes for these things, but I can not return to any other ROM than a CM10. CM10 data and camera are not working great, even though I LOVE this ROM and LOVE these developers, I can't use it yet.
Firtst, my backups are gone, I know, I know. But they are gone. I tried flashing NoSympothy and invisibleK,s stock ROMs but I get frozen at the Galaxy SIII screen everytime.I have tried all the usual system wiping drills, cache, data, etc... Formatted everything. I have downloaded from multiple sources. It seems like it doesn't like ICS now?
I am rooted and UNLOCKED! Woohoo, thanks Adam!!!!!
Any suggestions?
Recoverys to CM10 work. New flashes to CM10 work. But no stock image or stock rom?

You have to flash the stock kernel as well as the ROM. Try flashing the Synergy latest nightly build it includes a custom kernel as long as your bootloader is unlocked.
Thanks,
I had a feeling it was something with the kernel. I wasn't sure what was included though. I think I tried to get synergy from here on my phone and it just kept opening new windows instead of downloading. I will grab the just the kernel from somewhere and let you know. I'll update in an hour or so. Thanks for the next few steps to try. Much appreciated!
That was it THANKS!!!

Stock ROMs include the stock kernel. They will work as a one flash wonder. Your issue more sounds recovery based. Which recovery from which app were you using? It more sounds lime maybe you're still on a kexec recovery which is why you couldn't flash stock but synergy latest worked (or something of the sort, maybe other way around)

I keep running into problems after flashing any ICS custom ROM. (Maybe I should try going to an ICS Stock ROM first).
Most times it just loops on the loading screen.
- Phone is rooted of course.
- I usually have the Emancipation GB custom rom before flashing to this one or a Stock GB with root and red CWM.
- I follow instructions to a 'tee'
- When I do reboot, it loops at Samsung logo.
The last time I tried (Dark Knight ICS Rom), just recently, I flashed then rebooted into recovery (from advance-boot to recovery), and it didn't go to recovery mode, it just looped.
So currently I'm on Stock GB with root and red CWM.
What am I doing wrong?
What are some things I should consider?
Some of the GB custom roms are nice yes, but I rooted mainly so I could get ICS.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer/

To be honest I was running from using Entropy's build.
Fear of it being too technical (It's actually the first thread I saw when I was thinking of going to ICS). So I used it and my phone is up and running now on ICS.
Won't be able to play around with it as much until I get home from work but thanks for mentioning it again.
Now to go and read the thread all the way through (kidding) well see if the problems he had are still occurring.
Thanks again guys.
For me, using Entropy's build made it easy to go to any other ICS rom for the Infuse- it is great as is or as a "stepping-stone" to other ICS builds. Glad it worked for you.
Yea man it was nice. I don't even need the other custom roms, this has everything I wanted.
And since it has a theme chooser, I'm good for life on the look of it.
I might try and customize my own stuff in the future but for now, all is right with my Infuse. I was going to get the Note but I got a brand new phone right here.
Hello, all.
I have a T-Mobile Blaze 4G with rooted stock ROM (Gingerbread), flashed radio version T989UVMC6, manually debloated and dewizzed. I'm running Halo launcher and Busybox Free version 9.6.
Since almost the first day I've had this phone, it would occasionally force close the phone process, usually when hanging up the phone with the Bluetooth radio on and paired with an earpiece. It happened bone stock, rooted, after I changed the modem, whenever. It seemed to happen less often after I changed the modem. The process always starts back up, but the Bluetooth device connection and system sound controls are wonky (unusable) until the phone is rebooted.
The only thing that seems to stop it is running Zepplinrox's V6 Supercharger script. That, however, occasionally freezes the entire system when trying to open certain apps, requiring a reboot. I've run earch after search on this subject, and nobody else seems to have this problem. The only thing I haven't tried is wiping the whole thing and flashing a custom ICS or JB ROM. I tried Dark Knight ver. 8 and hated it pretty much instantly.
I have two questions. Number one; Will flashing a custom ROM fix this situation? I figure that this must be a problem with the crappy stock Samsung ROM. Number two; Which ROM is fully functional and stable? I'd really like to keep this phone dependable. I don't care about the latest and greatest funky cool features that are hit-or-miss at best. I just need dependable, fast and functional.
Since you have been having issues for a while, I would suggest starting fresh. With a few runs of black hole wipe from cwm. Add a run of the gremlin remover for extra cleanliness. Then a flash of the latest ICS rooted stock rom and kernel, for reliability.

I'll definitely go for the rooted version! Does it matter what order in which the ROM and the kernel are flashed? Also, I take it from the name of the download link that I'll have to go through the process of de-bloating this thing again. S'okay, I actually enjoy that part, but I don't want to screw it up since I've not messed with anything newer than GB. Is there a good guide somewhere on the forum for apps that can be dumped safely? I know there was one for GB stock root.
Thanks for the response.

A few more silly questions; Do I need GAPPS or is that just for CM? Aren't the CM 10 ICS nightlies fairly stable and relatively bug-free? I use CM7 on my Nook color and it's...okay... Just a few little annoying things pop up with that. To be honest, I like the idea of starting with a clean slate and adding stuff I like rather than pulling stuff out of the Samsung stock ROM, but the issues I've had with the Nook and CM7 have sort of scared me off. Your opinions?

All the AOSP ROMs for the Blaze needs GAPPs. And yes. The latest CM10 nightly is stable. And you said CM10 ICS? CM9 is ICS and CM10 is Jellybean.

The stock roms don't require gapps, but like Wolf said the cm10 jb variants do.
If your willing to use cm10 it is very stable. Just use the latest CM10 nightly and not the old stable version.

Of course. I get a bit confused ever since people started talking about 10.1.
Okay, I went ahead and installed the stock rooted ROM with the stock kernel. Went through the debloating process (mostly, there are some apps that I'm not sure I can do without so they stay for now), and did some customizing. I'm seeing a bit more battery drain. Is this an issue with ICS or do I need to try another kernel or supercharge the phone? I also have this crazy issue with ROM Manager ver. 5.5.3.0. It tells me that there is an updated version of Clockworkmod Recovery, but it freezes when I try to flash from ROM Manager. Also, ROM Manager freezes when I try to reboot into Clockworkmod Recovery. Maybe I need to test a bit more before I mess with it any more.
**EDIT** Well, it looks as if my CWM recovery installation is corrupted. Can I reflash it without messing up my current ROM?

Yes, with Odin, in the Dev forum
BTW, stay away from ROM Manager with our device. I've softbricked so many times because of it, it's ridiculous

Used this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2011585, it worked well. Still have the battery drain issue, though. : /

Since you have it setup, except for battery life. I would make a backup, then try a mod one at a time and see if any help. Also check the battery stats to see if anything of is seen. ICS will use more juice than GB, generally.
I would suggest Nos/direct injection, supercharger, or cross breeder. I would use one and see, then restore and try another.

Some time later...
I've been using the stock rooted ICS ROM since my last post, debloated and dewizzed of course, with Holo Launcher and T989UVMC6 baseband version flashed. Just over a month has passed, and I have good news!
I FREAKING LOVE THIS PHONE!!!
All of the force close and freezing issues have vanished, the phone's battery lasts almost as long as it did on GB, it's WAY more user friendly, and the phone is as fast as it ever was.
The bad news is that my wife got a GS4 and I lust after it now. : /
Thanks to everyone for their help!
