[Q] Can I delete windows programs from windows 7? - General Questions and Answers

I realize this is an android forum but I have found so much help on these boards for my mobile needs I thought I'd ask my pc question too. Hopefully someone can help me or direct me where to go. I have a sony vaio running windows 7. I am trying to delete alot of windows programs that I never use. Things like windows silverlight, windows live essentials, windows messenger, etc. Whenever I try to delete it I get a message telling me it's a system file & cant be deleted. The reason I am asking her is because I have been able to root my android devices & delete programs I dont want so I was hoping there was a way to do the same thing for my laptop. Any help is greatly appreciated.

There's no such thing as rooting on a Windows PC. You already have full access to all root folders like "Windows" and lower.
I'm glad you've found XDA so useful for your mobile needs, but unfortunately I have to close this as it's outside our scope of discussion. You're more than welcome to try asking in the computer support thread in Off-topic. Good luck.

Help Needed

once files have been down loaded how do you transfer them to the touch HD i need a dummies guide. i have winrar to unzip files but really am unsure how to send programs to my HD thanks for any help
either use Active Sync or take the memory card from your phone and use a reader attached to the PC.
thanks
hey thank you for your input, but how do i get the files to be sync-able.i am v new to this and am trying not to be to dumb
Install ActiveSync, if you are running XP, or Windows Mobile Device Centre (WMDC) if Vista and then just connect you PPC to your PC with a USB cable.
Not being rude but this is basic WM device 101.
re help
mmmm ok you say your not being rude and thats fine, however connecting a usb cable to a port is easy i am not that dumb, what i am is asking is once your connected to wmdc what the next process is. eg:- getting down loaded files from desk top to wmdc then to hd THANK YOU!
i am not being ungrateful for your input,
Dont be afraid of it, surely its best to try for yourself and learn yes?
However, when your phone is synced, click on "explore" on active sync, this opens a folder. Browse to my device then storage card. Simply copy and paste from the folder your file is stored to the storage card folder (this proceedure will be slightly different if using WMDC & Vista).
But im sure you'd have figured that out already yes?
I would suggest having a play around, you really cant do that much damage unless you start deleting things willy nilly and even if you do, theres a hard reset yh?
And dee wasnt been rude (and im sure i dont need to stick up for her!! lol) but you would have found the answer using google
Have fun.
yippeee
hey fantastic that was just the info i was requiring thanks so much to you both and why use google when there is a great forum like this
my friend, i would suggest you use google before asking on here. Whilst some of us are patient, some are not and sometimes you may not get a reply at all. Just a word of advice
Cheers.

i agree with timmy, searching is, unfortunately, a necessity for this forum as sometimes requests such as the Ops will just result in a raft of "search first" responses, some less subtle than others. We have all asked our fair share of stupid questions.
That said there is an art sometimes in actually finding the correct phrase to search for.
Hope your first foray in here hasn't put you off.
No worries
Hey peeps the world would be a better place if we all said it how it is, so i have not been put off at all just hope 1 day i can help out

Persevere, spend far too much time on these boards and one day you will.
All that remains is to wish you happy reading and despite the advice to search don't be afraid to ask.
From my own expeirence i spend too much time in a fixed set of forums, General, Q&A, Dev and Hack and the device specific ones, in my case Trinity.
lol nicely said, my wife would agree that that i spend far too much time on here myself and that i should go "outside" every now and then, what ever that is haha

Total Newbie Question: Cannot Copy Files to HTC Love

Hello All,
I recently bought my first smartphone here in Beijing. It's a dopod D805; I hope to upload media to it from my Vista-loaded PC.
The problem is Vista doesn't seem to recognize the device. I downloaded Windows Mobile Center (sorry if I've got the name wrong) but it doesn't seem to do anything. The CD that came with the device doesn't work (it keeps telling me to install Flash 8.0, which seems to imply the software on the disc was designed for pre-Vista systems).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Update:
The phone seems simply not to work on Vista. I am now dual-booting XP alongside Vista, and have had much more success using XP and Activesync.
A new newbie question:
I cannot copy files (music, PDFs) from my PC's HDD to the phone's drive. Each time I try I am told there is not enough free space on the drive. This is absurd, as there is nothing on the drive other than what came on it, and the files I'm trying to copy are quite small. What gives?

Welcome to the forum
Have a look in the Wiki here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Love
Hope it helps,
Thanks for the response.
I checked that page before posting, but it doesn't seem to have much beyond the specs for my model.
All I want to do is install Pleco, and upload some MP3s/PDFs. When I plug the device in, I get the "bing bong" sound, but no new HD appears in My Computer. Since I'm running Vista, I can't use the bundled Activesync software.
Help?
i dont know if this will help but i cant sync my phone with xp unless i set my firewall to allow all.
if you go to my computer and look at your drives, does it not show you phone there as F: or whatever?
Right, it doesn't show a new drive. Note that I'm running Vista, not XP. I'm in the process of getting a dual-boot setup going, but I'm not there yet. Very frustrating.

googd suggestion.
Hi and thanks for tip. i have already seen this, but its browsing the wrong way.. I want to browse the COMPUTER, not my phone
The next best thing I can think of is if you purchase an application from the Resco Software company. Resco Explorer will allow you to map your network drive on your device. It includes a host of other features that the stock explorer doesn't which will make file management much easier. I highly recommend it to everyone.

i got the soultion..
the good old Total commander finally worked, and now i can browse my server.. nice. thanks for all help guys.

[Q] Question about accessing WP7 partition.

Ok I am new to cell phones, my background is in game consoles. If someone could give me a quick non-flaming answer that would be appreciated.
I followed the guide to get my phone dual-booting Android/WP7. Now I want to try running Ubuntu. Now my problem is that everywhere I look you need to run Haret.exe, so how to I add that to my windows phone Zune partition, or whatever it is you call it?
Everywhere I go it says to add the Linux folder to the root of the Sdcard, but that does nothing, and the file explorer in Windows 7 phone shows My Documents etc... I would assume this is a hidden partition from the mass storage partiton that is Fat32, which shows up fine in Android, and is also where my android os is stored.
My question is simply how do I get my Ubuntu distro in the correct place so that I can run this haret.exe linux loader. I am not a n00b in terms of computers/technology, I just started playing with this phone yesterday and spent all night getting as aquainted with things as I can but this has baffled me, I even did the registry hack that allows you too see the phone as a mass storage device, but it appeared to be the same as the Android partition.
I feel like I have just missed something in the process, even if someone wants to just point me to an appropriate thread that will answer my question I would appreciate it.
Another question, and perhaps I should have led with this, Is the dual-booting of Android/WP7 what is causing my issue or is it something else?
To simplify my question, How do I access the part of my sdcard with My Documents, Application Data, Program Files Etc.... from my computer to add these the files which need to be run through the explorer.
I am running the WP7 rom it seems to have less setting options thatn 6.5 did.
Edit : I solved this through doing some more reading, No more stupid questions from me.

[Q] Integrate WM Device Center

Hi everyone, Is it possible to integrate the WM Device Center directly in the OS? I don't wanna have to open this app every time I connect my phone to the pc..I'm lazy, I know

Seems like you are lazy more than you've expected. You don't even read forum title - it's WP7, not WM forum
I'm not even sure what app or what OS you're referring to - do you mean ToucnXpereince on WP7? That's *supposed* to open automatically when you start WPDM on the PC.
Windows Mobile Device Center is a "big" Windows (desktop/laptop) app, not a phone app... are you saying you want it to launch on the PC when you connect your phone?
Sorry guys, I haven't been clear enough I meant the Windows Mobile Device Center LAUNCHER look at this tread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1521763
It's an app that has to be launched on a fully unlocked phone every time you connect it to the computer. In this way your device can be explored as a sort of plug&play usb mass storage. You can directly copy on it doc files, or anything else you want. Even xap files on my HD7 with deepshining, if I install a File Browser too, I'm able to install XAPs directly from my phone without any other software installed on my pc or on my phone. I think it's a great thing, even for doc files because before of this program the only method to transfer them from PC to the phone ad vice versa was to send'em to myself via mail, or use skydrive. Not much convenient for me. This new method simplyfied my life
So my question was: can this XAP be directly integrated in Windows Phone 7 so when I connect my device to the computer I don't have to open every time this app on my phone?
Now *that* is actually an interesting question. It's certainly possible to have a PC app start a phone app; that's how WPDM launches TouchXperience or Visual Studio launches a debug app. To launch fully automaticlaly, though... that would probably require that the app either have some background service (possible on a fully-unlocked ROM) that monitors for a PC connection, or that the app be registered in some way as "do this when you connect" although I'm not sure how I'd go about the latter.
Yeah, now it's much clear and as GoodDayToDie said is much more interesting I'm already thought about implementation (but I need to run WPConnect.exe automatically, not a Windows Mobile Device Center LAUNCHER). I'll try to find time for the development of this app (this one - finding time - is really hard ), so stay tuned!
Here we are: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24820620
Hey, gigsaw, did you tried WP7 auto launcher? I don't have full unlock so I can't test with WMDC Launcher.
So sorry if it seems that I disappeared but someone stole my HD7 some days ago D: D: D: D: I'm so sad........I was very interested in windows phone 7, I thought it could be the best mobile OS with a bit of developing..but now I can't do anything more. So sorry guys ='(
