[Q] different bootloaders question - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'm currently on the ics bootloader, running a recent(ish) CM10 nightly. I'd really like to try a couple of the other roms like hydro for instance, and i actually really miss the asus notification menu.
From what i can see xplodwild seems to have done great work getting CM10 working on the JB bootloader, so my question is, is there still any benefit to staying on the ICS bootloader? Or can i move up and try a few of the other roms like hydro and cleanrom and not lose out on cm and blackbean etc.
I'm just worried about changing up and regretting it because i didn't realise something.
Thanks in advance, and i did search around but couldnt really find a clear cut answer to this question.

You can make the nvflash backups to get back to ics if you choose. I finally made the jump to jb and with cm10 now based on jb bootloader, it looks like development and ports are going to take off.
* I don't have enough hours in the day to try all the new development.

Re: [ROM] SKY-ICS 4.2F3-7 (UXCLF3 Base) 7/9/12 OFFICIAL ROGERS ICS AT&T/ROGERS SAFE
Message to noobs from a beginner.
This was my first root, flash, ROM and everything. I came from a 4s.
First I was pretty scared but I read most of the stickies and learned the "lingo".
I then researched and found that generally most folks thought very highly of Sean and his ROMs so I decided on this one. I wanted an official release and most posts thought Rogers was better than ATT. I'm an ATT customer btw.
First flash bootlooped. Had to switch to touch CWM from regular. Flashed the new touch cwm via Odin instead of buying it. Why it makes a difference I have noooo idea but the exact same steps allowed a perfect ROM install.
Next I was confused on radio choices. Used the RAT UNLOCKED Rogers at first but freaked out bc it want giving me any data. Had to switch from any option looking for LTE since its not available.
Touch UX is better than twlauncher but there are still some bus with settings, that don't stick even after saving sometimes.
Everything came in so easily from my google account and TiBu. Thanks for making that so easy. No APN work needed by me.
Eventually decided to flash the 6 radio and the 6 sky ics modded kernel. The combination of these two took my average ram, everything cleared, from 340ish to 240ish and the battery practically sits still. All I did was clear cache and dalvik for each flash and had zero problems.
This ROM is a very good one and ICS is much smoother than GB.
Don't be afraid to flash kernels or radios, just have a nice nandroid backup ready! I haven't needed one yet with these files.
Check out YouTube to see walkthroughs if needed, there are so many.
I thought about switching ROms yesterday, to Mohans new one. Even had it downloaded, but decided against it bc people were reporting awful battery life and is still based on an ATT leak instead of an official.
Noobs, read and learn. Doing this stuff is so easy if you do. If you haven't understood this post, itself very basic, don't flash anything yet!

Great Info
thanks for the info. Moved to seanz Dragon ics. Best rom ever for battery life and smoothness.
I did first flash with this Rom too. easy. i was also an iphone user. Swinched to droid a few years back but never got around to flashing till last weekend.

to root or not

ok my skyrocket is at android version 2.3.6. kernal 2.6.35.11 and baseband version 1727ucla3. my question is should i keep it like this or root it and go with custom rom. i had a infuse and was running the aeon 1..4sl rom on it and it was ok. was just curious as to what roms people like on theyre skyrocket. nothing really wrong with mine now its just plain as hell ya know. just want a rom that is stable and not glitchy as hell.
This is all personal preference my friend. Its your decision:thumbup:

I'm assuming you're running stock Gingerbread? I'm not sure how the stock AT&T ICS ROM was, but a lot of people that upgraded to the Rogers ICS ROM ran into performance issues (including myself). If you like your phone's configuration now, stick with it. If you think you're ready for something different, definitely check out some of the great ROMs around here.
For a while, I was on SkyICS. Great ROM, no issues whatsoever. I'm now running Liquid JB and, again, I haven't run into any issues with it. The devs here are awesome.
And I personally love the feeling of being free from bloatware. :good:
thank you so much ,big help man. and yes it is stock at&t . but i am gonna try and remember how to root it again. is odin still the way to root these things . i probably gonna have to read up a bit. but thx alot once again
would love a good jb rom, is it a long process coming from stock gingerbread to jellybean

I'm not an expert or anything so I'd advise you to read the sticky threads, even watch some tutorials on YouTube. Get confident before you flash. I don't flash very often so I get sweaty-palmed whenever I do.
I don't think it matters what ROM you have right now. Just install a custom recovery with ODIN and you can get flashing to whatever ROM you like in the Skyrocket development forum. Again, read and reread the thread.
Have fun!
i will man , reading now . but thx for all the input
You should incrementally step up from gb, to ics, to jb. Doesn't matter if you do stock ICS or custom, but I remember reading from someone much smarter than myself, that you had to be on ics b4 jumping on the jb bandwagon.
I must say though, if you decide to make the jump to custom, no matter what rom you choose you should have a good experience. We have some really good devs here and interest seems to really be ramping up on the skyrocket forums lately. In just the last month or so, we've had 3-4 major roms go official for skyrocket, and we have some great ports and variants of others.
If you like a stock experience with a bit of customization and good tweaks, check out embryo or sky ICS. Both are VERY solid roms. Feeling a bit adventurous but wanna stick to ics? Try out aokp milestone 6 or cm9 stable. Feeling downright ready for a crazy fun experience, try out any of the jb ROMs on here. I have probably tried them all, and they are pretty dang solid. I'm currently running slim bean and its great so far, but others have been fantastic as well. Orthus is a battery beast! I was consistently getting 17 hours with 5-6 hours of screen on time with that one. Aocp is fun and offers a ton of customization options. CM10 is a pretty safe bet as well. Hell, they are all good! Just Try them and you'll find one you like.
Happy flashing!

Have you tried stock ICS yet? If not, give it a try before you flash another rom. You just may like it.
Stock ICS on my S3
its always best to do some reading before you do some flashing and customizing yes there gonna be some " hiccups" but thats even with factory software. In my opinion root is always best because it give you the capability as the user to modifiy your phone to how you want it not how the company who sells u it wants it. and coming from GB to ICS was better then candy at the birthday party battery performance, better response was awesome and now since im on JB i even find myself out performing even some of the more recent Stock phones.
ultimately its ur decision but until you actually experience the difference we can only tell you on ours.
Roms that performed well for me:
GB=NexusMod
ICS= Embryo and SkyICS
JB= Slim Bean
go nuts
ok i rooted it today and am currently on the gb nexus mod, seems pretty cool . i have a couple of questions and i hope they are not ridulous sounding. first my 4g icon is replaced with h+. i am not in a 4g area anyway so its not really an issue unless it shouldnt have changed. the other thing is i dont know how to get to my external sd card files now. i used to access it from apps/files folder/external sd. but now i cant find that either. once again no biggie just had a apps restore on it .i can redownload the from play store but i would rather not.

That's an oldie but a goodie! Signal icon is normal. 4g is lte, which I guess you don't have in your area.
Use root explorer or similar. External ad is under. Sdcard/external sd card

Well there's cm10...
i did the ota update to ICS then I installed CWM thru Odin and then I installed a custom rom. the skyrocket is one of the easiest phones to root, upgrade roms and go back to stock if needed. i like Orthus for JB.
i was looking into the jelly bean roms and to tell you the truth they look like there is alot more to do on a install, is there any out there that dont have like 5 different things to install. i know about wiping and all that but i am afraid i would leave something out that i need if it aint included on the rom. i know it sounds stupid but is there a jb rom thats a put on root of internal sd ,wipe a couple times and install, lol

Jb roms aren't very stable. If you rely on your phone for work, alarms, and general stability I wouldn't use a jb Rom.

Newest/Easiest way to root while on ics?

I see so many threads about rooting while on jellybean. What do i need to do to root on ics? The plan is to root and then use a custom jb rom. Thanks for your help.
Any help with my n00b post would be great.
Look for the debugfs method in the Dev section. That works on ICS but not jb as loopholes are closed on jb.

You can't use a JB rom custom or stock while you have ICS bootloader and updating to JB may remove root ( mine didn't ) and will certainly remove a custom recovery ( CWM or Twrp ). You have to unlock to install custom rom or recovery so if you are sure you wish JB custom rom why not update to JB and start from there?
Unlock, custom recovery for JB ( Twrp is my choice ), custom rom flashed with Twrp. I have not flashed any custom roms for the TF300 that weren't already rooted.
Good Luck!:good:
Yep, I am probably going to just go ahead and upgrade. I thought when I read that there was an advantage to being on ICS (for custom ROM purposes) but it doesn't seem to be the case. So I will get fully updated and then go from there.
Thanks!

The possible advantages are NVFlash, cm9, cm10, etc. At this time no CM, AOSP, AOKP, Paranoid Android, and so on for the JB bootloader. Everything ( rom ) is based on the stock kernel. It is being worked on but not ready for release yet. The dreaded i/o issue on JB and probably others.
If I were in your shoes I'd stay on ICS for now and wait a while for things to sort out. On ICS I'd run CM10 or Hydro for ICS. Those are just my feelings.
Take your time and look around a bit more if you have any doubts.
If you are ready then by all means go for it!
:good:Good Luck!
Thanks for all your help. I did go ahead and make the jump to JB. Currently on CleanROM but have no idea which of the "big 3" I should run. I suppose I will have to try them all and see. Wish there was a good pro/con list of each ROM that I could reference.

The biggest con of running JB is that Adobe has removed support for flash from JB in anticipation of forcing everyone to go use HTML5. You also cannot use the NVFlash method of backing up some crucial files as a safety net (the developers claim that using NVFlash makes your device brickproof).
I am still waiting for the kinks in JB to be worked out before I switch. I'm on ICS bootloader still and I can run a JB custom ROM (Baked Blackbean) just fine, so I can have my cake and eat it too. I can try out the JB changes without making a full commitment.
Just my two cents.

[Q] Jelly bean 4.2 roms

How come there are hardly any, did something happen to block everyone? Or are they just still on holiday?
I wanna update to new 4.2 but cannot find any customs at all.

please look in the original development section there are probably 4-5 options there.
i believe theyre all still in beta though.
Awesome, will check it out!
Based on the threads I've been following, the 4.2 roms appear fairly stable yet people are still reporting issues related to bluetooth and mobile data.
Fair warning, flashing a 4.2 AOSP ROM carries with it a high risk for losing your number/IMEI (happened to me and took me hours to figure out how to fix). If this happens, you have to odin back to stock and reprovision the SIM card, which was a pain. Definitely sticking with TW 4.1.1 ROMs for a while. If you're looking for a 4.2.1 flavor, check out HELLSROM in the anroid development section, great ROM!

I've heard many examples of the same, it happens but I don't think it ought to detract from trying out an ASOP/CM ROM if that's what you really want. Check the Comprehensive IMEI/EFS Backup thread at:

Trying to Impress my Friend with Custom Rom

Hey Guys, I have a GS4 so please don't hate because I am asking questions and not trying for myself.
So my friend has a Blaze and he is looking to root his phone and flash a custom ROM. He is a borderline Android / Apple fan and I am trying to convince him to stick to Android.
So once I get him rooted I will be looking for a ROM/Kernel combo.. He needs everything to be working... Camera and everything else.
AOSP would be nice but from the ROM pages it looks like some of them have issues were he would flip out.
What is your best opinions on ROM/KERNEL combos to get his Blaze running smoother then stock without compromise?
Thanks!

Not trying to be rude, but you want to steer him away from an iPhone with a budget android phone that's 40% of the cost? If you really want him to like/love android and keep him away from the 'evil' fruit that grows on trees, he should spend the same amount of money on the phone and get a GS4 or One.
That statement aside, since you are 'stuck' with the Blaze (not necessarily a bad thing) you should go for this rom as it has the storage swap so there isn't any app/camera storage/other storage issues to run into. It's very stable and I ran it for about 3 weeks. Kernel is included.
Yeah you are 100% right.. he is stuck in a contract till November.
Thanks for the suggestion.
The most stable roms I have run are Beastmode's slim bean, and the latest cm10 nightly. Both on blue lightning kernel x2.
I've run both ParanoidAndroid and Liquidsmooth both with LightningZap 3.7 (though there was some inner folder work that had to be done) and both have been extremely stable for me. I also use Adrenalin injection and NOS_INJECTOR and my Blaze flys!

Yes, this will be your safest bet. Even though ParanoidAndroid was awesome, it was a bit buggy. I installed the latest CM10 nightly and the latest BlueLightning X2 kernel from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39919819&postcount=42
Its been several days and I haven't seen a crash.
