Last week I got the i727r from my work and was wondering if I have to be careful which roms I use. I am not on the rogers network but have unlocked it and using it with another network currently.
Am I ok installing at&t based roms in this case or do I have to be picky on what I install.
I have previous experience with rooting and installing roms, but seems like there might be some hickups.

From what I understand by reading the rogers based roms usually play nice with att but I don't know about the carrier your using.

There are some minor differences make sure the rom says it will work with the rogers version of the phone.
If it's a work supplied phone you most likely should not be flashing roms on it as if you ever need to fall back to odin or if you brick it then that's not cool.
It's not I work phone I just work for a dealer so it's unlocked working with my current provider. I had no problems getting root working and tried a few roms just nothing seems to satisfy my geek yet for the i727.
Seems like most of the roms are debloated versions of the stock rom, but the stock rom works so well I am not unhappy with it.
I do understand the risks of rooting and roming I have been doing it since the HTC G1 (Oldschool android lol) just my first Samsung experience all I can say is WOW!

If you flash att roms youll need to change your apn settings. And should flash red sonja rom
Debloated rogers rom is fine for now. I'm running the Go launcher with ICS theme and Roboto font and it is nice. We'll have to wait for new official roms to get some better 3rd party roms and that includes that Red rom.

Which ROMs are recommended for a SGHi727r? I have recently acquired the cell (and love it) but the guy in the store says its sooo much more capable when it isn't stock. (with stock settings, the cell would last only half a day... until I got JuiceDefender, now it lasts a full day hehe)
I was wondering which ROMs you more experienced guys would suggest. (and that would be ROMs that do not increment the flash counter of course, still not sure of how this works, however I do know how to verify it) My phone was rooted by using SuperOneClick

just be really careful what roms you are using i almost brick my phone twice using a i727 rom not really compatible with the i727R
so if you are not good with computer and dont know how to restore kernel, original roms and cwm to do hard reset and clean cache (cause sometime the ok button in android 3e recovery is not working at all ) with odin you will be ****ed !
im still looking for a stable version so if anyone have a good one please keep us inform
You will never brick flashing any 727 roms as far as use they should all work with proper setup pay attention to what your doing and bam problem solved

I have tried almost every rom on here, and have only had problems with certain MIUI due to the recovery i use. For Battery i found Alien ICS had the best battery it can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1608088

Now I know your not on rogers but if you need name display and want to use ICS you will have have to use an UCLE2 ROM/Modem. The best way is to read a lot i did and make your own decisions and just remember as long as you can get into Download mode you can use Odin to go back to stock
I have been using the CM9 ROM's since they came out, and they are fast, no buggier than any others, and I can get quite literally 24 hours on a charge with over 2 hours of screen time. Right now I have been on battery for 2.5 hours and I am still at 96%.
I personally don't think you can go wrong with CM9, but that's just my opinion, and you know what they say about those...
I have flashed pretty much every i727 ROM on my i727r and haven't had a problem.

well i have just changed from gb rc7 to sky ics 4.2e with the 15ish update and it is AWSOME for the i727r !!! you should try it out

Hey guys.
Just wondering is there a solution for downloading apps which are made for canadian based roms but i am use Sky ICS.
Basically it says that the software is not supported for this device. Is there a way to change the ID in the phone software so Google Play sees the device as a I727R (rogers).
Be nice if rogers would get their act together and release their rom so the community can start creating custom roms with it.

I am a total n00b here and I pretty much upgraded my i727r last month when Rogers released the official version. I was getting roughly 12-14hr of battery life at when I was using 2.3.5/6 (I dont remember the version/official Rogers). Ever since I upgraded I am getting 6hr of battery life which in my opinion is unacceptable, I simply cannot function with this phone. So my questions is the following is there a way for me to roll back?

Go with Sky ... I was getting 25 hours on light use.
First off, check your installed programs. There are MANY out there that with ICS installed automatically turn on your GPS. This would be a prime example of why your getting such bad battery life.
Secondly make sure of your OS version. Be that 4.0.3 or 4.0.4 or what ever it is. You may need to re odin the install.
I would say do a factory reset and reflash via keys of you don't want to flash cmw and run an ics ROM.
Went back to stock cause I thought I was having hard ware issues and was able to get much better battery life then you.
Decided on sky ics for MHL support as aokp and CM9 do not support and have found this ROM to have the best battery life.
Also find sky ics to be just as good if not better then when I was running GB (mhx 3.1 final)... No turning back now

If you dont like tinkering with CM9/AOKP I found that SkyICS was pretty good for battery use.

i think that is not the reason, i got 35+ hours every charge cycle . i am on GB 2.36 nexus mod and with faux123 kernel. that is the best battery life kernel i have found .

I would install "OS Monitor" and try to find out what is draining all your battery. ICS has better battery life. It is the the OS, it is something with one of your apps that's not playing nice with ICS. You might even have the same problem with Gingerbread if you return to it because the app just doesn't work well on the Skyrocket.
I just found an interesting one today with OS monitor. Homerun Battle 2...leeches juice from my Skyrocket every 2 seconds. Had to remove it.

I think I am going to give SKYICS a try. Especially since I have my SG2 from Bell here at work so if I brick my phone (knock on wood) I will have a backup phone just in case.
The only thing I am wondering is how do I root my phone, most guides are considering I am on Gingerbread and not ICS.

I'm making the transition from my old Droid X to the VZW Galaxy S3, and I have a few questions. The flashing process between these two phones are quite different and perhaps another ex-Droid X user (or just an all around knowledgeable person) could help me out.
1. To my knowledge, we were never able to flash Kernels on the Droid X because of its locked bootloader. So how does Kernel flashing work? Are there certain kernels that only pair with certain roms, or can you flash any kernel you like with any rom? I have a feeling it's the former, as I've already seen kernels categorized i.e. Touchwiz Kernels or CM10 based kernels.
2. With the Droid X, all roms were flashed using CWM. But with this phone that's not always the case right? Some may require a kexec method or even a custom recovery image, correct?
3. I've seen a few roms recommend backing up IMEI / MEID / EFS data before flashing. Is something I should consider doing whenever I flash, just as one would do a nandroid backup?
4. I've seen a few threads mentioning flash count, resetting flash count, etc. Should I be concerned with flash count? If so, why?
5. With the Droid X, before you could flash a rom, you had to make sure the firmware you were on was compatible with whatever rom you were trying out. For example, if you wanted to try cm7 you had to flash over the stock froyo kernel. If you wanted to try miui you had to flash over a stock gingerbread kernel. 1. Flashing kernels has been made as simple as flashing ROMs
2. kexec is outdated since the bootloader got unlocked. You can also still use CWM on this or there's another recovery that people like called TWRP (Download an app called EZ-Recovery from the play store, youll need it to flash any recovery)
3. Losing IMEI is a royal paiin in the arse, but it's rare. Either way you want to back it up. I believe the guide on how to do so is in the Development Forum.
4. I haven't tripped the flash count. Basically all it is is a way for Verizon to tell if you been f'in with your phone. I Believe that only AOSP/AOKP ROMs can trip it, not stock ROMS
5. It's a bit simpler flashing between ROMs on this phone. Just wipe data/factory reset and flash away. For the most part.
6. Yes it is basically.

To Elaborate on this just a bit, yes it is as easy as flashing roms but you were correct in saying that there are aosp kernels and there are tw kernels. just make sure the os version (ICS, JB) and the framework (TW, AOSP) match your rom and you are good to go!

If you are just getting your feet wet with tw roms, you might consider giving Bean's a try. I've been using Build 9 since it dropped and it's smooth.
imo, it's themed just enough to not look like a straight tw rom, the performance is great and the battery life is fantastic as well.
I've tried synergy once or twice and was never quite completely satisfied with it.

I haven't run CM or MIUI or any other AOSP ROM on this phone so take this with a grain of salt;
If you want cool stuff and constant bugs/lack of normal features go with the AOSP....
If you want some cool stuff and a nice stable daily driver... go with the TW ROMs. I've been running Synergy since 1.2(or 3 I cant remember lol) and I love it. Everything works on it, it's stable, and it's currently being ported to Jelly Bean so I can't wait for that shtuff. Eschelon and the rest of his team are good about listening to feature suggestions/requests too when they got time so more and more will be added.

The moral of the story...Try out a few different roms What is amazing for one person might not be for the next. I'm flashing new roms every few days because I always want to see what else is out there.

Yea I had beans for a little while... I honestly cant remember why I switched. I was just suggesting he stick with the TW ROMs period cuz I dont feel the AOSP ROMs are anywhere near stable enough yet.
Don't want to hijack OP's thread, but do any of you know how to check flash counter?
I will be getting my FOURTH sg3 this week, and this is the first time I will be returning a phone that I had rooted/unlocked/rommed. I'm all back to stock, just want to make sure I don't get a bill for $600.

How "rare" is it to lose the IMEI after flashing? And is losing your IMEI a possibility flashing any ROM or just certain ones like CM10 or AOSP, or are TW and Stock roms susceptible to this as well?

I honestly don't know. One of the devs for Synergy ROM said something to the effect its "a weird Samsung reboot code and so the phone automatically restores a bad backup of your IMEI. It's a fluke thing"
It's 100% random when flashing anything I believe.
If u use the synergy Rom to flash it automatically has a script to back up your meid number and stuff. I've flashed synergy official cm10 nightlies without a hitch. Just make sure that u obtain root and unlock the bootloader and flash recovery. Thus far I've had no problems. Btw synergy Rom is the best one out there. Jellywiz is a jb Rom it is awesome but only thing that doesn't work is sms at the present time. If u want to back up ur meid best tool to use is qpst just Google it. Also all in one tool that has been great for me unlocking obtaining root and stuff is Verizon gs3 casual tool. In order to use that tool u mist have java se framework which u can find at the java website. Any questions feel free to shoot me a message! Good luck!

Just to clarify. Synergy is a stock tw based rom and CM10 is well a cm based rom. Two different monsters and roms entirely.

I found this thread which looks like the Synergy guys made a script to backup IMEI. I gave it a go and was succesful in backing it up. Seemed much easier than the QPST method. Don't know if it will actually restore, but hopefully I'll never have to find out.

ok my skyrocket is at android version 2.3.6. kernal 2.6.35.11 and baseband version 1727ucla3. my question is should i keep it like this or root it and go with custom rom. i had a infuse and was running the aeon 1..4sl rom on it and it was ok. was just curious as to what roms people like on theyre skyrocket. nothing really wrong with mine now its just plain as hell ya know. just want a rom that is stable and not glitchy as hell.

I'm assuming you're running stock Gingerbread? I'm not sure how the stock AT&T ICS ROM was, but a lot of people that upgraded to the Rogers ICS ROM ran into performance issues (including myself). If you like your phone's configuration now, stick with it. If you think you're ready for something different, definitely check out some of the great ROMs around here.
For a while, I was on SkyICS. Great ROM, no issues whatsoever. I'm now running Liquid JB and, again, I haven't run into any issues with it. The devs here are awesome.
And I personally love the feeling of being free from bloatware. :good:

I'm not an expert or anything so I'd advise you to read the sticky threads, even watch some tutorials on YouTube. Get confident before you flash. I don't flash very often so I get sweaty-palmed whenever I do.
I don't think it matters what ROM you have right now. Just install a custom recovery with ODIN and you can get flashing to whatever ROM you like in the Skyrocket development forum. Again, read and reread the thread.

You should incrementally step up from gb, to ics, to jb. Doesn't matter if you do stock ICS or custom, but I remember reading from someone much smarter than myself, that you had to be on ics b4 jumping on the jb bandwagon.
I must say though, if you decide to make the jump to custom, no matter what rom you choose you should have a good experience. We have some really good devs here and interest seems to really be ramping up on the skyrocket forums lately. In just the last month or so, we've had 3-4 major roms go official for skyrocket, and we have some great ports and variants of others.
If you like a stock experience with a bit of customization and good tweaks, check out embryo or sky ICS. Both are VERY solid roms. Feeling a bit adventurous but wanna stick to ics? Try out aokp milestone 6 or cm9 stable. Feeling downright ready for a crazy fun experience, try out any of the jb ROMs on here. I have probably tried them all, and they are pretty dang solid. I'm currently running slim bean and its great so far, but others have been fantastic as well. Orthus is a battery beast! I was consistently getting 17 hours with 5-6 hours of screen on time with that one. Aocp is fun and offers a ton of customization options. CM10 is a pretty safe bet as well. Hell, they are all good! Just Try them and you'll find one you like.

Have you tried stock ICS yet? If not, give it a try before you flash another rom. You just may like it.

its always best to do some reading before you do some flashing and customizing yes there gonna be some " hiccups" but thats even with factory software. In my opinion root is always best because it give you the capability as the user to modifiy your phone to how you want it not how the company who sells u it wants it. and coming from GB to ICS was better then candy at the birthday party battery performance, better response was awesome and now since im on JB i even find myself out performing even some of the more recent Stock phones.
ultimately its ur decision but until you actually experience the difference we can only tell you on ours.
Roms that performed well for me:
GB=NexusMod
ICS= Embryo and SkyICS
JB= Slim Bean

ok i rooted it today and am currently on the gb nexus mod, seems pretty cool . i have a couple of questions and i hope they are not ridulous sounding. first my 4g icon is replaced with h+. i am not in a 4g area anyway so its not really an issue unless it shouldnt have changed. the other thing is i dont know how to get to my external sd card files now. i used to access it from apps/files folder/external sd. but now i cant find that either. once again no biggie just had a apps restore on it .i can redownload the from play store but i would rather not.

That's an oldie but a goodie! Signal icon is normal. 4g is lte, which I guess you don't have in your area.

Well there's cm10...
i did the ota update to ICS then I installed CWM thru Odin and then I installed a custom rom. the skyrocket is one of the easiest phones to root, upgrade roms and go back to stock if needed. i like Orthus for JB.
i was looking into the jelly bean roms and to tell you the truth they look like there is alot more to do on a install, is there any out there that dont have like 5 different things to install. i know about wiping and all that but i am afraid i would leave something out that i need if it aint included on the rom. i know it sounds stupid but is there a jb rom thats a put on root of internal sd ,wipe a couple times and install, lol

Jb roms aren't very stable. If you rely on your phone for work, alarms, and general stability I wouldn't use a jb Rom.

Orthus Five is simple. Do your wipes, flash rom, flash gapps, install bootloop fix. Bam.

Morning gentlemen. First time to this GS3 Verizon thread as I'm an ATT guy myself.
Anyways, there was some holiday the other day involving seeing lots of family and eating turkey and what not, and my father and I were comparing phones (my ATT GS2 Skyrocket, rooted, JB 4.1.2) (his Verizon GS3 stock unrooted). The short story of it is is that he really hates S-Voice and was drooling over Google Now that was on my phone. I told him the best way for him to get Google Now (for more reasons than just getting GNow) was for him to root his phone and then flash a JB rom. I would've done it myself but I was in a time crunch and didn't have a computer with me. He said he'd be willing to do it himself, just send him the instructions on how to do it.
I have the beginners guide that will get his phone rooted, flash CWM, etc. Now, however, I'm trying to decide on a ROM for him. For him, obviously GNow is the priority. He doesn't really need any bells and whistles, so here's where my question is. I know a ton of noobs come in here and ask "which ROM is best?" and we roll our eyes and tell them it depends on their specific needs/every ROM suits a different person/etc.
Well I'm just hoping one of you guys will point me in the right direction. I want an extremely stable JB rom. It doesn't need to have all the latest bells and whistles; it just needs to be stable, as it's his phone and we live nowhere near each other so I won't be around to troubleshoot a beta rom for him. It might as well be a "stock" JB ROM but man that sounds boring, so even a slightly prettier but uber-stable ROM recommendation would be great.
And to take it one step further in my ROM request... extra extra bonus points for a stable ROM that is easy to flash. The more idiot proof the instructions to flash the said ROM, it'd be greatly appreciated. The more one-clickish it is in CWM the better. I'm sure he can handle doing a data wipe/factory reset and maybe even a cache wipe but I'm hoping to avoid sending him a ROM to flash that asks him to wipe all caches, format the /system, flash a new kernel, gapps, radio, etc.
Who can point me in the right direction and recommend a highly stable JB rom with GNow that is extremely simple to flash?
I'd say synergy. I run a business from my phone so my criteria is stability. It's my daily driver and haven't had any problems as of yet. You'd still want to do a clean install going from ICS to JB though, regardless of what rom you choose.

Except for RC8 which is very buggy, I have had really good luck with the liquid ROMs.
With versions previous to RC8, the only thing that refused to work for me was NFL Mobile.

+1 I run synergy as well never had any issues with stability
Liquid Smooth Rom! I have run them all, it's definitely my favorite. I also use it as a daily driver. Like stated in a previous post, RC8 is buggy, but I have had similar bugs from every rom I have flashed.
CleanRom 5.0. It is like stock but without the bloat. It's smooth fast and retains all of his touchwiz features. Very very stable.

Also he could try jelly beans build 4. It's pretty much stock but looks aosp. Really sick looking but has all the touchwiz features.

Clean ROM
I am currently using Clean ROM 4.5 since I haven't had a chance to flash 5.0 yet. I find Clean ROM to be very stable and you can have it either very vanilla or mod it to your heart's content. You should still do a full wipe but you don't have to format anything. It would be best to flash the new radio and rpm but you don't have to do that. The process is simple: copy the radio, rpm and ROM zips to phone, go into CWM, do your wipes, flash radio, rpm, ROM in that order, restart, done.

I'll throw in another vote for Synergy. Running r118 right now and also haven't had any issues. Followed this guide to root, unlock bootloader, install CWM, and install the stock JB image: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114 . Very well written as long as you just go step by step and read everything 3 times.
Installed the latest Synergy ROM after all that and as stated I really haven't had any issues at all! I VERY briefly tried the CleanROM LE v4, but I really didn't care for the 5x6 launcher. It was nice to have more icons available on the screen, but it always chopped off part of the app name if it went onto 2 lines. I may have been able to change it back to 4x4, but to be honest I didn't really even want to mess with it as Synergy's was working great! Good luck!
After installing Synergy onto my dad's phone for him (visited him over the weekend) he calls me back and tells me he has issues with syncing up his corporate exchange email account that worked fine on the stock ICS. After some quick googling and XDA searching, apparently corporate exchange emails and JB don't play together very nicely. Can someone recommend a stable ROM that you personally know works with exchange email because you use it yourself? Or are there any simple workarounds?
