Send Any file to Any smartphone - Android General

Hi guys,
I'm thinking of writing an Android app which will allow you send any file to any smartphone. The smartphone you send to doesn't need to be a droid and it doesn't need to have the app installed.
Currently I use email to send most things (zips, images and docs) which is a pain since I don't have the email of most people on my contact list. If we're in close enough range I use bluetooth but that doesn't play so well with iPhones and apparently my Nexus S doesn't like WP7 phones.. I'm also know people use Whatsapp although not everyone I know (me included) has Whatsapp.
What I need from you guys is an idea of what apps you currently use to send files and what file types you send? I'd also be interested to know how many people would be interested in this app.
Call it market research - Mods please move if I'm breaching any rules or this is the wrong section

On my iPhone 4S, I use something called AirBlue Sharing to send and receive files from almost any devices capable of sending and receiving files via Bluetooth. Between iOS devices, if it isn't connected to Wi-Fi, it creates its own Wi-Fi network and transfers files through that Wi-Fi network. If it is connected to a Wi-Fi network, it will use that to transfer files. Basically, it will send files faster to an iOS device than to something else like an Android device.
I've been sending files from my phone to my tablet using AirBlue Sharing for many file types - PNGs, AVIs, MKVs, MP3s, and zip files. I've even received and sent APK files to and from Android phones and boy, those Android users are very surprised
Overall, if you want to create an app like this, I highly recommend that you use the awesome Wi-Fi transfer method.

Something like this could be nice
App Starts
_
Gives Your Phone An Id Based On Your Phone Number or Something Else
_
User Picks File
_
User Enters The Id of Target Phone
_
User of target phone grants permission to receive file from other phone
_
App uploads the file to the server
_
Target phone starts downloading
_
When the download ends target phone app tells server download ended
_
Server deletes file
_
End

Thanks for the replies.. I hadn't heard of airblue before so thanks for that. The second method suggested is kind of what I'm working on but alot more universal. Looks like the options currently are bluetooth or wifi which means both people have to be in the same place. Or a centralized server method which means both need some sort of account to talk to the server, both need the app installed and both need to be online aka Whatsapp.
Confirmed my suspicions that there isn't a universal app which doesn't require an account, doesn't require the receiver to have the app installed and doesn't require both people to be in the same place/same network. Well... there will be shortly

Application should use wifi hotspot and connect to other phone through wifi and simply share it...
I am having this type of application named Touch Pouch...
But it requires active internet connection... and you can send or receive files up to 300 MB....
For above 300MB its not working....
And speed is very good with this application ....

Nice concept! Goodluck!
Would be AWESOME if it would work with LAPTOPS too.
Goodluck!

Wifi Sync

Hello, I am looking for an android app that when i connect to my home wifi it looks for a folder on my computer and syncs whatever is in it onto a folder in my SD card. Any good recommendations?
Its not 100% exactly what you described, but have you tried Dropbox? Syncs a folder on your computer with the service, and you can sync that with the dropbox app on your phone.

You're basically describing Dropbox. As long as you have a data connection you can access anything in the folder and view/download straight to your phone. I keep all my root stuff in Dropbox so I don't need to keep it on sd card. That way anything I need, I downoad, use, and delete. Plus, it allows me to search and download roms while at work and then when I get home they automatically update to my home computer for flashing.
Click the referral link in my sig and we both get an extra 500mb of space (I have an edu email address). You have to install the desktop application to get your referral credit though.
EDIT - REFERRAL LINK
Hey thank you for the replys so far. I do have drop box and I do love it! But I am looking for that one extra step at the end. What I don't like about drop box is I have to then manually download the files from it to my phone. Basically want once I connect to my home wifi it reaches out to my pc and syncs with a folder on it to a folder on my sd automatically. I don't mind if I have to setup a share or file server on my pc.

Post if you find a good app, I'm sure it's doable. Would probably operate much like RemoteDroid does for the mouse. Love that app!
DUDE - found this earlier today but haven't clicked cuz dude has ONE POST and I'm not convinced it isn't a virus. Looked it up on www.SiteAdvisor.com and there is no record. I'm at work so not feeling brave, but if you are, then go nuts.

There's also Awesome Drop, but it's only computer to phone, not the other way around. Still pretty awesome.

I have kinda found what i was looking for in Android Manager Wifi. here is a link:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/android-manager-wifi/com.mobileaction.AmAgent
It has many options, one being able to select a folder on ur computer and one on your SD card for them to sync up automatically. Testing out to see how REALLY automated the whole process is. But none the less this is a great app for many things it seems. People should definitely check it out!
Didn't Double Twist just implement that? Need the "pay" version ($.99), but it has something called Air Synch. Look into this and let me know if it is what you want.

I was under the impression it only works with music files but I'll definitely check it out

Checked out Double Twist Air Sync and its not bad. But seems to only do music, videos, pics and playlist syncing. I need it to be able to do any kind of file/folder. But for multimedia people out there its something to check out.
Syncables is a broader sync solution than Double Twist

I've read similar critiques of Double Twist. I prefer Syncables through and through - and it think that's more of what you're looking for. Syncables will sync any type of folder, media file, spreadsheet, email, and even browser bookmark. It also syncs between Macs and PCs and smartphones like Droid and BlackBerries.
It has a wider suite of sync/backup/share products than the more niche Double Twist product...oh, and it has wireless sync capability using WiFi, as well.
I am actually writing an app that does exactly what you want. It's not done but the functionality is there to sync a folder (with no PC client needed). If you want to help me test it you can PM me with an email address to send you the APK.
Yea i will check it out. Sent you a PM
Just a random idea but is there an app that works with dropbox and automatically downloads changes to it to your SD card? Seems like that would also be sweet for alot of people.

Wifi Direct in Captivate

Ok I saw this option in the android system menu to turn on wifi direct, but I couldn't find anything further than that. How do I actually transfer files thorugh wifi direct??
Update:: MEthod for wifi file transfer from one phone to another.
Youu'll need ES file explorer on one phone and Swiftp on another
1. Toggle Wifi tethering on, on the device from which you will ransfer files.
2. Now connect the other device to this AP created by the tether.
3.Now on the same device(the one connected to the AP)start Esfile explorer and got to the ftp tab
4. Go to settings>scan. Es file explorer should now automatically find the other phone,
Just wanted to bump this thread....seems like no one's interested but I think wifi direct is awesome! and i know our phones are capable just that the right software is needed.

Not exactly what you want, but for transfering files by wifi i use the App SwiFTP. It's for free in the market (i can't post URL's cause i'm noob).
I hope this helps you ...
Air Droid is also amazing! It's free, and there is no windows installation required. You just run it on your phone. It gives you a web address and a password to enter on the website. Then you have access to your whole phone!

whats the best app for file share?

Hi All,
I have a wifi connection which can be connected to both pc and mobile. I need a great app for file transfer between my cell and pc without using data cable. ie using wifi. Please suggest.
Thanks,
Arun
I'm not sure about phone to pc, but for pc to phone, there's Awesome Drop. Not sure if that helps or not, sorry if it didn't.

Awesome Drop uses their servers and therefore requires a full internet connection. The OP is looking for an app like Airdroid which operates directly over your Wi-Fi and therefore needs no internet connection (plus it can do a lot more than file transfers).
If you search it for Android, maybe try Airdroid? It allows you upload or download files to/from your phone.
Thanks to it you can also write SMS using your computer and sent it from mobile

samba file sharing
free n simple to use
I agree with math.NUR.
Just set up SMB/CIFS file sharing on your PC and access it via a file manager that supports it like the ES File Explorer File Manager.
I vote dropbox.

True I upload to drop box all the time then download to other devices or my laptop etc

Sharing files through wifi!?

Is there a simple way to share files via Wifi? In similar way to sharing through Bluetooth, or as similar as possible.
It's just that my device doesn't have bluetooth and I need the ability to share files swiftly with others.
airdroid.
works well if a bit slow.

That doesn't seem like what I'm looking for. I want a simple way to send files between two Android devices using Wifi, just like one would do using Bluetooth.
Perhaps add a "send via wifi" option.

I keep seeing "Web interface" in it. Does this require the other end to use a browser?
I think on Galaxy phones, when you click share, you'll see Bluetooth and Text messages and Email along with Share Via Wifi. Is there an app that does that?

[APP][2.2+] AirStream: Access your computer like a Dropbox

Hi Friends,
Would love your feedback on our app - AirStream
We have built this awesome app using which you can access your files from Computer on Mobile devices from anywhere in the world. As you might have also experienced most of our data like movies, music, photos & even important work documents are still residing in our computers. Even today there is no easy way to access them on Mobile devices. But with our solution this is as easy as using Dropbox, imagine accessing all your files from your computer from anywhere in the world without any limit on GBs.
What you will love:
1. Access alll your drives & files
2. Easy & quick movie streaming
3. Integrated music player.. create playlists, import playlists, etc
4. Access computer over 3G/4G
Attached are the new builds that we will release on Google Play. Would love to hear your thoughts.
Procedure:
1. Install the apk in android
2. Copy the .jar version of AirStream desktop client to your computer & run it.
3. Login on both ends using the same credentials.
(both the .apk & .jar have been zipped due to size constraints. We have a .msi version but not able to upload due to size constraints)
Check the screenshots for your reference.
Awaiting your feedback.. feel free to reach us at [email protected]
Edit::
An older version of this is available on Google Play. The changes to the new version are:
1. Patched AirStream-Sky functionality on Android. Older version had a bug which prevented the app from accessing computer on external network. (There is still a issue on Desktop app, which sometimes require a router reset to access computer on external network)
2. Added indicator to notify whether the app is working on Local Wifi network or external network.
3. Much better graphics & UX. The app is much slicker & smoother than older one.

Right now the playback controls are only on the mobile app. Windows client only acts as a server, you login and it allows the mobile device to connect with it. Media playback & everything else is done from the Mobile app.. Hope you find is useful

Tested browser and transfer (only download from PC to mobile) on the same network, all work fast and smooth!
Hope it can transfer from mobile to PC/mobile, too!
Hi, got this up and going in a few minutes. It's awesome! Something I've been looking for in an FTP like client/server setup. The beautiful thing is AirStream's simplicity. Streamed music straight away and have yet to attempt a transfer. I understand server to client functionality is fully functional. I'm experiencing it. Is the reverse true of transfers? That is, client to server. I did see someone else ask this question yet it hadn't been answered as of this writing. Thanks for the app and sharing all the work you've placed into its development. Cool. Practical. User-friendly. Literally up and running in under 7-10 minutes! Sweet

Awesome app!!!. Ive been looking for something like this as my router wont allow me to forwad ports no matter what I do!.

Only thing id like to see its an automatic cache clear on exit as going through android/data annoys me a little, But thankyou very much for this :victory:

sweet ap:highfive: but I can seem to access files on my pc through this app using mobile data.
Thank you, just what I have searched form. Any way to run this app in linux headless server ?
