A lot of crap on the device p3110 - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well this may sound stupid but i masterd the root and flash method, i thought. But when i factory reset the tab, wipe cache and dalvik and all that there is still a lot of old crap on the device. There is however an option which says format sdcard, and there is the problem. I am kind of a chicken sh#t and do not dare to select that option, affraid of wiping everything and not be able to flash a new rom. Do i have to format sd begore flashing a new rom?

The crap will be there till you load another rom. Yiu can always remove some stuffs from system/app but i think you shouldnt. Hope some1 with more knowleege can confirm or correct me.

Depends on the stuff you want to delete, but wiping your SD card is not the right choice unless everything on your SD card is just junk.
Load a ROM that is more to your taste and/or use Titanium Backup to remove the bloatware that you want gone.
If you want to use stock ROM then root your device and use Titanium Backup to remove bloatware (back up the app then freeze it or delete it.) then reboot.

I tried that option when I had cm 10 on my tablet it deleted evething on my internal sd card but did not mess with my system ..after doing that I booted normally into cm 10 from cwm....:cyclops:

Nearly stock rooted 2.3.3

Is there a ROM out there with root, clockwork, etc etc already installed that wont completely wipe my SD card? I am tired of loosing EVERYTHING on my SD card each time I have to do simple tasks on this phone.
I am on a rooted 2.3.1 and loving it but I would like to try out another rom. Most of the roms out there now are for 2.3.2 or 2.3.3 only but to upgrade and loose root means to have to wipe my sd card again to unlock my bootloader hence my question
As far as I am aware, when you unlock the bootloader or flash a new ROM, it shouldn't be wiping your SD card (/sdcard).. However, when you flash a new rom, its highly recommended to wipe the Data & Cache. Though doing this DOES wipe your settings etc..
Since you already have root, you could simply download Titanium backup to backup all your settings/apps/data (there are plenty of guides for this..), then flash the new ROM, and restore everything with Titanium Backup again. The process is very simple and doesn't take long at all..
Also, most ROMs that are in these threads should already be rooted and contain superuser, busybox, etc..
The closest to stock that I've seen is here. There are four flavors and two of them are already rooted..Though I think this ROM is no longer going to be updated.
The current ROM I use is NSCollab and I would highly recommend it..It already is rooted and contains tweaks and a few apps like ROM Manager etc..
Actually when you unlock the bootloader it does delete your SD card, yes that includes your titanium backup folder ie you loose that too.
Wiping settings etc is no big deal, but wiping all my music, photos, titanium backups etcetera etc is what I am concerned about. I lost all the when I rooted initially

TI can sync to a dropbox account. As for the Contents of the SD card. Back those up before changing ROM's. My understanding is that it's the bootloader unlock that wipes the works (I did mine the day i got it, so it was already virgin)
Most of the third party roms offer upgrade paths without wiping, CM7 for example, you can keep updating and rarely do you have to re-install a thing.
but once you unlock the bootloader, you should never again have to wipe your sd card. at that point, any time you change a ROM, the sd card remains in tact and is not wiped. so you only lose data the "first" time you root. then from that point forward, you change ROMs at will and lose nothing etc.
If you can't use dropbox, you could simply backup with titanium and copy the contents from the sdcard to your computer, then unlock the bootloader..

wipe data/cache question

I understand the basics of modding...i currently have an AT&T skyrocket running the SKY ICE Rom. I've ran a ROM backup via Rom Manager. My question is, if i want to try a new ROM then i would run a backup right before installing a new ROM. then go through the same process as when installing the first ROM (wiping data/cache) right? Wont this delete my backups? Or what exact data is it wiping when you do it? and is it safe to have an external SD card in the phone when doing the wipe? I dont want to lose any information on my sd card and its always worried me so i take it out. thanks for any help
When you install a new rom there is no need to back up again if you already have made a back up recently (if it is a old back up then make a new back up and if not required delete the older back up as they consume a lot of space). Regarding the loss of SD card data, you need not worry only the data on phones internal memory gets erased.the back up which you make on rom manager is safe as it is stored on your SD card.hence, there is no need to take out your SD card when installing a new rom.

so doing a rom backup doesn't backup all your current apps and settings? i hate losing my aCar info and my plants vs zombies saves. when i did my first nandroid backup (before i flashed my current ROM) i had my SD card out i believe. and when i did the wipe through CWM it didn't completely wipe the phone out. i believe all the folders where still located on the phone.
i just want to backup my phone to the way it is currently and try out some new ROMs to see if i like one better and be able to go back to this one if i decide i dont like the new ones. i know that i can back up all my apps and user data with titanium backup and reinstall apps and such to a new rom if i choose to stay with it.
thanks

this is a good explanation. I did a data/cache wipe, but was wondering what stayed, and what goes away. I just updated to Franco's kernel (I'm using 4.0.4 ICS) and tried to get back to the stock kernel. well. I failed.

[Q] Titanium Backup

Hi guys, quick question
I have backed my phone up with titanium Backup, if I was to lose all my data how would I be able to re apply it? Would I just log in to titanium with my user name and upload everything??
I have looked at forums for the answer but have had no luck,
Thanks
Titanuim backup is an app. If you make a backup through this app it will back everything up into a folder on the SD card.
When you perform a factory reset it will wipe everything except whatever is on the sd card.
So after the wipe, install titanium from the market, and restore all the apps.
if your going to format the sd card, copy over the titanuim backup folder onto your pc or upload to dropbox or similar. Format the sd card, copy the folder back over and restore.
easy peasy

With out sounding to thick what I would do..
I dont have an sd card in my phone, so if I lost everything then how would I be able to get my details back on my phone?
Can I not just copy everything and put in in a folder on my computer, if then I lost all data I could then transfer it back to my phone from my computer
I did a superboot yesterday ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1577831 ) and when reading other topics about rooting they always tell you to back everything up...
Whats my best option?
Cheers
sorry im confused ? Are you using the One S now ?? or are you trying to back up files from an older phone to restore onto the One S ??
it doesnt matter if you dont have external sd (One S doesnt anyway) it will be backed up to the internal SD.
All you have to do is plug in USB and tranfer from old phone > PC > New phone

It is best to do a nandroidbackup. You can make a nandroidbackup in the recovery menu. When you have made this backup, you have copied everything on the phone as it was when you started the first time. To make a nandroidbackup you must have CWM (clockworkmod).

To back up full rom..like everything,as the post says above you would boot into recovery and back it up that way at the moment due to not having official clockworkmod..dont know if it is yet,but you can do that way.itll save everything just as you left it.
titanium back up will save apps and there data..
and can save the way you have saved your settings etc.
itll save your profile without needing to login.then click on options..then batch if its apps.or if its system data and apps choose that option.
beware though if you got 100 apps youll be there for a good ten minutes reinstalling lol.
(note--asop isnt around yet fully but dont restore system data from sense roms to asop and vice versa itll just mess your system up)
your external storage( will never be touched with relation to flashing roms etc.the only way it can happen is if your a complete numpty and select that option yourself.
best way to be honest is just play around with titanium youll get the hang of it

Thanks for the reply, when I go in to recovery it just starts the phone back up, what am I doing wrong, is there any chance you can give me the basic idiots guide on how to do this, dont want to lose all my stuff, if anything was to happen then I will be goosed..
when you go into CWM recovery and select backup, It just starts without confirmation.
It will save under a folder named 'clockwork' on your sd card, Inside that will be your nandroid backup, It consists of all apps, data, system, everything except firmware and radio. (which doesnt matter as you havent changed it)
if you every run into a problem that cannot be fixed, restoring the nandroid will put your phone back to the state it was in when you made it..
Titanium on the other hand, this backs up all apps and app data (game saves, login info ect) you mainly use this when changing ROM or doing a wipe. so that you dont have to install them all 1 by 1..
Only restore a nandroid when you run in to serious errors. NOT everytime you wipe / change ROM
Do you actually get into recovery?

Thanks for your patience, when I go in to Rom Manager I click on backup current rom, it tells me the date and time, I then click ok, the phone then restarts, when I look in manage and restore backups it's just blank??? I am using Rom Manager v5.0.0.6, is it better using a premium Rom Manager as I also have rom toolbox, when I click backup on this one it says that I must upgrade to be able to do this..

No mate far as im aware rom manager isnt supporting the s yet,the cwm had issues, youll need to switch off and boot into bootloader then choose recovery from there then into cwm then back it up.
switch off, hold volume then power till bootloader rocks up..choose recovery then your in clockworkmod then back up
+1 to that !! also, if you have root (i assume you do with having TiBackup) you can use quickboot - available on market for free, it will allow you to boot into bootloader, recovery, without having to do the button combo

[Q] Why does changing roms deletes everything

When ever I change roms it deletes all backups, and even deletes clockwork mod recovery. I have no idea what is going on. This didn't happen on my gnex. I have a 2 gig memory card in it. I think your doing something wrong because it shouldn't do that, what ROM hase it done that in? And what at our steps to flashing? As to backups on your sd car when you go to backup there an option to back up to external so card.

I was running jellywiz, and I flashed the executioner. I had to reinstall cwm. And I had to create the roms folder again, the folder where I keep my downloaded roms. As for flashing roms, I do a factory reset, wipe davlik, and cache. It's kind of annoying having to recreate everything. Thanks

Did you flash a 4.2 ROM??? It does that if you don't use an updated recovery.
You are definitely doing something wrong because that is not expected behavior.
A 2GB SD card is ridiculously undersized for backups. A single nandroid or TiBu would likely take all of that space if it even fit. Perhaps it's failing to backup to the external card and defaulting back to internal memory?

I would recommend at least a 16G sdcard. You need that much to stores backups, stock boot rom, custom rom, and you data files to restore. Things like contacts, calendar, etc should always be backed up before you install custom ROM.
CWM is a good boot loader to use as it provides many options and also use something like Titanium backup as your backup manager.
If you do a data reset from the updated recovery will it delete the directory on the internal SDCard where the backup of the stock ROM is?

What recovery are you talking about? If it's cwm touch no it doesn't! I factory reset every time I flash a new ROM (and I'll flash a couple a day sometimes) the only way you'll delete those in recovery is if you manually delete a backup or if you go under the mounts and storage menu and format internal SD card.

So I am talking about the clockworkmod stock rom backup. When I backup it puts the backup in the following location which I will call LocA:
/mnt/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/
This is not my SD card tho. My external SDCard is located at which I will call LocB:
/mnt/extSdCard/
But I also have which I will call LocC:
/sdcard/
I when I go to look at the ‘Phone’ while connected to USB I can see LocA and see the backups, when I use the app SDCard Manager I can go to LocC and I can see that they mirror each other. Why is my stuff duplicated? It is wasting space?
Also when I boot into CWM recovery the menu that says load from SD card actually points to LocA. My fear is that since LocA is really internal memory that a factory reset will delete this and since CWM recovery cant see LocB that I will be locked out. In other words cant load the backup of the mod or the new downloaded CM10.

Okay gotcha, a factory reset does not delete your internal memory. What it deletes is your user apps, settings, etc. That is the same place mine is backed up to and like I said I factory reset every flash. However, if you're really worried about under the backup option in cwm select backup to external SD card.
As for the sd card 0 and SD card. I don't believe there are really two files of everything. I believe it's more just naming for the android system, but maybe someone else can confirm this for me

How to completely wipe phone and install custom rom?

Hi guys,
I have a custom ROM installed on my phone which is Dirty Unicorns. I would like to completely remove all my apps and programs and start fresh using this custom ROM. When I do a factory reset I notice that the folders to my previously installed programs are all still there. Is there anyway to completely start fresh with a custom ROM?
Thanks,
Rocky
If you mean you also want to wipe your sdcard / entire storage it depends what recovery you're using
TWRP and Philz have a special option to do this, however - "official cwm" doesn't. But no one should use official cwm because its no longer maintained by the official dev. Its been left behind and very outdated

Hello,
Thank you for your reply I greatly appreciate it. I am using a Nexus 5 with TWRP. The problem I run into is when I uninstall apps that I didn't like they leave folders behind on my internal storage. I don't know why but I don't like that. Therefore, after I end up with a handful of them I like to reinstall the ROM to get rid of them. Sometimes I just like to start over fresh too. What happens though is when I do a factory reset it leaves these useless folders behind as well as folders for the other programs I have installed. When I erase the internal storage to get rid of all the installed apps and the useless leftover folders I lose my files to reinstall the ROM. This leaves me with a phone that is unbootable because it now has no ROM installed and it deleted my install files which were saved to the internal storage. There has to be a proper way of doing what I am trying to accomplish I just don't know what it is. I think there is an easier way the way I am currently using.
What I normally do when I want to start over completely fresh on a custom rom is I fire up Nexus Root Toolkit. Then, I reinstall the latest factory ROM. From there I root the phone and install gapps and my custom ROM. Finally, I flash a custom kernel. This way is a pain in the butt. Like I mentioned I know there has to be an easier way to accomplish this. I just started messing around with rooting and installing custom ROMs not too long ago. I am trying to learn as much as I can, and I actually tried Googling this problem but couldn't find anything. If you or anyone else knows how to go about this could you please post me instructions on how to do this? That would really help me out ALOT. Thanks again for your reply and for your time.
Rocky
Try SD maid from play store to remove unneeded folders
Please don't use toolkits for anything
Edit. If you're just wanting to clean stuff up on your sdcard though, when flashing ROMs, just flash the ROM then wipe storage I'm TWRP.

Ahhh nice yes that is a great idea. Would this work as well? If I created a backup of the ROM without anything installed and then one after I get everything the way I want it with apps installed. Then, when I wanted to start over again fresh I could either flash the one of the fresh image or the one with everything how I want it. Would this get rid of the leftover folders from uninstalled apps as well, or would my internal storage but left untouched?

Bit of both actually. It won't change sdcard or even back it up. But you could take a backup as a "baseline" and keep it on your computer. Wipe storage then copy backup there to restore.
