Contacts - General Questions and Answers

Anyone aware of the location on an android phone where the data for the contacts is actually stored?? I want to pull that info from a rooted phone to put onto another phone. The previous phone is semi bricked. I want the info before i wipe and reload. Thanks

Aren't your contacts synced with your Google account?

If you synced your Google account, by default it's turned on, as soon as you log in to your new device, your contacts will sync to your new device. No need to know where they are stored.

Install this from the Play Store, and export the contacts to the SD card. Then send it in a mail or whatever you prefer.

Oooh! data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts.db (i think). Try to ADB it out if you know how to use it.

Mine was contacts2.db, just cd into it with adb shell and run ls to find what it is.

New Nexus S - Should i wait ?

Hello
Just got my new Google Nexus S : )
I wanted to know if It would be better to wait till google releases the new ICS 4.0 Andriod and get it updated and then go with New Roms
or
Should i install a new ROM now for better speed and stability ?
If yes, which ROM should i start off with as i am a total beginner with Rooting/Flashing etc.
I dont mind waiting till 4.0 Android is released...
Any suggestions ?
Putting ROMs on it now doesn't exclude you from putting ICS on it later. Go have fun with it and try out different ROMS. When ICS comes out, you can put that on it too. No restrictions !!
But wouldnt rooting the device bar me from updating to ICS officially from Google ?
Yes but there will be ICS ROMs released here that you can install
Stock Android is actually pretty good and very stable. But if you want to toy around, just go ahead and have fun with the great ROMs we have available now.
Greetz
U can also flash back to stock when ics comes out and update officially and reroot and your good

Is this a good tutorial on rooting Nexus S ?
www(dot)youtube(dot)com/watch?v=EA6DlAqYUeo
Can i follow it to root my phone or should i follow some other guide ?
That is the one I used...how ever I would suggest getting a 5.0.2.0 recovery image as the one in the file that goes with that video is an older version...it will still work though.

Which ROM or Kernel did you try out ?
How about using Rom Manager by ClockworkMod?
Which program to use for backing up Data (contacts, messages etc) before Rooting the device ?
off topic, but since you asked about backing up contacts im sure this could help. Go to your contacts, and choose the option to back them all up to SD card. After that, choose to delete all your contacts from your phone, then restore the backup from SD, but choose to restore them as gmail contacts instead of to your phone. This way when you sync your gmail account your contacts will just repopulate. Very handy when flashing new roms ect

When i import "IMport from USB Storage", it does not ask me to import as Gmail Contacts.
How do i do that ?
For me,
I will import my contacts in gmail (via browser in pc) so i can manage easily, edit, create group, etc..
and finally sync it all to phone.
That was i done when i use android for the first time.

temporary solution:
get all contacts from TMO website manually
That's why you should always sync to Google

Yes! Especially with their new motto! They want to know as much about you as possible... and by syncing your contacts with them, you are feeding them what they need to survive... Reminds me of the Little Shop of Horrors... Google sitting around belching, "FEED ME!"

Copy the MobileBackup.apk to your sd card. You can use 'Super Manager' from the app market. Open 'Super Manager' then go into file manager. Check your settings in Super Manager by going into setup/root and make sure 'enable ROOT function' is checked. Find your MobileBackup.apk on your SD Card and copy. Press 'Back up level folder' twice. Go into 'system/app' and make sure 'system is set to (r/w). Paste the MobileBackup.apk in the folder.
But like the others said... you really should use GMail to backup your contacts.
Thanks!
haha thanks everyone, I think it is just a bug he hasent worked out yet cus when i use the app switch me (kinnda like dual boot, only just 1 rom) I found all of my contacts were there when i tried syncing tm contacts from the .apk I ported ...
my solution to get on my main boot was to save a .vcf to my sd.
BTW- Thanks everyone for your help

how can i access them
You access them through your device. I.e., when you install a new rom, do a recovery, or log from a new device, apps, settings, etc will sync automatically.
You can't access them directly as far as I'm aware.

As far as that issue..... if u made a nandroid backup before u flashed then it will be there. Or I just go to sprint.com and it has call logs there once ur bill posts.
For the future.... use Google voice. It backs up everything. Just install it and then set it up via desktop version to save it all.
Its saved me multiple times especially during my flash-aholic days.
Good luck

[Q] How do I prevent a specific app from being uninstalled

I have an app on my phone that I would like to prevent from being uninstalled in the event of being lost or stolen. How would I do this. I have been searching the web and most people say its not possible but how is that bloatware is seemingly impossible to get rid of? Would it be possible with a rooted phone?

The best way would to put the app in /system/app but you'll have to be rooted for that

Yes I am rooted. How would I make it so the app installs with all the current settings?
For example if I have an app that shows me the current location of my phone via email I would need the email settings to be loaded each time.

After you move it to /system/app and set permissions just log in like normal and all of your settings should still be there... just keep in mind a factory reset or a need rom will delete it. So after each time you flash a new rom you'll need to move the app back to /system/app

Bear in mind that the first thing anyone will do if they steal your phone is wipe all data, so this won't achieve much unfortunately.

emulator for nandroid

I need to extract info from a nandroid of my dead HTC Senastion.
Anyone know of a PC emulator for Nandroid or Titanium backup?
Ive read that Titanium can open Nandroid files...is this true?
Ive tried nandroid browser from market but cant seem to extract much with it.
Nandroid manager is an app that does the work you want. But actually.. The thing is that it is an android app... Try on an android emulator for pc and run nandroid manager through it.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Needs root (Im not going to root my new Nexus) so PC emulator is what I need.
Looking at the app....options are to restore texts, contacts etc but can I explore these on a PC with this app?

No, IMO, it won't ever boot. Despite that, contacts and sms msgs are not like for example system apps that you can extract easily from the nandroid...
If you can resurrect your senny, I believe your only solution is to restore the backup. And then you can make a backup of your sms msgs using a 3rd party app, and your contacts by logging in to your gmail account, sync it, and log back in in your nexus 5.

Used this app and it wail restore call logs, texts, etc. but you need root. Without root there really isn't a way to do it. If you need more info pm me.
