Yes! Especially with their new motto! They want to know as much about you as possible... and by syncing your contacts with them, you are feeding them what they need to survive... Reminds me of the Little Shop of Horrors... Google sitting around belching, "FEED ME!"

Copy the MobileBackup.apk to your sd card. You can use 'Super Manager' from the app market. Open 'Super Manager' then go into file manager. Check your settings in Super Manager by going into setup/root and make sure 'enable ROOT function' is checked. Find your MobileBackup.apk on your SD Card and copy. Press 'Back up level folder' twice. Go into 'system/app' and make sure 'system is set to (r/w). Paste the MobileBackup.apk in the folder.
But like the others said... you really should use GMail to backup your contacts.

Thanks!
haha thanks everyone, I think it is just a bug he hasent worked out yet cus when i use the app switch me (kinnda like dual boot, only just 1 rom) I found all of my contacts were there when i tried syncing tm contacts from the .apk I ported ...
my solution to get on my main boot was to save a .vcf to my sd.
BTW- Thanks everyone for your help

New Nexus S - Should i wait ?

Hello
Just got my new Google Nexus S : )
I wanted to know if It would be better to wait till google releases the new ICS 4.0 Andriod and get it updated and then go with New Roms
or
Should i install a new ROM now for better speed and stability ?
If yes, which ROM should i start off with as i am a total beginner with Rooting/Flashing etc.
I dont mind waiting till 4.0 Android is released...
Any suggestions ?
Putting ROMs on it now doesn't exclude you from putting ICS on it later. Go have fun with it and try out different ROMS. When ICS comes out, you can put that on it too. No restrictions !!
But wouldnt rooting the device bar me from updating to ICS officially from Google ?
Yes but there will be ICS ROMs released here that you can install
Stock Android is actually pretty good and very stable. But if you want to toy around, just go ahead and have fun with the great ROMs we have available now.
Greetz
U can also flash back to stock when ics comes out and update officially and reroot and your good

That is the one I used...how ever I would suggest getting a 5.0.2.0 recovery image as the one in the file that goes with that video is an older version...it will still work though.

Which ROM or Kernel did you try out ?
How about using Rom Manager by ClockworkMod?
Which program to use for backing up Data (contacts, messages etc) before Rooting the device ?
off topic, but since you asked about backing up contacts im sure this could help. Go to your contacts, and choose the option to back them all up to SD card. After that, choose to delete all your contacts from your phone, then restore the backup from SD, but choose to restore them as gmail contacts instead of to your phone. This way when you sync your gmail account your contacts will just repopulate. Very handy when flashing new roms ect

Contact photos question

Hi all! Asking for a little help from the xda crew. Yesterday I went through the process of rooting my sgs4g, doing a Titanium Backup, flashing from Froyo to the GB starter pack, and finally installing Valhalla Black edition. Everything went *super* smooth and I love it! The only issue I have is that my contacts will not populate with facebook photos, which I believe is because Valhalla does not use the "accountsandsync.apk"
I believe this to be true based on this thread in another forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102157
Now, that being said, I thought I could just reinstall from my TB file, but I think this is where I made a small mistake yesterday. I backed up "all apps+system data" and when I try to restore the accounts and sync file TB hangs up at the popup window. After doing some research it appears that this may be due to the fact that I saved it with the Froyo system data? *If* all I've said so far is true, could someone please share the "accountsandsync.apk" and anything else I might need to restore this feature in GB on Valhalla Black?
Some simple instructions on where to put the file and how to install would be welcomed with a smile as well!
If I'm incorrect in my assumptions, hopefully someone will get me pointed in another direction so that my phone will populate my contact list with facebook photos again.
To be complete in my attempts at a fix I have tried multiple scenarios between syncing with google, and in the facebook app sync menu with no results.
Thank you in advance for your help!
-Devlin.
My contact pictures always worked fine, even with Valhalla Black. After using TB to restore apps, make sure you log out of Facebook app then log back in and select sync all. After that my contact pictures always populate afterwards. Even the newest Rom by Raver works fine.

Hi, thanks for your reply. For s&g I tried to log out and log back into the FB app but this didn't update my list. This is certainly not a ROM issue. It has to do with not being able to restore my 'accounts and sync' apk. I imagine my contact photos would work if I could restore the accounts and sync apk from TB, but as I stated TB hangs when I try this. I believe this is because of the way I backed it up while still on Froyo. I believe that I need the actual apk from someone currently on GB in order to make this work again...so, original request still stands. Thanks again.
Yes.. rather than use TB to restore I would push the .apk. Anytime you can do fresh installs in better than using TB because it can sometimes cause issues. For future reference you can get most .apks from other ROMs like the stock GB rom.
I use 'Super Manager' from the app market. Open 'Super Manager' then go into file manager. Check your settings in Super Manager by going into setup/root and make sure 'enable ROOT function' is checked. Find your AccountAndSync.apk on your SD Card and copy. Press 'Back up level folder' twice. Go into 'system/app' and make sure 'system is set to (r/w). Paste the AccountsAndSync.apk in the folder.

Thanks a bunch. The app shows up in my app drawer, but force closes when I click on it. I tried to navigate to the file in the system/app folder and set permissions but Super Manager has a blank screen for permissions. Tried install and that process failed as well. Now I'm at a loss for ideas. Might you have any yourself? :/ Also did a reboot, tried to resync with FB app, no success.

I flashed Raver's latest ROM. It had Accounts and Sync in it.
If you have not done it yet try fixing permissions. Uninstall facebook reinstall. Clear cache, fix permissions, uninstall, reinstall fresh... these are all the things I would try.
If all else fails flash the most current release and see what happens. I don't use facebook.
EDIT: Look at the attached files in my previous post. I added one. You may be needing that apk as well.

I saw the "accounts" menu item in settings in my release but it force closed when I tried to use it. Next weekend I should have some more time to do a fresh install and update to the new release. I am on the Beta Rc2 release and I LOVE IT!! As soon as I get my tax return Raver's gonna get a donation!!
Glad you have it working!

Not sure why, maybe you may have accidentally disables contacts backup in settings. But you can also perform a manual backup of your contacts and backup that file to PC.

Try to find any information after Sinchronisation in the Debug.txt file (%APPDATA%\MyPhoneExplorer\Debug.txt) or in MPE menu File>Settings>Connection>Show log file.
the debug file is attached.
it has to many characters to post it.
hope you get more of it than i do

This file is too old (26.06.2012).
1. Look where is you database folder (File>Settings>Advanced 2>Database)
2. In this path + folder "MyPhoneExplorer" must be actual "Debug.txt" file
3. The next go to the folder of yours phone profile (seems it's name is "unknown HTC Desire S [356708041825488]")
4. Open file "Phonebook.dat" as TXT. In this file have to be your contacts in the simple Vcard format
If you couldn't find your contacts. Try to reinstall MPE
I will try a reinstall.
But for now i used Thema contactsms Backup app and it saved my messages in a .xml
But recovering does not work.. it shows a Pop up with "working" but even after the whole night recovering it didint work properly..
any suggestions about that too?

[Q] [SOLVED] Need help restoring corporate gmail acct to JB with TiBu

I've always been able to restore my corporate gmail account using TiBu by restoring the Accounts system data when going from Froyo to GB, or GB to ICS. However, for some reason, when I restore to JellyBean it does not work. TiBu doesn't report an error, but the account isn't there after the restore. I'm sure it's a compatibility issue of some kind, but does anyone out there know how to do this?
Thanks!!
[EDIT] Turns out TitaniumBackup kept restoring my accounts.db file to data\system, which is probably where every Android OS has kept it pre-JellyBean. I did some searching through this folder and found another accounts.db file in data\system\users\0 folder. This .db file had only my personal gmail account listed in it, so I knew that this is the one the phone was using because the TiBu backup one I restored would have had my work gmail account also in it, which wasn't showing up on the phone at all. I renamed the active one in data\system\users\0 to accounts.db.old, and then coppied the one that TiBu restored to data\system to data\system\users\0 folder. Rebooted and I had my work gmail account restored!! If anyone's wondering why I had to restore the work gmail account, it's because the password is encrypted and I don't know it. So, when switching ROMs, I would always have to restore the "Accounts" data from TiBu to regain access to this account.
Did you go to menu settings, account & sync and try adding the Gmail account?

Yes. The problem is, it's an account through my employer and I don't know the password. So, the credentials are stored in the "Accounts" system data backup in Titanium Backup. In all ROMs previous to JB, I could just restore that system data file and get the account back password auto-entered and all. Thanks for the reply, though.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
Not trying to be wise but is this your phone or a corporate phone? If your phone, ask for the password you have that right, if a corporate phone, ask for forgiveness for playing around with different ROMs. I would never let work put on a corporate account on my phone...because it gives them the right to view your phone if issues at work ever occur. I handle the cell phones at my work and that is our policy.
But having said that and now getting off the soapbox, if you need the corporate gmail that bad, I would go back to ICS until you can research it more. With any luck it might only require an update on Titanium.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda premium
I don't think tb will properly restore depending on version of jb since some of them code differently and since most are formatted mtd instead of yaffs which is standard.
Blah blah ... what I am saying is reset up by hand ... or go back to ICS. Unless u can extract the back up on a PC an send u any information you need

If you synced your Google account, by default it's turned on, as soon as you log in to your new device, your contacts will sync to your new device. No need to know where they are stored.
Install this from the Play Store, and export the contacts to the SD card. Then send it in a mail or whatever you prefer.
