There are a few different people that have tried it in that thread using other phones. If nothing else, it doesn't hurt to try it (as long as you have backed up your Gallery2.apk)

I have it on my phone now. Camera works, editing/filters works, gallery works, panorama mode does not work, 1080p video recording records a file but it's garbage, 720p video recording does not even create a file. Photosphere gives a message about hardware not supported. I did not experience any FC's, and I only used the GoogleCamera.apk and 2 of the 3 libs, I already had a libjni_mosaic.so so I didn't copy that. Picasa Sync seems to work.

I didn't backup my Gallery.apk.
Just pushed it to system.
Gallery did FC for me. But I was following the link I posted in the OffT thread.
The OPs link is the source link. Follow that one for best results
It did not have the patches/fixes in place. (hence why gallery did not work)
I didn't thoroughly test it either. Just tried a few shots, along with the settings wheel and photosphere (assume thats what you mean by panorama)
It was 4 am so I deleted it, restarted phone and crashed out.
Good to know that it has the issues you mentioned though.
Liquidzoo:
I deleted my links posted in the OffT thread and pointed people to this thread.
Even though I posted mine last night, I decided that the link to AC was a better one.
Much thanks.
I didn't know that it was posted in the OT thread. I thought that, much like the Gmail and Keyboard apps, it deserved its own thread.
No worries. I agree, and that's why I pointed ppl here
Didn't want to start a new thread. Not my personal cup of tea.
I went ahead and backed everything up and pushed all the files....reporting the same as you guys
Here's 2 additional mirrors, it seems that might be different than I put in the OP:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/1...gallery-app-with-new-ui-editing-photo-sphere/
There's something in the article that makes me think it's been patched.
Here's a patched version that works on all phones. Just tried it and gallery works, google/picasa sync works, camera and photoshepere work. Sphereview does not.

On a previous install, I could not change the storage location. Is this because it comes from Nexus or has it been updated to allow an SD storage?

That was not necessary. I didn't change anything to get it to work. The patched version I posted works on any phone.

Great The only thing I still have to try if video is sent from one Android-Talk App to another... It doesn't work for the desktop at the moment and it doesn't work for the front camera... that's probably why Google just rolled it out for the Nexus S... I hope they'll fix that soon!

I placed said lib in correct-is it replacing something or just drop it in?
Backed up old g app and moved at to external sd, then cleared data.
Uninstalled old app, and installed new app.

Anyone have any idea why I can't get write permission on the system folders? I'm using file expert with superuser access, but for some reason it just won't let me change access permissions on the system folders.

Im having problems with audio and video chat, the problem is i dont have any option to initiate audio/video chats?
I have selected allow video and voice chats but i dont know how to make them, only text chats.
I can recieve video and audio but i cant send any.
Also switching camera's force closes the app.
Any help?
i followed the instructions to the dot but had a little prob every thing works on my end perfect i can see the person and my front facing camera works as well but the other person can not see me i havent tried it with tablet to tablet i only have tried it with tab to pc.... any sugestion that could help me or should i just leave it alone up untill some thing new comes out its an att tab which i have rooted and updated the fermware on it to the europian version
First of all, I can't take credit for any of this.
I just tried random parts until 2-Way Video Chat started working.
I got all of the info and files from:
[APP][ROOT] Google Talk 1.3 with Video calling, Now wifi optional!
This is tested working with JVH/JVB.
Edited 5/18 -- Simplified install instructions.
1. There are 3 files in this zip, gtalk.video.captivate.zip, which is not CWM flashable.
-Talk.apk is from Android 2.3.4 and is hacked to allow chats over cell data.
-GoogleServicesFramework.apk is from gapps-gb-20110503-signed.zip
-libtalk_jni.so
2. Use Root Explorer to move Talk.apk and GoogleServicesFramework.apk to '/system/app/'
-Rename the old files (ex: Talk.apk.bak)
-Paste in the new ones
-Set permissions of both to rw-r--r--
-NOTE: Replacing the GoogleServicesFramework.apk will force you to sign back in to Google Services
-Some builds don't require this GoogleServicesFramework, but in my testing both JVB & JVH won't work without it
3. Then move libtalk_jni.so to '/system/lib/'
-Rename old file if applicable
-Paste in the new one
-Set permissions to rw-r--r--
4. Reboot
5. Open Talk, click on your username, and check the box for 'Allow video and voice chats'
That's It.
Hopefully a flashable zip coming soon.
Bugs:
Video call only works in landscape. (portrait mode sends a blank screen from phone to pc)
Can only initiate calls from phone.

Hey just double checked it again with Continuum 5.4.1 (JVH Based) and it worked there as well. Zip definitely contains all 3 files maybe try to download it again?

This works on my CM7 captivate. It's cool to at least see video chat with other gtalk users, even though it is a pain that they see what's in front of me and not me.

That was only for the Vibrant. You can retrofit the camera module that comes with the Euro Galaxy S onto it and flash a ROM that supports it and it will work. I remember seeing one of the MobileTechVideos where they did it and he showed you why it wouldn't work on Captivates. Part of the plastic body was in the way or something.
Thanks

HELL YEA IT DOES, just tested on my Apex 8.2 (JVQ) and it works awesome.
Also i've only tested from phone to comp, no one in my lab has a ffc on their phone but I will be testing it tonight.
One bug is that sometimes the first time i try to call my buddies computer it sends them an error but when I try again it works out!
Nonetheless this is freaking awesome and lospulpo you have my thanks
This is fantastic, running stock MV. Works great as a streaming camcorder so my parents can watch my kids play.

This works. All I had to do was flash with cwm. I have tested it on wifi and 3g (No 4g in my area).
Now to see developers like @kejar31 to add this to there next roms.
So I have noticed 2 things.
1. They can't hear you but you can hear them.
2. After about 30 sec or so it will pause their video and you can unpause it. It wil actually show the || symbol.
Don't have an answer for you as I'm on froyo however I'm sorry about your phone and incident.

I like Cyanogenmod, but the big issue I have with it is it's 'incompatibility' with Google Camera; it crashes every time I open it.
On stock ROM (RUU) the camera works just fine. The main difference I notice just before it crashes is that it uses the new look as seen on the Pixel/Nexus phones.
The other issue is not being able to restore from a backup when setting it up.

Thanks. I didn't get a chance to post back yet, but I tried the paid version of Snap-HDR that I've owned for some time and it works okay after disabling the stock camera app. It works, so far as I can tell, but it had force-closed on me a couple of times. I might try wiping and reinstalling with a slim set of Gapps without the camera app. Then install Snap-HDR as the primary. It is MUCH better than anything CM or Google have introduced to date.
Will post back the results.

This thread is a starter for the GCAM devs to hopefully provide us a working GCAM for the essential phone based on the new update. As of right now, you need to be on P at a minimum.
YOU NEED TO HAVE LOGCATS FOR HELP How to LOGCAT 101
You can also use a ondevice logcat tool, like matlog. I clear matlog, start it, directly create my problem, go back to matlog, stop it, then sort by "CAM" in this case, so i can see all camera related errors, then save it.
The idea is this.... all of the major gcam devs have the OP6 or something that isn't the essential phone. If we politely tag them, and have a logcat in hand, perhaps we can get support quicker for our device.
OP6 GCAM Thread
THIS IS FOR READING PURPOSES ONLY, DO NOT SPAM THEIR THREAD WITH REQUESTS, THERE WILL BE FM ACTION IN DOING SO
here is the link for @Arnova8G2 first beta
BETA 1
Hopefully, this will help get the ball rolling. Once i get home from work, i will have logcats for slo-mo, and no-hdr later.
If anybody else wants to help, again, please be descriptive with your problem, and provide a good logcat
@Arnova8G2 and @cstark27 (even though I know your moving on)
Here are logs:
1. Slomo crash. Slomo worked on test3, as long as we patch media profile, it works in general
2. No ability to take picture with hdr off
3. Taking a picture with zoom
I know these are already issues by in large. Maybe my logs will help.
Thank you for your help

The only things I find right now as "bugs" I guess is there is no lens button in more tab. Might be a us problem, but I'm not quite sure how to figure out if it's there or not.
Added newest al-ro build to 3rd post.
I'm curious if you have seen/looked at this before - https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a1/themes/magisk-google-camera-telephoto-lens-t3767531 It's a mod for the Xiomi Mi A1 to be able to use the 2nd rear camera (telephoto) with Google Camera. I haven't tried it yet, kind of afraid to bootloop since it appears specific to the A1 phone. But was curious if what they've done can help get the monochrome camera working on Gcam and other apps in a similar way.
I know you (I think?) had discussed the challenges and limitations of this when asking Essential for support in an AMA in July/August in which Essential basically said "no." But wasn't sure if anything done with the A1 is different than what you've tried.

Do you have a link to al-ro's post on 4pda?

I've tried sooooooo many things, including what they are doing. It doesn't work or help.

I spoke to cstark about this with the Nokia 8 ages ago and the basic idea was that if the secondary camera doesn't show up in camera identifier in the Camera2test app then there's literally no way to make this work.

Thats what ive come across as well. Im just curious though.... How is it hidden from apps like this. I know in build.prop there is a aux cam white list for apps. but ive tried adding all the package names...nothing. What are we missing, how does klik camera turn it on....

Thanks aer0zer0!
This new build from Arnova8G2 seems to fix the crash in slow motion:

It does indeed. Great work @Arnova8G2 !
Finally good slow-mo recordings *with* sound available.
Photobooth still mysteriously crashes when first shot is processing.

I still can't get any of these apps to quick launch from a locked ascreen with the power button shortcut. I'm just getting an error message about permissions. Is anyone else getting this or is it something I have installed that's causing the problem?
I logcatted it. Doesn't tell me much of anything unfortunately. Like what permission it wants perhaps.

Happens on my device too. It actually didn't back when using some of the first Arnova8G2's 6.1.x builds (sorry I can't remember which exact versions).
There is a *partial* solution to launching it from lockscreen - wether it is actually locked or not - by simply having the app in memory.. But that's obviously far from ideal.
Was gonna try to gather some (hopefully) helpful logs but.. :

It's really weird.
Using SystemUI Tuner, I can also confirm the very same thing happens when swiping the corresponding lockscreen shortcut.
(OT : By the way, don't know why they were originally removed since adding back phone & camera shortcuts does make the bottom messages corresponding to the targetted function : "swipe right to make a call" & "swipe left to open camera".. something like that anyways)

I can confirm that Photobooth crashes on my PH-1 too. Can anyone provide a logcat to Arnova8G2?
Thank you for this! Much better than the stock essential phone app. Makes my essential that much better.
Is there a source link to al-ro gcam ports??
