[Gingerbread] Google Talk with Video Chat for Captivate - Captivate General

First of all, I can't take credit for any of this.
I just tried random parts until 2-Way Video Chat started working.
I got all of the info and files from:
[APP][ROOT] Google Talk 1.3 with Video calling, Now wifi optional!
This is tested working with JVH/JVB.
Edited 5/18 -- Simplified install instructions.
1. There are 3 files in this zip, gtalk.video.captivate.zip, which is not CWM flashable.
-Talk.apk is from Android 2.3.4 and is hacked to allow chats over cell data.
-GoogleServicesFramework.apk is from gapps-gb-20110503-signed.zip
-libtalk_jni.so
2. Use Root Explorer to move Talk.apk and GoogleServicesFramework.apk to '/system/app/'
-Rename the old files (ex: Talk.apk.bak)
-Paste in the new ones
-Set permissions of both to rw-r--r--
-NOTE: Replacing the GoogleServicesFramework.apk will force you to sign back in to Google Services
-Some builds don't require this GoogleServicesFramework, but in my testing both JVB & JVH won't work without it
3. Then move libtalk_jni.so to '/system/lib/'
-Rename old file if applicable
-Paste in the new one
-Set permissions to rw-r--r--
4. Reboot
5. Open Talk, click on your username, and check the box for 'Allow video and voice chats'
That's It.
Hopefully a flashable zip coming soon.
Bugs:
Video call only works in landscape. (portrait mode sends a blank screen from phone to pc)
Can only initiate calls from phone.

Lol yea this software unlocks it...
It uses the rear camera (e.g. the only one).

I a. Trying a redoenload of your link where it says 3 files but I only had two files when extracted. Can you double check it for us? If not where/what Google framework file and what CM7 version zip can I pull it from? I would like this to work at some point. Thanks

Hey just double checked it again with Continuum 5.4.1 (JVH Based) and it worked there as well. Zip definitely contains all 3 files maybe try to download it again?

I'll have to try this out

This works on my CM7 captivate. It's cool to at least see video chat with other gtalk users, even though it is a pain that they see what's in front of me and not me.

That was only for the Vibrant. You can retrofit the camera module that comes with the Euro Galaxy S onto it and flash a ROM that supports it and it will work. I remember seeing one of the MobileTechVideos where they did it and he showed you why it wouldn't work on Captivates. Part of the plastic body was in the way or something.

Thanks
Worked great for me thanks!!

would this work on rooted stock 2.2. I followed the steps from OP and once i restarted the phone I cant see Gtalk in my apps list now.

HELL YEA IT DOES, just tested on my Apex 8.2 (JVQ) and it works awesome.
Also i've only tested from phone to comp, no one in my lab has a ffc on their phone but I will be testing it tonight.
One bug is that sometimes the first time i try to call my buddies computer it sends them an error but when I try again it works out!
Nonetheless this is freaking awesome and lospulpo you have my thanks

This is fantastic, running stock MV. Works great as a streaming camcorder so my parents can watch my kids play.
This app bleeds my battery good, but well worth it...guess that's why I have 2 batteries ;-)

Hi .. i was trying this on my captivate apex 8.2 .. i am able to see the other person on phone .. but when i use my phone he is not able to see me.. are there any settings to use the back camera.. i think the app is taking the front camera as default .. since we don't have one.. it must be showing a blank screen..

[ROM-DEV] AOSP 1.6 | no BT

Full ROM here http://depositfiles.com/files/1hu5685tw
Headset fix in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5478361&postcount=333
What works:
Accel/Orientation, Wifi, SMS, Phone, 3G-data, Camera, GPS, MMS send/rcv, Speakerphone, Headset
What doesn't work:
BT, camcorder, SMS on some phones
Unknown:
Wipe recommended if you're coming from other ROMs. Do a nandroid backup. I'm not responsible for anything YOU do.
The SMS problem on some phones, I suspect it is in a place where there is nothing I can do to fix. I suspect it is in the HTC radio interface shared library, which is not open source (libhtc_ril.so). This ROM is using the version of that file from the leaked 2.1 ROM.
This is AOSP, so its up to YOU to take this ROM to where YOU want it to be. Please only post if you have a solution/work-arounds to problems, or if you found a new problem that is within this ROM as-is, and not something extra being put on. Please don't flash this ROM and then come and ask how-to/where-do-I get Gmail/Maps/Goggles/Youtube/wifi-tether/Market, etc.
Thanks!

Safe to assume this is still a .27 kernel?
I spent my morning working on BT. I made some progress in that it now turns on with no error, but it immediately turns back off.
Debug log just shows
Bluetooth state 0 > 1
Bluetooth state 1 > 0
After working with it a bit more my phone stopped booting. Breakfast and coffee time.
Edit: And thanks quiet!!
Is there any way to get mms working or is it a lost cause?
@Chuck -- yep, same old kernel. good thing 1.6 was designed to be used with either .27 or .29 kernel.
@Flipz -- for BT, take a look at how other 1.6 ROMs for HTCs do BT, its usually service in the init.* scripts. I haven't had a chance to look much...
MMS, I don't know really know what the problem is just yet, logcat says something like "service not available, will try again," etc.
Awesome work! I installed AOSP 1.6 last night & it was flying. Tried to install the Google apps, didn't make much head way, but I'm new to the how rooted droid thing so I'm learning.
I definitely will be playing with this ROM every night. (Got to love Nand backups )
sry i didnt read full contents my bad
One thing I noticed was a force close when trying to install the voice synthesis data through the settings screen. Something may be wrong with the PicoTTS.apk file. Either way I am going to try to copy over the tts data from another rom and see what happens.

Settings is trying to find the app in the market.
Get it here

I didn't need to install voice data at all, in fact, when I go into the settings screen for speech synth, it "blinks" for a moment and disables the install voice data option.

That's strange. Well, anyway, copying over the tts folder from another 1.6 rom works perfectly. Anyone have any luck with Google bits? I can get gmail to work but the Market and Talk both crash. I copied them from one of the Dream's 1.6 roms.

Great The only thing I still have to try if video is sent from one Android-Talk App to another... It doesn't work for the desktop at the moment and it doesn't work for the front camera... that's probably why Google just rolled it out for the Nexus S... I hope they'll fix that soon!

I placed said lib in correct-is it replacing something or just drop it in?

Skype, Hacked for Thunderbolt

I tried this out on my phone today, running the CM7 RC1, and it did not work. After entering my credentials for login, the app window minimized, then after several seconds came back up asking for the credentials again. I tried several times, making sure I was entering everything correctly. Oh well, no surprise here, nothing seems to work with this phone.

Vtok, out of the box, does not work at all for me. It gets to the contacts screen and displays all of nothing. As I understand it, those apps all require some sort of package file renaming that I am quickly growing weary of.
I appreciate the info. I'm really looking for a solid phone-to-desktop video chat client that has NOTHING to do with Yahoo--I abandoned them some time ago, and none of my contacts use them, either.
It just feels like the Google and Skype devs don't care whatsoever about our devices. I understand that the Tegra chips are sort of new in the Android world, but it feels like they are just being ignored when it comes to apps that utilize the hardware.

Unless I'm missing something here, the GTalk part of Fring doesn't allow video calls. I am completely not interested in phone-to-phone video calls, as no one I know has a phone with a front-facing camera. I'm looking for phone-to-desktop solutions, and I don't see a desktop Fring client--not that I'd accept that option because Google and Skype are fully capable of video calls. If my contacts have to sign up and install some new service then this is still a failure.

Nope. They don't need file renaming. You just need one file to be put in the framework folder and that's it.
Fyi, more phones and tablets are coming out with tegra 2 chips so what you are saying about "ignore" is a myth.

I take no credit for making it work. I just played with it until I found the right gtalk file. Thanks @xilard

This works. All I had to do was flash with cwm. I have tested it on wifi and 3g (No 4g in my area).
Now to see developers like @kejar31 to add this to there next roms.
So I have noticed 2 things.
1. They can't hear you but you can hear them.
2. After about 30 sec or so it will pause their video and you can unpause it. It wil actually show the || symbol.
Don't have an answer for you as I'm on froyo however I'm sorry about your phone and incident.

Google Talk with Video (Thanks to Paul and BluechipJ)

Hey guys,
Previously I tried installing Google Talk w/ Video on J's CM7 to no avail. However, now that we have the official GB from SE we can now install it and I can confirm that it is working on our X10s. I know there is no front facing camera, but it's still a cool feature to have. This feature is supposed to be only for the 2.3.4 update but it can be yours if you have root. Much thanks to developer (Paul from MoDaco) for creating this installer and BluechipJ for making the youtube installation guide.
More information is in the description on the youtube video.
Shortlink to directly download the installer onto your phone (visit this in the browser, on your phone): http://jp1.ca/googlevideoinstall
Thanks Again Paul from MoDaco and BluechipJ!
NOTE: I've tried a few zips from the below thread for non wifi video function but it didn't work. If anyone is able to get it to work let me know.

(Searched around our forum to see if this was up or not but isn't so I'm posting it, I will delete it if it is a reposted thread)
Does this version only work on WiFi then? Even non-video chat?

Video is wifi only. Everything else works fine.

I get FC when trying to call or start video-chat with someone.
I am on WiFi.
Weird, I wonder why that is. I installed it on both of my X10s. One running rooted stock and the other Wolf's version. Both of them work fine. I noticed that we have to allow video and voice chats once you sign into talk. You probably already did it but for those that haven't yet press your picture icon and then it will go to a update status area and you can click it there.

I like the new UI and I probably wouldn't have used voice or video ever,
but I hate it when something FCs and I don't know why!!!!
Anyway, thanks a lot, good find!
video fc's for me as well on wifi
I've tried voice chat on gtalk with 3G and it works. But I haven't try video chat on 3G yet.
Edit:
I have just tried video chat on 3G. It works for me. I am using Stock GB and talk1.3.nowifi.v2-signed.zip file

@Blisslove - I tried installing that version and for some reason it didn't work. I will try again.
UPDATE: Wolfbreak has implemented the Google Talk w/ Video in his new ROM. Can confirm it is working but I haven't tried it out over 3G yet.

I flashed it via XRecovery. I did mount everything in XR before I flashed it. When you make a video call over 3G, the other side person need to wait for 5 or 10 sec and than click accept.
I think it's depend on the 3G speed sometimes line drops. But I didn't get any FC

I know this is pretty old, but I downloaded and installed the apk. It asked for root privelages and was given them. It removed my previous version of Talk, and that's all it did. It just sites there at the screen with the picture of the guy. I've restarted the phone and even tried it again, but nothing. Now I'm stuck with now google talk at all. I'm rooted on 2.3.3. Any help?
Nevermind. Evidently debugging mode needs to be turned on for it to install properly. Got it now. I wish this had an option just for voice and no video like the ICS version.
