I HAD a fourth row of live tiles... - Microsoft Surface

So, tonight I'm playing a few rounds of Jetpack Joyride...enough to kill off my battery, which BTW gave me no low battery warning...just started shutting down the Surface. That was annoying.
So, I charge it up for 45 minutes or so...then power back on. When I first logged in, I had a fourth row of live tiles! As soon as the screen turned off and I unlocked, I was back to 3 rows.
Has anyone seen this same symptom? How do we get it to stick? I already tried the Layout_MaximumRowCount reg hack which didn't work.

I've seen this also. I posted about it on WPCentral. Pretty sure it's just some kind of bug.

Turn off Fully Charged notification

I hate that notification because I use my phone for my alarm and it lights up in the middle of the night. Has anybody figured out a way to turn that notification off? I have looked and not found anything on the phone or in the forums.
If you can't find a way to suppress the notification, do what I do...turn the phone over. If you don't have the Body Glove case that lifts the screen off the furniture and are concerned about scratches, put it on a paper towel or similar item to protect it. I use a wash cloth.
would also like to know how to turn that stupid notification off - software based and not using a towel though
I don't know much yet but I was digging around in root explorer and if you go to /system/media there are a bunch of .qmg files for battery related stuff, and two of them are named chargingwarning.qmg and Disconnected.qmg. Could one of these be the file for the fully charged notification?

Probably not because the notifications are all text, and QMGs are the 3d files used at boot-up. Most likely those animations are used in the battery meter that is displayed when the phone is off (turn your phone off and plug it in).
This won't help with the light, but the sound can be fixed.

seriously? we are all STILL dealing with this? has anyone found a solution to prevent this notification from popping up?

It is confirmed fix in the 2.2 release - at least the JI6 build we are all playing with. They moved it to the notification bar.
Bumpage!
Been a lurker but just recently got my Captivate. Great forum here! Looking forward to contribute as well.
Well my issue with the "Fully Charged" battery notification is the display will stay on for the entire night. When I wake up in the morning, I see the phone's display on with the notification. Is this normal? I think this was happening just recently but I can't remember. Shouldn't the display turn off after the set amount time of inactivity? Thanks.
Nevermind, I figured it out. Within the development settings, the option to never allow the phone to sleep while plugged into the usb was checked. I wonder why that was checked.

Ok, I THOUGH disabling that option would put the display to sleep when the notification comes on but it doesn't. =(
Is this normal behavior? The screen stays lit after the notification is on? The only reason why i'm concern is if I'm plugging it in night after night and it's on that particular screen for hours at a time, there might be some burn in issues.

Not likely. It's not a rear projection tv or a CRT monitor. Burn-in problems died with those.

Guess you haven't seen some of the demo Captivate at your local AT&T stores. Seeing the burned in images on those beautiful SAMOLED screen just kills a little bit of me.
In any case, so it's normal for the screen to take on after the message notification comes on?

None of the models I saw had burn-in at all. I got my phone on August 30th of this year. The phone had been on the shelves since July. But I would imagine it's normal for the screen to come on.
I got my phone only three weeks ago, so the phone sitting on display has probably been there a long time. And yeah, samoled screen can get burned in. well guess I'll have to charge it during the day time for now until I can figure out a way to disable the pop up.
Oh my worry is that the screen might be in the on state with the same image for hours while I sleep. That's something I can't leave to chance.

As long as you're not using a Samsung Dock or have the Stay Awake option checked off in settings, it won't stay on. I watch my phone every night. It usually finishes charging long before I ever go to sleep (case in point, it's 3:11am, and the phone was done around 1am) and the screen always times out and turns itself off. It doesn't come back on either.

Ok, yeah that's what I figured. Thanks for confirming it for me. I do have that option "not checked". Something might be preventing it to fall back asleep.
Is there any log within the file system which might keep track of system events? I might have to do a little digging around.
Thanks for your input.

I don't believe there's any logs, but you might have some luck installing logcat from the market and checking that after one night

Charged notification PROBLEM SOLVED !
PROBLEM SOLVED ! NO COST !
I saw this suggestion in another forum and it WORKS, so I'm passing it on !
Set the global notifications to SILENT.
Set the notification on Gmail to any ringtone, NOT DEFAULT.
Set the notification on messaging to any ringtone, NOT DEFAULT.
You'll still have a tone when you 1st plug the phone in to the charger, but NO tone when it's fully charged.
Where are these settings? I can't find them any where.

Random Shut Down Issue - Theory: Let's compare apps

Some of us are having problems with our Captivate randomly shutting down. AT&T technical support thinks it could be apps that we've installed. Could they be right? My replacement device didn't start shutting down again after 3-4 days of owning it. By that time, I have already installed some favorite apps. Here's my list. Let's compare and figure this out. It's just a theory. Can't hurt.
<<<< OMG! While typing this new thread to turn on my phone so I can see the list of apps I have installed, MY PHONE TURNED OFF ON ME! WHAT THE...!!! >>> Anyway...
Apps installed:
-SMS Back Up and Restore
-Yahoo! Mail for Android
-Adobe Reader
-XDA-Developers
-Market History Manager
-Speedtest.net
-Google Maps
Mine never did it until I set advanced tag killer to harsh every half hour. I watered down the harshness a little bit and it hasn't shut off since

Thanks. I just posted on an existing thread over there. I will do a hardware master reset later and observe again the next 3-4 days. Samsung gave me the directions. (Hold the volume up and down plus the power button, all 3 buttons for 15 seconds, etc.)
most are saying that its bad RAM/memory and exchanging the handset fixed all the problems

Yeah, that's their answer for all problems, big and small. I'm sure in some cases it's valid, but the reset is used more as a "what the hell' reply rather than a knowledge-based solution.

...which I agree to some point. Some users just end up loading crap on devices which screws things up (some of the apps mentioned above might be crap, or not, not sure, it's only a theory. Of course, a perfect device is a unit that can withstand ANY apps you feed to it. But we don't have THE perfect device (yet, or ever).
I will do the hardware master reset in a few minutes and not load anything for 3-4 days (but I will enter my Gmail account and let it sync with my Contacts, Calendar, and Email, but that's it...for now).

What steers me away from the app theory is that there have been several posts indicating that the random shutdowns have occurred with a stock device. No apps downloaded / installed.
I don't have an answer except to say that the master reset can't hurt. Realistically, though, if you go a few days without a shutdown don't sit back and smile like the Cheshire Cat. Sometimes the shutdowns occur weeks into ownership. I'm not being negative, just realistic.
I wish you well.

Agreed. Like I said, this is my second device and the shutdowns didn't start until 3-4 days after ownership on both devices. The reality (for me) is that the Captivate isn't so great after all after two devices already (sorry to say) but I'm not going to give up just yet. I have until the 31st to decide whether I will continue this 30-day early upgrade trial or take it back and continue to use my HTC Fuze and just let my contract expire (in October). If I take it back, come October, I will decide whether I will stay with AT&T and take on another (hopefully bug-free) Captivate, or move to Verizon and check out their Android phones -- HTC and Motorola devices!
I just did a hardware master reset. It isn't exactly a hardware master reset like the tech guy described it. He gave me the directions to "delete user data". It deleted the apps that I have downloaded from the Market, and other things. I don't know what else. However, when it booted up again, I noticed my settings and widgets are still there. My homescreen was still customized the way I had it. So, it's not a total master reset. The software Factory Reset isn't also a total (software) reset. I did that and found some folders left in my internal memory (not my external MicroSD) from the previous working session. Hmm..
my captivate started to shutdown about five days ago. it's been doing it once a day, always in the morning. i wonder if it has something to do with the power management. the phone is always charged overnight and the shutdowns always seem to happen about an hour or so after i unplug it from the charger.
the one day it didn't shut down, i noticed that the lock screen was unresponsive (ie i couldn't unlock the phone) and i ended up having to power down the phone anyway.

Even after 30 days, you will still be able to return it (maybe to Samsung) for repair or a replacement. Good luck.

Mine has shut down twice, and I've only had it for 12 days. As you described, it happened both times in the morning, following a recharge.
I had to remove and replace the battery to get it to turn back on, is that the same thing that happened to you? I mean to say, did you have to remove and replace the battery to get it to work again?
The two Captivates I've owned (and returned due to a combination of GPS and Random Shut Downs) have shut down on me even in the middle of the day (not only in the morning after recharging for the night). It shut down on me while getting my afternoon coffee. I was showing the phone to the Barista, set the phone down on the counter to pay, picked it up, walked back to my office and just when I'm about to wake it up, it does the bootup. It also shut down on me at night while walking in the dark. I noticed my pocket lit up. I pulled out my phone and I saw the Shut Down screen as if you had pressed and held the power button (but nothing else was in my pocket that could have pressed the button!).
Random, I tell ya. Random.

no, i just turned it back on using the power button.
I just wanted to chime in to say that I am having the same problem. Random shutdowns, not necessarily related to charging. Often they are in the morning however. For me it has been happening a few times a day. Likewise, it seems to have not happened at first, but began a few days ago (I have owned the phone about 2 weeks.)
Are you guys rooted? I have tried unrooting to see if that matters. I don't know why it would, but perhaps...

[Q] Software or hardware issue with Transformer display

Hi all,
Two days ago I received my Transformer, but yesterday when playing with Google Earth, my display turned into (dynamically changing) vertical lines - I call it 'Funky Screen of Death'.
It seems that touch works as input as I'm able to unclock screen when turning display on and slide left/right through screens. See this video I've made:
www(dot)youtube(dot)com/watch?v=LSr2ZpkcvVA
Questions are:
1. has anybody experienced similar issue?
2. do you think this is software (fixable without sending it back to Asus) or hardware problem?
My bet would be: hardware. But maybe someone here knows some magical solution...
Are you rooted? custom ROM'd? Is it fully stock?
If you're within warranty range (or even 30 day range depending on where you bought it from) you can exchange it for another one.
I'm thinking it's hardware. Can you turn the tablet back on? Does it happen in other apps aside from Google Earth?

It is fully stock. No root. No custom ROM. Display has vertical lines all the time if turned on. Even if it's restarting. Lines change based on what's supposed to be displayed.
Bought it in Poland two days ago. I'll call Asus support tomorrow, but as you said this is probably hardware and it needs to be send back.

You could always take it back to the store if it's within it's time frame as well. What revision is your Transformer? You can look by the serial number (bottom of tablet if you haven't removed the sticker) or on the box. It'll start with B40/B50/B60.
I personally have a B50, but I've heard the B60's are more flawless.
That definitely looks like a hardware problem.

I have B6O.
I'll probably contact Asus directly because I would have to send it to the shop via mail (as it is not on-site).
Had the exact same problem today on my TF too. When I switched on the TF, it didn't power up, only started showing this beautiful spectrum of coloured vertical lines and it kept on changing. I tried to power on/off the device by holding the power button for different intervals, but it didn't work. I then connected it to my laptop using the USB charging cable and nothing happened immediately. However as I was going through these forums trying to figure out what was wrong, I glanced back at my TF and there it was powered on with the home screen on.
But I could still observe some faint washed out vertical lines on my black wallpaper. I changed the wallpaper and could still see the same vertical washed out lines on the screen. However after about 10-15 minutes, even those vertical lines are not visible. So it looks fine right now. Though it's still a worrying sign for the future. Again, I wonder if it's a software thing or more worryingly a hardware thing. Mine is B60 as well. Purchased little more than a month ago.

Image burned into screen...

So my Transformer died and I did what we all do and plugged it in. It was in the dock and off but I guess after plugging it in it booted up, which is not a problem. What is the problem is that the screen never turned off and now after an hour and a half of displaying the lockscreen I now see the time and lock ring on darker surfaces. Anyone know if I should RMA or any tips to get this to go away?
Edit / Update: Well I guess I must have jumped the gun as once it warmed up a little bit it would hold images from the last thing I was doing and now it went away completely. Was just a little worried, mods feel free to delete.
Yea they do this sometimes, but after a while of using the screen the images fade to nothing
doesnt seem anything to worry about

I have exactly the same issue. I was typing on whatsapp when suddenly screen get black. Notifications were ok, voice commands too. Touchscreen ok, I could use it normally when using my TV as screen with HDMI cable or with my notebook, when connected to windows or even Dex.
I already flashed fresh stock Android R rom and my display is still dead.
Tried to tap, slap, shake (I can her some noise next to camera module when shaking). I'm draining battery now with some apps that also vibrate phone. Display is still dead.
I live in Manaus/Brazil and repair centers are not working until March 23 because of Sars-CoV2. And my knox is tripped. It would cost a lot If I have to replace display or even the phone, since they probably will say it's no longer covered by warranty.
Were tou opening and closing the camera while mirroring screen? or on blind?
It seems in your case, the display went back to normal as strange as it turned off.
Could you please share the mentioned youtube video?
Hope I have that lucky as well.

Sorry for the late reply mate. The Scenario when display got back alive was.
1. My phone was connected via HDMI to TV in Mirror mode (Not Dex Mode). I also had mouse and a keypad connected since i am using Samsung Dex pad which came with my old note 9
I have from day 1have doubts about the stock camera app on my Note 20 Ultra. The app misbehaved from ranging to camera fail, and force closes on Android 10. That why i did below next
2. I forced close camera app , cleared its data and then while watching on Tv
i placed my finger on Camera icon and repeated opened it and closed it with back key.
since the display on phone was off so i used Tv for help
BUT physically doing the action on phone with fingers not with mouse on screen via mirroring
3. while i was repeatedly opening and closing app by touching the display with finger suddenly i saw camera app asking me for location tags pop up on display and from that time onward there has been no issue and the display is working as nothing wrong happened.
I wish and hope you have resolved issue by now. Please do share your experience for others . since when i had this issue, i found very less information about it. but i saw around 15 to 20 users having such issues especially with Note 20.
Conclusion what i have understood is either its some issue with Note 20 Ultras Camera Firmware or THe Electjet 45W Charger the culprit which i bought for my Tab S7 and was using to also charge my Note 20 Ultra. I have stopped using this charger for my phone and tab and since that day only using 25W OEM charger which came with the phone. I have now this 45w Electjet charger connected via Samsung dexpad which caps its charging speed to 15W.
Here is the link of the video. and i tried all things mentioned and then after exact 24 hours
the display came alive back when doing activities i mentioned above. and i have no link with the guy or channel who posted this video. I was just trying everything to bring life to my dead display .
PS: i had only 5 percent belief in this video . i dont know what worked
i had prepared my mind for the300$ plus panel display replacement.
i just read two recent more comments which state they got their phone working back.

Worked! Slapping it around and massaging it with reboot. Who knew Smack My ***** up! - The Prodigy was referring to modern phone fix'n.
I'm here literally in tears, my keyboard wet typing this because the video actual "Fixed" my phone. I don't know if its a long term fix or just temporary but after 24hrs of a black screen its good to have back a working $1400 phone.
So if this happened to you, dont be skeptical and just try the steps. Last resort is to bring it to a technician or Samsung but definitely try this before.

Okay thanks. Thought I'd tried the slap technic too hard.
Guess I'll keep trying.

No luck as of yet. Been sat for a couple of hours while watching a film trying the foxes above. No luck.

Same. It was off in the morning when I woke up. I been trying all day. The display did turn on twice randomly for few seconds and dead again.

It just came back on this morning. All I did was let the battery fully drain.
