So I bought a Samsung Infuse off Craigslist. I love it, it's awesome. I use the Simple Mobile $60/m plan. I previously had a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant before the Infuse. I used to run CM7 but used Bionix 1.31 as my ROM on my Vibrant. So I'm familiar with the ends and outs of this technology.
The Situation: Samsung Infuse running latest "unofficial build" CM7, flawless performance. After doing much research as to APN settings on Google and XDA I found that the internet is wrong with the APN settings for HSPA+ on a HSPA+ capable phones. I called Simple Mobile yesterday and we did an OTA (she spoke I listened) configuration of the APN and it's full of IP addresses nao. She said that will allow me to access the "4G" network. The thing is, it says "E" for EDGE at the top for my signal....consistently.
The Problem: The EDGE never changes, also according to various speedtest's I can't EVER break .50kbs DL speed off of WiFi.
So I tried switching out various modems that we're available to me for the Infuse via the CWM flashable's. I've seen NO IMPROVEMENT on data speeds after each modem.
So what exactly is the issue: Am I doing something wrong via XDA material? Or am I just ****ed on HSPA+/4G speeds?

You are right and WRONG all at the same time...fascinating isn't it!
Simple Mobile does in FACT use T-Mobile Towers, however; before I rocked the Infuse I've seen other speeds that read 3G/H. The Simple Mobile Network offers 4G/HSPA+ with the $60/m plan that I am currently on.
So with that information, how would you explain that a phone that is HSPA+ capable and programmed correctly that sits on the EDGE network and still doesn't break .50kbs DL speed??
I spoke with customer service at Simple Mobile and several other Simple Mobile retailers that told me up one wall and down the other that the Samsung Infuse programmed correctly should FLY without WiFi, this phone should act like the rocket it claims to be with data on the network.
Instead it is slow, sux and is worthless without WiFi.
So how come you tell me one thing, and several people that work for the Network and people that are affiliated with it tell me another?
Simple because there trying to sell you. Remember its a business?

I own a business; I know about selling. But according to my research, your a little or alot off; I just can't exactly prove it.
I know that AT&T offers 4Gish speeds (true LTE in like 2 cities in TX), and that T-Mobile offers 3.5+G-4Gish speeds.
I also understand the concept of up-selling, however that scenario does not apply with my current plan and situation.
Has it, or has it NOT been documented ANYWHERE that an HSPA+ capable phone on the $60/m Simple Mobile plan achieved true or realistic data DL speeds off WiFi?
I am no tech or anywhere educated in this topic. But why are you comparing network speeds with your wifi? Or am I missing something here?

I'm not using WiFi as a comparison, just as another option for higher DL speeds. Off WiFi I've seen snails crawl faster than my data can move.
I just want to know why I can't get anything better than **** with this great phone and supposedly "reasonably-good" network.

They simply dont know wat they r talking about, they r trained within their own company and dont know that other bands exist and not all 4G r on the same band, same for 3G. So i suggest u sell ur phone and get a tmobile phone or switch to ATT. Next time when u buy a phone, insert ur Sim card in and test the network before u pay

The phone was NETWORK LOCKED when I bought it, so I guess I suppose I'm glad you we'rent with my when I bought it lol.
I'll take into mild consideration that a multitude of people may not be aware of alternate existing networks.
The T-Mobile phone I had before licked ****ing sac, my buddy has a Captivate that OVER-SHINED my Vibrant any day of the week - So No, I won't buy a phone from a company that's supposedly being bought out BY AT&T.
From previous quotes: It seems that we are implying that ONLY a T-MOBILE BRAND PHONE can access the 4Gish HSPA+ speeds that Simple Mobile network (that uses T-Mobile towers) and not an AT&T branded phone.
Yes, it's true....the above DOES in fact sound stupid when I put it on paper. AT&T and T-Mobile use the same towers and Simple Mobile/Metro PCS (some other un-explained networks) use the SAME towers.
So how is it, according to posters: That replacing AT&T phone with T-Mobile garbage will allow me to acquire the DL speeds that reference HSPA+/4G speeds. AND NOT, under any circumstances is it possible for an AT&T phone that uses the same towers to get the same outcome?
OK, the last part really does sound stupid, I feel like I'm arguing with a mockingbird. Anyone else have any further to offer?

Actually I re-read this statement. AT&T don't use the same bands, something about T-Mobile uses 850 and AT&T uses 1700.
Would changing the band selection make a difference? How to if possible?
I think u can only change the APN, not the band, the band is hardware, not software. I had the same problem trying to use my Desire HD on tmobile and couldnt get anything more than edge. I did also ask questions here and all i got is the answer i told u. So sell ur phone asap, dont wait until its price drops more

Will straight talk sim work on not "straight talk phones"?
Which cheapest phone of straight talk I have to buy to get their SIM-card?
I know they selling GSM and CDMA phones and don't want to buy wrong one.
Flat Out answer only the 2G or EDGE bands in the phone are compatible with ATT networks the other bands are different so if you want bettter speeds get att or use wi-fi because edge is all you will ever get no matter what you do to the APN
like on the previous post mentioned, i think most of the att phones doesn't have the radio that is capable of receiving the 3g/4g frequencies tmobile use. i could be wrong, but i think is a hardware problem rather than a setting you can change.

Consumer Cellular is VERY "no-frills" - it's only for VERY light users.
There is no AT&T phone that I know of that supports the 1700 MHz band required for T-Mobile 3G.
The only phone I know of that has pentaband HSPA+ (works on both AT&T and T-Mobile) is the Galaxy Nexus.
When I programmed my HTC Evo 3D i saw various optinos for cdma/eg/4g in CDMA Workshop & QPST Service Programming, what I saw was diferent types of bands and freqz, you might wana check out a phone's specs of tmobile and then check if those specs (frqz & bands) match with the one set on your device...
For example
The Vocoder settings
band prefferences :
band class 0/1/2/3/4/5/ sys a/b/
GSM DSC 1800
GSM extended 900
Etc etc.... check with the device's password on it's profiles and realms (settings I can view on my evo using ##data# )
I can confirm that the issue is with the phones. I just ran a test using my simple mobile card on an AT&T Infuse vs Tmobile Vibrant 4G.
AT&T Infuse
Edge connection with 50kps max
Tmobile Vibrant 4G
3G connection with 240kps max

This Q&A has more to do with the carriers as opposed to the phone. I was with sprint for atleast 8-9 yrs. They recently cancelled my account because of excessive roaming data usage i believe. I miss sprint (unlimited data plans), anyway. I just got the HTC One x and its a great phone, but its not like my previous Evo. Some of the settings I've come to use are gone. Like, does it suppose to be an option to turn the 4g signal off like on the evo or is it just "always on". I dont see any settings for that. Regardless its not an issue since the battery like on the HOX last longer than my evo, but I was just wondering
Another question concerning roaming. Does AT&T allow roaming(stupid question)? My parents stay in the boondocks, and when I visit them, there are times when my phone completely says "No service" I've never seen this before with sprint because the phone would just connect to the Verizon tower(s) nearby. Does at&t allow this? I read in the contract about excessive roaming..but I get great service at my house, just none at theirs. (sprint on the other hand roamed at both places. hence the termination)
Just a couple of carrier related questions i guess because I've only used sprint for the entire span of my cellphone usage, and this is my first time going with a different carrier.
You can't turn LTE off as far as I know, but I think you can turn "4G" somewhere in the setting which will put you on Edge though. Only roaming you need to worry about is if you're leaving the country.
Same as above, you wont be charged for roaming unless going outside of the US. But at&t phones don't roam internationally unless you enable them to through settings, also at&t is a little bit forgiving with roaming I was in US soil in a place with good signal, but my phone decided it wanted to roam an Canada 3g since the area I was in didn't have 3g I ran up $700 bucks in data, it was like two Facebook statuses, lol. But they refunded me since I had agreed to an international data block.

I too just switched from Sprint and an Evo to AT&T and a HOX. My experience has been different, though. I have family in the sticks and Sprint would always cut out. With AT&T I get consistent coverage and with HSPA+ I am getting data speeds 5x what I got before.
But I too wish I could turn off LTE since there's none here. When the kernel source is released this should become available though on custom roms.

When I was on the Nitro, *#*#4636#*#* gets you to where you can click "Phone Information" and towards the bottom you can change the network type. From what I remember it does not persist past reboots.
However, when I try it on the AT&T HOX, I can't get the setting to stick, it just immediately switches back to LTE, so there may not be a way for us to set the phone to HSPA+...

oh ok. For some reason i thought Verizon used gsm frequencies. ugh that sucks. The only carriers in their neck of the woods is US Cellular and Verizon i believe (27970)

Yeah, Verizon/Sprint/US Cellular use CDMA. AT&T uses GSM. incompatible technologies so you can't roam, you'll just have no service
Hey guys I have a question about straight talk service.my question is what is the best option between simple mobile vs straight talk.the thing is where I live T-Mobile service is only edge service so I called straight talk customer service and they told me that they run on T-Mobile and at&t so can I use at&t service on my Samsung galaxy s 4g.(at&t is the best service here now does any one here have straight talk on there phone here that can give me some advice..side note my phone is unlocked

I currently am not on either one of those services. However if I understand correctly about the two services I believes Simple Mobile is the better service when it comes to data usage, however though according to research the two are very similar when it comes to coverage(they both use basically the same towers) the main differences would be data caps. Look into the data caps of both plans, but if what you are saying is true about T-Mobile having only Edge then that shouldn't really matter, go with the one that has the better speed, because if you only get Edge you'll never even get close to the data cap anyways.
I've even read things that say Straight Talk now owns Simple Mobile. How true that is I don't really know, do some research for yourself and make the best decision from your budget and your area, even if I had one of those plans my experience would most likely be very different than any experiences you will have because of the areas we live in. Try talking to people in your area that have one of the two, they would know a lot more about the service, speed, and coverage than anyone that doesn't live near you.
That's just my advice...

The biggest issue is Straight Talk has a invisible DAILY data cap. And they dont just shut off the data they turn off the service completely. Ive been told to order the T-Mo sim from them not the att so you dont hit the daily cap.

I would use a data monitor for a couple weeks get a idea of how much data you use per day. Then decide if it is worth having to ***** at ST to get your account turned back on if you go over.

The SGS4G has a 1900 MHz UMTS modem, so you should be able to get at least 3G from the AT&T network (unless you live in one of their 850 MHz areas).

I just switched from T-mobile to Straight talk due to the same reason as stated in the OP. The T-mobile coverage was bad in my office building and AT&T penetration in buildings is always claimed to be better. I unlocked my Galaxy S 4g using the helpful posts from here and ordered the Straight talk AT&T card. I can confirm that I do see 3G showing on my phone and the speed was great when it was 3G. But, its not always 3G, I do get in the Edge areas too often too. I am very happy because my voice coverage has improved leaps and bounds after switching.
I have read about the scary part where Straight talk cancels service if we go over some hidden limits. So to be safe, I ported my number over to Google voice and use that to make a call. This way, I can switch between phone providers easily without any porting issues. But, not sure if Google voice will remain free after the end of the year.

Thank you guys all here for your responds I will try straight talk next month when my service is about to end with simple mobile.I don't have nothing to lose but the 12 dollar for:thumb ST sim card and 5 dollars extra ST service vs my 40 dollar simple mobile service :thumbup:

Samsung doesn't advertise the 1900 MHz UMTS band for the phone, but it's there. I often swap out the SIM on my phone with my work iPhone, and the 3G works just fine.

Basic question is this - can I use the galaxy s3 I have currently with Verizon on straight talk?
I am getting mixed answers on it and I figured you guys would probably know best.

You will definitely have to be rooted. I don't know why you would want straight talk. The service is spotty around east Tennessee. I don't remember a guide on how to flash straight talk however.

I'm in Kingsport, TN as well and I'm also a Verizon customer using the S3 and you'd be a fool to switch from vzw over to straight talk. I've had straight talk, and while it's "alright," it's definitely nowhere near as good of reception in this area as verizon. Verizon may be a little more expensive, but it's well worth it in the long run. When you take your straight talk phone into the mall or wal-mart and you're lucky to have service while standing next to the glass at the entrance door, you'll thank me when you came to your senses and remain under contract with verizon. To each their own though.
Yea im in bristol and i have a friend with ST and it sucks. I would stick to Verizon i hate saying that because they cost so much but really they cover the Tricitys better then anyone.

Just waiting on my cell number to be ported from Verizon to the straight talk phone and then i will flash whatever phone i chose to buy and replace the ESN. You have to realize their are two different networks you choose from when you go straight talk. GSM(ATT) or CDMA(Verizon). These guys who are bashing straight talk are comparing their Verizon phone coverage with a Straight Talk GSM phone running on ATT towers. Also you cant compare reception of different phones sometimes even if they are on the same towers sometimes bc certain phones are known to have bad reception period. Dont listen to them. You can switch just make sure your donor phone is using Verizon towers. You can look up the model number of the donor phone or make sure it doesnot have a sim card. Sim card phones will be GSM(ATT) and their coverage does suck in rural America. Im in Louisiana and you cant get much more rural. My current Verizon phone and Straight talk have the same number of bars bc they are both CDMA. I have an old HTC Thunderbolt that is just as fast as an iphone 4 bc i have tweaked the hell out of it and use Liquid Smooth Roms which are faster and more stable than even the Pure Google experience. Your first post and you chime in about an area you don't live in. I know how straight talk works. I know certain phones use gsm and some use cdma. I can't believe you just compared a thunderbolt to an iPhone. I hope you do switch her off Verizon to straight talk. That way when she complains about slower data you can come back on the forum and try to figure it out.

Dude you need to chill out. Just because someone may know more that you on a topic dont get your pride hurt. Again I have a straight talk phone and a Galaxy S3 on verizon. The reception is the same. My straight talk phone is on the verizon network. With that being said. How could my reception be bad when compared to my wifes verizon phone if we are on the same towers. DUH!!!!!! I have been using straight talk for 3 months and laughing at ever person with a ATT, Tmobile or Sprint phone. I have better reception as long as i have a straight talk phone made for Verizons network. Which is the most reliable network period.
Whether I live in your area or not is completely irrelevant. If Verizon works best for you. Fine. If Att is best in your area. Fine. Just make sure your phone is on the right network when you go Straight Talk.
As for whoever says Im wrong bc you may have a problem with your EGO. LOL Keep paying double for the same service, coverage, and RECEPTION. Common sense is hard to come by for those who you cant tell anything. LOL
As far as comparing a Thunderbolt to an Iphone 4. This takes someone who knows how to root, jailbreak use custom roms, overclock and get the most stable software available for a phone. I am crazy for comparing a Iphone 4 to MY Thunderbolt bc my phone out performs every stock iphone 4 period. Iphone people are brainwashed. My son has a Iphone 4s and now he hates it and wants a galaxy bc he sees the things a Android is capable of and Iphones are not. An iphone is a limited experience. Had two and sold them.

Any Straight Talk phone on Verizon network has identical coverage as a Verizon phone. The straight talk phones using Verizon towers have a model number that begins with a "C" You have to do your homework first on which phone you are going to purchase so that you know what network you will be using. You can go with any towers you want. Sprint, ATT, Verizon. Etc....The experience was bad bc you switched your network when you went Straight talk. Dont switch towers and keep your money in your pocket.
My advice is to get a Straight Talk phone on Verizon network and keep your money in your pocket.

As far as comparing a Thunderbolt to an Iphone 4. This takes someone who knows how to root, jailbreak use custom roms, overclock and get the most stable software available for a phone. I see you said you're using an HTC Thunderbolt on Straight Talk if I'm reading that correctly. Would you mind explaining exactly how you did that? I'm looking to do the same thing. I've seen a few things about getting an existing CDMA (donor) phone from Straight talk and modifying the MEID, but I've seen a few other things that say that they catch on and boot you from the network. I'm looking to do this for a friend so I don't want them to waste the money setting it up if they're only going to be kicked not long after doing it. Thanks in advance for any advice in this situation.

Was you successful at making your wife's Verizon S3 work with straight talk?
I broke my current phone "optimus zone" and i am looking for a new phone so i decided to get the galaxy s3 well im on verizon prepaid so i need a galaxy s3 that will work on prepaid verizonm and i need it to be rooted so i can use as a hotspot. i did some research and found that the i535 can be flashed to verizon prepaid "I Think" and it can also be rooted.
so i did some looking on ebay and found 3 things
1 i535 verizon unlocked - i looked at what a unlocked phone was and found out it just means it can be used with any compatable service provider. Can this be used with verizon and if so how?
2 i535 verizon - If i got this one can it be flashed to verizon prepaid? Can it get 4g on prepaid?
3 i710 sprint - i already ordered a sprint flashed to verizon prepaid one and found out u needed add on apps to use the sms and it cant get 4g so im woundering , if the' i535 verizon would be a better choice. i would have to learn to flash but thats no big deal.. i havent recieved the one i ordered yet but when i do i think im going to return it...
I have looked all over and can not figure out if the verizon i535 will get 4g after its flashed to verizon prepaid and i havent found out 100% that it can be flashed to verizon prepaid. Im posative it can be rooted i think lol. Or can i buy a unlocked i535 and use it on verizon prepaid somehow, easier than learning to flash???

I can't get survice with anyone but verizon i dout page will work in my area. And I'm not really really consurned about 4g i just hate to have a sprint phone that only gets 3g if the same phone on another carrier can get 4g... but i just need to know yes pr no can the i535 be flashed to prepaid verizon?? And if it can it be used on 4g or only 3g like the sprint one after flash... i live in a rural area and i bairley get signal as it is... i hear that this page plus provider uses verizon towers.. i don't understand does that mean it will get the exact same signal as verizon prepaid cuz that's thr ONLY provider i can use.. pleas let me knoq if the i535 can be flashed to prepaid verizon and can it get 4g yes or no please let me know I'm without a phone and really need to know what to do... i feel like i made a mistake buying the sprint one...

If they're truly Verizon towers I'd say page plus should work fine. I was told however by a guy with a local shop (I live in the boonies), that because we have so many towers around here that are owned by a regional carrier appalacian wireless that have an agreement with Big Red, that page plus would Roam more whereas Selectel wouldn't. Now, I don't know if the guy was telling the truth or not. I do know from Selectel's website that if you sign someone up to selectel and that person continues to use Selectel and re-ups through the website or whereever, the original person who signed you up gets a cut of the profits. Page Plus may not offer such a deal, so I don't actually know 100% either way. I'm looking to find something cheaper than Big Red myself. I have two phones with them at the moment with a bill of 105.00 or 107.00 but with only 250Mb of data and 1GB free for a year. I can get by with little to no data, I really don't use much, but I'd like to have it available should I need to go out of town and use the internet or use navigation which I suspect would drink the data. I know you can pre download maps with many apps these days though.
Let me know what you find out. I have the Verizon sch-i535 sgs3 with a broken power button but otherwise it's a good phone. Still does what I need it to, and development hasn't stopped yet, it's still going pretty strong on the aosp side..
Edit: I recently had my phone flashed to selectel wireless. If you have a cdma phone you can do the activation from their website. However, I think it must be a phone without a sim such as a DX or DX2. a cdma only phone. I had to take my s3 to a local selectel dealer who did the flash and got me on selectel. I went with selectel because it will roam on the regional towers in my area albiet voice and texting only not data. So, when roaming I won't have data. Pageplus from what I've read on both their site and another forum will roam but they will charge you quite a bit to do so. If you don't have the issue of roaming like I do and are near verizon towers all the time, I'd probably go with another MVNO.
I tried tracfone BYOP with my DX2 and spent a small fortune in service and gas going from here to there trying to get it activated. First they said to go to a town about 25min away from home. I did this and no dice. I called them twice using a wifi app (hangouts) and spent about 4 hours in this town trying to get the activation to work to no avail. I called again from home and was told to go to another town about an hour away. The next day I did just that. They had me dial *22891 *22801 this time activation went smooth and I was able to use data and make and receive calls perfectly. If I had known this in the closer town it would have worked there but the rep never told me that. To top things off when I got home I had no service at all. Zip None. When I called I was told that a BYOP android phone would not roam on the regional towers although a feature phone would. I was also told incorrectly I believe that if I had purchased an android tracfone from a local store that it would roam. This too from what I've read is incorrect. No android tracfone will roam on regional towers, they will only work on genuine verizon towers. I was hoping to purchase the moto e from ebay with a 400min card which tripled to 1200 min for 99 bucks. This would have been a great deal since the 400 min card alone is around 90. I never did find out the entire truth about roaming with tracfone android phones. But from what I read on the other forum and another site dedicated to tracfones, that they would not roam period. What a freaking ripoff. The same goes for a lot of other MVNO's they simply won't roam. Even Verizon perpaid phones won't work on any towers other than verizon. Again, this came from someone who supposedly had experience with this.
The bottom line is beware of MVNO's if you require roaming. Straight talk may or may not work I do not know if they roam or not. But either way selectel was cheaper. Granted it sucks that I can't get data when roaming but at least I can make and receive calls and texts. At least SMS. I haven't tried MMS and I'm guessing it won't work due to it requiring data. Remember your results may vary and I'd certainly like to hear from others who use a MVNO that is Verizon based. Or even MVNO that is ATT based ATT's coverage map says there's coverage in my area, and i know there is across the stateline where I live. A friend used to have an ATT phone a few years back and he had zero service when he crossed the line by about a half a mile, probably out of range of the ATT tower. He now has NET10 using ATT and has the same coverage.
