This Q&A has more to do with the carriers as opposed to the phone. I was with sprint for atleast 8-9 yrs. They recently cancelled my account because of excessive roaming data usage i believe. I miss sprint (unlimited data plans), anyway. I just got the HTC One x and its a great phone, but its not like my previous Evo. Some of the settings I've come to use are gone. Like, does it suppose to be an option to turn the 4g signal off like on the evo or is it just "always on". I dont see any settings for that. Regardless its not an issue since the battery like on the HOX last longer than my evo, but I was just wondering
Another question concerning roaming. Does AT&T allow roaming(stupid question)? My parents stay in the boondocks, and when I visit them, there are times when my phone completely says "No service" I've never seen this before with sprint because the phone would just connect to the Verizon tower(s) nearby. Does at&t allow this? I read in the contract about excessive roaming..but I get great service at my house, just none at theirs. (sprint on the other hand roamed at both places. hence the termination)
Just a couple of carrier related questions i guess because I've only used sprint for the entire span of my cellphone usage, and this is my first time going with a different carrier.
You can't turn LTE off as far as I know, but I think you can turn "4G" somewhere in the setting which will put you on Edge though. Only roaming you need to worry about is if you're leaving the country.
Same as above, you wont be charged for roaming unless going outside of the US. But at&t phones don't roam internationally unless you enable them to through settings, also at&t is a little bit forgiving with roaming I was in US soil in a place with good signal, but my phone decided it wanted to roam an Canada 3g since the area I was in didn't have 3g I ran up $700 bucks in data, it was like two Facebook statuses, lol. But they refunded me since I had agreed to an international data block.

I too just switched from Sprint and an Evo to AT&T and a HOX. My experience has been different, though. I have family in the sticks and Sprint would always cut out. With AT&T I get consistent coverage and with HSPA+ I am getting data speeds 5x what I got before.
But I too wish I could turn off LTE since there's none here. When the kernel source is released this should become available though on custom roms.
ok i understand now about the 4g..but if at&t allows roaming, why did my phone show "no service" is there an option i need to untick/tick to enable it. Im pretty sure i clicked "data roaming" under network settings.
When I was on the Nitro, *#*#4636#*#* gets you to where you can click "Phone Information" and towards the bottom you can change the network type. From what I remember it does not persist past reboots.
However, when I try it on the AT&T HOX, I can't get the setting to stick, it just immediately switches back to LTE, so there may not be a way for us to set the phone to HSPA+...

Yeah, Verizon/Sprint/US Cellular use CDMA. AT&T uses GSM. incompatible technologies so you can't roam, you'll just have no service

So, I just got done chatting with AT&T customer service, via online chat, and I was asking questions about the phone constantly switching between HSDPA, and UMTS. I asked if this was normal, and she said mentioned that it is as they are upgrading the networks. She asked me for my zip, and did a check and said that they are currently working on upgrading in the area (Manhattan). She also did say that this phone will be able to connect to the LTE network when that is rolled out later this year (though from the sounds of it on this forum, that is highly unlikely).
Then, I asked about the SIM card. I mentioned I came from the Samsung Captivate, and that my SIM card says 3G on it. I said is this affecting my phone and contributing to my phone spending more time on UMTS than HSDPA? And her response was...
"Yes, you will need a new SIM card. If you can give me your address, I will be able to find a location in your area that can give you one free of charge."
I'm going into the store tomorrow to pick one up. Hell, why not?! Free and new is always good. Doubt it is the SIM, though it could help in the long run.
Thoughts?
AT&T needs to train their CSR staff. This phone won't do LTE and the 4g card won't make any difference.

Well, I had the "captivate->inspire no mobile data" thing happen a couple of days ago, went to the store, dude did some stuff on the computer, didn't work, and the only thing left to do was to change the SIM card (from 3g to the new one), which worked.
So the moral of the story is you're better off having them give you a new sim, even if the old one still looks like it's working, even partially, as was the case for me.

This is all good info. Thanks all for sharing. I'd be curious to hear others experiences after using a newer SIM card.
When I got the phone a day early, the guy had problems registering the new sim so I'm just using my old 3G card. Runs fine, maybe slower without the build.prop edit but it doesn't matter much where I live. Do what works for you.

3G??
I just recently switched from a captivate to inspire at an ATT store. The salesman put in a new sim card in the inspire instead of putting my captivate sim card in. When I asked why, whether this is true or not and I question too, he told me that in order to get 4g connection, I need a new sim. He deactivated my old sim and told me to shred it. When I got home, I placed my old sim back in and sure enough it was deactivated. I then placed my new "4g sim in my captivate and it worked. " I would like to know if a deactivated sim can be reactivated before I dispose if it.

He was wrong about "needing a 4G SIM", but you can't reactivate a deprovisioned SIM.
Gotcha. That sux. I also asked the salesman if the inspire would connect to the LTE network when it rolls out and he said yes. Imo, if ATT current lineup of 4g phones won't connect to LTE, that is a class action lawsuit waiting to happen. ATT can't afford anymore negative publicity of these proportions. We can speculate, but in the end, we won't actually know until LTE goes live.

From what I've read the networks are backward compatible to provide a seamless transition between networks, but a special chipset is still needed to connect to LTE, which as far as I know the Inspire doesn't have

well we know for a fact the inspire does not have an LTE radio, so that issue is for sure a "no". i really dont see much to back up a lawsuit though...
I think the key to your response is the statement "no current AT&T phones will ever be able to connect to the LTE network". I believe this was carefully and specifically worded, which leaves the techs in the store correct but misrepresenting what will happen. The phones will connect to the LTE towers because they will be the same towers as the 3G towers, but they will only connect as 3G devices with HSPA+ which means they could be capable of 4G speeds on these upgraded towers. It is true that they will not connect to the LTE network itself which I don't believe is really saying much. I doubt ATT is running multiple separate receivers on each tower for all their different network types. I would have to believe they are buying equipment that is capable of supporting their legacy phones while bringing new features in.
It still comes down to the same thing, if you were expecting an LTE feature on this phone in the future, you bought the wrong device. There is a reason the Thunderbolt is more expensive than the Evo and Inspire, it has an LTE chipset in it. Beyond that fact there really isn't a major difference between this phone and the Thunderbolt.
Just walked out of the store with a new "4G" SIM card. Yeah, from the sounds of it, especially after reading the comments here, all this SIM card is, is a re-branded one of the 3G card.
The only people that have told me this phone will not be able to access the LTE network are here on the forum. Thus, I trust this forum and the people here far more than any person at AT&T. Nevertheless, they absolutely need to differentiate between LTE and HSPA+. This is a fact: Every single person I have spoken to at a AT&T store in Manhattan, including the regional manager (whom set me up with this phone, for free, after my complaint about my previous phone to the CEO of AT&T wireless) has mentioned and specifically stated this phone will be able to access the LTE network.
It does not bother me one bit that I will in fact not be able to access the LTE network with this phone. No. I'm perfectly happy with the speeds now, and that I can access HSPA fine here in the city (when I am connected to HSPA, that is). In any case, by the time LTE is accessible to the masses, we'll be able to upgrade our phones. It will be quite sometime before most folks will ever be downloading with the speeds of LTE.
The real issue at hand now is being able to get the full upload/download speeds of HSPA as it still seems to be capped! One step at a time I guess. HSPA is available, I can access it fully throughout the city, however my upload speeds are still capped. This is the first hurdle to clear before going on to the next - LTE.
So is this Verizon's first phone where data service stays active while on the phone? Or is this a feature that comes with hotspot?
Thunderbolt - BAMF Remix 1.5
First VZW phone that does it.
The chip they used for the CDMA radio is the first ever to allow voice and data at the same time over CDMA. Also, if you're in a 4G area, it works by keeping voice on CDMA, and of course using LTE for data.
Really? I would browse to google documents all the time while having someone on speakerphone so I could take notes...

I have used it for a week, and I can tell you this: You CAN do that talk and browse the web thing at the same time on 4G AND 3G. I did it many times, and no problems. No need to jump on wifi or anything.
Shocked the hell out of one of my co-workers today doing this, since he was a die-hard AT&T fanboy and always tried to throw that up in my face, lol.
He went on to accuse me of secretly using WiFi or that it was a fake Verizon case or something.
Yeah when i read that on their website under the features I was completely sure that it would be Simultaneous voice + data ONLY in a LTE area (Like the HTC EVO and WiMax), but i was incorrect.
You can use Voice + Data while under 3G or 4G, but only if you are in an eHRPD area. (Settings > About > Network > Mobile Network Type) If it shows CDMA EVDO rev a or 1xRTT or whatever, you may not Call and use Data.
EDIT: Also, from what is available on the Net about eHRPD, this is the 'transition' between CDMA/EVDO and LTE.... It would be my guess that this means that anywhere eHRPD is available.... they should expect LTE in 2011. Just my two cents...

Hmmm.. I have been wondering why Verizon isnt using this feature to silence ATT fanboys, but I guess not everywhere with 3G supports it, so they dont want to really advertise the feature if it doesnt work everywhere.
They are most likely trying to perfect their system, as there are probably bugs (not that have seen) they would like to squash out - before going out to squash at&t.
Although i do laugh when i see that at&t commercial now....

Probably cuz the iPhone doesn't use it yet?. I have only seen iphones on those att commercials doing the talk and browse thing.
I talked to a Verizon rep and asked them why all their phones didn't do this, they said something along the lines of because they wanted to keep calls on a seperate networks that way it can help stablize and keep from getting dropped calls.. Not sure how accurate that is.. I would think if they are on seperate networks then they could both be utilized..
Tbolt has two radios in it. One for voice/sms and slow data, the other for 3g/4g. That is why you can browse and talk at the same time (as long as you're in 3G or LTE area).
I will be travelling to Europe in the next few weeks, and have some questions about using my inspire.
I have already unlocked my phone by calling AT&T and getting the code, then inserting another SIM, and entering the code. So I am good to go in that regard.
When I get to Europe, I just buy a SIM card and put it in the phone, which will allow me to make calls. What about overseas calls?
What about data? Do the SIM cards allow you to access data? Will I get 4G, or be restricted to Edge?
Honestly, I am more interested in Data than voice, as I am more likely to send/receive e-mails that call.
Would I be better off signing up temporarility with one of the AT&T international plans?
Thanks!

Indeed. Especially if it needs to boost the radio for reception. I was camping a few months back on the fringe of coverage area. The first day, I left mobile networks on and it kept going in and out of coverage and my battery was dead within about 14 hours. The next day, with a fresh charge from my car, I turned off mobile networks and I still had 80% battery by the end of the day.
I currently have an unlimited data plan called Connect Pack 1 from my Alltel plan that transitioned over onto the Aria that I was given as a replacement for the Moto Q that I was using.
Anyway, when I got the Skyrocket, they tried to make me transition to an ATT data plan, but I wouldn't go for it. I bought the phone outright, expecting to at least get the 3g working, but they said they couldn't.
I used the apn settings from the aria, and I do get 4G but for whatever reason, the
LTE icon isn't showing up in the notification area. I live in Houston, and we are supposedly one of the area's with it.
The settings I used are the wap.cingular settings that I see are listed elsewhere on here. Is there something additional I need to do to get the LTE to work.
Will the phone look like an Aria to ATT or am I going to be getting a notice to upgrade my account shortly?
Thanks
You need an LTE sim and the LTE plan to be able to access the new network. Maybe see if they can change your sim and plan?
Thanks for the prompt reply
I don't want to change the plan. Right now my data plan is cheap, and I want to keep it that way.
If I get a new sim, is there a chance that the LTE will work using the settings listed on wap.cingular? If it does work, how long before you think I would start getting some notices about it from ATT?

hope you hear something positive. The Cingular settings give me stable 4G which is actually better than I expected after my discussion with the att store about getting the phone. All they seemed to be interested in was getting me to sign an att 2year contract (haven't been under contract for years) and transition to a limited data plan. Not what I wanted so I just bought the phone off craigslist and entered the apn settings myself.
All I am truly worried about is if they update the data plan themselves if they notice the 4G phone on a 3G plan. I'm hoping since my original phone and the skyrocket are both android it won't raise any flags. I would love LTE but I am pretty happy with hspa+ for now.

LTE uses the new pta APN.
Runs through proxy.mobile.att.net
I was at the AT&T store playing with the One X yesterday. I had read the complaints about not being able to turn LTE off, mainly centered around battery concerns. Well, I think there is a much bigger concern.
AT&T's LTE network is obviously spotty in most places. It's supposedly pretty robust here in the DC area. Well, the phone I was playing with was constantly switching between LTE and HSPA. And guess what? Every time it switched, it lost its data connection for a good 30+ seconds. So since it was switching back and forth constantly, it would lose data connection for several minutes at a time before it would finally stabilize on either LTE or HSPA for a few minutes. Then it would start switching back and forth again, thereby losing data yet again.
It took me about 10 minutes just to download the SpeedTest app from the market. And then, I could not even get a single speedtest to complete running because it never stabilized on a connection for long enough to complete the test. Web pages wouldn't load. Youtube wouldn't load. Basically rendered the phone useless.
So yeah, battery concerns are there, but they are minor compared to this. If you are in an area with weak LTE, but you do not have the ability to turn LTE off, you might essentially find yourself with no data connection whatsoever as your phone bounces back and forth between LTE and HSPA. I imagine that would be a deal breaker for most people.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my house and my office both get either strong enough LTE signals to avoid this, or, alternatively, that they get no LTE signal at all so that it just stays on HSPA.
Battery concerns aside, this is why AT&T needs to give us the option to turn LTE off.
No LTE in my area for a while, which is strange because I live near two big cities and neither of them have LTE yet, for that matter no city in TN has LTE yet
I believe you can technically turn the lte off by selecting "hspa only" in mobile network settings.

From what I've read, you can do this on the Rogers version, but not on the AT&T one.
In the future I can almost guarantee that there will be an option to turn it off and on as you wish. Most likely will require root but, if you aren't going to root it what are you doing here anyways haha
Well for what its worth, A quick flash of a rogers ROM and we are good to go ;-). Not that we should have to, but we shouldn't be kept from doing as we wish with out device. I am sure I will be flashing within the first hour of a released ROM.
Nope they disable it on all their phones. They don't want the customer selecting their network. They can charge more for data on LTE as its faster and you'll use more quickly.
They also don't want us to be able to force EDGE. Totally ridiculous.
I'm referring to the settings under mobile networks

They also don't want us to be able to force EDGE. Totally ridiculous.

I might be misremembering an old article, but from what I've read, they're actually starting to repurpose/shut down EDGE towers in cities with a lot of 3G/4G coverage. A good reason to keep us from selecting EDGE only.
I just want them to turn on LTE in Philly.
If the next iPhone (which will have LTE I believe) didn't have a feature where you can disable LTE, then people would go crazy. It's really a shame that the Rogers model allows you to do so but the AT&T model does not. It's not a big deal to me, but certainly I think the consumer should always have that option.
I am one of the lucky ones to still have unlimited on AT&T but there can't be that many of us left where it would affect things.
Pick up an AT&T iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 and you have an option to turn off 3G. And yes people would go nuts if the next iPhone didn't have an option to turn off LTE.
I hope they don't do away with EDGE. First thing I'd say is, why at home do I get 3 bars of 3G and then if I can switch to EDGE I get a full signal? Call quality isn't broken up like it is on 3G. I'd also like the option to switch my device to EDGE while I'm at work all day to save battery life. EDGE serves a very good purpose for me still.
I think more people need to start calling AT&T technical support and complaining about this. I guess its possible the next update could have this feature.
What good is LTE when its draining my phone sitting in a desk drawer all day?
I remember reading that by "getting rid of EDGE" ATT is actually upgrading those towers to 3G. So, yeah, you lose EDGE, but it gets replaced by better 3G coverage.
Although I entirely agree that not being able to toggle LTE is rediculous.

I'll just leave this here...
Just because Verizon rushed out LTE phones before the tech was ready which resulted in terrible battery life, doesn't mean AT&T did the same thing.

Is that even possible? I thought EDGE is still used for voice, and the reason that we can browse and use voice at the same time (like AT&T always advertises). I'm no expert by any means. But I don't think they can get rid of the EDGE towers, until they do something like move completely to 3G for voice, and LTE for all data (which obviously would not happen for a long time).

If spotty LTE coverage indeed proves to be a problem on the One X, you can try manually enter a new APN to force the phone to HSPA+. I read it worked on the Vivid.

Did you even read the original post? It really had nothing to do with battery life, which is a minor concern compared to what I described.

Only a solution if you have WiFi access. This would have no impact on the situation the OP is talking about: spotty LTE coverage causing data connection to be dropped.
Also defeats the purpose of having an LTE phone.

Both GSM and UMTS support circuit switched voice calls. Only LTE does not, as there is not yet a standard defined for voice over LTE...so as long as there is a 2G or 3G network for circuit switched fallback, it will work.
Data is independent of voice in all GSM derived networks, unlike CDMA.
Your data connection does not reflect call quality.

You know, the current iPhone doesn't give you an option to force EDGE

No, but why do the 3GS and 4 allow it?
