[Q] Recovery of files - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a Nexus S model GT-I9023 which is broken and now Im trying to recover some photos. I searched for a whole lot of guides and I think Im doing it right but can't get it to work.
I acidentally dropped it into a bucket of water, I let it dry and the next day it worked and on for about a week. Then it suddenly stopped working and I couldn't boot my phone, it wouldn't go pass the startup text "Google" and the lock icon.
I have the android SDK installed including the Google USB drivers. I added the PATH to tools and platform-tools. In the terminal i type "cd C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\tools" and hit enter and afterwards type "adb devices". It starts the daemon up etc. but does not list any device.
Note: since I cannot boot up the phone and enable usb debuggin I boot the phone up in recovery mode which I think should work and is the same as enabling USB debuggin, if Im not wrong.
I suspect that maybe it's because of the recovery mode or because some drivers. I don't think my computer recognize the devices regularly but Im not sure what it really is.
Any help would be appreciated

You don't need to boot in recovery, boot in bootloader only.

I think I might have confused the terms bootloader and recovery mode, what I meant was I press the vol up button and the power button at the same time which then opens the bootloader I guess? anyways, still the same issue for me.

Yes that's the bootloader.
Have you installed the ADB drivers? You don't need only the adb and fastboot executable, but also the drivers.
Under Windows, you can install the PDANet software which makes driver installation a breeze on most cases.

Can you boot into "recovery" and mount the sd from there?

If you can get to bootloader you should be able to get into recovery. And from there you should be able to mount your sd.

I tried but I dont think I can, when I try it just goes into that 'bootup screen, with the Google text and lock icon'. :/ Not sure what to do

Im still stuck and havent been able to get around this, any helpful information is appreciated. Thanks in advance

Hey guys, Im still stuck with this issue. Anyone who has some tips on what to do or has an idea of what it could be? I just formatted my PC yesterday Windows 7 32bit and everything should be up to date.
Kind regards,
baha

If there's anyone out there I would greatly appreciate your help! I have some pictures that are very valuable to me (pictures of my dog) and would really love to see if I could recover them.
I cannot start up my phone the "normal" way, I can only start up the Fastboot mode. I have the Samsung phone drivers installed along with the Google USB drivers. I have attached a picture that shows that there should be no problems with the drivers. I have tried to use the google usb drivers specifically but still the same. I have also attached a picture of the command prompt and as you can see nothing really happens. I have tried different tutorials and all kinds of ways trying to make it work but I have no clue what the problem is since I am not getting any other error message.
Any help is appreciated, please!
I typed fastboot devices in the cmd prompt and it actually listed a device serial number which matches then one stated on my phone in the fastbootmode. Any idea what to do or what this means?

i rooted my phone using what i thought was the right img file, but i can only assume it was the wrong file as i can now do nothing, i can boot into the Moto symbol, i can get to the droid with the warning triangle and into the fastboot section but i can no longer detect it when connected to the usb...

Try reflashing it with my tool, using unbrick feature, maybe you need fastboot drivers, just download it from sdk

If you can boot, you are not bricked - just start over with the root process using the correct image.

Try a diff USB cable - download drivers from MOTOROLA website get this file - MotoHelper_2.1.32_Driver_5.4.0.exe
Okay here we go....
first thing let your xoom stuck on M logo.
Then hold power+volume up.
while power up press volume down to get firstboot.(make sure your PC and xoom know each other.)
You will see some text firstboot bla bla bla on left, top of screen.
Second thing open window cmd.exe
then type ...
cd /AndroidSDK/tools (where ever your adb.exe is located)
fastboot flash boot boot.img (the right boot image)
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot
wait for reboot. You should see splash screen and you smile on your face.

Glad you got it going!
Had a similar problem where I had a boot loop and adb didn't recognise my device, but I could still put it into fastboot or recovery with power + vol down.
What I did was boot the Xoom so that it was stuck at the Moto logo, connected to the PC and queued up the fastboot command (fastboot flash boot boot.img) so the command window said "Waiting for device...", then reset the Xoom and manually put it into fastboot again at which point it picked up the queued command and started flashing.

Softbrick? some custom rom advice please

Hello everyone,
I have done something utterly stupid with my Nexus 5, I wiped the internal storage and lost my roms, I really wasnt thinking.
I have tried looking at options like adb sideload but cant find a decent tutorial
Could I just get a micro usb to usb adapter and install a rom off that?
Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction with adb sideload?
Other problems are I can't get on the android SDK because the CMD box only flashes up.
Does the adb sideload option in TWRP actually do anything if you wait for it? Its been waiting for about 1 hour now and nothings happening.
Please guys any help is appreciated

Why don't you flash the factory image using fastboot?
The Cmd box you are referring to happens because you need to navigate to that directory using Cmd and run it from there. You cannot just click it.
Thanks but I cant get the SDK to work at all. Im still looking into it but at the moment it wont work
Please somebody help me with the SDK, I dont know what else to do.
I cant open the SDK manager and I cant open it through eclipse either.
Someone else must have had this problem before
Click the link in my signature and then "adb and fastboot. What is it?"
This will help you configure adb properly. It also helps you learn commands. Like adb push.
adb sideload is the same as push but you type sideload instead.
FYI as much as people round here say it, there is no such thing as a soft brick. Its brick or not brick.

Show down and don't panic. Your device is easily fixed. Hold the power button for 20 seconds. This will shut down the phone. Then press and hold the vol down then press the power button. That'll bring your into the bootloader.

Power + volume down button brings you in the bootloader, from there go into recovery (navigate with volume buttons and select with power button)
In recovery follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559200.
Or flash the factory image in the bootloader. (that should work because you need to unlock your bootloader in fastboot)
Thanks guys,
It wasnt working because water damage had interfered with the volume buttons previously.
I have a micro usb to usb adapter now.
Can i put a rom on a USB drive and install that way?
Thanks guys

HTC One Mini (M4_U4) Softbricked, OEM not unlocked, USB debug not enabled, bootloop

Hi all,
My HTC One Mini crashed one month after warranty (Boo!). I can get to the FASTBOOT and BOOTLOADER screen and select options. However, the Factory reset and recovery just cause a vibration and get be back to FASTBOOT menu. The phone is *** LOCKED ***.
After a few false starts on linux and mac machines, I've installed WinDroid Toolkit v3.1 on Windows 7. I have gotten the Token ID and used it to get an Unlock_code.bin via email from the HTC developers website (Cannot link as newb). However, when I follow the instructions in WinDroid it recommends that newer devices require "Enable OEM Unlock" to be set:
I cannot do this now. I continue but when it says a menu will appear on the phone, the menu does not and the phone remains in *** LOCKED *** state. I tried continuing with step 2 "Flashing a TWRP" but it does nothing.
TL;DR Am I screwed with having previously unlocked OEM on my HTC One Mini, now that it is soft-bricked?
I'm not that good at this stuff, but managed to get mine unlocked and a recovery on it via this link
sadly mine still has a problem in that it's now stuck in a boot loop, so don't use Oneclickroot as I did in my post here
hopefully you will get yours to work ok, but when you get to instruction 17 you may find that HTC website is quite fussy with the code you copy/paste
when you copy the Identifier block into Notepad or whatever, ensure you don't get any leading blank spaces before you submit it to HTC.
this excerpt from mine had blank spaces where I have inserted red X's, but it worked with them removed and HTC then emailed me the Unlock_code.bin file

I hope this is of some use mate

sorry,
lost the plot on my first reply and forget about the OEM unlock bit ...
to get that OEM unlock bit you would normally
first Enable Developer Modeon your phone by Launching the Settings Application -
Scroll Down and Tap on About Phone(or About Device) - Locate the Build Number Section - Tap on the Build Number Option 7 Times -
Go Back to the Main Settings Page - Scroll Down and Tap on Developer Options and it's found there
but given that you are in is bad a place as me in that we cannot get a bootup, I'm afraid I can't offer any more info,
but it's worth knowing anyway in case you do get booted up
Hi, i have the same issue, but a little different.
My phone was in a box for like 2 months, and then i decide to turn it on again, and i faced the same problem as the OP, but my One Mini is UNLOCKED, and i can't lock it again because i get an error in ADB. I try to enter on recovery (and flashed three differents recoveries without sucess), and reboot in bootloader, then try to factory reset, and reboot bootloader again. It don't do anything, only turn on when i plug the usb and enter in bootloader but no more than that. i've try to flash a RUU too, but it give me the error 171. i tried too the method with the rubber band pressing the power button to cause a reboot loop and get enough charge to launch the system but nothing, i don't see any results. I'm one step closer to give up, please help, i tried everything and nothing has worked for me. If need more information don't doubt on asking me. I really appreciate any help you can provide.
I'll try mate ... but perhaps you are asking for help from the wrong guy! - firstly I have to say mine is still in a very bad place! -
I managed to get a permanent TWRP on it, installed a lovely rom named InsertCoin on it, rebooted, and all seemed fine, but then the battery drained rapidly and it would not charge - that issue is ongoing and I'm spending ages on it just now..
Firstly can you confirm that you can enter Bootloader and select Fastboot, and that your phone is then recognised by your PC?
ie: let me know what happens when you press power and vol down together, select fasboot, goto PC, run ADB, cable phone to PC,
then issue the command ADB devices
can you also upload a photo of your bootloader screen

i don't need to press vol down and power together, the phone enter in bootloader once you plug the usb cable. it do that alone.
This is what i get
C:\adb>adb devices
List of devices attached
C:\adb>
the phone is recognized by HTC Sync manager but i can't see it in ADB.
a few things things jump out at me ...
1. from your photo the screen is shattered! - even though I don't like being beaten by phones I would scrap it
the repair would cost more than you can get one from ebay for - about £40.00
2. "abd devices" should return you something like ... "List of devices attached sh3d7h3dj631f6a7" - when it doesn't it show a device number it's usually your drivers
3. you may think that's not it since you say that it is recognised by HTC Sync when on your PC, but I had read that HTC sync is unreliable and that the drivers are not the best
the one's I used were HTC-Mobile-USB Driver-v4.17.0.001.exe but I can't remember where I got them and will upload them later today and send you a link.
(also, it pays to plug your usb cable into a rear port on your PC when doing this kind of work as front are not as reliable)
4. your Hboot is shown as 2.22 -this also can be a problem for TWRP see this link
5. the download link he has is broken, so get any TWRP above 2.7 from their website here

2. I will leave you down here exactly what i get when i type "adb devices" (with an attached image)
3. i have installed the latest HTC drivers, and i tried connecting my phone to front an rear usb ports, both of them. No results.
4. Down here i'll leave you an attached image of what i get when i try to install a recovery by typing "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" (i changed the name to recovery.img of course) and the phone seems installing the recovery in fastboot but it gave me that error in adb and when i try to enter in recovery it reboots on bootloader.
your first image does not 'see' your device mate, so there is no point in trying a flash of anything
until you get a response from "adb devices" that shows a device number you have no chance of getting anywhere!
I am quite certain that the problem MUST be with your drivers
my advice would be to uninstall the HTC Sync and clean out any drivers on your PC and to install the drivers and flash the TWRP I mentioned earlier
sorry I didn't upload earlier as I've been very busy indeed - they are now on my Google Drive ... links here .... and here

LG L90 (d405n) wont turn on (black screen). Help please.

Hi,
I tried to unlock bootloader. Rooted phone using King Root successfully. Opened bootloader using inside terminal and installing proper aboot. Then without restart i also flashed proper TWRP usning Twrp manager and after clicking reboot bang... black screen and nothing happens. Phone wont act on power button , keys combinations etc. When i connect it using usb i see partition with 2 folders (version and images). I tried some methods like using LG Flash Tool 2014 but it stucks on 4% and wont go ahead no matter what i do (recconecting ,removing battery etc). I would be VERY thankful if someone can provide me step by step solution or just do it via Teamviewer. If someone would like to help using TV method please contact me via skype (siuted.max - ID) and i ll provide TV ID.
Regards
Mat.
I really need that help guys I am even willing to pay for someone who is able to fix it.

I see nothing on the screen. No matter what i push (any combination) nothing appears. After connecting phone there is no sound. PC recognizes it as Android device. Thats all. No fastboot as well.

Hey. Sorry to say but phone is not giving any vibration or noise... Only windows gives a sound typical to connecting USB device and thats all. Phone looks like dead and only thing is recognizing it by windows.
Hey,
Anybody knows a solution ? I read some threads here but i failed when trying. I would really appreciate for step by step walkthrough.
Thank You!

[GUIDE] V20 Fastboot access in Windows.

So I'm seeing a ton of posts of folks not able to get fastboot to see their devices. I've done some tinkering around and found a set of drivers that work fine for both ADB and Fastboot. (Attached)
Uninstall any ADB drivers you have on your system. Easiest way is to plug your phone in, go into device manager, right click your phone and select uninstall and check the box that says to remove the driver as well.
Then download this package, extract, simply run install.exe as admin. Don't panic, it doesn't do anything visual.
Now plug your phone in and see if adb works, you may need to authorize the computer again on the phone so make sure it's unlocked.
Reboot into bootloader and check if fastboot sees the phone by using
Code:
fastboot devices
If not then go back into device manager and right click on your phone, select update driver, let me select one from a list and you should see "Fastboot interface (Google USB ID)". Select this one.
Check fastboot without unplugging with the same command. Check and see if you can send commands to the phone by using for instance,
Code:
fastboot getvar unlocked
If the command fails, simply plug the phone into a different USB port and the same Google driver should install again and you should be able to send commands to the phone. Alternatively, you can reboot the phone by tapping the battery out and starting it all over again.
Now she chooches.
Lemme know if you're still having problems.
bless up ??

any help please?
Verizon variant here,
I cannot seem to get this dang V20 in the right mode
(I've seen a bootloader or two in my day):highfive::laugh::silly:
I have used the adb command (several times)
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
to get it into bootloader mode, alas it is to no avail since all the command does is send the phone into "Restart" mode; nor can I get fastboot to recognize it when it is in, what I believe to be , the bootloader for said LG V20 of the
Verizon persuasion!
Suggestions?
You need fastboot, not bootloader... To get it, turn off your phone, plug your LG cable into the computer, ( but not the phone yet) hold the volume down key for 5 seconds then plug it into your cable, do not release the button till your phone boots. It should boot into fastboot... Provided you have turned on USB debugging in developer settings (turn on oem unlock while you are in there too. (this is the way on the tmo V20 at least... If that doesn't work, I would use the dirty Santa guide

Not sure how I finally got it working for my Verizon variant as I tried like four or five different ways, but someone should definitely make a video.. Perhaps I will since I think visuals are a good aid to go along with written instructions..
Thanks bro works
Very easy
With my t mobile v20
My phone shows as connected in adb devices. I can also get it to reboot bootloader, but once im there.. I cant issue any commands such as fastboot oem device-id. It gives me the dreaded waitng for any device.
can't manage to make this work for H990DS, i don't get the usual authorization window to the computer, only get the window to choose which USB mode (battery charge, file transfer, so on...) I'm trying to get adb to work to activate agressive Doze on Greenify app, any help?
Thanks
