I will get mine 2moro (though not holding breath till I get my hands on it) so I will try a host of hardware.

The printers were connected to other networked printers through USB.
HP and Dell have both released Windows RT compatibility lists for their printers:

USB audio device - guitar
I plugged in a cheap no name usb guitar interface and the rt picked it up as a usb input and audio device. I could not hear the output after trying a few settings but I was able to record it with a simple voice recording program I found in the store (toolbox). Believe it or not the audio latency was not too bad. Like I said I could not get the output to play simultaneously (probably too processor demanding) but it was encouraging that I could record it. I am a guitarist and one of the things I am hoping is for some good audio music production tools on the surface, which cannot be done on android due to latency issues. IPad owns the music production market currently so hopefully MS will be able to compete

-shows up in Control Panel as being a printer + scanner + fax + card reader, and I could've sworn I saw right-click menu items relating to scanning a few days ago, but now I don't see those (so for now, just the printer part is working-- but compared to other tablets, that itself is quite novel)

MS put up a Windows RT hardware compatibility page, with thousands of devices listed-- quite a lot more than I'd imagined (e.g. over 30 working USB-Ethernet adapters).

Microsoft's site seems to take an "innocent until proven guilty" approach. The site lists my StarTech USB21000S as Windows RT compatible with "free download required."
Sure, it's recognized by Windows RT, but it needs a driver. Windows Update looks, but can't find anything. And, since Windows RT doesn't have any way of installing third-party drivers -- and StarTech doesn't pretend to offer any on its site -- it's incompatible.

Hmm interesting. The chip driving the StarTech USB21000S seems to be the ASIX AX88178, which has all manner of drivers available (including WinCE 5/6 on ARM), so I assume maybe ASIX made one for WinRT (hence the listing), but if it's not on Windows Update, then yeah, it's incompatible from a consumer standpoint.
Some items there seem a bit odd, like Intel's Mini-PCIe wifi cards, which are listed as compatible. I doubt 1) any WinRT machines (at least during MS' tightly-controlled launch phase) are going to use separate Wifi modules and 2) that WinRT users will be swapping said modules. So seems more like an internal component (of which tons are obviously not on the site).

Oh neat- just noticed that Surface automatically installed a Metro app for my Canon MX892 ("Canon Inkjet Print Utility") that shows printer status (ink levels, etc.). Still no custom print options (paper type, etc.), but cool nonetheless.

[Q] USB sound card on Android?

I have a Android pad running 2.1 and it has 2 x USB ports and a lousy audio out (3.5 Jack).
I was wondering if USB soundcards work on Android? I am under the impression it is plug&play in linux, and that android uses the same audio driver? (just not via USB).
Beeing able to use a USB soundcard with propper sound would greatly improve sound quality (I want to use my pad in my car) :/

USB audio in Android progress
Just for note, it works! I recently added self-compiled snd-usb-audio modules to allwinner based tablet. Found corresponding /dev/snd/* devices. Hard part is to add switch to USB audio to java, if there are no full alsa support in ROM. If alsa used, I need only edit /etc/asound.conf ;-)

could you give some more details on how this was done?
USB OTG gets mouse/keyboard/mass storage working, but USB soundcard doesn't get sound through it (though the card is receiving power) and I cant see a way to check if it can see the device.
the USB soundcard I'm using was seen by my linux pc (kernel 3.0.0-15) straight away no drivers or config needed.
Here is a what I found on USB AUDIO output with Android (maybe it makes sense to put and update this table to the first topic)
NOTE: as of now SOME (not all!) USB AUDIO Android support implementations stream data through Android MUX that disturbs the original PCM stream for changing volume which means re-sampling original media, but also limited to 44.1kHz(some 48) 16 bit, so for SOME Android:
1) max all your volume controls while using external DAC
2) there is no reason to have / use DAC with higher rates then 44.1/16
3) there is no reason to have / use files of more then 44.1/16 quality. Trying to play 96kHz 24bit file will result in forcing Android to re-sample it on the fly with limited resources and not perfect algorithms leading to degrading output quality lower then proper done in studio or desktop 44.1/16!
There might be a way bypassing the Android layer and going right to ALSA you can do 24 bit.
If you specify a hardware device ("hw:0") in ALSA you can bypass any potential sample conversions.
*there is way around it in linux ALSA http://blog.agdunn.net/?p=434 but i have not seen such for Android

why you are sure that it is 24 bit coming out of Nook Touch tablet?
what ROM / kernel you are using?
where you specify a hardware device? this should be done editing config file or there is a menu items in settings interface?
I'm sure that it's 24 bit because I can look at the file and see that all the bits are exercised.
Moreover, since the microphone only hits about -30dBFS, I have to crank the gain.
Compared to a 16 bit recording (which is effectively 11 bits when using 30 dB gain), the 24 bits (effectively 19 bits) sounds much better.
The Nook doesn't have any builtin audio, except for Dummy which is hw:0
My application uses hw:1
There's really no need to select the audio adapter because there is usually just the one.

I am a bit confused.
can you explain step by step how to archive it on stock NOOK touch?
1)install custom ROM with kernel and USB host support?
2)install specific media player? which one do you use?
3)plug in USB DAC, player will use it as output by default so no hw:0 tweaking needed?

You will need a modified kernel.
The stock mediaplayer works but there is an unresolved bug that you need a little utility app to get over.

The MediaPlayer can not play 24 bit files.
To do anything 24 bit you need an external USB adaptor that supports it and an application that directly uses ALSA.
I believe that there are other 24 bit apps on the market.
24 bit is really only useful for recording when there is a large dynamic range.

I think we are talking about different use-cases.
My question was on plugging external 24bit/96kHz capable DAC (not ADC) to Android device and playing high quality 16bit/44.1 and higher .flac files using one of android players through that external DAC.
As i understand you've done it at least for 16bit DAC? and even mentioned that there is a way to bypass Android layer to get up to24 bit transparently out to the DAC and can highlight the steps for Nook Thouch to archive it.
Can you share your experience, settings and apps you've used?
Most USB adapters you will find are 16 bit.
To get 24 bit, you have to go to a "pro" interface, M-Audio, Lexicon, whatever.
ALSA supports 24 & 32 bits, but does not directly support MP3 or FLAC.
The Android layer supports MP3 (maybe FLAC?) playback, but not record.
You can get 24 bit playback just by using the ALSA utility aplay on PCM files only.
I do not know what there is on the market for 24 bit record/play.
You'd need an app with a JNI interface to the ALSA library.
I wrote a recording application for the Nook Touch that does that.

Just got stock Nook Simple Touch. Can you guide what steps to do to let it play music to external DAC?

The original product link was in error (pointed out by "IceFragmatic"). As suggested by IceFragmatic, most USB video INPUT for laptops/netbooks, are intended as capture devices, although I am not sure what he means by "due to DCHP", regarding HDMI being a very rare capture source.

Why not just buy a cheap screen with DVI and/or HDMI input?
I know that for the last few years, that there have been a small handful of expensive giant laptop PC's that provide for HDMI INPUT (yes, input), but there are as yet no netbooks or UMPC's that have a means to provide this .... would you agree with that statement?
(this is interesting from a hardware perspective, not necessarily from a business strategy perspective)
You're better off just using a VNC server program on the phone and a VNC client on the netbook while connected to a solid wifi. That will allow you to control the linux environment running on your phone from your laptop and doesn't require expensive video capture hardware. One does not simply use one's netbook as a monitor.
Sorry, should have referred to HDCP (not DCHP).
HDCP is a copy protection protocol used to stop digital copying of comercial DVDs and some TV streams.
The movie studios and owners of the HDMI licences do not want HDMI recorders without some form of protection to stop copying of DVDs. If this copy protection did not exist you could make perfect copies of DVDs and BluRay. Therefore HDCP has be introduced. This makes HDMI input/recorders useless for anything but home-made movies (and therefore not a big seller).

I ended up with the note after replacing my tf101 with the tf300 and tested the note and loved it in every way.
I'm not really even missing the keyboard dock and finding many ways to use the spen on a regular basis.
What I'd love though is to basically use the note as a digital whiteboard for teaching. Essentially to be able to write in smote or quill while sending the screen display over wifi to the PC connected to the projector system. Is there any way to do this? To do a live screencast from the note to a PC?

Have had zero luck even getting it to connect. PC install didn't work at work, tried at home and apparently needed to let it restart and then install all over. Still cannot connect the device though, device always scans when I turn on AllShare cat in network and Allshare on the PC recognizes an "intel" device. Thought for sure the Note would appear there.
Any tips on how to use it?
Does it actually do this? I gave up on it because what I see on Samsung's website only talks about sharing music/video and I didn't see any mention of streaming the tablet display to the PC. (Except the idea that you could watch a game on the PC, but see nothing about this in the app itself.)

You can execute AllShare through Samsung Kies, as well.
My suggestion would be to try and look at Remotes. You may be able to find drawing input ones. I use Unified Remote for using my phone/tablet as an input device. Although, the free version is limited to about 13 remotes or so. With the pro version you get it up in it's 50's. I'm not sure if this has what you're looking for but you can make your own custom remotes.
Or, alternatively, you can use a Remote Desktop client. Some of these may adjust your screen resolution on the PC so it fits well in the Note 10, but you can easily change it back. But it'll effect the view on the tablet. For this, I use Splashtop 2 HD.

What is Samsung Kies and what is Remotes?
I've done some investigating and I think the only way that AllShare works to screencast to another device is to send it to an AllShare Play device. Unfortunately I don't think (but really hope I'm wrong) the PC software works this way.

This is the setup I use and would suggest to everone in need to present from Galaxy Note 10.1:
buy Allshare Cast dongle , search for it on Amazon
buy HDMI to VGA adapter
connect HDMI to VGA adapter to projector and Allshare to A/C
on Note 10.1, Settings/More Settings/AllShareCast, the dongle will be detected something like "Dongle-xxxxx", tap to connect
When connected, start to present, wireless, move in the room, take the S-Pen and highlight the important topics etc.
On that way, no hassles with connection to PC/laptop and then to projector. AND the coolness factor is priceless! Every time I present there is a WOW factor, the downturn is sometimes people are not listening to my presentation but wants to see the technology.
And the Apple fanboys in the meetings around with their iPads - can you imagine several of them told me "nah, that is PROPRIETARY technology" !? LOL! I was very respectful before to other people opinions and personally I am very thankful to the genius work of Steve Jobs but in recent time I simple shoot back very sharp - face it, Apple funboy!

On that way, no hassles with connection to PC/laptop and then to projector. AND the coolness factor is priceless! Every time I present there is a WOW factor, the downturn is sometimes people are not listening to my presentation but wants to see the technology.
And the Apple fanboys in the meetings around with their iPads - can you imagine several of them told me "nah, that is PROPRIETARY technology" !? LOL! I was very respectful before to other people opinions and personally I am very thankful to the genius work of Steve Jobs but in recent time I simple shoot back very sharp - face it, Apple funboy!

I don not own any Apple product and cannot say anything about it.
Everything what you can see on your Note 10.1 screen you are seeing parallel on the second display. I have tested it with several projectors from Dell, Sony, signal to those devices over their VGA ports and the experience is exactly the same to one with the laptop connected to the projector. The best result is via HDMI port, majority of the business projectors do not have one but monitors and TV have them and the result is gorgeous, beside the screen the audio is transferred too.
The video player is optimized for the AllShare Cast, when playing you can see the video on the second screen and on Note 10.1 you have the control menu.
Polaris office works fine too, same experience, WYSIWYG on both screens. For slides (aka PowerPoint), when connected to AllShare Cast dongle, the slide show button clicked shows the selection of
Primary display
Dual monitor
Controller & Note
but only the Primary display selection switches to presenter mode. Even then, the pen modes is active so you can annotate with S-Pen direct on the slides during the presentation, the killing feature for me.

That sounds amazing. I'd love to see a video of it all in action. Sounds great, especially being able to run a presentation and markup with the pen, but would like to see it before dropping about $100 on the setup.
I've been testing splashtop whiteboard but have had problems getting it to connect. Sometimes it will.... sometimes it won't. Would prefer to just screencast and run everything from the tablet anyway. The presentation mode sounds impressive and ability to swith into Sketchbook or snotes would be great.

First off thank you for your help and input. My school is going to purchase this for me but I have one additional question. We do not have HDMI projectors in our building. I was wondering if an HDMI-VGA adapter would work? It will not provide true 1080P but that is a non-issue for me. I only want to be able to project the S-Note or any note app so my students can take notes on what I am writing. Again thank you for your help.

I use Gold Plated Premium HDMI to VGA Active M/F Adapter in White by Cable Matters (still cannot post links, just search for it on amazon) and it works, tested on several company's Dell and Sony projectors with VGA port.
FYI - I filed a support ticket with Polaris Office about not being able to use the different display modes. This was their response.

Hopefully they have a solution soon. The only thing that would improve this setup is being able to use the Controller & Note presentation mode.
Anyone have an idea what I am doing wrong? .I can project the screen when the dongle is connected with HDMI, but when I connect with an HDMI to VGA converter the Allshate Cast automatically shuts down and the Note restarts.

did anyone manage to solve the display mirroring to PC software?
I found another way to get very good results in mirroring wirelessly from Note to PC: Teamviewer. Download the free app from the play market, and also the free PC client from the Teamviewer website. A tad laggy, but works well for presentations.

I just got the dongle. It works great!
A few comments:
(1) For rooted device (like mine), the app "triangle away" is needed. The dongle works after (but not before) I reset the counting using triangle away. For un-rooted devices (the device is un-rooted if you didn't root it yourself) it shouldn't be an issue.
(2) The dongle works with a hdmi-VGA converter. The one I bought is this:

I am sure lots of other converters should work as well. But there may be two things to note. It would be safer if
(a) "Active" converters should have more chance to work than "passive" converters. There is an IC chip in active converters. The passive ones are just data lines.
(b) Make sure the converter does not need too much power to work. The one I bought is raspberry PI compatible. This typically mean the converter the current it draws from the device is not too large. In some previous post it is mentioned the dongle could reset when connected to VGA converters. I doubt it may because of too much power required by the converter.
(3) I didn't notice any lag or instability issues with 30 minutes of use (I installed a firmware update before usage. The discovery of update and installation is automatic. I just clicked OK).
I didn't (and will not) use it to play games or watch movies anyway. I only want to use it to do presentations via projectors. Games and movies transfers much more data, in which case I haven't tested.
I will update if I got problems using the dongle for a longer time.
(4) The "multi-window app" feature goes away when the dongle is connected. (It re-appears after disconnection.)
UPDATE:
After more test, there do exist a few problems:
(1) If I play a video in full screen (both youtube video online or downloaded videos using MXplayer), the video is only shown on external display. Even worse, when I exit the full screen mode of the video player, the allshare connection typically crashes. I need to go to settings to connect again (no reboot needed though).
On the other hand, for youtube without going to full screen, there is no problem. And when I compare the two displays, there is no lag between them.
(2) In polaris office, only the "primary display" mode works well. In other two modes, the external screen only update partially.
Both of them should be software problems. If I don't do (1) of the above, I never met crash or disconnections. I didn't test the device with games. There is no random disconnection so far (this is most important for me).
The connection is stable within 10 meters, while it breaks at about 30 meters (together with 2 doors blocking the space).
Finally, there is a drop of display quantity if the image is quickly changing, and I watch closely enough. But considering I only need to display static images, this is not a problem. The display quantity of static images is great. Compared with the TeamViewer + computer solution, the dongle uses less resources on the tablet and gives much better image quality. The usage of battery is not heavily affected either. I used in total 7% battery power per hour for light usage of the tablet with dongle connection (and among which the tablet screen still used most of battery as usual).

InputStick: Android to USB wireless adapter

Well I'm not really sure if this is the best place for this thread, since it is related to many things (hardware, Android accessory, API and applications).
OK, so here's a project that I've been working on for quiet some time: InputStick, which is Android to USB wireless adapter (I guess that's the best way to describe it).
What is it?
It's a small USB dongle that allows Android applications to emulate USB devices, like keyboard, mouse, game controllers etc (mostly HID devices, but not only). This allows apps to type, move mouse pointer, control multimedia playback, control games and many other things.
How is it different form software-only solutions?
plug and play: no configuration/software/custom drivers
works with any USB enabled system (PC, Android, consoles, Raspberry Pi etc)
no network connection is necessary (just Bluetooth in your Android device)
The only bad thing is that you need additional piece of hardware, but that's the price of compatibility and very quick set-up time.
How to use it?
plug InputStick into USB port
run an app, connect with InputStick (I usually include "auto-connect" option)
wait a few seconds (initiating Bluetooth connection, uploading configuration data, USB enumeration)
it's ready, now the app can do anything that can be done using USB device it is emulating
How does it work?
InputStick is a "man in the middle" between Android device and USB host:
Android Device <-(Bluetooth)-> InputStick <-(USB)-> USB Host (PC, laptop, game console, etc).
Applications:
I came up with several apps, for different scenarios. Some examples:
Password Manager that can type (as a USB keyboard) web page address, user name and passwords
Gamepad (works with PC and some PS3 games)
Barcode Scanner that can type scanned codes
Application that allows to execute pre-defined sequences of keyboard and mouse actions (macros)
Remote controller (keyboard and mouse)
Presentation remote
Also, I work on an API that allows to easily add support for InputStick in applications. API takes care of managing Bluetooth connection and whole USB thing. There are following USB devices already implemented: keyboard, mouse, gamepad, consumer control (volume, playback). Using for example USB keyboard in your application can be almost as easy as:

keyboard.type("hello");

Works perfect. I use it with Keepass2Android in the office to easily transmit the masterpassword to Keepass for Windows. Now I hope there will be more apps that support it.

LG 360 VR PC adapter

I just thought I should share this, since the VR Headset has extremely limited functionality through the phone.
There is a dongle available from a company in South Korea that enables PC use (for movies and Youtube) specifically for the 360 VR. It basically converts HDMI output from your graphics card to USB-C and also has a micro-USB secondary connection for controls.
The name of the tool is Vagle VRD-1000 VR Data Transformer. I was able to get one from the US Amazon this week and waiting for it to arrive and test.
The price was not prohibitive compared to HDMI to USB-C capture boxes that run for a few hundred bucks and it seems tailor made for the LG 360 VR.

I've received the adapter this week. It works as advertised for playing individual VR video files and Youtube VR streams. I had to download the VR Player from the manufacturer's website and it appears like a modified version of CodePlex VR Player. It includes a device preset for the LG headset. It also installed the K-lite codec pack and VLC automatically.
Head tracking works, video was a bit jittery as I could only test it on my laptop under W10 with an Intel IGP. The manual specifies Intel Graphics are not recommended. My desktop is sitting waiting for memory modules and I will test again once fixed.
One thing to note - as I connected the glasses through the adapter Windows set them up as a second monitor at their native resolution however I couldn't see anything. The glasses only fired up as I've opened the VR Player. However, after closing the player, the glasses still showed the desktop, but it was rotated by 90 degrees. I will try to rotate the desktop on my PC and see if I can have the picture laid out properly. If it works, it might allow me to play my flight sim on the headset.
Long story short, if you want to watch VR videos on the computer, the dongle will work. I've got the LG 360 VR for $60 off ebay and ended up spending more for the dongle ($90). All together it came down to less than a brand new LG 360 VR bought from LG.

hi Rothas, I tried to plug lv 360 directly into my NUC which has usb-c (thunderbolt 3, compatible with displayport over usb c), it recognizes it as a display 1440*960. but like you said below, nothing is shown on the goggle. want to try this vr player - you said you had to download from manufacturer's website? can't find the website even , can you help?

everything works inside vr player once the tracker is set to LG ER1 - I guess it tells VR player to align the orientation from the goggle.
can't seems to get it to work directly - it shows the screen but are 90 degree turned, one clock wise and the other eye counter clockwise, so you can't even change alignment in display setting to fix both eyes
overall I am very happy, just saved $100 on this Vagle if your computer is able to output displayport over USB C directly - it works exactly as the adapter does.

Oh, I forgot to mention to load up the .json preset included with the player, it does something to the viewing plane.
I still haven't tested rotating the display in W10 due to lack of time, I'll post something once I'm done.
I wish I could've saved the $100 but my desktop doesn't have native USB-C :laugh:

Could someone owning said converter please open it up and take pictures of both sides of the PCB? I want to gather some information on the SLIMPORT chipset they used so I can hack together my own adapter.
I am not able to purchase the VRD-1000 it here in europe and importing it would cost me over 200 USD which is quite a bummer
Help would be greatly appreciated! Of course Ill share my findings if this leads to something!

There was a question about components used in that Data Transformer dongle. It's not a direct answer, but the following press note lists the components used in LG G5 phone and in glasses themselves (google for the following title):
"Analogix and LG Take Mobile VR to the Next Level with LG 360 VR"
The components are:
LG G5: SlimPort ANX7816 transmitter and ANX7418 USB-C switch and controller;
LG 360 VR: SlimPort ANX7737 converter and ANX7402 USB-C controller.
I have a question to alanma75. What happens when you plug LG glasses to your NUC, without starting that VR prlayer? What do you need to do to force the glasses to show anything?
I have access to one Win7 and one Win10 laptops with USB-C interface. When I connect glasses to them, laptops recognize an external display of 1440x960 resolution, I can extend the desktop to that space, I can drag the windows there, but the glasses remain dark. For a moment I thought that simply there is no back-light triggered, but I don't see any activity on those LCD pa panels (yes, I unscrewed the lenses to look directly at LCDs). What needs to be done to kick-start the goggles?
Just picked up one of these headsets for $20, B&H photo has them refurb for that right now. Have had my eyes on these to try and hack and mod a bit.
But reading over the info, it's gonna be a tough one, maybe not really worth it.
The Vagle VRD-1000 is pretty interesting, this PDF has some interesting details about what it does internally:

Interesting parts: I see HDMI to Display Port and DDC. DDC appears to be "Display Data Channel" which is an i2c protocol. See here for some info on that and how that fits in to USB - C https://www.mouser.com/applications/usb-type-c-adds-hdmi/
Perhaps DDC is used to instruct the goggles how to display - for instance it's been mentioned of people getting images, but 90 degrees rotation? Perhaps DDC is used to instruct the goggle how to orient the image, etc.
Then also I see mentioned "Coordination info" this is probably motion tracking info I'm guessing. Personally I'm not as interested in this aspect, I'm more interested in just being able to control the displays, maybe get general HDMI input working.

The code for get orientation data from USB сan be found after decompiled "Vr Player.Trackers.LgeR1360Tracker.dll" (C#, decompiled without problems with using ILSpy). File "Vr Player.Trackers.LgeR1360Tracker.dll is located in the player folder [1][2]
There can do support for SteamVR and other vr programs.
snap3D, it is probably necessary to send the packet over USB to enable it. LG G5 (or Vagle VRD-1000) most likely sends a special package to turn on the displays. Probably it's done so people do not try to connect to the PC. Need to capture the usb packet (from Vagle).
I also have G5 phone (and obviously VR360 glasses light up when LG app is running and glasses proximity sensor is covered; glasses immediately turn off when proximity sensor is uncovered), but unfortunately no access to USB-C analyzers. It would be interesting to see if the glasses connected to PC (via Vagle adapter or directly through USB-C interface) can continue to show the image after initial packet trigger. To test that theory I ordered a "MeeGoPad T09" micro computer (for $130 from "geekbuying" Asian site), which is less than $10 more expensive than the Vagle adapter (and as a bonus I'll have a tiny PC running Win10 OS; you can go even smaller with PC-stick "MeeGoPad T08"; both MeeGoPads have USB-C interface). I'll try to install that proprietary VR player s/w (link provided earlier in this thread) on MeeGoPad and we will see what happens.

I think that "USB Packet" might actually be an i2c packet over a wire that's a part of the USB C spec. The DDC "Display Data Channel" signal I mentioned before. So might be easier to reverse engineer than a USB packet would.

So I took my goggles apart just to look around inside. Noticed these test pads on the main PCB, labelled GND, 5V, D-, D+ and B. So that looks like USB to me, but not sure what B is. These might just be some kind of ISP firmware update pads or something though. I might try to solder a USB A cable to them, plug it in to my computer and see what happens. Also here's a picture of the back side of the board just for info. Let me know if anyone wants a picture of something specific.
