Greetings all,
When trying to reset or refresh my Surface RT, I receive the following error:
Could not find the files needed
If you have a Windows installation or recovery media, insert it and restart the PC from the media.
Obviously, the Surface RT comes with no such media, so I'm unsure what to do. I think there was a way to fix this error on Windows 8 by moving the install.wim file over and doing some command line entries, but given I can't find an install.wim for RT, that doesn't seem to be possible.
I can confirm that per Disk Management, the recovery partition is there, as is the EFI partition and the main Windows partition. I was able to do this procedure once successfully, but when trying to do it again, I am unable to do so due to the error.
-Justin
I don't know if this will be of any assistance but I did find this page that has a slew of details:
http://www.microsoft.com/Surface/en...vice-and-recovery/windows-rt-stops-responding
If you follow the instructions to get a recovery key it might help you somehow. I'm really just grasping at straws because it is so new...
Good luck and please post here if you resolve the issue. It might help others.
Yeah, tried that, my boot options in there are Continue to Windows RT, Boot (with options for hard drive and USB), and shutdown.
It's all quite bizarre. I expect I'm just missing some file somewhere that points it to the recovery partition.
Could someone with a Surface RT open up an admin command prompt and run reagentc.exe /info, and reply with the output?
That may get me back on track, since that should output the details for Recovery.
here you go.

Well, some minor progress. ReAgentC fails, but it looks like my C:\Recovery folder is empty from seeing what a proper info output is above. Anyone willing to zip that folder up and post it for me? Its a hidden folder, not sure what the size is, but mine is definitely empty. I believe the files in that folder tell Windows where the recovery partition is located.
Did you find a solution for that problem? My Surface experiences the same issue, after having succefully restored it the first and only time yesterday.

plug in a usb keyboard... hold shift on it after being detected and hit power-> restart.
Hope this helps and dont forget the thanks button.

Thanks for the answer, but this only brings me to the advanced startup screen where I have the choice between "Continue", "Use a Device (either USB, Network or Windows Recovery DVD)" or Shutdown PC. The second option only offers me the choice between "Hard Drive" and "USB Drive".

I also do think, that it might be the empty c:\Recovery Folder that causes the Problem. So if anybody could provide the content (as a zip) of this folder to me, I would highly appreciate that

I don't have a C:\Recovery Folder on my Surface, if that helps. I've used the Reset feature many times, and the only thing named recovery is a text file in the root with 0 bytes.
It sounds like you need a Recovery Drive: Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Recovery.
I created one shortly after setting up my Surface, thinking I could ditch the recovery partition and regain some space. After seeing how many times I've refreshed and reset this thing, I changed my mind about deleting the recovery partition.
That said, if you're near a Microsoft Store, drop by and see if they have a Recovery Drive on hand. That might solve your Surface's problem.

Actually, you do have a C:\Recovery folder, but it's a system folder and is hidden by default.
In fact, even if I take ownership of the folder, and give myself full control, it won't actually let me view the contents of it though.

I have hidden files and folders turned on, but there's no C:\Recovery folder.

Ah, I'd mistakenly thought showing "Hidden Items" from the View ribbon would show those.
So I turned off Hide Protected OS Files, and found the Recovery folder.
But when I opened a command prompt with administrative privileges and visited the folder, it was empty, just like yours.

Hi, All
I found it's difficult to find a correct apk file among names when I want to install one to my lovely G1, then I did a windows extension.
you need .NET framework 2.0 or above installed.
download the dll here http://code.google.com/p/apkshellext/downloads/list
Works Only on XP 32bit and possibly on win7 32bit.
Doesn't work on x64 platform for now. It's ok if you want a try
extract all stuff in the zip,
excute reg.bat,
after register successfully, you will got, probably you need a reboot

Doesnt seem to work on win 7
Not working on Windows 7 64-bit.
Thank you for your share and wonderful tool!
I am not sure if it's the same for both XP and Vista (haven't tried 7 yet) but there is an easier way (tried and tested).
Open an Explorer (not Internet Explorer) window. Folder, computer, doesn't matter.
Go to Tools then Folder Options
Click on View tab
Check the Hide extensions for known file types
Then click OK
It's been working for me.

While any power user should have that option disabled, that's not what this post is about. This is about getting Windows to use the icon embedded in the APK. (32-bit Vista, need to reboot to be sure, but not working yet)
Couldn't make it work on Windows XP prefoessional either.
Said it registered but no icons apear.
[EDIT]: It does work! Just needed a reboot. Thanks for this!
ooops...finally another user claim successful....I though it will never success except on my machines...
after register, probably no need to reboot, just kill your explorer and restart it....
looks like vista and 7 is using a different interface for extracting icon for certain kind of file... I will look into it...
I'm going to add some feature like add a context menu to install apk to your Gphone...
any good idea?
for 64bit OS user, here is a workaround... before I release a 64bit version..

I can not get it to work on my xp I've tried rebooting, killing explorer, and extracting to different directories. Do I need to extract it to \system32?
Hi,
I create a x64 version, but since I don't have x64 OS, please have a try and feed back.
download here ->
http://apkshellext.googlecode.com/files/apkshellext.dll
use the old reg.bat to register, probably, you have to kill your explorer first, and run the bat using "run..." command

you don't have to extract it to system32, but you need to run the reg.bat first, and you should see something like "register successful" message. after it, you cannot move the dll file, since the path is recorded in registry.
sometimes the icon doesn't show since icon cache, please try see the properties of your apk file, if everything correct, you should see the icon in the properties window.
if still doesn't work, here is a piece of registry keys extract from my computer, please check if you have the same:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.apk]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.apk\DefaultIcon]
@="%1"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.apk\shellex]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.apk\shellex\IconHandler]
@="{66391a18-f480-413b-9592-a10044de6cf4}"
still problem, reply again, describe what you did and I will try my best to help

Maybe I am wrong but i do not see anywhere saying this is for Droidexplorer.
From the explanation this is for the regular build in explorer for MS so for it not working in droid explorer i would say thats a droid explorer issue since that is not the normal ms one but a custom build application

I never said it was for Droidexplorer. Droidexplorer was my cause for the icons not working. So I uninstall it...now all my apk's have icons.
Didn't work for me either running XP. I looked through properties like others suggested but found nothing that would allow me to change this. Does it have to be changed where it says "open file with..." or is something else changing?

Install Instructions:
*flashable zip in post 6
You can change the name you want displayed under your icon by opening autorun.inf in any text editor and changing the 'label=' value.
You may have issues viewing the icon or renaming the drive if you don't unmount then remount after first 'install'.
If you want to install both of these (at separate times, of course) I highly recommend that you rename the 'icon' and 'label' values in autorun.inf as well as the .ico file or you may get a black icon where a white should be or vice versa.
Thanks, looks great!
Good Idea, thank you for sharing.

Download one of the attached .zip files
Attach your X10 to the computer and mount the sd card from the pulldown menu on your phone and open to the root
Unzip the contents of your .zip file to the root of your MicroSD (2 files)
Choose to safely remove the MicroSD {ie PHONE CARD (F: )} on your computer then unmount it from the pulldown menu on your phone
Done. The next time you mount the sd to the computer it will have a custom name and icon.

This is SO not noob friendly
I download the zip file (by default goes to sdcard/downloads)
I attached my phone to my comp and mounted my sdcard, I think....I selected "turn on usb storage" is that mounting my sdcard?
Here's where I get lost, you said "and open to the root"....please clarify.
First problem is I don't have any option that says "mount sdcard" in the pull down menu once you connect the phone to the pc, when I pull down that menu it says "USB Debugging connected" and "USB connected, select to copoy files to/from your computer." When I select that option, the contents of my sdcard automatically pop up in a window on my pc, I can't get to the root of my sdcard on my comp. Opening Root Explorer and trying to access my sdcard results in an error that says "sdcard is not currently mounted" and won't allow access. I then went to settings/storage to see if I could mount my sdcard that way but the option was greyed out, it was as if I didn't even have an sdcard in my phone as none of the other sdcard info was populated either.
I then ejected my device from my pc and turned off usb storage, went back to settings/storage, and my sdcard was recognized and the "unmount sdcard" option was active, making me think that when the phone recognizes my sdcard, that means it's mounted. Also making me think that in your directions you mean "turn on usb storage" not "mount sdcard".
How do you gain root access via PC? The best I could do was see everything stored on the sdcard.
When you unzip the zip, you have a folder that contains the 2 files, are we supposed to copy/paste those files somewhere or can we just put the whole folder where it needs to be?
Please advise

Give it up guys, these icons will not work on GB, since for security reasons Android deletes all autorun.inf files from SD card each time it is mounted. I've tried many options, like making it readonly, system etc., still no luck - file gets deleted.

Here's my setup for NAND Installation: (Download all 4 files)
a. casacristo's VALENTINE ROM build (extract androidinstall.tar from the downloaded file using winrar or any rar decompression program)
http://www.ziddu.com/download/13802744/androidinstall.rar.html
b. l1q1d's 2.6.25 kernel POLAIMG.NBH
c. install-seq.sh
d. You might need to flash the kernel with this file CustomRUU.exe
(See Attached file for download links below)
IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
The NAND installation doesn't work in automated mode. You have to enter the
Android BOOT Menu mode and install from there. Resetting the phone also will not work. You have to enter the Boot Menu and press Exit. OR you can rename the file install-seq.sh to anything so reboot works automatically.
Try these STEPS for installing Android on your Polaris NAND:
IF YOU ARE NEW TO MODDING ANDROID ON YOUR POLARIS I SUGGEST TRYING l1q1d's TUTORIALS FIRST. I suggest you have newer bootloader and radio. Im not responsible for what you do with your phone anyway.
1. Create a folder named Andboot on your SD card and copy the 2 files androidinstall.tar and install-seq.sh inside the folder.
2. Insert your SDCard on your Polaris.
3. Go to Bootloader Mode by pressing RESET once while pressing down the Camera button.
4. Once the 3-color Bootscreen comes out, connect your Polaris to your Computer thru the USB cable and check that the screen says "USB" and not "SERIAL" anymore.
5. Put CustomRUU.exe and POLAIMG.NBH together inside any folder and RUN CustomRUU.exe. Follow the instructions on screen. When the format is over your phone will reset and Android installation begins.
6. HOLD PRESS the Volume UP button until the installation texts roll on the screen and you come into the Android Boot Menu. IF YOU DONT, then RESET the phone and do it again.
7. Choose the menu "Install System" and let Android install for a while.
8. Installation finished. Choose Exit and let Android roll. Congratulations.
WHAT'S WORKING?
I tried the following...
Camera, WIFI, GPS, Bluetooth, Removable Disk Mode in USB works when connecting USB while logging in to Windows, ... Battery is more accurate.
WHAT's NOT WORKING?
VideoCamera... dont ever try it freezes; Install to SD...nope!
WHAT's NEW?
New Market, New Battery Image, No frequent forecloses, lesser resets
WHAT's IN?
Comes installed with GOLauncherEX (I preferred LauncherPro), SwiFTP, APNdroid, and more.
I recommend the following apps (tried and tested):
*Contapps for Contacts (syncs with FB, Twitter to name a few)
*ChompSMS for Messaging
*LauncherPro for Launcher
*Friendcaster for Facebook
*QuickPic for Gallery
*FileExpert for File Navigation
*GPS Essentials
*KS Uninstaller
*Easy Installer
*ClockQ
*Tubemate
I trying it now. I have had problem with installing apps in app store but after phone restart is all ok. I love the speed of this system
Thanks for trying. Thanks by the way to l1q1d for his kernel and Atools and tech. I chose to use his 2.6.25 kernel since that has working camera. You might wanna try with the latest 2.6.32 kernel maybe more results would be favorable. If you can find a better setup pls share also, for now I'd be sticking with this combo. The battery status by the way is accurate and reliable. I got 5% juice and the phone is still working though reminding me to connect to charger. Previously on the Froyo combination the phone is dead at 25%.
Question
Hey guys. First of all thank you for posting this thread, and second, can you please tell me if i can use this build with haret, not nand. I tried to install it but i didnt succed. Can you please help me?
I can't install it too? Everytime i see can't extract the files, after it reboot and hold the vol up bottom?
Hmm sorry my mistake, i forgot to unpack "androidinstall.tar"
I'm gonna comment after use
Seems to work proberly? You say install on nand, but why does it still use the sdcard when reboot?
I have a problem.
After I installed it,I turn off my phone and turn on it again.
I failed to boot the android,it says "Failed to format".
Plz help me!
oh sorry. i know what's wrong now.
Hello again guys. I have managed to install it in haret. I must say its fast but still not so "super" . It doesnt load the market (gives me a server side error), launcher freezes. I will test it some more and get back asap.
LE: Seems to be working. I dont know how, but it is. I am downloading apps as i type. And btw, the battery indicator is much accurate then before. Thank you again.

I'm having a load of trouble doing this, probably cause im a noob :[
i followed the instructions but ended up with a white flashing screen and couldn't do anything. I've just installed the original software windows mobile 6.1 and I'll try again. Hope i can get it to work this time!
does androidinstall.tar need to be unpacked, or do i just unpack that file from the rar?
i did the same thing ... i didnt unpacked the archive and it didnt worked. so you should unpack and try again.
same thing has happend again with just the .tar file on there, my phone completes the installation and when it goes to boot up it vibrates twice and flashes on the white screen, any help would be appreciated
The issue lies on the kernel (POLAIMG.NBH). Your Polaris could have a different panel coz there are actually other types. Please read l1q1d's original tutorial on how to use Atools to obtain a kernel suited for that phone. Just try one of the panel type from that tutorial and if it dont work try the other. You can always use the androidinstall.tar file from this post with that kernel.

First of all, all props goes to the OP of this thread. This is merely a step-by-step detailed guide on the process since there were a lot of members complaining that the steps were unclear.
- Download the following and extract all the files:
MT6577 USB VCOM drivers (link: http://www.mediafire.com/?2sf30pboet4qvov)
SP Flash Tool v3.1224.01.rar (link: http://www.mediafire.com/?h68v8yhhtci8h0e)
CWM-ROOT-B92M.zip (link: http://www.mediafire.com/?8o2yx9ssz1abwon)
2.5gb-data-perm-root.zip (link: http://www.mediafire.com/?4wg5f6rgat8qdrt)
- Install the MT6577 USB VCOM drivers drivers
- Inside the 2.5gb-data-perm-root folder make sure the files have the following names (CASE SENSITIVE!):
recovery.img
EBR1.img
boot.img
logo.img
MBR.img
preloader.img

}
- Turn off your phone and unplugg the USB cable
- Start SP Flash Tool
- Under options in the menubar check "USB mode"
- Under File in the menubar click on "Open scatter-loading file" and select MT6577_Android_scatter_emmc.txt from the CWM-ROOT-B92M folder
- Double click the following rows inside SP Flash Tool:
PRELOADER and select preloader.img (from 2.5gb-data-perm-root folder)
MBR and select MBR.img (from 2.5gb-data-perm-root folder)
EBR1 and select EBR1.img (from 2.5gb-data-perm-root folder)
BOOTIMG and selet boot.img (from 2.5gb-data-perm-root folder)
RECOVERY and select recovery.img (from 2.5gb-data-perm-root folder)
LOGO and select logo.img (from 2.5gb-data-perm-root folder)
You should have the following then:
- Click on "Download" inside SP Flash Tool
- Take out the battery of the phone
- Put the battery in
- Connect USB cable with your computer
- The bar at the bottom of SP Flash tool should go to 100% a few time and present you with a green circle when done
- Done flashing, hit volume up + power to start up CWM and make a backup
I hope this detailed guide helps everyone out

Red triangle
Hi, i cant get to the recovery mode...

Can you help?
What ROM can you use with this ?
Some of the files are named a little bit differently, but overall pretty much straightforward steps thanks to the guide above.

I did not have to do that. I simply added a Google account, started the Google Play Store and it told me there was an update for "superuser".
Did the update, rebooted and done!

Your best option is to contact the seller and ask him for more information about this.
After flashing with 2.5GB ROM, I have issue with my camera: it detects 80MB partition as the SDcard partition.
Anyone know how to change this? Or.. which file should I look for to change the camera save location?
Make sure you have an external sd-card inserted in the phone. It should automatically be mounted to /sdcard/ where you should have enough space to store your camera photos.

What charger are you using and how fast/slw will it charge a empty battery?
Mine takes for ever (8hrs from 0%), the charger fastcardnet send me, but also a standard usb charger i got.
I'm just using the default micro USB chargers I have laying around. I never charge via a computer (USB) though.

Yes worked!
Hi,
I have followed this guide but I didn't get root access.
I also wiped data and did the factory reset but there is no superuser...
What do I have to do now?
And I have another question: What do I need to do to go to the Internet by connecting to my Laptop (in it's function as a Wifi-hotspot) and using his wired-internet-connection? I only got it by Ad-Hoc but it seems that this doesn't work anyway...
Thx,

Try flashing again and Superuser should be working. Once flashed I suggest you start the play store and you'll see that there is an update available.
About the Wi-fi: that's something computer related so don't know for sure about that one. I just Googled and came across this website:

I have the same problem, how did you fix it?
I had a 2.5 GB space on my Internal SD Card before I do this root, now it is 83 MB, I could try a factory reset but I still need the rooting so I will run into this problem again.

When I first did the root I did not the su.zip step so I booted my phone and it informed me that my internal SD card is damaged amd asked me if I wanted to format it, I clicked yes and then it became 83 MB, I did the root again and flashed su.zip too, I also tried to format the internal SD card but it is still 83 MB.
I think I need to reformat with specifying the new size, how can I do that?

THIS TOOL REQUIRES ANDROID IS ROOTED !
In order to work properly an Android device depends on having an adequate amount of RAM ( read: physical memory ). Simply saying that there can never be enough. The more RAM is installed the better it is.
Swap space helps your Android system ( kernel ) to quickly organize RAM if there is need for it. To be open with you, Swap space is not absolutely necessary in case your system has tons of RAM. In case of emergencies it helps your system to survive.
However there are a few reasons why Swap memory is useful:
First,
sometimes single processes need more memory than the system physically owns and can provide more to the processes that demands it. As a result, all data that is kept in physical memory cannot be stored there any longer. Now, the swap space comes into play, and a selection of memory pages are transferred to the swap space to free physical memory.
Second,
not all the data is needed in memory at the same time. That’s why less used memory pages are parked on swap space to have as much free physical memory available as possible.
Due to Covid-19 lockdown I had the time to write a Windows CMD script ( coded in pure DOS ) what prepares adding / adds Swap space to Android.
Example screenshots:
If you are interested in this then download the ZIPed package, extract it to any loaction of your destop and run the .BAT-file located therein.
Download: http://www.mediafire.com/file/8dnp45etg416725/Android-Virtual-RAM-Creator.zip/file
Please feel free to report errors if any are found.
Thank you! How can we delete the swap file if we want to restore original situation?
Remove it from
1. fstab file - thus it doesn't get mounted at Android boot
2. from internal sdcard
Any solution to this? My phone is rooted and USB debugging is enabled. There isn't any instructions or readme to follow for guidance?

If the check whether ADB on PC is being able to communicate with the device fails then you might need to uninstall the USB driver that recognizes your phone, then manually install the USB driver that matches your device's brand/model.

You're right, I still had ADB drivers installed from an old phone I was messing around with. After fixing that it ran through, but fails at a later point. How can I fix this?

Have re-run the script at the moment - Windows 10 64-bit laptop.
No such errors occurred.

I had to manually create the 'virtual-ram' folder for it to get past that error and then it ran into more errors even though it made the swap.img file, so I'm not sure if it worked or not.
Thanks for reporting. Have revised the script. Please re-download the update.
