Custom Recovery - Asus Transformer TF700

Can a moderator rename this thread to "A Few Questions"?
Sent from my HTC Rezound

Never mind. I now understand how to unlock, flash recovery and flash a ROM.
Now that that's out of the way...
Would one recommend doing a system wipe on stock before unlocking and flashing recovery and ROM?
Is TWRP accepted to be the best custom recovery?
After unlocking, flashing recovery, and flashing ROM, all I will have to do to root is flash the root files, correct? Since I'll be unlocked.
After flashing CleanROM, should I do a system wipe (will it work the same way it does on stock but with CleanROM instead?)
Now what I am wondering is how I use that overclocked kernel I've been reading about, with CleanROM.

Most ROM devs will tell you to wipe data before you install their ROM to be sure there is no old stuff left that could be incompatible.
TWRP is a good recovery, and so far I am happy with it - didn't try the current CWM though.
For (re-)gaining root, you just start your recovery and flash a superuser zip, e.g. SuperSU. If you flashed a pre-rooted ROM, you don't even need that.
If you wiped before installing CleanROM, you don't need to wipe again afterwards.

Is there any specific version of TWRP I should use?
Is there a pre-rooted version of CleanROM?

I just installed the latest TWRP over CWM recovery using GOO.
I find the touch version features of twrp easier
...and yes CleanROM 2.3 is already rooted.

I'm not sure what you mean. You can do a backup of your current state, or you can flash a new rom from via zip file
If you have recovery your good to go. I do recommend doing a backup before you flash anything though just in case something goes wrong.

OK..you are rooted and now have recovery CMW 6.0.1.0 which you flashed with ez recovery (all you need to do with that app, you are done with it). At this point just pick a rom that you want...example SynergyROM. All you would do is download the rom and place it on your SD card...I would recommend the extSDCard.
Boot your device into recovery by holding the buttons to do it or just open EZ recovery and hit button 'boot recovery' option only. Find the zip on ext card and that is it...
Always do a backup first which you can do in recovery before flashing the new rom and save that to your ext sdcard also which is an option in 6.0.1.0 after backup then flash new rom
Thank you all for the info

Do we even use Rom Mgr? I think this where I'm making mistakes.
You don't need to use Rom Manager. You have the EZ recovery that flashes a recovery. Rom manager does the exact same thing but EZ recovery makes it simple. Just do what post 3 says and you'll be fine. I just started using EZ recovery 3 days ago and I've already flashed a recovery and a custom kernel. The EZ recovery is only foe flashing recoveries...don't ever try to flash a custom Kernel through it. You can flash custom kernels through CWM Recovery the same way you flash custom rooms, but you need a recovery that supports kexec which would be CWM 6..which is what you have.

[Q] Stuck on what to do after unlocking

I'm pretty confused at the moment. I just unlocked my device using the ASUS app but now I can't find a thread on what to do now so I can start flashing roms. This is what I've gathered so far and correct me if I'm wrong on any of this. So I flash CWM using adb then flash su through recovery then I'm ready to go with stock root without a wipe right?
I'm on version 10.4.4.20 if that helps at all.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using xda app-developers app
The next step after unlocking is to install a custom recovery. If you are already rooted, you can use some app and do it on the device (Goo Manager or ROM Manager?). In any case, you can use fastboot from a PC to flash a blob.
Flashing su is only useful if you don't plan to flash another ROM afterwards.

Nope not already rooted. I'm 100% stock minus the unlocked bootloader. No blobs. I'm really just looking for root permissions on this device, flashing custom roms will come but probably not until Google fixes a few issues with 4.2. I guess what I'm really trying to ask is at this point, do I just fastboot flash the CWM recovery.img, then obtain root privileges by flashing superuser? If it's really that simple this is the easiest device I've ever rooted.

Yes, to root your current stock ROM, that's it.
Ah, almost - the recovery must be in NVidia blob format for the TF700's fastboot implementation. The bootloader only accepts signed blobs for flashing, but after unlocking does not require the signature to match, or even to be actually present.

Do not follow that guide blindly - at least, use a current version of TWRP. Version 2.2 is not compatible with the JB bootloader and may brick your device if you select "wipe data" from the bootloader menu.

Can't Flash CROM 4.1 please help!

I am having problems flashing Clean Inheritance Rom 4.1 and I believe my TWRP 2.4.4.0 may be the problem because it seems corrupted.
I followed the instructions on this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2187982
So far I have been able to flash the patched twrp 2.4.4.0 and install the Asus stock 4.2.1 but every time I try to flash CROM 4.1 twrp will initiate updating partition and then it will just restart w/o warning to its home screen. I think that my twrp may be corrupted but i have used fastboot to repush the twrp multiple times and the asus stock 4.2.1 multiple times but this is not solving my issue. I see that fastboot has a erase command and wanted to know if i would use that to erase the recovery img completely and then try flashing twrp again to see if this resolves the issue or will the erase command brick my device? Also do I need to have my stock kernel for the CROM 4.1 to work? I am attaching screenshot of my tablet info, please let me know if more info is needed or if i need to upload a video of what is going on thanks.
have you redownloaded twrp mate it might have been a dodgy download or maybe a bad download of cromi, or you could try installing cromi 4.0 first

Thanks robgee for the response, I have tried downloading the twrp patch and crom 4.0 and 4.1 but I am still having the same issue. Is there a way to flash CROM 4.1 without using twrp?

Update! bump please help someone
I am still having issues installing clean rom 4.1 but I noticed that if I keep selecting to flash the CROM 4.1 or 4.0 rom it will eventually initiate and let me choose the options and actually start flashing but once it says it is complete and i reboot it does not boot CROM just gets stuck at the asus boot screen. Then i must use fastboot to flash the stock android 4.2.1 to get the thing up and running and then twrp pretty much breaks after i use fastboot to flash teh android 4.2.1 blob file so I have to reflash the patched 2.4.4.0 again. I really do think the problem is with twrp because ever since this new 2.4.4.0 update i have been having issues i remember before twrp was a great utility but now it seems like it is a nightmare is there a way from me to try flashing crom 4.1 with clockwork mod yet?

I was able to flash SuperSU as well
I was able to flash SuperSU and it was confirmed rooted with root checker. I still don't know why CleanROM will not work I have downloaded the ROM multiple times but it just refuses to flash is there something else I need to check in order to flash the rom or is TWRP partially broken where it can only flash very small simple files but not a complete custom rom?
I just downloaded the energy rom and tried to flash it do my device and ended up having the same issue. It says the rom has been flashed and completes but after reboot it is just stuck on Asus bootscreen and never boots into the OS. What the hell is going on
I think my bootloader is somehow screwed up because it can't boot any custom roms it can only boot the asus stock 4.2.1 when i flash the blob file using fastboot. Did i miss a step or something to allow the bootloader to boot custom roms
I don't know if it makes a difference but I used the ww version so it might be worth trying that but not sure how much difference it will make but you never know

Put them anywhere on the sdcard. TWRP lets you select the ZIP file, when selecting "install".
You can even select multiple files into a queue and then flash them in one go.
Be sure to wipe everything from TWRP, including cache, data (factory reset) and system.
Note that this will not wipe the contents of your sdcard (at least the version for BL 4.1 won't).

Just something to take note of is you said that you installed twrp 2.4.4.0, I hope you meant the patched 2.4.4.0 - 4.2 version which is the only compatible twrp version for the 4.2.1 bootloader.
All other version of twrp for the tf300 will ask for password and will not be able to mount partitions which in about 90% of cases will cause the device to brick - fastboot will no longer be able to flash anything http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2179874

Yes that's the guide you want, follow that and you should be fine.
As to the roms you can flash on the 4.2.1 bootloader, you have only the following choices at the moment:
- CROMi-Xenogenesis 4.2 by sbdags, or you can go with the 4.3 beta , up to 4.3b6 at the moment (I'm using b6 now)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2204166
- Energy by NRGZ28, stock or themed versions

[Q] Tab is slow and not smooth enough? Maybe custom ROM?

Hi,
my TF300T has the latest 4.2 factory firmware (10.6.1.27.5). The tablet is rooted but the bootloader is NOT unlocked. Whatever I do the device is still laggy and quite slow. (I already tried factory reset, cold boot, etc.)
I've got the conclusion that I may flash a custom ROM, but similar to the factory one (the tab is used by my wife who doesn't like new systems to learn...)
Any suggestions what to do, which ROM to try?
Thanks in advance!
CROMi-x is a supercharged custom stock Rom you could try.

Am I right thinkig that I have to unlock botloader first before flashing the proper TWRP anyway? Or can I flash the TWRP with locked bootloader too?

No, you must unlock the bootloader first, then flash the correct version of TWRP according to your stock ROM, and then flash CROMi-x and GApps.
