I need wired internet to connect at work, so I was wondering if anyone has tried a usb Ethernet adapter yet. I don't want to buy one without knowing for sure if they work or not, and I figured some people here might have one.
I have a couple of dongles I will try for you tonight when I get home from work.
I don't think this is going to work. They specifically said that USB network adapters are not supported.

No, they said that "We are not offering an ethernet to USB bridge solution for wired scenarios". That doesn't necessarily mean that it won't work, just that Microsoft is not offering one.
But yeah, it's true, maybe it won't work. That's why I want to know before I buy one.
I tried a USB hub / ethernet adapter that I use for my MacBook Air. I think it is made by Kensington. Unfortunately it didn't work. I have another somewhere that I am going to try too. It's disappointing since this should work. I suspect I am going to need to buy a travel router.
Would you mind posting your results here:

Thanks for trying. The travel router unfortunately won't really help me with my work network, though.
Oh well, it was worth a shot.

Sure. I'll find the model number when I get home. Unfortunately, I think this is going to be a universal issue-- no USB networking support at all.
Actually, there is a Microsoft website implies that there are USB ethernet adapters that are WinRT compatible. Maybe I just need a different version. I don't have enough posts to insert a link but if you search for "windows rt compatibility center" (without the quotes) it should come up. It is very possible the site is wrong.

Microsoft's Compatibility Center site lists my Startech USB21000S USB Ethernet adapter as being compatible with Windows RT.
Windows RT recognizes it when I plug it in, and the adapter shows up in Device Manager. But it's still listed as needing a driver. And there's no driver to be found.
Perhaps Microsoft's compatibility list thinks "recognized" is the same as "compatible."
Ok. I stand corrected. USB Ethernet works!
I purchased the "Plugable USB 2.0 Ethernet Adapter" and followed the instructions in their blog. It works great. What's even better is that the same driver now works on my "Kensington USB Mini Dock with Ethernet". It automatically installed the right driver.
See the instructions here:
http://plugable.com/2012/11/16/usb-ethernet-microsoft-surface
The downside is that this could conceivably be disabled by Microsoft.

It very well could be, as Asix has now pulled that driver from its site. The latest update from Plugable says that Microsoft does not allow third-party drivers for Windows RT:
http://plugable.com/2012/10/28/the-windows-rt-and-surface-usb-device-compatibility-story
I can confirm that the 10/200 usb pluggable ethernet adapter works. You need to download the drivers from their site and add it from the device manager. Not too hard or tedious.

Plugable has been asked to stop providing the WinRT USB Ethernet driver to customers, so the download on our website will be going away soon. We'll continue hosting the driver for a bit longer, to support those who have ordered the adapter and haven't installed it yet, but after December 23, the driver will be taken down. For more information, see http://plugable.com/2012/12/11/windows-rt-surface-usb-ethernet-takedown.
After 12/23, we'll continue to sell and support the Plugable USB2-E100 adapter for other platforms, and we'll keep the installation instructions up too.
We really like our Surface, and hope that this situation can be resolved soon, enabling new drivers for this and other USB devices.

I know it's been a month since this thread last had a post. But, I got my Plugable ethernet adapter in today, dug up the RT drivers that M$ 'banned' and it still works. I've done a few Windows Updates (including 1 firmware update) since MS forced the retailers to pull the driver down and it fortunately still works.
Lets hope they don't "Fix" this.

Just curious, did you try using the adapter first without installing the drivers you saved earlier? Since it has been a month since the last post, it is possible the drivers were incorporated into one of the recent Surface RT updates. Maybe I'm wrong, but after reading a lot of the information on the Plugable website a while back, I don't think MS is trying to stop us from adding new hardware, but they're being cautious about releasing the drivers, and they're holding steadfast on not allowing the drivers to be supplied directly from third parties.
You could uninstall the driver from Device Manager and try plugging the adapter in again if you want to check...

Just in case anyone misplaced the driver for pluggable.
I bought this and it works fine

Hi
Recieved my transformer today and after a few hrs with it, I was totally impressed. It is by far the most beautiful tablet I have had. From an ipad, a tmo galaxy tab and the Gtablet, this one is a keeper. A few things:
1. For some reason when the asus is connected to a USB hub attached to my 27" iMac, it would not charge. I had to connect it directy to an AC source.
2. How do I use the "MyNet" feature to gain access to the videos and files on my macintosh? I saw a message about DLNA from the tab, but don't have any idea how to set it up from the Mac.
3. I read that Asus was providing some sort of cloud storage for the transformer, but I cannot locate the info or an app on the tablet so I can take advantage of that feature. Is there a sign-up page for this online storage cloud service?
4. Is there any macintosh software available which would allow me to access the sdcard on the eee pad? I am able to do this via windows from Parallels, but would like to have access also from the Apple side.
5. Which HDMI type cable should I be getting for the Transformer?
6. Is there a short "root" method I can use apart from this one ...
I am not comfortable for this long process to have cwm on the Tab. Will wait for an easier method. Just need root for now.
My unit came fully updated, and software update hasn't found any thing new.
Kudos to Asus for engineering such an awesome tablet.
#1 is easy - USB ports on computers (any computer) only provide about 500mA of current. This is not enough to charge a tablet device. If you look at the output rating of the adapter with your Transformer, it's probably something like 5V, 1800mA.
Simply put - USB ports on computers don't put out enough juice.

I dont think MyNet is compatible with macs, and as was stated in the other posts (and judging from your screenshot), you don't have the latest firmware installed. It's easily updated by using a microsd card though.

I'm thinking the same thing regarding MyNet for Macs. Hopefully there is an update in the future that will bring compatibility to Macs/OSX.
As mentioned before, the current capacity of a usb hub ( or computer usb port is not sufficient to do a good job charging the TF. Also the chips used in most 4 port USB hubs provide two powered ports and two un-powered ports. The un-powered ports can not be used to power anything.

Sorry I don't know enough about macs to give advice on that. All i know is that on the asus site, it doesnt mention mac support at all, which leads me to believe there isn't, nor will there be, any software to make it compatible on the mac.
I guess you could use a windows emulator as a workaround or even install a proper version of it on a partition.

Well the software they provide for windows is indeed a DLNA client/server, so in a sense the mechanics are identical, not to mention you can work with with Ext3 in Mac os (Much faster streamingpotential compared to NTFS). I plan on installing XBMC later today, and I'll post back if there are any issues with HFS+.

As long as you see your dlna server in mynet I don't see why not. Your shares don't show up? That's strange. Because I got a windows xp machine running the windows media player dlna server and I see all my folders. Though my transformer don't support most of the video on my PC...that's a bummer. Need a good video player on this transformer that can play streaming video.

Not quite.
The Transformer PSU puts out 15v at 1.2A on a pin that is normally used by USB3 (Not present at all on USB2)
When plugged into a normal USB2 hub (only 5V) it will charge _very_ slowly and even then only when powered off (not just with the screen off)

If you turn off the screen it will trickle charge very slowly. USB ports aren't providing enough juice to fully charge the TF.

You want to run some sort of DLNA software on the Mac. I use an app called "Playback" on my Mac Mini for DLNA purposes to stream to my Xbox and Epic 4G (when i had one) and Galaxy Tab (when i had one).
3. I read that Asus was providing some sort of cloud storage for the transformer, but I cannot locate the info or an app on the tablet so I can take advantage of that feature. Is there a sign-up page for this online storage cloud service?

Mini HDMI, available for cheap online or for about $29 at your local BestBuy.

Hello,
is there any way to install Windows 8 on this tablet? (when not, in the future?)
lg
This question has been addressed several times. In short, no, there is no way and there won't be a way. Ubuntu is under development for the TF700T though.
No, because its proprietary and will brick your tablet due hardware incompatibly. There is also ArchLinux for the ARM and the Linux kernel will be released for arm soon. This means that at least you will have many more operating systems/ROM's to choose from.

The Linux kernel for ARM has been out for a long time, otherwise Android couldn't exist.
The last time I tried Linux was about 6 years ago. It wasnt ready for non-geeks then and it still isn't now. I tried Ubuntu yesterday. 6 years mind you and it still did not manage to install flawlessly on a brand new unformatted drive on my PC. It still couldn't manage, once I did get it to install, to get a driver installed for a Linksys PCI wireless card. WMP54s have been around for a while...so have Broadcom chips. But I would still like to see what it would be like on a tablet.....

As mentioned many times before all over XDA Microsoft Windows 8 or RT is not a free open source OS.
Even if some clever genius somehow managed to actually do this it certainly would not be a good idea to let Microsoft find out.
I'm almost sure if this was ever cracked and installed on Android powered devices the wrath of MS would be forthcoming.
This is a real can of worms and I believe XDA would do well to forbid this subject in any of the forum sections.
The best option is to buy a device built for and legally preloaded with Windows.
Ah, no, not going to happen.
Besides, if you want W8 on a Transformer, look up "Vivo Tab."

I agree, but its not just that, the source code would be required to make it work on this device. So, its not just that its "not allowed", but that it is not physically compatible. Therefore even if cracked, it would still be of no use.

This has nothing to do with a certain ROM or anything like that, just a general question. Now, I was wondering if my GS3 is connected to WI-FI, and NOT using any mobile carrier data, can it share that connection through USB tethering to a PC or laptop? I've looked everywhere and all people seem to do is share their DATA connection with their devices, and nothing for Wi-Fi. Thanks in advance! -YK
That doesn't make any sense. Wouldn't you just connect your laptop to that same WiFi hotspot?

My bad, I forget to clarify that my PC can't connect to Wi-Fi because it's lacking a wireless card. And just my luck, there are no ethernet ports anywhere.
Then it might be time for a hardware upgrade lol. As for sharing your WiFi connection, I can see it being possible for USB tether, but I have never heard of such a thing. My guess is that there isn't much demand for said feature.

I've known several people who demanded for WiFi tethering, too. All, business related.
To my knowledge, I do not know of a way of succeeding, due to that I've done research myself.
If anything close enough to it, would probably be USB tethering or Bluetooth tethering. But, I haven't tried those personally. Running on CM10.1, which those options are available,
I wanna saw I saw a feature like you're looking for in PDAnet. If you have a few dollars to spare I'd def throw in a PCI Wireless Ethernet Card

54G usb cards run like 10-15, hell you could probably find someone willing to practically give them away on CL
So I searched through forums trying to find an answer before posting this. I didn't see a similar post, unless it was embedded pages deep into a post somewhere i didn't see.
One of my relatives has a galaxy tab 2 7". They don't have any internet access at their home for their desktop pc ( like 5 year old hp running win xp, but they do pay for the 4g on the tablet ). Their work went paperless and they want to print off their check stubs at home ( don't ask me why, I"m not going to argue with them ). So they bought a Kodak wireless printer, I'm trying to figure out how I can print from the tablet to the printer. I had them get a router so I can get the printer on a wireless network, but I'm not sure how to print from the tablet once i get that setup. I'm fairly comfortable with networking stuff, just not so much printing with no internet connection ( if they had internet, i would just have them use cloudprint and chrome, or something similar ).
I know as a last resort I can get a microsd to sd adapter and have them save their paycheck file ( pdf i believe ). then take out the microsd, put in adapter and plug into printer directly and print, or plug the tablet into the printer with usb cable and go through that, but I would like to keep this as simple as possible ( pull up check, click print, done ) if that can be done. ( relatives aren't tech savvy, as you should tell not having any internet at their house )
Any ideas/thoughts/suggestions?
I think the only way to print from a tablet at the moment is with an app. The only way I can print from my tablet his with the hp printing app to print to the hp printer. Hope this helps.

I would search if they have a adapter for the tab2 to be able to plug in a usb adapter. For my Nexus 7 I use a otg cable and I can plug in usb devices but this is only allowed if the kernel supports it. That's the only other thing I can think of at the moment . Hopefully this is useful.

Take note it's not free, I think it costs around US$12. However you can try the free version to see if it can connect to your wireless printer (check compatibility) if I am not wrong.
From what I see, printing is not exactly a simple or easy task on Android as it's not a feature Google planned for?

Hi guys, i wanna buy an used p6800 but for some reason it dosnt support any kind of simkards and i need to use 3G internet on that, is there any solution like using an external 3G dongle for using internet on that?
thanks...
If you have root, you can try PPP Widget. Just add it to your homescreen and give root access.
I personally haven't tried it because have no USB dongle.
Website and FAQ here : http://www.draisberghof.de/android/pppwidget.html
Download here : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.draisberghof.pppwidget
Although their website says Android 3.1 and up, during my kernel development I have seen gitHub source changes for PPP Widget support. The source could be for increasing USB power (edit : supply current mA) for the dongles to work from tab (properly) without an external supply. Can't remember.
Cheers,
UITA

That was possible with the ASUS TF101 as a dev provided a 3G drivers pack for HC but can't remember if this pack is still compatible with ICS (compiled for NVidia Tegra 2 SOC)...
And why Samsung would do this with a device supposed to be 3G ready ???
Then, do you have experience in developing such drivers pack with no USB dongles to test on ???

At least let OP try, and then report back.......
I did make mention of kernel source changes, just couldn't remember exactly what. Seems like a waste of time for a 3G device, but OP sure to have a reason.
Sorry, right now I don't have the time to look into the matter, or even attempt without device or dongle

Of course, let OP buy a 3G USB dongle he won't be able to use it as he won't find any driver and the such, making this USB dongle simply useless...
I guess if he buys a used P6800 with a failed internal 3G part it's because he doesn't have much money to waste.
I already know the literature about 3G USB dongle uses and no need to talk about the OTG capability of the P6800 and the "juice" this device is capable to deliver enough power for the USB dongle...
He will need an unlocked 3G USB dongle with a driver he will have to find and compiled by himself, a precompiled "option" module, a precompiled usb_modeswitch specifically for the Exynos with the big APN database (usb_modeswitch.conf or usb-modeswitch-versions.xml) unless he knows exactly what APN to enter, finally and probably a modified kernel AND a very good tutorial to teach him how to set all this up, including the AT commands and such !!!
And we don't even know if he needs CDMA or HSDPA version depending on the provider and the Sim Card he has or will have, nor in which countries he is living in... ^^
On the other hand I suggested a universal independent self powered 3G WiFi Hotspot Router he could use "out of the box" with any equipments such as smartphones, tablets, PC, for Android or Apple iOS, etc... for his past, present, or future uses...
For the literature about 3G USB dongle uses, start here (just for samples, but Google is your friend including XDA forums of course) :
http://freedune.wordpress.com/2011/06/23/success-with-usb-3g-modems-on-android/
and the well known draisberghof.de website (which also provide the PPP widget for Android), even though this is related to Linux, the principle is the same for Android as all tools have to be recomplied accordingly :
http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/
For the universal self-powered 3G WiFi Hotspot Router, there so many, starting from as low as $16 to over $200 (LTE version) depending of the quality, his needs and the money he can afford to pay for...
Just some suggestions as samples of what is existing on the market... I used Amazon.com to be simple and to offer an idea of what exists, but he may have to use his local retailer depending where OP is living... :
http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Broa...5&sr=8-9&keywords=3G+WiFi+Router+hotspot+cdma
http://www.amazon.com/17597-Unlocke...&keywords=Huawei+E5331+3G+WiFi+Router+hotspot
http://www.amazon.com/Unlocked-ZTE-MF60-GSM-Wireless/dp/B005IDLYK4/ref=pd_sim_sbs_cps_6
http://www.amazon.com/Huawei-E589-Pocket-WiFi-Router/dp/B00ALSYTK8/ref=pd_sim_pc_5
Now, he can make his own decision with the good informations...
EDIT : forgot to mention : whether OP uses a 3G USB Dongle or a 3G WiFi Hotspot Router, he won't be able to place a phone call BUT just for Internet data access, unless stated otherwise... ^^

I see you've replied to the wrong user. ?
I did state that I have no time for the matter (or indeed further interest) I am unable to further assist or suggest.
I'm sure the info will be of use to the OP though.....
Edit: sorry, forgot to hit thanks anyway .cheers

NOPE, the answer was intended to both of you including to OP...
You suggested him to install PPP to be able to use 3G feature (with internal 3G or external 3G USB dongle ???)
I just confirmed YOU it wasn't that simple as I think he misunderstood your first previous answer...

Well you wasted you time with me, sorry. Please read replies more carefully. I KNOW it's not as simple (or probably) as it is, but sometimes you never know with newer firmware what is supported and what is not.... Like external HDD support, just enable in kernel config and compile.
