[Q] Can I remove verizon completely - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
not sure if this has been discussed here or not,
so i have a simple and easy question. I currently use a rooted Verizon 32gb Xoom, with a 4.1.2 CM10 rom installed by Rom Manager.
I do not ever plan to use the Verizon hardware and software in the future, is there a way to completely remove the Verizon software,
so that I can kinda convert this Xoom into a wifi only model ?
Is there a problem doing this that you can think of ?
can I just flash a different modem with cwmr ?
I really despise Verizon and do not want to see the 3g signal meter in the notification panel.
i know it sounds a lil whiney, but i do want to know, what it would take to disable any verizon functionality.
thanks in advance,

Use LAIOT Linux to install Stock MZ604 ROM, then root again and blah blah blah. Else you can try installing AOSP ROM.
Both links on my signature (better saying, 7Heavens have all it and more )
"This Story Ends Where It Began"

I keep mine in airplane mode and just turn on wifi. I never see the 3G icon. I've been doing this for over six months now. I originally did this because I was afraid verizon would try to disable my Xoom. I figured if it never connected to their network that I'd be safe.

I was under impression you could just flash any rom intended for the wifi version and it'll work

This'll work, just flash a wingray rom
Sent from my Blade using Tapatalk 2

I am on a 4G rooted xoom as well that I never use the verizon data. If I were just to install a wingray ROM instead of stingray and keeping in airplane mode, would I be able to expect a increase in battery life?
Possible battery Life increase is the only benefit I see in switching from stingray to wingray.

Well yea you will but then if you want to use wifi it'll defeat the purpose of airplane mode

I just bought a new ($200) 3g version to replace my recently damaged WiFi version. Can I flash a fully stock wingray firmware to it? Or better/safer to just flash a custom wingray ROM?
Thanks.

Sprint's been doing something to the tower closest to my house and I've been permaroamig at my house going on 3 weeks now. Sprint told me it might be a while before they fix the problem. I've been missing calls and they only go through when I force my phone to roam. It sucks because it only happens at my house. lol its happening to my dad's completelt stock shift too so I know its not an issue with my phone. Both of our phones work fine as soon as we switch towers.

Before updating your radios do this:
1) Update profile, reboot phone.
2) Update PRL, reboot phone.
3) If you are not using cellular radio 1.08.01.0111 here is the link:

If your talking about the ones on THIS thread. There is a video in the OP on how to. But if you don't have time, or don't want watch ( although I would suggest you do ) , there are written instructions in the OP. It's always a good idea to read the OP a least once, just in case.

Weak WiFi on jb ROMs?

I have been trying out a few ROMs and it seems the WiFi on the jelly bean ROMs are weak compared to ICS roms. Has anyone had this problem.

I've used Bruce's CM10 builds and recently switching to the official Cyanogen CM10 builds. Last week I tried out Nikez's JB 4.2 AOSP build. I had great wifi on all of them. Like satndin gout in my front yard with the wifi router in the basement in the back of my house good. So it's not the ROM itself. (Though it could be a combination of the ROM and some app or mod you're running)
You might have a weak connection on the wifi anteneas inside the back case of the phone. Take the back cover off, look at the gold pins on the phone, and make sure they are all raised up. You can take a tiny screw driver and pry them up a little more to make sure they are getting good contact with the back cover (which is the antenea). Juts be VERY careful when doing it.
It might not help, but it's a cheap thing to try.
I have tried that too but its strange I can switch to a ICS ROM and I will have full bars in my whole house but with the jelly bean ROMs its one or two bars unless I'm right next to it.

I've got some WiFi tweaks in my kernel that might help. My kernel, Sultan, has the WiFi voltage increased to the max and it has some WiFi signal parameters altered at the kernel level so WiFi networks with weaker signal can be seen. If my kernel doesn't really help then I can build a kernel just for you that forces the system to use the BCM4329 WiFi driver instead of the BCMDHD WiFi driver; that may help. BTW, if you download my kernel then make sure you download the one for Jelly Bean and not the one for Sense.
I tried your kernel and my WiFi is still weak compared to ICS but does seem a little stronger
Sent from my HTC Sensation using xda app-developers app
This is a confirmed issue, its not kernel related, because even with the kernels with improved wifi voltage (which is more voltage than stock), its still a weaker signal than on an ICS based rom.

Is it an issue with proprietary drivers/code or a issue with JB itself?

most users who are S-ON(like me) 4ext has a feature which calls smartflash
before flashing any rom you have to enable smartflash before flashing(if you are S-ON)
and then flash the rom
for S-ON devices it is one way to boot a rom after installation
if you are S-OFF you don't need that feature
So if I'm s off then ext4 isn't really a must have for me

4ext was really buggy for me. 1 of the many bugs I experienced with 4ext was that sometimes after flashing a kernel the phone would get stuck at the HTC screen and I would have t use fastboot to flash a boot.img file in order to get my phone to boot; flashing another kernel in the recovery didn't work and it would still be stuck at the HTC screen -_- If you have S-OFF then use TWRP. Just my 2 cents.

Just curious did you flash a stock T989 ROM onto your skyrocket? any issues? did you use odin?
Also LTE should work with any of the skyrocket modems by default as long as the APNs are correct. There are threads and info on this in the skyrocket forums.
Yeah I flashed a few stock roms on it without Odin, using twrp and infamous wipe/superwipe and without infamous. Although when I did it without the infamous zips about 20% of the time on reboot it would hang on start up which was fine I just reboot and it was good to go. Noticed it hasn't done it since I reflashed with infamous though.
Lte did work just no hspa which is all I get in my town. So I put the stock uvmc6 radio in since 4g sits around 2-7mbs over here and that's more than enough. Heard you can get 2g,4g,lte with some blaze radio's but never cared to try. Only glitch I'd can't find a fix on JB for the screen rotation. It's all wacked out.

Oh most defiantly. There sister phones. But I've tried flashing I'd say about 4 or 5 different ones and no dice. I had the same experience when I did the Big Part modification and installed Omni. No radio. I tried all of the other ROMs for Big Part and only got a signal with EOS 4. With EOS 4 I only had 3G, no LTE. I have been reading about this like crazy, and have seen where people have stated that the custom ROMs made not have the radio built in, but I haven't been able to find out how to add it back or correct my situation. I have seen that other people have stated that they DO have data service after installing Big Part ROMs, so there has to be something we're missing here.
Sorry I don't have a solution. I'm hoping someone with some knowledge on the subject will chime in.

I have continued to look into this, and I just discovered my Xoom is not showing an IMEI number. It is all zeros. You should check and see if you have the same issue. I'm doing research now on how can get the numbers back.

I have continued to seek out the cause of and solution to this problem. Answers from the XDA forums and the internet in general are all over the place as to the cause, but it seems that flashing back to stock is the solution that almost everyone has found success with.
We're in a bind because you can't flash a stock image back onto the BigPart partitioned Xoom. I haven't seen a method to change the Xoom back to it's stock partitions just yet soo... I'm at a loss as to what can be done as of this moment. As soon as someone in the know posts a method to restore the stock partitions I'll flash back to stock and see what happens.

I thought you might be interested. This is apparently what needs to be done to get the stock partitions back on the Xoom. Basically just going through the BigPart procedure again, but replacing the BigPart recovery with the regular one. Some time over the weekend I will probably give it a shot. I have been using my Xoom with EOS and 3G service (not very good 3G service) for a week or so now, but I would really like to get my 4G LTE back. Looks like a lot of Stingray users are having data issues with BigPart roms.

i have installed many rom into my xoom but all of its cannot work (or work very badly), but in almost title of theart about rom isnot show the verson of xoom . can someone show me a stable rom for my verizon xoom.
SR FOR MY ENGLISH.
Honestly, in my experience, if you want a completely stable, fully functional rom for the Stingray, stick with stock. EOS and CM10.1 both randomly lock up on me, and by doing the BigPart partition and moving into the KitKat roms, you run the risk of being in the group that lost data functionality (myself included). If I can find a solution for the data issues myself and others are having on KitKat, I'll post back here, though.

I haven't. I've been bouncing back and forth between EOS4/CM10?1 (both of which have data BigParted, as long as you use the ElementalX kernel) and CM11/Omni 4.4 (neither of which I've been able to get data working on).

I'm sorry I just misunderstood. I have done the same thing... switched back and forth from Omni and CM11 on BigPart, and never had functional data service. I switched back to EOS and I now have 3G data, no LTE. My Xoom shows no IMEI number. I'm assuming the same thing is going on with yours? I've been reading up trying to figure out how to flash back to stock because the internet in general seems to agree that method is the only way to restore a lost IMEI. I'm going to try it this weekend if I have time.

Using either the testing menu or the LTE On/Off app, I'm able to get my IMEI back on EOS, CM10.1, Omni, and CM11; however, I still can't get 4G on EOS or CM10.1 and I can't get any data on Omni or CM11. If you want to go back to stock, you'll need to undo the BigPart first. To do that, just follow the steps to BigPart it, but in the first step, flash the regular RAH TWRP and not the BigPart one. From there, I'm not entirely sure. I'll do some research and post another reply if I find anything.

Any rom that says "Stingray" in the title of the thread will work. There are several of them in the Xoom Android Development forum. Just be careful you don't try to install a rom that says BigPart unless you do the BigPart repartition.
