[Q] Looking for custom notification sounds for Android (spoken messages) - General Questions and Answers

I am looking for a listing of notification sounds/ringtones for Android; in particular I am looking not for music/beeps/tones but actual spoken messages. (For example, a butler-like recording of "You have an incoming message, Sir" in British accent or such). If anyone can suggest some places to look for those, I'd appreciate it, it seems that my google-fu skills are failing me in this quest. Thanks!
(If this is not the right forum to ask this question, please let me know where should I ask)

It seems like a UI app, but I have no need for a UI app to make selection easier. What I am looking for is something with a bunch of voice sound bites.

It's got everything. Look through the categories you're interested in, save the ones you like, then uninstall the app.

Is there a way, or someone that wants to do this mod?!!!!! Notification Sound in Call

One thing I have wanted on this phone since I got it is to be able to know when a text message or other notification comes through while in a call. Like a short beep or something similar to the sound the G1 makes when the battery is low. I am not a huge coder, but love toying around with my rooted G1. Any takers? Anyone want to do this? Anyone else been wanting this??? Thanks for all who view this thread.
I think Handcent sms has this feature but we are still missing gmail and other notifications
Maybe someone can get this done, this is one of the few things that has bothered me about my g1 since I got it.
I know this isn't the place to ask, but a way to have the keyboard along with the face buttons stay lit until the keys lock would be the best thing. It's annoying to move the trackball every time to just get those buttons to light up every time.
Unless there is a way and I've just missed it every time.

Obviously you people aren't READING THE WHOLE THREAD.
We are aware that Handcent covers SMS/MMS notifications in voice calls, but what about gtalk, gmail, facebook, MSN, ect.
As far as I can gather, Handcent DOESN'T do this.
The OP is asking for someone to see if it's possible to modify the Phone.apk to include this. All of you "Members" and "Senior Members" need to get off your high horses, if you're true senior members (likely not the case as most of your post counts probably come from slamming people who "DO EVERYTHING WRONG!!!") remember the days when the Android section of this forum was still relatively young, everybody helped everybody, regardless of how unusual or stupid their questions seemed. These days if you're not 100% perfect in your initial post, you get slammed. Leading to more completely useless posts from all of you "Senior Members" that are taking up EVEN MORE space with useless drivel that's EVEN MORE useless than the OP.
I personally think this is a great idea, and whole heartedly support it, if I had the slightest idea how this is done, I would be on it right away.
Also, before anybody slams me for being wrong, I have never used Handcent for my SMS handler because I prefer the modified one that comes with my CM build, but if it DOES allow notifications for ALL APPS through calls, it could have saved a great deal of time to mention that.
This gets my support as well. I dont like Handcent. So if we can make it work with the standard APK, it will be awesome. I have asked around, for it to work, its not the Phone.apk that needs to be modified, its the .apk that giving out the notification that has to be modified. example is
for sms/mms, the mms.apk needs to be modified to check the phone status, and give out the correct sound notification. (not in call, use selected sound clip from external speakers; in call, use small beep sound in the ear speaker.)
same goes for gtalk, gmail, twidroid and any other apps that have notification.

Good to see some serious input here finally, depressing to know it would have to be handled by the corresponding application, being as some of them are off limits (gtalk/gmail/ect).
At least someone still has their head on straight here.

I'm sorry. I usually post something constructive, but this kind of crap makes me mad.
Why does it bother you that he had more than one question? How can you even complain about that? Uh oh, I just used 2, I probably have a "metal disorder" too, huh? You know what people accomplish by asking questions? They learn things. Yes sir, it is people like YOU, who don't ask questions or even make the slightest attempt to educate themselves, who shouldn't be "allowed to breed." When people like you breed, we get thick skulled smart-asses who think they're tough on the internet.
P.S. You used 7 extra periods that weren't needed. Your first sentence was a fragment. You used one capital letter. You used the wrong form of it's the first time. You used the wrong form of you're. You forgot a period after retard. It's supposed to be "mental" disorders. You used an ellipses incorrectly. You used "where" instead of "were."
P.P.S. His sentence wasn't even a fragment (I'm assuming you mean't "typed" instead of "type"). "I'm an idiot," says Mr. Grammer and Punctuation. There you go. Stop trying to be a hero for the board, that is the mods job. You saying "OMG RONG [email protected][email protected]!!" isn't helping a thing, considering 90% of people who post in the wrong thread just post one time. Especially when there are people before you that have pointed this out. I know it gives you an ego boost, but seriously, keep it in your pants. You are the one filling xda with garbage, not the people who have a question about a feature they would like to see implemented on their phone.
Thanks for bearing with me, everyone else.
Stefan, find something better to do than insult people in a forum. Next time you see something in the wrong place and someone has acknowledged it, I dare you to just skip over it.
I was going to delete this as well but it makes my point so much easier to make and its not a flame post or very hostile.

Obviously, you're not reading the whole thread, bro. We are putting suggestions out. So what if we miss two words? You're complaining about something that's not happening. We're still TRYING to help.
But, back on topic. Now that I know this, I support. Would be quite useful, as I have it set so apps get killed on screen off and it seems everytime I press "End" on a call, it goes blank and only thing that keeps me knowing I even have a sms is "Sms unread count" widget.

I do sometimes, especially when coordinating stuff with a few people. It will be something like talking to someone, then getting a text to update me on information to relay to the person I am talking to. Stuff like that.
Other times its just an compulsive need to reply text as soon as it comes in.
Also, another reason why you need to know if a text comes in while in a call : having 2 girlfriend. (not that I have 2 anyway)

you can with handcent i believe...it does it with vibrate or sound in call...
I have the TTSnotifier app and it will announce the callers name, if they are in my contacts, from call waiting. I also have it set to notify me of incoming texts as well. Doesn't work with email though. You will need the text to speech app from the market for it to work. You can customize the announcements. Hope maybe this will help. Can't remember where I got it from but I can e-mail it to you. [email protected]

Just emailed you.... I don't care if I don't get my texts or email but the absence of "call waiting" notification has been driving me nuts... to the point of really thinking of getting rid of G1. I mean, this is so basic, we shouldn't have to find workarounds just to enable this. If that app does that... it would be like a gift from heaven.

Text Messenger - The Text Message Away Message

Hey all, I'm new here but was looking for an outlet to announce applications. I have just finished up my first Android App and was hoping for some reviews/comments/suggestions. Criticism Encouraged!
Text Messenger is a simple away message application for your Android phone. There is a full version for $1, and a DEMO version (where you cannot change the default away message) for FREE.
Give it a try, then give it a Buy!
EDIT: updated barcodes to go directly to Android Market, rather than through AndroidZoom.
Just checking in to see if anyone had a chance to review my app, and had any comments/suggestions/criticism?
To make it easier to find I will post some barcodes (DEMO and Full Version) for the apps.
Thanks.

Don't mean to be mean, but don't people take a non-reply to mean that the recipient is away/busy ?
I can't test this because I use gvoice for texting.

That's alright, I know this isn't for everyone. With the current state of texting, especially with the younger crowd, I have seen many instances where people say "What the [email protected]#$ why aren't they texting me back!!!"...I guess this is more for those types.
Also, I find myself in situations where I really should not be reading/responding to text messages but I end up giving in knowing there is a message. With Text Messenger you can set your Away Message and automatically put your phone on silent at the same time. So when I am driving, in class, or anywhere else where I shouldn't be answering a text I do not feel the urge.
Pretty cool - few suggestions
Hey, just checked out the demo version of the app. I'm a brand new Android user. Coming from windows mobile I needed an app like this. Just a few thoughts as to what would make this an even better app. These are just suggestions and ways that I would like to be able to use the app.
1. Allow for profiles to be set up. Such as during certain user defined times, the app automatically sets an away status.
2. Allow for away statuses to be enable for specific contacts, like a black/white list.
3. Set up a quick reply list so I can select from some predefined messages such as "Call if it's an emergency", "In class"...
Keep us updated...
Nice app by the way

I do not know why you would not be able to find my app? Did you try scanning the barcodes I supplied? Do you have Android 2.2?
Anyways, I attached the apk for the DEMO Version of the app. In this version you can not change the away message, but if you purchase the full version for $1 USD the away message is completely customizable.
Thank you for the interest in my app!

Thanks for trying out my app.
I plan on adding a customizable list of away messages, so you can easily set "In class" etc...look for that update soon.
The Black List & Scheduled away messages are a great idea, although the initial decision creating the app was to make it as simple and quick as possible. Adding these features would be great, but also add more complication. I suppose there is no harm in adding these as optional features though, since if people wanted a quick easy solution they could simply not enable them.
I will keep you updated on the changes coming, look for your #1 to definitely be added with the possibility of #2 and/or #3.
Thanks again for trying my app, and leaving feedback!
P.S. Anyone else that has tried the app it would be great if you could rate it on the Android Market. Only a few people have rated it/commented, and I know many more have given it a try.
I like the demo app. I would like to try the full version but don't see it on the Market. I tried the posted barcode and it never loads the link in the browser.
Thanks,
I downloaded the donation version to be able to say what I want. What an awesome application. I can easily say one of my top 5 most useful. I set it when I'm driving, in a meeting, flying (in the air force) or when I'm busy with a million other things. Here is my list of features I would love to see, forgive me for any duplicates from any other post;
1. A widget! One that when pressed will turn on the auto reply AND have a drop down list of saves/pre-made responses.
2. Option to turn off notification bar icon, I hate that big green booger on my minimalist bar.
3. Option to save messages for future use through a quicky list
4. Option to have messages be contact specific (I would love to see this and would justify a higher price as it would make this an essential app, on par with SetCPU!)
5. Lastly, some notification of auto reply being sent, I'm currently not seeing one on my phone.

Thanks for giving it a try. If you press the menu button when in the DEMO Version there should be an option for "More Apps" this will bring you to the Android Market where you can see the FULL Version. I also attached a different barcode, this should link directly to the market rather than through AndroidZoom...let me know if that works for you? Otherwise just search "Robott Creations" or "Text Messenger" on the Android Market.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have heard more than once the need for customizable preset messages & option to turn off the notification "booger". I look to add those features this week. The rest of the suggestions I also agree with, and will hopefully work them in. I was looking to keep the app extremely simple, but the feedback so far has made it sound like the app is "too simple".

I am not too familiar with the Belgium Android Community, but it sounded like you said you are unable to buy any apps? If so, I do not know what I can do about that. But I will look into comparability for Android 1.6.
Thanks everyone, the feedback I have been getting has been excellent. I look to add some of these features shortly and supply you with exactly what you are looking for.
Version 1.5 Released
I read all the suggestions, and am trying to get them in ASAP.
Here are some features to hold you over until the next Update.
New to Version 1.5
------------------
* Custom preset Away Messages
- Easy interaction via Context Menu
* Enable/Disable Notifications
* Text Forwarding (Currently only supports other Phone #s)
* Minor Cosmetic Fixes
More Updates Coming Soon!
I hope the Android 1.6 support will be there soon. Such a lovely app ...

Both depend on the support of the project. Currently I have been hearing good feedback, but the number of downloads does not assure me it would be worth the time of creating an Android 1.6 version and/or porting to Windows Mobile.
I am currently working towards Version 2.0, and after that I will investigate porting and 1.6 support.
Thank you both for showing interest.
Any way of choosing which Apps this works with, as just had it in a weird loop on my facebook status. As I have fb notifacations sent to my mobile via texts, its put all away messages on my facebook, then as I had a new post, got sent a new text, which then triggered another away message...... Turned it off for now, but really good and usefull app, if you can have it only work with chosen apps. Like Handcent only.

[Q] The "Reply All" function in SMS.

Sorry in advance if this has specifically been addressed. Doing a quick search didn't seem to cover it.
Is it possible for the experts here in XDA to write something into Android's code to allow for a Reply All feature in SMS, like in iPhone's SMS? I'm thinking the Reply All feature must be unfixable because there is conversations all over the internet for people requesting Google to fix it. Some have even stayed with Apple because they would miss that feature too much.
And why you're at it, build in emoticons. The emoticons are only available in 3rd party apps, like GoSMS Pro and Handcent, as far as I know.

Addressing the second question here...
Which emoticons are you referring to? You can already use all the regular emotes in an SMS. ;-)
You might want to take a look at alernative keyboards to make your emoticon chatting a little easier (swiftkey has quick buttons for emotes, for example).

This is not the place to request features. if what you are looking for is in gosms, use it. Not to come off as a d*ck but this isnt burger king, they dont have your rom your way right away.
If you were find code that would be usable for this feature, it would be a better way to present your request.
Ranting aside, i believe gosms also has the reply all feature if im not mistaken. Im not sure as i dont have an iphone to compare with. But i do use gosms as my sms replacement.

First off, I'm not requesting anything special in a ROM. My question was that if any of the bright developers have the knowledge to incorporate some of the emoticons into stock mms. Perhaps I should have stated emoji and not emoticons. The ones I'm referring to ARE the ones you find in GoSMS and Handcent, but it would be nice to just use the stock app instead of a 3rd party app to be able to get those. The ones those replying above are referring to basic emoticons (I know, I probably was asking for the wrong things) that can be type in using symbols. I too have been using GoSms and Handcent for the past 2 1/2 years and know that the Reply All feature in GoSMS will respond to all, but send out individual messages, thus breaking the conversation.
Maybe iPhone uses a code that isn't native to Android because I know those 2 platforms steal all they can from each other as it is.

By the way, where would YOU request features? There doesn't seem to be a dedicated forum for that and you're implying there is a place if this isn't it.

I don't personally because i know well what the devs go through to get a rom out and be proud of it just to hear 'well can you do this?'. The best place would be a specific roms Q/A thread, because if you post in general then lets say optimistically 3 rom developers add the feature for you, you are only going to use one rom, thus 2 of the devs just wasted their time. Also it is far easier to just get an app that does what you want instead of bloating up android with moogly eye faces. Android after all is extremely modular and is all just a collection of apps. so asking to 'build in' is really just modifying an app so you dont have to spend 30secs to download one. like i said, if gosms does what you want, download it. because being that bloaty isnt for everyone so its easier to just leave it stock and let users download what they want to add to their phones.

might also work better since you are looking for features that would not be phone specific.

Thanks for the link. I'll post my Reply All question over there and see if I get any responses.

How to change WhatsApp open-chat notification tone?

Hello, I've done quite a bit of searching, both on xda-developers and in the web at large (including the Xposed repository), but couldn't find a solution. Here's my question.
It's easy enough to change WhatsApp's notification sound, but it seems impossible to change the soft notification sound that announces a new message in an open chat. Apparently, this sound is the same on all phones, so when one person in a room gets a message, all people in the room hurry to check their WhatsApp. Is there a way to change THAT sound? It must be hardcoded, but perhaps I could replace the soundfile itself? I was hoping there would be some Xposed module to take care of this, but I couldn't find anything. Anyone here knows how to deal with this nuisance?
Thanks for reading this far. Any help will be welcome

Anyone know if custom message tones are possible?

Want to get my geeky trek communicator sound as my notification sound
Yes, there are quite a few apps in the galaxy store when you go to it through the gear manager. Some say you need a compatible app installed on your phone but that's not a problem I assume.
Odd, I still can't see any. Looked in all the categories for something. Either I'm dumb (quite possible), or blind.
Do you have a name of one so I can try a search? Searching for tones brings up nothing. Should I be searching for a gear app or a Galaxy app?
Thanks.

Just search "sound" without quotes, should work for you.
