[Q] Unable to locate internal sdcard error

Hello All,
I wanted to post this to the Android Development section but since I have fewer than 10 posts I am forbidden from doing so.
Intermittently I will notice some apps do not load images or act as they normally should, and upon opening Solid Explorer to do some investigation I receive an error message (Cannnot browse to "/mnt/sdcard". An unknown error occured.). I find I am unable to access the internal sdcard through Solid Explorer, and when navigating using Root Explorer it only displays an empty folder.
This seems to happen at least once a day, and restarting my phone usually fixes it at least for a few hours. Sometimes ending all applications through task manager & clearing RAM memory through RAM manager will allow me to normally browse my internal sdcard using Solid Explorer for about a minute or so, and then become unaccessable again. Phone reboots seem to be the only fix, albeit a temporary one that only lasts a few hours.
I am unable to save screenshots when this occurs, unable to save pictures, some apps do not function properly -- all which makes sense if the phone is really unable to access the internal sdcard. I have performed numerous wipes (full wipe, cache, dalvik) & reinstalled newer nightly SynergyROMs but I have been unable to fix the issue. Searching these forums has not brought me any relevant information which pertains to the same issue I am having.
I appreciate any help or insight you guys can provide, thanks for taking a look.

Why would you think to post this in Android Development? This is a question, and thus belongs in Q/A (where it is posted). Android Development is for people who actually developed something, like a ROM, Kernel, etc.
I don't know what kind of advice to give you though, besides try formatting in advanced options of CWM, a reprovision (*2767*3855# ) on stock (back up everything first, to somewhere other than internal SD as it will be wiped) or maybe a 32GB PIT, with a PIT being the least likely solution.

I logged in today because I am having the exact same problem. Same ROM as well, Synergy r73. I've tried formatting the SDCard, tried a complete reformat of the phone. But nothing seems to help.
Also, to clarify, it isn't restricted to the external SD card (which mounts to /mnt/etxSDcard folder). It's the entire /mnt directory that hangs. I'm able to go into options and mount and unmount the external card fine. But as soon as I try and access /mnt using any app (andExplorer, Wifi File Explorer, even a simple 'ls' in terminal) the phone hangs, stops responding to button presses, and eventually reboots itself.
Also, I've found my timing matches Kenshingtx's as well. If I reboot the phone, I can access external storage, and the entire /mnt folder for that matter, just fine, and it stays this way for about an hour or so.
Any further ideas are greatly appreciated.
btw, I think he mentioned posting the Android dev because there is a thread specifically dedicated to this ROM with numerous questions and answers in it. (Albeit hard to follow since it's over 800 pages) I already searched in there and found no mention of this issue.

The SD card problem sounds like something that used to happen with the old modems.
Go to about phone and check your baseband. If it doesn't end in G7 or HD then you have an older radio that had this issue.
Here's a link to where you can get what you need that explains everything better then I could.

My phone has the G7 modem in it.

Thanks for everyone's input so far. My baseband ends in F2 so I'll try updating my modem and see what that does (even though nerfage seems to be having the same problem with the G7 modem). And you're right, I wanted to post in the synergyROM development thread thinking the problem might've been specific to that ROM.
I'll also look into reprovisioning on stock rom per Zalithian's suggestion to wipe the internal sd card, and see if that helps.

@nerfage - I dunno what the problem is then, could be ROM specific. If you figure out what's wrong post how you fixed it here. You may also want to try flashing the HD rom. Might fix it, might not.
@Kenshingtx - Not sure if the wipe would help so make sure that's an absolutely final thing, googling around is always useful. Hopefully the flash thing does the trick though.

Flashed the latest modem ending in HD, and tested my phone over the weekend. Still having the same issue where the internalsd becomes unavailable. Wondering if the hardware in our devices are faulty..?

My phone appears to be fixed. I backed up all the files on my mnt/sdcard, performed full/cache/dalvik wipes, formatted internal memory through recovery, flashed the rom again (decided to try Beans ROM this past week) and I haven't had the same issue come back. It looks like the cause of the problem was something on my internalsd, try formatting it (after backing up any files you need) to see if it'll fix the problem for you too. Good luck.
Note: the fix does not appear to be related to the ROM, i was having the same issue on the Beans ROM as well until I formatted the internal memory

Hi
I am using the LC-Power MIRA-1 10" Tablet
The newest version available (4.0.4) is installed, it is pre-rooted.
I did not install ANY custom mods and the system itself is not heavily modified.
It has 8GB internal memory, which is split into two "partitions"
internal memory ~1,25GB (probably / )
internal memory ~5,5GB (/sdcard and /mnt/sdcard)
my actual sd-card ist mounted under /mnt/extsd
I could not find any setting which lets me decide where to install apps.
now, when i try installing certain apps from google play i get the "Couldn't install on USB storage or SD Card" error. Now matter how many times I try. Not all apps are afflicted by this, only some (like "Labyrinth!” von OPENA)
I've googled and searched this forum.
I tried all fixes I could find:
- delete the hidden smdl2tmp1.asec file - file did not exist
- unmount the sd-card prior to installing the app - if I unmount my actual sd-card it will unmount /mnt/extsd and did not help
- deleting all google play data - did not help
- rebooting - did not help
I do know a bit about android and linux but not enought to find the problem by myself. why does this happen? where are the logs (and what are the names) where we could find some answers?
my guess right now is that it probably is a combination between my (i believe) strange partitioning/mounting of the available storage, the app itself and the higher probability of apps not working 100% if they are to be installed on sd-cards.
to be clear, i am not trying to install the app on the sdcard. infact, i dont even know where i could try to determine where the app is going to be installed to. but i have heard multiple times that installing apps on sd-cards can lead to trouble. I am uncertain if that is because real sd-cards may be removed now and then or if it is the mount-point that leads to trouble (/sdcard)
but ill be honest. i dont have a clue and am just guessing here!
any help and hints will be appreciated.

update:
the lc-power support was less than helpfull. short summary:
"can't guarantee all apps work, some do, some dont. probably their fault. cant help and oh btw. soon update to 4.1 so it might be fixed there..."
so of course i am looking forward to 4.1 and hopefull it will fix my problem.
but to be honest, i can not believe so many well known games refuse to install and that this can not be fixed.
anyway, earlier today i also tried to set pm setInstallLocation 1 (from 0), it did not help...

Just rooted my new 3110, successfully .......(or so I thought) . Now I cannot install anything on internal SD. Whenever I try, I get "not enough space" error message - even the 2 apps(only had the tab 3 days)! that were on the sd before I rooted, have mysteriously moved to phone memory. I cant even install FolderMount , which I had already d/l. Forgive a newbie, but having rooted my Galaxy W phone 18 months ago with very few problems, was hoping tab would be as reliable. Anyone help? (as I dont want to unroot just to be able to use internal sd memory.) Thanks in anticipation.

I'm confused, how did you get apps to run on your external SD without root? Didn't know that was possible. Did you try clearing the dalvic cache? Seemed to do the trick when i had issues with lucky patcher causing that same error. I may be way off base though.
Edit: i think I'm confused, sorry, that advice is surely off. Uhm, perhaps reflashing stock and trying again,seeing as how you do not have much data to loose, using the auto root Odin flashable file.

...........Thanks for the help.. Wasnt talking about ExtSdcard, but sdcard0, the internal storage -,sorry for confusion-. Although "Install manager" shows all apps as being installed on "phone" memory, & "external" memory empty, both "Disk Usage" & "Root Explorer" show the same files/size used, in both locations, so I now figure I may have partition problems after rooting (I used this system : http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1596) Will try the auto method as per your link if I cant solve the issue (though hoping a quick fix might be possible.!) Still "not enough space" issues.
Ok. I tried wiping data, flashing back to stock rom, then chainfires auto - root method. All went well - device rooted (again!) fine, BUT I`m STILL having problems with storage. Some apps (especially games) wont install - am getting "not enough space" message, just as before. It seems that all apps that need to be intalled on the devices internal "sd" (such as" FileMount") card just wont.
Please forgive a couple of lame questions, but having never owned a tab before, I`m new to their "vagaries" - Also I have searched here & other online forums for an answer, so forgive my badgering all you "fonts of tekkie wisdom."

Mine is the 8gb model, & I know a lot of this is taken up by system/ram etc - the "device memory" reports a total of 4.49gb, but TB (& other root apps like sd maid) states : Rom 1.26 gb, internal 4.92GB, sd card 4.82gb (with exactly the same space used in both , i.e. 1.50gb. I also have 32gb micro sd inserted. - Is there an internal partition for the "sdcard0" space , or it there a "physical" internal sd card ? If so how do I format thhis? If not could I have a partition problem? (The reason I ask is that none of the "move to sd" apps I have tried like app2sd, install manager etc work - They state, apps have moved when they clearly havent.

do a simple thing! factory reset your tab. click format sd ! these issues are solved just by formatting the sd, be it internal! :good::good:

Its a partition, its an emulated SD card. I think the post above me has the right idea.
Also, none of those apps will work. You will need use a sdcard swap script, gl2sd(app), foldermount, or some root app or script that is similar to those.
I think you will need a custom recovery, (like cwm, or twrp) to format the internal "sdcard", i never really used the stock recovery much, but it seems like an option they would leave out. I think there is an oden flashable in developer section. I would find links for you, but i got to get the kids ready. Shouldn't be hard to find.
If you can not format the internal SD using stock recovery, here is a link to the Odin flash able cwm.
PS. I really do not think it is a partition prob., and i wouldn't click the repartition option.

OK Folks - seems I have fixed the problem, by uninstalling all apps (inc "moving" apps) that dont work or are "buggy" , cleaning/wiping caches/data, then I was able to install FolderMount from here, and now all the instability/storage problems gone. (Am so impressed with FolderMount have bought pro, as I am a bit windy when in comes to T.E`s or running scripts! My 32gb is filling fast enough anyway!)

Cool, glad to hear it. I love foldermount. After weeks of searching, that app/dev came to the rescue, it is well worth buying pro!

Using your file manager go to( /data/log/) you will need to do this as root. In that folder you will probably find a bunch of dump files which are eating up your space. Delete the dump files. I personally changed the permission to read only and never had that problem again

I too am having this problem. I viewed the location suggested using CoolMuster Android Assist program. I only had the trial version son so I'm having to buy the full version to actually delete these dump files. I had only 4 files, but they are rather large. Being a novice at this Android stuff, I have a dumb question. How do you interpret the storage information in the phone settings? I'm seeing that my phone has almost 2 GB of "device" storage, a little over 11.2 GB of "usb" storage and I have a 16 GB SD card. I have moved all possible apps, pictures, videos, etc. to the SD card and phone shows there is almost 10 GB of free usb space. Therefore, I don't understand how I can keep getting these insufficient memory messages when I try to download new apps or even when I try to update existing apps.

Hi I have a question about my rooted Alcatel One Touch Pop Astro Model 50042T. First off I have rooted phones and tablets and moded gaming systems so I have a general-intermediate understanding of the process of rooting but I'm pretty much lost after that. (Also I do NOT have ready access to a PC for the time being.)
So my main concern is that my phone should have 4gb of internal storage and it is only showing that I have 1.80gb!! I know that there are partitions or divvied space that are hidden or you need special permissions to edit. Is that the USB storage? If I'm wrong about that sorry, please correct me.
So my question is how do I reorganize, modify, or even delete hidden partitions? Anything to return my phones visible 1.80gb of storage to the original 4gb? I just need to be able to access it again to install apps on it. If the whole 4gb is impossible, can I get it back to the 3.7-3.8gb that was available when I first purchased it? Please help!!​
Im not sure its completely rooted. Im running king root version 4.9.6 and Purify version 1.5.2.159 and I might have installed a custom ROM or kernel but I'm not entirely sure. I got the pphone approximately 3-4 months ago and I rooted it the same night. And I tried multiple versions of king root and other apps and eventually my phone storage disappeared.
•I would install a root checker if I had enough space.
•I used purify to get rid of apps that I figured were bloatware but I still only have 43.82mb available
•I have transferred every app to the SD card that can be stored there.(If there is way to store system apps and apps that usually can't be stored on external SD I would like to know.)
•Im sorry this is my second post of this. I'm really not sure if I posted this in the right place the first time.
