I understand w8 is supposed to one is for all, but how about a section just for w8 devs / apps for the surface? I'm assuming this is going to be mostly PRO versions of the device, given the shortcomings of the arm version.
thoughts?
There was a full Surface section and now its just under the Winodws 8 section
What happened?
Hacks for Win RT or Surface RT can go under Win8 dev forum, or here. I think any additional forum would depend on how active the development community will be for Surface. It wastes resources, and makes XDA look bad in the bargain, if created forums become ghost towns--to wit, the Kindle Fire HD dev forums.

I see your point. My thinking was if any deving happens on the surface would disappear in the w8 dev section, quick.
Short of things related to the hardware, there's nothing about Surface RT that's not relevant to other Windows RT devices, and nothing about Surface Pro that's not relevant to Win8 tablets in general. I actually think what we need is more WIn8 forums, rather than more Surface forums. For example, one forum specifically devoted to dev & hacking on RT, where stuff like the work to get around the third-party desktop app restriction would go, and one forum for general Metro-style development, where people could post beta (or homebrew, non-store) versions of their apps, ask for advice or translations, etc. Currently there's just General (which is almost all Q&A, much of it quite basic stuff) and then the dev&hacking forum for all of Win8 (and by extension Windows RT) which covers everything from Store apps to registry tweaks.

Disclaimer: This post should be read in a "suggestive" tone, not a "complainy" tone.
This forum is called "Dream android development," but it seems like most of the posts are not really related to Android development, but rather Dream/Android hacking.
It might be more helpful for everyone to easily find what they are looking if a separate Dream forum were created called "Dream Hacking" and all these hacking-related posts moved there... and then this forum could be dedicated to development (OS/ROM/application development, coding, etc.).
There are several forums dedicated to Android Development (like anddev.org and the dev forum at talkandroid.com), but I like xda-developers for all my HTC-related development forum needs!
Thoughts?
Also, because I'm in the Dream Android Development forum I suppose I ought to post something about Android Development... does anyone have any suggestions or experience on implementing a Trial Period feature in an Android app? I could write a date to a file that marks the first time the user runs the app, and then check that date on every run to see if they are past their trial period end date. But what's to stop the user from uninstalling and reinstalling, to get a new install date and trial period?

I definitely agree. Splitting development and hacking into two forums makes sense. Let's move all the rooting threads over to a new hacking forum and keep the discussion of application development here.
I believe XDA uses development as the PC word for hacking if you look at all of the other forums that do the same thing this thread does for other OS it is called development which really is what is done in this thread as no one is really hacking per say because it is all open source.
Also, who is going to go through 60 pages of threads and move the relevant ones to a new subforum?
Sounds like a good idea, but I have to agree with Plastriq.
If I was a mod, I definitely would not want to go through and re-organize a whole subforum and split it up, when it already worked well enough for the everyday user to be okay with it...
I'm pretty sure the moderators here feel somewhat the same.
I made the suggestion to the admins. I will send them over here. I agree we need another forum... however I think one forum should be for help and one for development/hacking while keeping the dream forum for news/info and the other forums for their intended purpose.
Maybe one could be for Android development or Android Modification and one could be for Android Application development.
I like the idea of splitting this section.

Okay, then how about renaming this thread to "Dream Android Modification" (or Hacking... and even though it's open source, most of it is still hacking... because Google doesn't explicitly allow rooting, flashing the ROM, etc. on non-Dev Phone 1's).
Then create a new forum called Android Development, and give it a higher priority/level... because there will be several Android devices in the near future besides the Dream, and we don't need an Android Development forum for each individual device.

They're still left with the problem of moving all of the current development threads into the new forum... :/
You do have a point though, sooner or later there will be different Android devices. Cleaning up the forums, as daunting a task as it might be right now, will be better than waiting until later when it ABSOLUTELY NEEDS to happen and they're more overloaded.
As said I would have no problem cleaning them up and have asked in the staff forums.
If any of you would like to help once the forums are made just shoot me a PM with all the threads that should be moved and I will move them even faster.
Is there a tablet general section?
I would like to search about the tablets overall but don't want to keep digging in the general section..
no, sorry, XDA only has general, OS, and specific device forums.
you can go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/filter.php?cat=Tablet to see all forums for specific tablets.
Why is the iPhone the top phone in the forum list and not the HD2?
This is purely a question and in no way meant to start some kind of crazy "Which is the best phone" argument that can be found all over this forum. I just find it ironic for an anti Apple community. Or is that the point, showing off what we don't aspire to be?
If anybody knows I'm interested.

what list?

Because XDA is not really meant for the Iphone, but they had to include it somewhere. And its not really the phone specifically. It is for IOS. So if you look at the forum list, it goes Android, Windows Mobile, WP7, then IOS. Below that is when it starts going into actual devices.

Please note: title should read: "Roku HD Development." Not sure what happened there.
Hello all,
After a recent Roku HD purchase, I began thinking about potential underdevelopment for this device. Since they encourage development via the Roku SDK (Sorry, I cannot post links yet), I'd bet that creating an XDA channel to air among other thing, XDA-TV could have far reaching effects. Additionally, as far as I have seen thus far, nobody has uncovered a way to develop a quality Internet channel to enable functional web browsing. For my purposes, I'd like to steam webcasts offered on a website. One of my favorite web casts is currently underway and without a Roku, I'm confided to my Amaze.
Any thoughts?

Understood. I intended it to me more of a discussion about the potential to undertake such a project rather than a simple question. Hopefully i can shake the green or "noob" fairly quick.
Back to the aforementioned topic, I wonder if it's possible to get the market up on this device. Talk about cool!

I'm sorry if these questions are in the wrong place and/or covered in other places... feel free to scold and educate me as necessary.
1: I've been using XDA for a while, and never seen the "Cross Development" forums until recently (specifically the OnePlus devices). What exactly is the difference between Development and Cross-Development. Is the "cross" referring cross-device, cross-nationality, cross-team, or the more ubiquitous form, cross-platform?
(I'm assuming it means cross-device, i.e. the 8 (non pro) x 8 Pro devices, or in the case of the 7, the 7 x 7t, x 7pro x 7t Pro).
2: If my assumption about cross-device is correct, why is this separation of forums necessary? If the roms, bootloader, etc are cross-compatible... isn't this separation superfluous?
Again, sorry if this is a very ignorant question... asking because I want to educate myself.

Your assumption is indeed correct, it means cross-device i.e. the published code (ROM's, kernel, mods etc.) are compatible to or suitable for all devices under the umbrella of this x-device sub-forum.
And technically, such a x-device forum exists only once as a sub-forum to a specific device forum; all other respective device fora are just bearing a link to the x-device forum. The purpose of the x-device fora is that a thread with the code, which is suitable for multiple platforms, is published only once and not two, three or four times through duplicate threads. Without precedence, first XDA likes not to have duplicate threads but second - and probably more important - it allows the thread owner and developer to focus for support, assistance and update on a single thread and withdraws the requirement to monitor multiple threads. This (except for the update portion) also applies to our great XDA members who always live the spirit of XDA and try to help and support other members.
Please advise if my explanation wasn't sufficient or if I misunderstood your question. I'm very happy to elaborate more if required.

You explained it perfectly, thank you!
It also explains why I haven't really seen the X-Device sub before, as most of my devices have been A) Carrier specific, or B) Samsung's typical Samsung nonsense which is about as un-crossable as they come from my experience.

I'm glad to hear that I could answer your question.
My first Android device was a Motorola Milestone 2 but since then all devices in our family are Samsungs; even our first ones, S3 LTE GT-i9305, are still in use with great satisfaction. I never buy the lastest but only used ones in good conditions, and my current daily driver is a Galaxy S8+, SM-G955F. But I've to say I was so far pretty happy with the x-device development available in the S8+ forum. However, I'm currently no longer actively monitoring development there as it seems that all have moved to Android 10 and above. And for different reasons, I'm not willing to go beyond Pie - even if security patches aren't anylonger available; but this has also to do with my personal use of a smartphone or better with what I will never use it for.
Enjoy the day - but stay safe and stay healthy!

I totally understand. I hated android 5 and 6 with a fiery passion previously unbeknownst to mankind. I refused to upgrade and stuck with 4.4.2 pretty much until android 7/8. To be honest, I still prefer the mod scene and rom scene from good ol' 4.4 days. I really dislike Material (Most would say my opinion is "unpopular" at best, and downright stupid to most). Whether I like it or not, Android, Carriers, Manufacturers, and Developers are changing, and right along with them, XDA is as well. ( If you notice my -signature- the devices don't upgrade by model or release, they pretty much coincide with android upgrades that I liked, lol)

Absolutely correct, and we could continue this discussion or these talks for days - all flavoured with own experiences.
By the way: I think this is not device i.e. OP 8 Pro related. Would you mind if I move the thread to the general Q&A: https://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=456

Tbh id like to see device specific treble ROMs within device development sections or a sticky in discussion.
The treble sections although busy are littered with poor souls who have specific questions and many don't get answers.
There's a strength in treble which hasn't been explored or exploited as much as it should have been due to a lack of clarity between devices.
Even a known issues or knowledge base section would work.
It'll end up with everyone simply ignoring treble due to a lack of info on each GSI..

The decision if and when a device receives its own forum solely rests with the administrators (as far as I know in close coordination with the site owners). I'm also aware that they take multiple aspects into consideration but I'm lacking details. And same applies to dedicated sub-fora or sections.
I'm not familiar with treble ROM's or GSI's due to my devices but more my personal requirements especially regarding privacy. I guess I haven't changed the system on my daily used device for more than one year. Why to change a running horse?
Consider to provide your suggestions to the site's admins via the XDA Contacts & Help. It carries a specific form for (private) suggestions to make XDA better: https://www.xda-developers.com/contact/#suggestion. But if you want to go publicly I suggest this thread that you already know and where also we both communicated: [All XDA Members] Feedback/Recommendations for XDA

Aye I'll suggest it
In a nut shell what will happen is, someone will make a treble ROM. Then everyone from all corners of XDA and wider will turn up and say will this work on this device or this device..
9/10 they won't get an answer. That's what I'm driving at..
