Can I flash JellyBean on NS4G with Odin? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my NS4G back from Samsung as a warranty replacement, and it's been a nightmare. When I got it back, I wasn't able to make calls, and I had the dreaded "0:00 Call Ended" problem that has plagued other Samsungs. I finally got passed that by flashing ICS via Odin. I've since tried to agprude to custom JB roms by flashing through recovery, and every time I've done that I've had the phone freeze on bootup. I've tried this with multiple ROMs, verified checksums etc, and same problem. I also verified I had root by using Root Checker and also by accessing SuperUser.
Anyway, the only thing that's worked at all for me is Odin, so I'm looking for any JellyBean rom, whether it's stock or custom, that I can flash using Odin. There is a thread about a stock rom that can be flashed with Odin, but the files have been removed from that download site.
I've also tried unzipping ROMs, and repackaging them as a tar, and that hasn't worked either.
Thanks in advance.

Is there,a,rooted option Odin? Heimdall?

Are you sure you are flashing correctly through recovery? Recovery must work. Also you have to be sure that your roms are for Nexus 4G.

[Q] Rooting and Flashing custom rom without tripping counter

Ive been searching around on this topic for about one week and there doesnt seem to be a definitive answer on this. What I do know is that there is a custom rom flash counter in the download recovery menu that Samsung or AT&T can use to see if you modified the device. Im also hearing that on the 2.3.5 and above, using the USB jig doesnt allow you to reset that counter either anymore.
So..... to my question. It seems (if Im right) that rooting doesnt trip the counter. But Im guessing here. Specifically when I look at say the way DoomLord method works and the SuperOneClick it doesnt specifically talk about using ODIN (which again Im just assuming here). Then these methods put on CWM as your recovery menu that you can use to flash custom roms with.
I tried to analyze how that counter is tripped but some say it only trips if you flash a custom rom using ODIN and doesnt trip if you use CWM, but no real answer there.
I had a Skyrocket shortly before it had issues, I rooted it with DoomLord method, and put the Nexus 2.0 custom rom on it, then had to return it to stock using CWM, then unrooted it using DoomLords method. I didnt know about this flash counter till afterwards (after the device was replaced) so never got a chance to see if it tripped. But from what I read it says once its tripped this Yellow Warning logo or sign is always shown on bootup for a short time, mine definitely didnt have that.
So all in all just looking for a method to root/unroot and also once rooted flash custom roms (if even possible) without tripping that counter.
Thanks
Dixit
I root using doomlords, installed cwm recovery using rom manager app, and flashed custom rom through cwm.. did NOT trip counter.
Thats awesome. I believe that was the exact same way I did it on the now returned skyrocket.
Im wondering if the flash counter only trips if you flash custom roms using ODIN. I do see alot of other folks that mention their counters have tripped and are sitting in the 10-20-50 range already. But I also see the devs who produce the custom roms also claim it does not trip the counter, so I was kind of lost on what actually causes it to trip? Is it using ODIN to flash a custom rom? Does using CWM and not ODIN basically bypass that counter from tripping? Again Im speculating here as Im not an expert in this area, just got into Android. Came from being a BB user for almost 10 solid years.

Yes... the only thing I've seen that trips the custom binary counter is flashing a boot.img (kernel) using Odin. If a. tar has a kernel in it, it will trip. If you use Odin to just flash the Recovery Partition (i.e., CWM) it will NOT trip the counter.... then use CWM to flash Rom/Kernel zip files, you will be OK. I've also Odin flashed the stock 3e Recovery and it did not trip.

This.
Flashing the recovery partition (CWM or the stock 3e) with Odin, and flashing .zip files within CWM will NOT trip your counter.
Flashing anything else (back to stock, for example) in Odin WILL trip the counter.
If you need to return to stock, use a Clockwork backup. It's what I've been doing and I've flashed 4 or 5 different roms several times and am now back on the newest stock again with my counter at 0.

I learned the hard way about Odin flashing. Tripped my counter 2 or 3 times while learning how to flash files to Samsung devices.

Thanks, this is what I suspected and you clearly confirmed it for me. Thanks again.
I had a good feeling that as long as one stays away from ODIN and uses CWM you would be fine. I did the same as you on the previous skyrocket, did a full backup of the device as stock on CWM then saved that off, then when I needed to return it back to stock, I simply restored that backup file.
So for those that have tripped it, just out of curiosity, is the statements true then that everytime you bootup you get that yellow warning symbol for a brief moment?
Dixit
There is no way to reset the counter at all? I have 2 clicks on it even though I've done nothing different from what I was doing on my Hercules, which had 0 clicks after A LOT of flashing
From what I read and searched you used to be able to use the USB jig and actually reset the "flash counter" before, but on the 2.3.5 and 2.3.6 Samsung updated the bootloader and you cannot do it anymore. Same issue is on the Galaxy SII side as well. So far no one has figured out a way to reset that counter on the latest bootloader.

Nope... haven't seen one yet, and I reboot a lot.
But I know I've tripped it a couple of times.

[Q] Can't Enter Custom Recovery?

Background: I am still on ICS 4.0.4 rooted and unlocked (atleast ez unlock says im unlocked and i have superuser and voodoo says im still rooted) .
However, when I try to flash a custom recovery , ROM manager gets stuck at 100 % and closes. I have also tried installing a custom recovery via EZ recovery, and it says its flashed. However, when I boot into recovery mode, all i see is the stock recovery. So I am not sure what is going on. Do you guys have any idea?
If your still on ICS try selecting an older recovery? Some newer versions are not meant for ICS anymore I believe ...

I recall a similar issue I had due to the bootchain...not sure if that would apply here or not though
I was reading somewhere that samsung devices auto -overwrite a flashed recovery and change it back to stock. I am not sure how to combat this issue , or whether this affects anyone else?
You could try flashing a recovery through odin, that might give a different result. I think when you boot straight into recovery mode from download mode after flashing it might ask you to disable the phone from auto restoring the stock recovery.
I could be wrong though, it seems that's a common thing that happens when rooting a 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 base. However, flashing only the recovery file should still work for an ics base too. Just make sure it's a tar file, not an img file for the custom recovery for use in odin.

Soft-bricked - Looking for Odin Flashable Stock Recovery 3e

So after 2 days of trying via Odin, I give up. Anybody here got a copy of Stock Recovery 3e? One that can be flashable via Odin?? I tried installing hyperdrive, and it installed via aroma but when I rebooted I got a Verizon Unauthorized rom warning. I really, really thought I had an unlocked bootloader after ez unlock. I don't have stock recovery nor cwm touch anymore (the one I replaced 3e with).
Since Odin just wouldn't work (tried all versions) and just fails after a few minutes, I figured maybe I could get away with flashing a recovery 3e, then wiping and reflashing a flashable stock rom from there. Any help will be appreciated.
Your best option is to figure out how to get Odin to flash stock. That will fix your recovery. Do you have the proper drivers installed? Does Windows detect it in device manager? Does Odin see it?

This solved my soft brick, I hope it solves yours too!

[Q] Can I go back to a stock rom from CWM?

Hi guys,
3 days ago I had root but softbricked by installing hyperdrive when "I thought" I unlocked via ez-unlock but I guess that didn't take. Tried to restore back to stock but couldn't, I lost access to CWM and Odin nor Heimdall (Mac, Linux and Windows) didn't like my phone in 3 computers using 3 different cables.
But from continuous failed/incomplete/partial flashes, CWM is miraculously back! So that's like my only glimmer of hope right now. So my question is could I get back to stock or any rom from flashing something from CWM? Could I get ANY kind of ROM running again, could I root again, unlock bootloader and install new rom via CWM.. Basically can I fix my phone from CWM? Or is the only way back to any rom is via stock via Odin/Heimdall?
PLEASE HELP.

So confusing....
Ok, so you're on a stock rom right now and you have cwm installed? You must have some type of root enabled, do you have supersu or superuser installed? If you don't you need to install one from the playstore.
If you have cwm, then all you need to do is use ez unlock to unlock your bootloader then you can flash away. Use version 1.2, you likely used 1.4 which doesn't always work.

I'm really sorry about the confusion.
I came from a stock rooted, "unlocked" rom, it had CWM touch installed. Then I tried to install Hyperdrive.. Install went well via aroma.. But after reboot I got the verizon unauthorized error and I lost access to CWM Touch but I could go into download mode... Now here's where the confusion starts...
I tried to flash back to stock via Odin. Each and every single time it failed after a few files. Believe me I looked for a solution as in several solutions all of which failed until my last flash which also failed but installed a few more files before it failed and I dunno I got CWM Touch back.
Hence the reason why I'm asking if I could fix my phone via CWM because Odin is crazy and Heimdall is also picky.

So you can get into download mode just fine? You need to use a better USB cable and try a different port on your computer. It should be able to flash, but if you're using a lower quality cable than what came with the phone it might be your issue.
This guide should work if you can't get a normal flash back to stock work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840030
Basically, the only other way I know of to go back to stock without a pc is to use mobile Odin, but that needs root access. There's no file you can flash in recovery to go completely back to stock as it will still leave you with a custom recovery installed.

I finally got into my rom, after flashing the first boot chain (vralec) Odin messed up again, couldn't flash the 2nd one nor root66 so I pulled my batt and I guess the first vralec gave me stock recovery n just let me boot into my rom, installed twrp and ez unlock 1.2 from there, rebooted into twrp and then installed TkROM.
Thanks for all the help.

[Q] SCH-I535 Stuck in Recovery Loop

Hi guys. I have a Verizon S3 that is out of warranty that I've decided to mess around with since I've already upgraded to a G2. I tried to flash ClockworkMod Recovery using heimdall, but couldn't get it to work. Since I couldn't get heimdall to work, I rooted and installed ROM Manager, then installed ClockworkMod Recovery from there. When I rebooted to get into recovery it says "Verizon has encountered unauthorized software" and wouldn't let me in. I booted normally, then tried to go into recovery from ROM Manager. I get the same message, but now I'm stuck in a recovery loop. I've tried flashing back through heimdall and Odin, but neither one is working for me.
I can get into download just fine, but everything I try to flash with Odin gets me a big FAIL message. Any suggestions? The phone was upgraded to 4.3 before I got a hold of it, which is probably my main issue.
Try flashing ORIGINAL STOCK. You have a locked bootloader and will not be able to install a custom recovery or any custom rom. But, once you're up and running you can root it.

Do you have a link to the original stock files for 4.3? I've looked, but can't find any.
Try this. It worked for me.
