[SOLVED] How to flash ENG bootloader - HTC Desire S

I just got my HTC Desire S a week ago and am looking at taking S-OFF and rooting. I want to remove all the unnecessary apps and install root-only apps.
I've read most of the guides and tutorials, so am I correct in saying that all I need to do is S-OFF with Revolutionary and then root with SuperOneClick? (I am not flashing a custom ROM for the time being.)
However, I noticed the following the development index:
ben_pyett said:
It is recommended that after unlocking your device with Revolutionary you install an ENG bootloader, so that you can easily upgrade and downgrade your bootloader if required in the future - not doing so can lead to difficulties.

I want to root in the safest way possible so I would like to do this, but I couldn't find any guide explaining how to install the ENG Bootloader.
Can anyone help me with some steps explaining how to do this or point me to a thread that does?
Apologies for the noob questions.

If necessary, I've included the information from the bootloader below:
SAGA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-0.98.0002
RADIO-3805.06.02.03_M
eMMC-boot

In above thread stated that you have to S-OFF to be able flash ENG bootloader.

For you it's easy because you have HBOOT-0.98.0002 so read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186401
and do it!!!!!!!!!

There is a simple guide linked to in that thread (found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18122984&postcount=237)
Is this method flashing an ENG hboot? Will it help to upgrade and downgrade my hboot like in the quote I mentioned in the first post?

Yep, but first you have to revolution your device.

There are still two steps in the guide I don't understand (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18122984&postcount=237)

Retore you backup using Nandroid Retore

EDIT: I have completed S-OFF with Revolutionary and rooted with SuperOneClick and the bootloader shows the following:
SAGA PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-6.98.1002
RADIO-3805.06.03.03_M
eMMC-boot
Is it still necessary to install an ENG bootloader as advised by ben_byett?

Oke your S=off, you got recovery (and superuser? you need it).
Forget the the story in the quote because its not compleet.
If you want to learn more about Hboot, Radio, ROM etc and how to flash/install it
read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186401
and if you want more info mostly you can find it in other treats and topics.
It's not necessary to flash a ENG bootloader. Some say that not all busybox and SDK commands
work with SHIP bootloaders. If've run a SHIP bootloader my self and could use all the busybox
and SDK commands.
To place or remove software from the root you need a explorer with root acces. The one I use
is X-plore (play store) its free. First always make an nandroid backup in case!
Good luck

The risk comes during the processes you have already carried out - getting S-Off and root. Installing a custom ROM now is simple and doesn't really carry any risk at all. Just take a Nandroid backup of your default ROM before doing anything else.

If there isn't any risk from installing a custom rom then I don't see why not to.
I have completed a Nandroid backup and have copied it to the computer as well and will be installing a custom rom.
Is it necessary to flash radios at any time when installing different roms?

The normal recommendation is only to flash a new radio if you are having problems with the existing one. Some ROMs do have a "preferred radio" listed, but that is usually because that is the radio that the Dev has tested on.

Will this method work fine to install a custom rom and is there anything else I should know that isn't mentioned here?

Should be fine looking at it. I much prefer 4EXT as a recovery - touch input and everything - but the basic premise is the same. Wipe everything, flash ROM from .zip file, flash correct GApps (if not included), boot, wait, play ...

You may be safe if you have full radio S-OFF and SuperCID but this is unconfirmed, and I would steer well clear until the DEVs have cracked open this latest HBoot.

Confirmed:
Only if you have full radio S-OFF you can 'downgrade' to 1.32xxxxxx and root
Yes, I can confirm that, too. You have to have Super-CID (Radio S-OFF) to downgrade. Rooting is not possible in this new one. Yet.
Can please someone explain me what's the real difference between ENG S OFF But CID 11111 and SHIP S OFF and CID HTC....?
ENG S-OFF: It is engineering bootloader S-OFF (may include Radio S-OFF). Allows custom bootloader commands, for example radio flashing, also allows to install custom roms.
SHIP S-OFF: Radio S-OFF, does not allow radio flashing, but allows ClockworkMod flashing. Usually comes together with SuperCID.
CID 11111111: Super-CID, Super Carrier ID, allows you to downgrade, and flash really anything to the phone without the phone saying "no thanks".
CID HTC__xxx: HTC Carrier ID, does not allow downgrading via RUU, but you can still flash through ClockworkMod if you are S-OFF.
Thank you very much for this answer..I ask because i cannot find this information somewhere in one post!
I am with ENG S-OFF and CID 11111111
So i can flash the new RUU and i am able to revert back to 1.32xxxxxx and root again.Correct?
Looks like its been rooted.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9936625&postcount=91
At least it has if you flash just the system.img
Yeah but it needs clockworkmod, which goes away if people use the actual RUU. Also flashing system.img does not replace the bootloader, so S-OFF stays in fine (also hboot S-OFF).
How can you tell what your CID is?

Bootloader > Fastboot > System Info (or something like that)
If you are SuperCID then it is 11111111 if not, then it begins with HTC_xxxx
looks like also this RUU_Ace_Orange_ES_1.75.75.2_Radio_12.28e.60.140f_2 6.04.02.17_M2_release also seems to stop you gaining root and fix's patched Hboot as someone saying he flashed the rom and can't gain root.

can you tell how to extract the system.img from rom?
all i get is a [0] file. dont know what to do with it.
[HOW TO SAFELY FLASH THE NEW ROM AND BE ABLE TO REVERT BACK]
Currently, the new ROM (1.72.405.3) has a new HBOOT (so you can't install ENG HBOOT S-OFF) and is difficult to root (not as simple as it is with previous ROMs). However, it also has a better radio, and a faster ROM with various bugfixes. This ROM is also Android Froyo v2.21. If you want to try out the new ROM, whilst maintaining the ability to 'revert' back to your older, hackable state then follow the below instructions carefully. Also, do not worry about extracting system.img files and whatnot.
*It is recommended to do a NANDROID BACKUP first
*All RUUs can be obtained from www.xdafil.es/DesireHD/RUU/
*If you don't do steps 1-3 properly and flash the new ROM, you will not be able to revert back
*Radio S-OFF and SuperCID can be obtained by following instructions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
*Tutorial for flashing RUUs (needed for steps 4 & 8): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841890
1. Install Radio S-OFF (NOT ENG HBOOT S-OFF) and SuperCID
2. Go to bootloader, then System Info. (If System Info is not there, but you have SHIP S-OFF skip step 3 and proceed to step 4)
3. Make sure CID is 11111111 *AND* the bootloader shows S-OFF. If not, repeat step 1
4. You can now flash the new ROM (1.72.405.3)
5. This will remove ENG HBOOT (if you had it) and ClockworkMod
6. If you did steps 1-3 correctly, your Desire HD should still be S-OFF. Go to bootloader and check. If not, you did not do steps 1-3 correctly and will have to wait for the new HBOOT to be cracked.
When you are done with the new ROM and want to go back, follow the instructions below:
7. Download the HTC RUU 1.32.405.6 of your choice (Since you are SuperCID you can flash any RUU)
8. Flash it to your Desire HD
9. Root your ROM using Visionary, and install ROM Manager and flash ClockworkMod. You can optionally install ENG HBOOT S-OFF now if you like.
If you made a NANDROID Backup, you can restore this now from ClockworkMod

Hi,
You should be OK to just install something like ARHD ROM
It contains root and recovery, which are installed when you flash the ROM...
On the [OP] is also a superwipe which will clean and prepare your phone for the new ROM.
Backup your stuff, place the superwipe and ROM on the root of your sd card and flash from recovery
Thanks for.your response but I'm really not interested in installing Custom Roms at the moment, just Stock Rom for now.
Can you please if u know or have any info on doing the.rooting and Custom Recovery by myself.

Revolutionary is an engineering (ENG) bootloader
Oh ok so ENG stands for Engeneering I thought it stranded for English, sorry but I'm still new to all this Android Terminology.
You know, someone should make a thread with all these android terminology and make it a Sticky.
Thanks for the info.

HOLY CRAP! can this be any more confusing. I've been following this thread waiting for a final answer and still nothing. If anyone gets this done, please do a step by step for those of us not willing to blaze new ground here.
I know there are tons of us in the same boat. Upgraded to ICS stock and wanting to keep the ROM, just open ourselves up to CWM flashing options and root required apps.
Based on what the original poster is going through here, most of us do not want to chase down link after link.
I'll keep watching hoping for a final answer. Make the last post a link to the STEP by STEP.
Thanks all for your patience.
Look, you basically need a bootloader that says *unlocked*, *revolutionary* & *juopunutbear*.
If you are S Off but locked, flash an ENG Hboot.
If you are S On & locked, unlock using HTC Dev or S Off using JB.
Now, after this, flash 4EXT recovery & then root the device.
If your Hboot version is less than 1.27 flash firmware.
I'm assuming you are already on stock, so you have a stock rooted rom with custom recovery.
All of these can be done using my tool.
That's about as much I can help you with.
Also, when you talk about being new, look at when I've joined & when you'll have.
I got my first android phone a month ago & I'm on XDA since less than 3 weeks!
(No offence meant, but please try searching)

ok i just downloaded your tool from your the link under your signature and is version 6.4.2 and i think i remeber you or someone else suggesting that i needed to install the ENG option which is option 10 but then your tools says that option 10 in intended for devices who have been S-Off using the JB S-Off (juopunutbear or something, the wire trick thingy). so mine as you can see in the first post im S-Off but im still remained Locked from upgrading from 2.3.4 to 4.0.3 but i have never used the JB method, sooooo does option 10 applies to me or NOT?

How to superwipe & root to Install ARHD ROM for Hboot 1.27?

Hello Guys
I want to flash The Android Revolution HD custon ROM.. I read this thread and also this one I fully understand, but just some points are not clear, I desperately need your guidance
The points that I didn't understand are:
- How to SuperWipe! I searched the forums, I know I hv to put Mike's script in root of sdcard.. boot at recovery.. when I choose recovery (after holding volume- + power key) It only shows a draw of a mobile with red exclamation mark! should I hv flashed recovery first? I never flashed anything.. I only unlocked my phone at htcdev.com and my sensation has S-ON and Hboot 1.27. With upgraded to ICS 4.0.3 and 3.32.163.12 firmware.
- What is the best recovery that would help me do superwipe? And how to flash this recovery?
So when I successfully superwipe I should install a stock ROM Then root it again ( as auggie2k explained)
I know how to install a ROM but I Don't know how to root!
So many questions I know! sorry but I'm new at those things..
1. This really should have gone in Q&A section
2. Best recovery is probably 4EXT.
3. Because you are S-ON, you need to follow the installing ROMs with S-ON guide (another reason to use 4EXT recovery is because of smartflash feature which makes flashing a ROM with S-ON much simpler).
4. I would recommend S-OFFing anyway because it means you can upgrade firmware and get supercid as well as others, look at the guides for juopunutbear S-OFF for more info on this

Thanks guys for your guidnance.. I was just confused coz there are too much threads there that i read! anyway It was really easy though! Also this thread helped me to Boot into 4ext Recovery from PC without installation:fingers-crossed: which allowed me to wipe, root and install Stock ROM then doing S-OFF which was successful after following http://unlimited.io/'s JuopunutBear method. Now that I installed 4-EXT with your help guys, I'm downloading ARHD ROM in order to flash it with 3.33.401.x firmware

[Q] Can i root?

I've looked all over the forums, but i can't find an answer, could someone tell me if i can root my phone using SuperOneClick?
Here's what it says when i boot into bootloader:

SAGA PVT ENG S-OFF RL
HBOOT - 2.00.2002 (PG8810000)
RADIO - 3822.10.08.04_M
eMMC-boot
I would like to install cyanogen mod, and i'm on t-mobile uk if that helps
How did you S-OFF without downgrading the hboot?

It was originally like that, haven't done anything to it
Your HBOOT says that your phone is S-OFF, which means you have full access to it.
On the other hand, not knowing your OS version, I'm not sure you can root using SuperOneClick - since it only works for Gingerbread.
Since you have S-OFF, just go and find "root for S-OFF users" thread in Development and do what is written there.
Download a rooted custom rom (usually a custom rom is rooted) then flash via recovery. You'll have your DS rooted.

Since your DS is already S-OFF you don't need SuperOneClick. You can root by flashing SuperSu from a custom recovery. You may already have a custom recovery installed by the person who S-OFFed your phone. If not it won't be too difficult to install a custom recovery. I recommend you 4EXT touch. You should also make a nandroid backup from the recovery of your current ROM before attempting to flash an alternate one. Titanium backup is also very useful in order to be able to restore your apps and their data after flashing a ROM. The pro version in worth the money.

Doesn't SuperSu require a rooted device? and i think 4ext also requires root access.

4EXT is a Recovery - has nothing to do with being rooted or not rooted

Judging by your answer, I strongly advise you to stay away from rooting your phone, and reading a lot instead.

One you've comprehended and then followed the advice given in the two posts above
Install a recovery and then use it to install a custom pre-rooted ROM. You'll find links in the INDEX thread along with guides, which should be read, see the link in my signature.
Did you buy you're device new?

Since your phone is S-OFF, you can flash a recovery with fastboot from your PC. It may not be necessary if a custom recovery has already been flashed to your phone. Check your recovery before proceeding to flash a custom one.
Once you have a custom recovery installed, your can flash SuperSu from this recovery to your ROM. You'll then have rooted your current ROM and will be able to make backups before trying to flash alternate ROMs. At minimum you should make a nandroid backup from the recovery ; it will allow you to come back to your current ROM in case your not satisfied with the alternate ROMs.
But take your time and read the stickies in order to be sure you understand what you are doing before proceeding further.

Rare, but I seem to remember over a year ago when we all had to use an XTC-Clip that some people got their phones already S-Off.

Not necessarily at all. Regular bootloaders, even when S-OFF, don't allow fastboot commands. If you try executing it on phone that was S-OFF-ed with XTC-Clip, for example, it'll fail.
For that the bootloader has to be re-engineered (or engineering bootloader flashed).
why exactly do u want to root your phone? do u want to flash a custom rom or do u want root access for the heck of it?
if u want to flash a custom rom then i suggest you go through this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1850574
it has links to some other threads.. finally please do make a backup of your original rom in case u dont like the custom rom

In his case, he got his phone S-OFF with a re engineered bootloader (2.00.2002). I find it strange that a stock phone comes pre installed with a ENG bootloader...

I hadn't looked at the hBoot version. Maybe his idea of 'New' and the shop's idea of 'New' are somewhat different - possibly a returned product that they hadn't checked properly before reselling.

Sorry but can you be more explainable? I have done the htcdev bootloader unlocking and wanted to install a custom (rom cm 10.1) then i flashed the new firmware 3.33 (universal) as guided by developer, When i try to flash Superuser-3.0.7 from cwm recovery the installation fails. What did i do wrong?I tried also KGS utility and when trying to root the app restarts the phone continuously failing to root.

There is nothing to explain.

why you want to root ..if you are about to change the rom anyway ?
all custom roms comes pre-rooted
so you can skip the rooting part ..if you still want to try ..try my one click root from my soff guide ..link in my signature (just root tool is fine ..you can skip the soff part)
