[Q] New guy here, I could use some help with ROM - HTC Sensation

Hello, I got HTC Sensation XE, and I was thinking of upgrading my ROM to ViperS.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671547
I got a few questions about upgrading my ROM..
1. If I upgrade to ViperS, and I am not happy with my new ROM, am I able to move back to the normal Android (I guess this is called ''flashing''..?)
2. Am I able to use every app from the Google play store?
3. I suppose this ViperS ROM will work with my Sensation XE as well..?
4. Does upgrading ROM harm/damage files, phone, or anything?
5. Am I going to have problems with Wi-fi after upgrading? (I've heard some guys have had problems with wifi)
EDIT: More questions:
1. What ''unlocks/mods'' do I need to do to upgrade ROM? By ''mods'' I mean things such as rooting and S-Off etc.
2. Which should I do first? Flash? Root? HTC Dev unlock?
3. Is Super Utility easiest way to root? It seems like it is the best one for it, since 90% happens with PC.
4. Last one, is flashing boot.img = ROM flashing..? Or is Installing .zip from recovery = ROM flashing? The Super Utility has ability to flash boot.img and installing .zip once I have HTC Dev unlocked.
Once again, thanks already.
(Yes I have googled and checked all over the forums, but I want to be 100% sure of everything, I don't want to destroy my quite new phone)
Thanks for help!

Hi,
Follow THIS GUIDE to the letter
1.Make a nandroid backup (in backup and restore in 4 EXT)
2.Should be able to,once you have rooted
3.yes
4.Should be OK
5.Follow the guide above.

I've ran viper for a long time before flashing to jelly bean and I never had any problems with Wi-Fi or tethering. I upgrade or flash a lot and never had any trouble luckily. Yes the play store will work perfectly with viper. I think everything will go fine. Are you s off? If not don't forget to flash boot image. If your s off all you need to do is wipe cash and wipe dalvik and wipe data factory reset. Do this in 4ext recovery then choose zip and install then reboot. You will be good to go.
Hope this answers your questions. Also for any applications you want to keep use titanium backup for that. Remember to do you're nandroid backup before you flash anything this way if you get into a pinch you can always restore your previous rom. This is very important and a good practice to have as a safe guard. Happy flashing. Best wishes

I rooted following raep video on youtube, parts 1 and two.
flashed with the rom and zip in the description.
did prop editor (already was set to 1).

You now need to install a Rom besides that downgraded one.

and what rom would be a good choice?
(if i install a new rom, does that wipe all the apps i have on currently? because that would suck)
You'll get varying opinions as to what ROM but I prefer CM7. To save your apps, install Titanium Backup(TB) and backup all of them, put your ROM of choice on the sd card, nandroid backup everything for any oops that may occur then wipe/factory reset and flash your rom. Once your booted, reinstall TB and use it to recover your apps from the backup created on the sd card.
I did this coming from my Aria to the Inspire and only a few didn't make the trip.
Tx
EDIT: be sure to sync all your contacts to Google before flashing so you can get them back should you choose CM7. It doesn't read ATT sims.
Some do some don't, depends what the devs decides/ puts in the updater script. I think its better to wipe everything anyway especially if your new to avoid any possible problems. You can always back up with titanium backup, then restore your apps when you install the new Rom, just only back up apps and their data, avoid anything with /system.

do i flash radio first? or rom first?
and flash you mean boot in recovery mode and install from sd the zip, right?
I wil definitely make nandroid backups.

[Resolved] [Q] I've made a mess of my Nexus S...

Hey guys,
This is my very first post, just to let you all know, so please have some patience! Thanks!
Anyway, so I have a Nexus S 3G (Canada) and I have rooted it, unrooted it, installed roms and everything. I works...for the most part. It's giving me all sorts of different little errors and what not. So I was wondering, how can I COMPLETLY start ALL OVER, as in, factory new, like when you buy a new phone (without the carrier stuff). I wanted to start fresh, fresh out-of-the-oven kind of start, do you understand what I mean? FACTORY FRESH. Thank you all so much in advance!
well download your phone's stock rom and of course unroot it.Regarding the stock bloatware you can modify the custom rom by going in system/app and deleting the apps you dont want to be installed

Thanks for the reply, I've already done that, and I'm still getting errors and other weird things, like not going out of airplane mode, failing to download the OTA 2.3.6 Update (I'm on stock 2.3.1 unrooted, I think), and I don't know if this is normal, but ClockworkMod Recovery is still there. Am I still rooted or something? Plus, when I try to flash a restore, from let's say Gingerbread 2.3.6 Stock, it says MD5 mismatch! How about if it's an ICS AOSP Build, it gives me the normal white Google logo like normal, but then just stays stuck there.
Is the anyway to erase EVERYTHING and start over like NOTHING was ever done to the device? Like when they are first distributing the the device and no one has ever touched it? Is there anyway to do just that?
There is a difference between being "rooted" and using a rooted ROM. You could be using a non-rooted ROM, and your phone can still be "rooted". The first step in rooting a phone is changing SECURITY-ON to SECURITY-OFF. If you REALLY want to go back to when you first got the device, you will need to find a way to turn SECURITY from OFF to ON. When it is off, you are able to access the bootloader, in turn allowing you to install a recovery to install a ROM with rooted permissions. I think the best way to go back to stock would be for you to first download the latest OTA update for your device, do a FULL WIPE of everything on your phone thru recovery (data, system, cache, dalvik cache). Then installing the latest OTA. I do not think however, that this is how you turn your device S-ON.
I hope I've been of some help.

Thanks for your excellent reply, but I have also already done that, EXACTLY that, multiple times too. Dalvik, battery stats, factory reset/delete all user data, wipe cache partition and fix permissions. What else is there left to do?

[Q] Updating my rom

Hi as its my first post i cannot post in the specific development thread to this particular ROM.
I haven't updated my ROM in sometime. Currently my phone says i have:
Android Version - 4.0.3
HTC Sense version - 3.6
Software Number - Android Revolution HD 6.6.2 by mike1986
The newest rom version is 6.8.* and i was wondering the process to update from that version to this newer one. Or how to move to a different custom rom.
If you need more information then please ask. Im new here and just learning the ropes. Thanks in advance.
Josh.
Hi if your s off here is how you do it. Place rom on SD card by first downloading from computer than connecting with USB cable to phone to computer than share the rom, usually to disk drive e. This places it on SD card root. Then go into recovery and wipe cash then wipe dalvik then wipe data factory reset. Then choose install zip from SD card, then choose zip from SD card. Then scroll down and find your rom. Install the rom than reboot your phone. That's it. But before you flash anything do a nandroid backup of your current rom incase you get into a pinch you can restore your old rom easily. Now if your s on it's different. You will have to flash boot image I'm so off and not exactly familiar with every step for that but there is a great guide flashing roms with s on you can read if need be. But if your so off those are all the steps you need. Hope I've helped and happy flashing.

If he is going to update the ROM, you don't need to wipe anything often. You need to look to the forum and their they will say in the 1st or 2nd post how to install the ROM and if you are going to update the ROM it will often say you don't need to wipe anything. But if you want to be sure just read that post.
It's always a good idea to wipe as to prevent any Wi-Fi or other issues. I updated my rom and didn't do a full wipe and I had Wi-Fi issues, I went back reinstalled with full wipe now Wi-Fi works perfectly. In my opinion it's good to wipe.

It's really not ncessessary for small incrimental updates, which most nightly builds are.
However, this guy is going from ARHD 6.6 to 6.8. The ARHD page says you don't need to do a full wipe if coming from 6.7...which kind of implies that you do need a full wipe if coming from an earlier build.
So a full wipe would probably be recomended.
As for normal updating opperations...
Sure, things CAN get screwy when flashing over a previous build, but they usually do not. And if you are going to be updating regularly then it's really a gigantic waste of time to do a full wipe every 2-3 days since you'll spend an hour or 2 resetting everything up. Over a month that might be 18-24 hours just redoing settings, in hopes of avoiding a random error that might happen once every 2 months of flashing. It's kind of like driving 20 miles to save a penny on a gallon of gas. You spend more to get there than you save.
Always recomended to do a full nandroid backup first through. So if it doesn't work you can revert back to what you had quickly and save the full wipe and fresh install for a time when you've got more time to redo everything.
6.6 and 6.8 use different firmware bases...
Not wiping when he updets now only means he'll get trusted, and wipe later

really grateful for all of the responses. I think to be safe and just for the sake of a few hours ill do a full back up and wipe before installing.

[Q] How can I switch to Stock ICS Rom OR to another Custom Rom from CM10.1 ?

How can I switch to Stock ICS Rom OR to another Custom Rom from CM10.1 ?
Cyanogenmod is awesome, but I want to switch back to stock, or possibly on another sense based rom if I like one. How can I do this?
EDIT: Question has been answered, thanks to all who supported me on this thread.
Just flash the ROM you want in recovery like you did when you flashed cm 10.1
Here's stock ICS with improvements: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14191938

Ok, so I have a nandroid backup which I did in Stock firmware. If I go to recovery and do full wipe followed by restoring the backup, I will get stock ROM with all the apps that were installed at the time of making backup, right? Same can be done in to switch to CM rom?

PS my phone is HBOOT 1.29
Reboot recovery
Format all partitions except SD card.
Flash ROM.
Reboot
You can also do an RUU. Look here and do step 2.4 to find your executable ruu: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26541170

Thanks for the quick reply, but can you tell me where to get the stock ROM too? Is it available on the HTC website? I have searched other posts but there seems to be no link for HBOOT 1.29
Here's arhd 7.2, a modified and improved version of stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14191938
Hboot version doesn't really matter. It's just the way the phone boots up.
If you want to revert to complete stock, no modifications, no improvements, then I would run the .exe ruu file from your computer. Here's the links for the .exe files: http://www.shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Pyramid
Make sure you download the right ruu (XE or 4g) for your phone and the right country/carrier for it.

It has happened both when I'm charging and when it's not plugged into anything. It happens worst, and most often when the phone heats up, which is a big issue with CM. Part of the reason i wanna switch back to Stock ROM is to prevent any permanent damage to the internals with this frequent overheating. The battery stays cool, mind you.
My personal laptop's motherboard got fried yesterday so i'm just gonna wait until my exams end in a couple of weeks, and then get a new one and change the phone's ROM. I promise to update you guys on what happens

I had mentioned charger because i have a China charger and when my phone is charging and i lay it on a flat surface it touches itself everywhere whenever i touch somewhere. this happens to me due to incompatible charger. however i still charge with that charger. well this is my problem, yours is different.
I am not sure but I think there must be prominent links on Google containing stock roms. I have never searched for android but Nokia used to have dedicated softwares and websites for this.
And a free advice: if you want sense then try viper s Rom with sense 4.1 and android ics. (the one with jb doesn't have a working camera). I am using this and sense 4.1 is really good.
it is laggy though.

[Q] Upgrade CyanogenMod 10.1 with goo.im not working

Hello Everyone,
Im new to this forum as a poster, I do have read quite a few tutorials on here on how to unlock/root/s-off my device but now Im stuck again and can't seem to find a solution.
I have a HTC Sensation Z710e and I'm running CyanogenMod 10.1-20130309-Albinoman887-pyramid. Now whenever I watch a movie I there are no troubles BUT when I scroll in the movie or pause it or whatever I get an error. I looked it up and found out my version is an unstable one. So a friend of mine explained to me I could update via Goo.im, and here's the problem. It says there are no updates for my device even though that friend of mine updated to 10.1-20130601-Albinoman887-pyramid in the same way.
I did get a message like 2 weeks ago there was an update available for my device but when I clicked the notice nothing happened.
Now my biggest question is, is there some way I can download an update zip in stead of the 10.1-20130601-Albinoman887-pyramid Rom and have to start all over again with all my apps, or am I just ****ed and need to start backupping what I want to backup and start over again?
Thx for any and all insights,
Marius
well if the rom is just an update from the same rom, get it from another repo (download it from your phone or pc) and flash it with TWRP/CWM
It should work, I've done many rom upgrades without wiping my system.

So you're saying I should just "install from sdcard" with my 4EXT and it will not wipe all my settings? Even though its a completely "new" ROM but just an update of the one I have right now? I dont have to invoke something like "update"?
I did already download the file with Goo.im (that did work ) and it was about 157mb, that gives me the feeling its a completely new ROM, that's why Im a bit hesitant
Thx for the info though
MariusJP is right, there's no need for a wipe when you are flashing an update, but it may depend from ROM to ROM and from update to update. Just flash it and look for problems. If there are problems you'll have to wipe.
You should do a Backup via CWM before flashing any new software especially when it's not a stable one.
Flashing this update won't wipe your settings and data.
