[Q] Procedure following bootloader unlock? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hi,
I recently unlocked my bootloader follow this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952038
It looks like I did it successfully, but my phone seems to have been restored. During the process the phone automatically made two backups, and I was wondering if it is possible to restore those, or if I just have to re-download everything.
Also now that my bootloader is unlocked, does that mean I'm rooted? What other steps do I need to do to get superuser or be actually rooted.
Thanks!

the backups are for you to remove the supercid. you need to hold onto those two backups[assuming they are mmcblk0p4MOD and mmcblk0p4ORIG] and your Unlock_code.bin you need to keep those 3 files. you will probably only ever use Unlock_code.bin if you need to run ruu at anytime. in order to restore the other two files you do this process [2.20 Firmware] Remove Pesky root.
what you actually need to do now is "fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-evita.img" from TWRP 2.3 - HTC One X (ATT/evita) then flash this [29.08.2012] SuperSU v0.96 that will flash your twrp recovery and give you root. once you do that you can make modifications to your stock rom or ability to flash custom roms.
Remember to NEVER factory reset in bootloader or your will corrupt your sdcard.

I did the "fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-evita.img" using this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952076
but I don't notice any changes on the phone. Also, I'm unaware what the 'flashing' terminology is. Is there any way I can pay you a bit to show me how on teamviewer? I'm very unacknowledged with this topic and don't want to ruin a second HTC One X. :/
And also, is there no way to get my files back while keeping my bootloader unlocked? Or should I re-add all my songs and apps?

[HowTo] Root the latest OTA when the HTC Unlocker tool doesn't work

So, you've got the latest OTA (1.55.531.3) and the HTC unlocker tool won't work? Tired of waiting for HTC to issue a fix/resume the OTA? You no longer have to wait in agony.
These are the steps I took to unlock the latest OTA. They worked for me, they may not work for you. Anything you do to your phone is not my responsibility.
That said..
Backup what you can. Your phone is going to be wiped.
Make sure your battery is charged up.
Download the full 1.55.531.3 image. This contains the confirmation splash screen which wasn't loaded on older MT4GSes, and is the reason the unlocker tool won't work on our devices. You can get the full image (it's over 400MB) here:
http://www.filefactory.com/file/c0f....00_11.16.3504.20_2_release_227956_signed.zip

Download the CWM recovery image:
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.7-doubleshot.img
Click to collapse
Rename the full image downloaded in the first step to PG59IMG.zip and place it on the root of the SD card in your phone.
Shut the phone down, remove the battery, and boot back up while holding both the volume down and power buttons down.
The phone will check the PG59IMG.zip file and will ask you if you want to restore that image. You want to do this, but keep in mind this is going to wipe your phone. All data will be lost.
The phone will restore the image. This takes a few minutes. When it's done, you'll be prompted to reboot, and you'll boot into a completely stock MT4GS experience.
Use the unlock tool on htcdev.com to generate your unlock code. The splash screen is now on your phone, and you should be able to unlock (I had no issues).
I rebooted at this point, just to be safe, and set up my phone.
Copy the recovery image you downloaded earlier into the directory where you're running fastboot. Rename it to recovery.img
Shut down, boot into the bootloader/fastboot, and enter the following command to flash CWM recovery:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Click to collapse
At this point, you should probably reboot the bootloader before entering CWM. Once you've done that, you can go ahead and flash superuser/roms/etc.
Here's a pointer to restoring your phone to stock, courtesy of blue:

So if we've gotten this far, is S-OFF going to gain us anything more? Are we still locked out of certain areas? The tool worked for me, but I'm using the rest of your guide to flash CWM. Thanks for writing it!

In my opinion, S-Off won't really gain you much more. You'll have to flash kernels separately when flashing ROMs, but that doesn't seem to be a big deal (IMO).
You could probably flash back to the original release software if you wanted, and gain S-OFF with revolutionary, but I haven't tried that and have no idea if it will work.
The only thing you can't do with Unlocked/S-ON is flash radios.
Well in that case this phone is right where I want it. I've never messed with kernels on any phone I've had previously nor have I messed with flashing radios. I just got done completing the steps and I'm now root along with CWM. Great work throwing this up for everyone.

Well, where football is hosting the new PG59IMG.zip file is the only place we have it - i just found it yesterday and we haven't had time to up it anywhere else yet.
We are working on making mirrors for it now - give us some time to get set up with our new data.

No, you can't go back to retail factory if you are S-ON. This new PG59IMG.zip I found is the furthest back you can go completely.
With S-ON you cannot replace hboot, or radio - those two are a big deal - i'm still working on an S-OFF solution for S-ON people with hboot 1.45.0013.
With S-OFF I can swap out hboots on a whim, and thrice43 even flashed a Sensation hboot to his doubleshot and it worked out for him - but with S-ON you cannot do this. (and if you could, you would brick)
S-OFF is very much preferable to S-ON UNLOCKED.
I've also had problems flashing OTA updates through stock recovery manually when S-ON where I had no trouble doing so while S-OFF.
There are still a lot of things you can't do with your device while S-ON.
EDIT:
also, all the PG59IMG.zip files I made for people to flash recoveries, hboots, and so on in the dev reference sticky cannot be used by anyone S-ON because they fail the signature checks. My custom PG59IMG.zip files don't have an HTC signature which you must have for an S-ON device to load the PG59IMG.zip file.
...so there are a number of reasons why S-OFF is something to get.

You must flash a kernel if you want to flash an ICS ROM or any GB ROM with a modified kernel.
Also:
Here's a faster mirror, hopefully: http://www.4shared.com/zip/vVHQuid0/PG59IMG_Doubleshot_TMOUS_15553.html
I see the downsides to s-on but I'm happy to have root and cwm. I will however be excited to get this thing fully unlocked. I won't be messing with custom roms till then. lol

Oh sorry Lime, I didn't see that you were already hosting it...
this might deserve a sticky?
If anyone is going to mirror it please keep the original filename - we have more then one PG59IMG.zip file with an HTC signature (retail launch and this one).
If they are not named including the software version and radio then people may be confused on what they are getting - thanks guys!

You need to transfer the recovery image to the directory with your fastboot.exe file.
You would then need to rename it to recovery.img
Then you boot your phone into fastboot mode, and plug it into the computer.
Open a command prompt, and navigate to the directory with fastboot.exe and run the command:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

[Q] Getting back to stock from unlocked bootloader

I unlocked my MT4GS's bootloader a few months ago using HTC's tool, but I now find myself in a place where I need to reflash a stock ROM due to miscellaneous malfunctions. It's not for warranty/damage, I tried to restore my ROM to factory settings and couldn't due to removing the Sense UI for ADWLauncher. I tried to reflash my ClockWorkMod stock ROM backup, but it had a MD5 mismatch (and, sadly, was deleted accidently last night in organizing my SD card).
I am on an unlocked bootloader with S-ON RL showing on the boot screen. I have tried downloading one of the SG59IMG.zip files (both the latest 1.63 release, and the 1.55 release), but those do not work. I place them on my SD Card's root and allow HBOOT to find them, but it reports "Wrong ZIP!". I've read that re-locking my bootloader will fix this; any confirmation?
At this point, what I really want to do is get my phone back on a stock ROM, with or without ClockWorkMod, and start over again with the rooting process. As I said, this isn't for warranty service; I want to make sure I have a good stock recovery image available and that I have a solidly working phone while I wait for an ICS ROM that's stable for everyday use to come around.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Get the stock recovery from the devs section, Change " SG59IMG.zip" to " PG59IMG.zip", relock the bootloader so that hboot will see the zip. I think the lock command is "fastboot oem lock". To unlock it again you would have to flash the unlock token again

Whoops, it is PG59IMG already, just at work and wasn't in front of my phone at the time to confirm the file name. Is there a way to relock my bootloader without using the fastboot program from my computer? I've already uninstalled all of the HTC/ADB stuff to save processing power on my netbook and I'd like to avoid reinstalling it all if at all possible.

Ask and ye shall receive - I put together a package with the bare minimum you need to use ADB or fastboot. At about 736kb I think it's exactly what you were looking for.
(windows machine)
You don't need to install the entire SDK just to get the ADB or fastboot tools - all you need is what's here.
doubleshot_adb-fastboot.zip
Download Link
MD5: 47e72c0a2e2c1caaabd95b5df83e8913
Size: 736.03 KB
I also included a command prompt .bat file (Command.bat) so that when you unzip the archive to a folder, open that folder and double-click the Command.bat file and it will open you up to a command prompt already in the folder with the tools, wherever it is.
No more typing in some annoying CD command to get to the directory with the tools - simply open the folder (wherever it is at the time) and run Command.bat.
You will be ready to just dive right into ADB or fastboot commands (which is all you want, anyway, right?)
You will need the fastboot drivers for the doubleshot installed if they are not - get them here:
HTCDriver.exe
Download Link
MD5: 7fe1a01a816722718c6d369a3dc49166
Size: 13.08 MB
...and these are the same drivers that originally came on the SDcard of the doubleshot when you first got it. If you lost them, you can grab them again.
Enjoy!

Return to stock?

Are there any return to stock instructions floating around out there? I'm unlocked, with cwm recovery, and rooted but am thinking if returning the phone and obviously would need to restore the original recovery, do a factory reset, and re lock. I did this recently on my evo shift and it was a two step process (re rooting took all day). Hopefully this is similarly simple?
Thanks in advance.

You can flash the stock recovery and factory reset but to my knowledge motorola has not released a way to relock the phone

Does "fastboot oem lock" not work? That's what the instructions say from Motorola in the unlock bootloader page.
Also, where can I find the stock recovery?
Are these what I'm looking for (from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2001226)?

You need the TWRP recovery installed. If you've never used it before, you'll need to make a backup in order to generate the correct folders necessary. The directory will be either on your memory card (/external1) or internal memory (/sdcard). The folder path will be TWRP/BACKUPS/**your**phone's**serial**number**/
Inside that folder, create a folder and name it "stock backup" or whatever you want to name it. Then put the *.win and the *.md5 files in there. Put the stock recover in whatever folder you have your adb installed.
Reboot to recovery.
Restore the boot and system partitions from this backup (will show as "stock backup" or whatever you named it)
Once the restore is complete, back out to the main menu ... go to reboot -> choose bootloader
Flash your stock recovery ( fastboot flash recovery **whatever you named your recovery file**.img )
I typically flash this twice one right after the other just in case
Reboot your system ( fastboot reboot )
From there you should be all set.

Or, can I just flash the stock recovery.img you provided, try to re-lock the bootloader, and perform a factory reset to be sufficient to return?

To return to Original Software, you will need to reflash a Motorola signed software image to your device, or send it in to our service center to get reflashed. MOTOROLA reserves the right to charge for any assistance required by users during this process. At this time, we are not posting a recovery image for the Photon Q 4G LTE.
Source
stock images
Right, I understand that, but I'm still running Motorola Original Software (the stock ROM) because I never flashed either of the two in progress CM ports. I've got it back to a stock, still odexed, rooted with Motofail2go state with CWM recovery. So my plan is this:
Flash stock boot image (instead of the custom one which I used to replace the unlocked bootloader warning)
Flash stock recovery (which Moto claims they will not supply, but you just did), using:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Then, perform a factory reset from recovery (that's an option in there, right?)
Then, relock the bootloader with:
Code:
fastboot oem lock
And other than the flag somewhere in Motorola's database somewhere, it should be "like new", correct?
Final question, I see two different stock recovery images.
In shabbypenguin's post from August which you just linked to, a 10mb image.
And in drakeheart's post from last week a 5.8mb image.
Anyone know which one is the right one to use with my updated 77.8.10 software?
I'm not sure if there's a stock updated recovery hosted somewhere. You might wanna revert back to the oem system and re-update from there to be safe.
I ended up flashing the earlier, 10mb recovery and it worked fine. Able to factory reset from it no problem. Couldn't relock though, the fastboot oem lock function requires you to flash OEM software along in the process.

But even still, Moto has logged the device as unlocked assuming you followed the official unlock path...
Most stores probably won't check the phone thoroughly on returns. If you resell it to someone 3rd party, please tell them that you've unlocked it previously, as you have voided the manufacturers warranty.

[Q] What is the biggest mess I can make with my phone? And how to prevent it.

Hey Everyone
I have an HTC Sensation, HBOOT 1.27.0000 with 3.32 ICS Firmware, sim unlocked. I have decided to upgrade it to Kitkat, I'm noobe, So I'm just searching to gather information by now. I think I must install CyanogenMod 11.
I think the progress should be:
Unlock bootloader (using fastboot)
Get root access
S-OFF (Using Juopunutbear S-OFF for HBOOT 1.27.0000)
Wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache (I don't have enough information about this step, that what will happen after this step)
Flashing Rom (Which will be CyanogenMod 11)
Flashing GAPPS (which will be an extra step, but I will do it)
I need to know that what are the possible risks, and how can I prevent them. will I loose SIM unlock? (Here in XDA, many people said no, but a few people mentioned that it can be possible. So which one is true?) How can I backup SIM unlock? How can I backup current Rom on my phone and be able to restore that backup.
Any kind of help will be appreciated

After s-off you need to flash custom recovery and do backup form your stock rom
sent from HTC Sensation 4G
make sure you don't have HTC sync or something like that on your pc when trying to s-off, best to not even have HTC driver at all - use "universal android driver".
It's how I ruined my sd card. Also, make sure you back up ALL your sdcard content because you can lose it during s-off (I did). If you get past s-off without a hitch, then everything else will be easy. Do note that 4.4 ROMS are still buggy relative to the older ones

What about SIM unlock, how can I back it up? Currently I've made a backup of my ROM with "clockworkmod" using and app named "Rom Manager".
I don't know what sim unlock is sorry. If it's a physical unlock, then s-off or a ROM change won't change it. If it's something within your ROM like an app then changing your ROM will remove it, you have to get it again, but as I said I don't know what a sim unlock is (google something like "sim unlock, rom" - if its not removed when you change roms then it won't be removed in this scenario)
You should use 4ext recovery or twrp recovery instead of clockworkmod, they both can do more and go wrong less often.
Once in 4ext recovery, do a backup (this is called a nandroid backup),
copy that backup from your sd card and whatever else to somewhere else safe (you can lose the data in your card during s-off) as long as you have that nandroid you can always return your phone to the state it's in when the backup took place.

Thank you.
So, If I mess everything and my phone isn't booting/loading, then I can always go into recovery mode using "fastboot"?

Well, i lost my recovery when i tried to s-off this last sensation. BUT as long as you can get into fastboot/hboot (the white screen when you press power+volume down) you can flash recovery.img from your computer there, so you will always be able to get into recovery
Even if you can't get to fastboot using power+volume down for whatever reason, you may still be able to get to fastboot if you can get adb or fastboot command(s) respond from command prompt (this is what happened to me, can't get to fastboot using volume+power, but can send adb commands from computer)
you should be ok, just make sure ASK IF YOU'RE UNSURE, DON'T JUST ASSUME THINGS THAT YOU'RE REALLY NOT SURE OF, ESPECIALLY REGARDING S-OFF METHOD/SDCARD, it's how I bricked my sdcard(well lost data)

Thanks.
So, I think my biggest concern must be loosing SIM Unlock. SIM unlock process is not supported in my country because we can not pay, so I can't have the unlock code.

Thank you, but it is now unlocked, I want to keep it unlocked, even after flashing ROMs. I just don't want to risk.

Flashing roms has nothing to do with SIM lock.
S-Off not necessary to flash CM 11
Getting S-Off is not really required if you're just looking at flashing ROM's. I've been using my phone with S-On since more than a year and no problem in flashing any ROM yet. You just need to flash 4ext recovery and enable smart flash. Just follow this awesome guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861
And you may go for S-Off after you get to know more about your phone...
Just my input here but you cannot lose sim unlock pal it's a hardware lock that once removed cannot be undone
Sent from my HTC Sensation using Tapatalk
From my experience, once you SIM unlock you won't lose it after you s-off, root, and flash... But as everybody has said, make sure you backup just in case you need to go back or do something wrong

Thanks everyone. Finally, with your helps, I flashed Cyanogenmod 11 on my HTC Sensation, and all the progress went well, without loosing anything important! But, After a few hours of testing, I found some problems, that made me go back to official Rom. I think I'd better write a review about it for other people too.

[Q] about root

are the modaco's rooting method still viable ? I'm seeing people saying it not work.
and can we root without having to flash other recovery, just using the default one (fastboot).
Nope, no rooting methods without unlocking bootloader yet. Most reliable method is to use custom recovery to root, and also some other fastboot (which will need unlocked bootloader)

root with unlocking bootloader is fine, my question is can we root without flashing other recovery (eg. cwm) ?
Recovery is not working in Moto g sometimes.. It's a known issue.. So better flash cwm to avoid bricking

oh thank you for the info, then I root with cwm :good:
Stock recovery is pretty useless now, I hardly have any idea what it can even be used for other than those ota updates. Do you not want to move away from stock recovery cause you might not install firmware updates? You can install alternate recovery just for rooting and revert back to stock if you really want to.

I just being careful if not how to send warranty
Well, if you are unlocking the bootloader, you won't be able to claim warranty anyway.

oh yeah forgot about that, but what if after root, I lock back the bootloader ?
is the root still there ?
To lock bootloader you have flash your stock firmware, which in a way would be a complete reset, so no root left. Also, whatever you do after with the phone, once you request the unlock code from the moto website, they will consider your phone unlocked, hence no warranty. You can relock to try your luck and they just might not care if you are lucky.
Be very careful with locking bootloader though, locking your bootloader in a wrong way (wrong firmware, not flashing all files, downgrading) will create a big mess. In my opinion, stay away from locking bootloader!

thank you man, btw can you help me with rooting by flashing cwm ?
You need working adb and fastboot drivers.
Download here:
http://www.mymotocast.com/download/MDM?platform=windows (drivers)
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B1S0LCuXCnnmSWh6NGJmSE1BUWc (minimal adb and fastboot files)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2563599 (cwm download)
Guide:
1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47705438&postcount=6 (For unlocking bootloader)
2. After unlocking (which will be equal to a complete reset, no files left in your "sd card"), boot into fastboot mode again and use this command:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-6.0.4.7-falcon.img (or whatever is the name of recovery image file)
or use this tool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2635706
You can also use that too to push supersu to sd card or manually place it. Reboot to recovery (adb reboot recovery) and flash that zip file.
