For some reason I had a system update this morning. So I download it and my phone booted into cwm. How do I install the update from there? I seen apply update from SD and emmc. But it didn't work do I need the stock recovery to install? Anyone have a zip

You don't. You read before posting. And then you find out the phone needs to be completely stock, unrooted, nothing frozen, stock recovery. This question was literally asked 3 threads beneath yours.

I really hate to do this, but i've searched for a while now and can't seem to find anything that matches my situation.
i'm on stock 2.3.4, but rooted with a different kernel, boot image, and a different radio flashed. I realize that i'm not going to be able to install the update directly from my phone, but I can't seem to install the signed update file through cwm or the stock recovery I just flashed. cwm fails with a status 7 error, and stock recovery won't even let me bring up the menu to manually install the update.
i'm just wondering if I should flash a stock rom with recovery and then try to flash the update that way, or is there some other way that I could do it? I don't want to lose any data from my phone, and I would flash the full 2.3.6 rom instead, but I can't connect to the download link in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664.
once again, I really hate to do this, but I am pretty much stuck right now.
thanks

The 2.3.6 update for the i9020a was pulled by Google. There will be a new update released soon. I would wait.

Hi,
I'm currently using Koush's ICS Alpha 11, I've downloaded the official 4.0.3 version and tried to rename it "update.zip" and flash but it fails.
I'd really appreciate any help.
Thanks!
Did you go back to stock 2.3.6 and flash in stock recovery
BEST DAMN PHONE BECAUSE WE HAVE THE BEST DAMN DEVELOPERS!
Oh, so I should download this:
Android 2.3.6/GRK39F/UCKF1 Radio/KA3 Bootloader
Official, signed, can flash with ClockworkMod or stock recovery. Contains recovery, radio and bootloader.
... rename it to update.zip and then back into CWR and then ICS?
Download stock 2.3.6 and flash it you will loose clockwork mod.you have to do this to apply the official
Rename it to update.zip
In fastboot mode go to recovery and select it with your power button
When you see the android question mark hold up and power again
Choose apply update.zip and bam your done
I forgot get voodoo ota root keeper from the market and run it before flashing the stock rom
Good luck and keep ne posted

Can't seem to find FULL stock 2.3.6 for nexus S, some links floating around the web are just the update packs (around 12mb), not full.

There's a stickied post right here on the forums (this forum, in fact). It has every OTA released.

You do not need to go back to stock recovery. Do it all from cwm recovery.
Full wipe and flash the 2.3.6 from
Flash the ota file.
Reboot. The reboot into the os will flash the stock recovery

Hey guys, I'm in a similar situation too, I'm on Carbon ROM and I was waiting for a Stock update. So is there any way that I can update and keep the root? Because I think when I'll flash the stock 2.3.6, I'll lose root.
ok so I went back to 2.3.6 stock, and susprisingly I didn't lose my root/cwr or anything, then I went into recovery again and tried installing update.zip (which is ICS official stock) but the same error:
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
When you go back to stock you need to do a wipe.

I did wipe partition as well as cache. let me try again though.
Format everything but sdcard. Flash the official 2.3.6 T-Mobile rom. Flash the official ota update for said rom and your good. You would have to have a the 9020t model of course

How do I format? from PC? delete everything from the mounted usb volume?
From cwm recovery. Mounts and storage. Just DONT format your sdcard. Your backups are there.

I don't have clockwork anymore. I see limited options now, and the title on top is "Android System Recovery <3e>", but I do see an unlock icon when the phone boots.
You need to reflash clockwork from fastboot. When you load a stock os it overwrites the recovery

I have no clue how I did it couple months back, can you please point me to a guide that shows how to flash cwr on 2.3.6? many thanks
What rom that is on the phone does not matter . You just need to get your phone recognized on a computer with fastboot. Then flash the recovery from there. Or just boot the recovery directly from fastboot.

are you going to go around and say stupid crap in every thread now?

I downloaded the update from the system update button in settings. And it downloaded the update but I didn't install it yet. Is it okay to install it even though I am rooted? I just don't want to brick my phone

I tried to install and it failed. I am rooted.

As far as I know, you have to unroot to install the update.
There are also a couple other threads on this exact issue, in which myself and others have already explained how to accomplish this.
The key to successfully take/install ATT OTA updates is to be on stock rom (all bloatware intact and unfrozen), stock kernel, stock modem, and most importantly... stock recovery (3e). For me, didnt matter if I was rooted.

i have a tmobile galaxy s3. i had installed clockworkmod and it was rooted soon after i bought it. then i unrooted it not to long ago waiting for jellybean update. anyways, i got tired of waiting. tried to re-root the phone. cwm still on phone. then accidentally erased and resetted all data and info. lost all info on internal memory card. phone reset to original settings. now, when i try to reload cwm, it doesn't work.when i run odin, and install cwm, everything goes ok, it passes. but when i try to boot to cwm, it only comes up to the android recovery. tried multiple odins and cwm tar files. none seem to work. going crazy, need rooted phone again. pppplllllleeeaaassseeeee help!
flash it
if you are rooted but just need cwr fixed-up you could just go to playstore and download one click recovery flasher or rommanager and let the app flash it for you.
I cant get my ns4g to flash a diff recovery

Google the S3 QCOM Toolkit for all US varients. Download to ur laptop or computer and run the process. It just that easy. My SGS3 (atat) needed to be completely reset to facotry condition. When I got it back I used odin for a new recovery and root access but it always went back to stock recovery. Make use debugging is selected and it should take less than 5 mins.

Sorry I meant to say the S3 Snapdragon toolkit V2.3 which is the ALL-IN-ONE tool for all US SGS3 variants.

is there a way I can do this? I got the push notification from sprint today to update to jb 4.2.2. I've already downloaded the update (188 mb). Do I just install it over my current setup? Or would I have to remove my root and then re-install it when the 4.2.2 is on?

Yes. Voodoo ota root keeper, see my post over in the general photon q forum,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2268413
Also the update is 4.1.2 not 4.2.2 just so your not disappointed or suprised when its done.

Tried the voodoo ota root keeper, but when the phone initially rebooted, it went straight into the twrp recovery and didnt install, after that followed a bootloop. So i went into factory reset the phone and its stable now. So, how would i go about installing the update in this case?
Sent from my XT897 using Tapatalk 2
Also now that the phone is stable and i checked for the update, is says that the system is up to date :/. Since i already downloaded it, does anyone no the file path for it for where it might be?

I think it's usually in cache, and if you factory reset then that is wiped.
You should be on stock recovery if you want to flash the OTA directly.
J-Jeezy: Please edit the thread title so it's not misleading - the most current official Motorola firmware release for Photon Q is Android 4.1.2.
Not 4.2.2.
