What's up XDA I'm in the market for a new Tablet or laptop for my wife
and I'm looking seriously at either the G-Tablet or a mid-range laptop.
The way I see it the pros and cons of the G-Tablet are as follows:
Pro:
Android.
I love android.
Hardware.
There aren't too many tablets out that have hardware on this level.
Cost:
Compared to other Tablets this one is very reasonable for the specs
Hackability
I'm not new to Android (as you can see from my sig)
so the prospect of hacking this thing is exciting.
Cool Factor
Let's face it moving from laptops to tablet is just plane cool.
Cons:
Android:
As much as I love Android and it can handle 95% of what she needs.
There is that 5% of remanding programs that really only work well on Windows.
Cost:
I can most likely get more powerful specs from a laptop at the $350-400 price range.
Even though it won't be as cool.
No physical keyboard.
So what sold you all on the G-Tablet? Are you happy with the purchase?
A tablet and a laptop are different solutions to computing problems. I have a desktop, a netbook, and the tablet. It's not overkill. The desktop is my primary gaming system and research station, since it's multi-monitored. The netbook is what I take when I expect to be producing text - hence, the need for the keyboard. The tablet is what I take when my primary goal is consuming information. I use it as an eReader (Google Books, Kindle, and RepliGo Reader for annotating PDFs).
It beats carrying around as many books as I previously did, and the on-screen keyboard works well enough for most things. I also have a flexible/foldable/rollable USB keyboard (purchased from K-Mart for $14.99) that I carry around with the tablet as well should I find myself in need of entering a lot of text. That doesn't happen that much, but it doesn't take too much space in my messenger bag.
The real questions are: what does your wife want to do with this device? Is she consuming or producing? What applications are crucial for her use? What does she do with those applications?
Without an understanding of what you and she want the device to do, I don't think we can answer it. Form follows function. Focus on the function. That's more important than any of the criteria you listed above when it comes to selecting the form your information device should take.

i searched through the internet but there wasnt a solid answer to this question i could find.
the question is, which tablets have sim card support and if so how can i tell if the ones in retailers are different from ones offered from carriers.
like are there 2 models of galaxy tab 2 10.1? one with sim slot and one without? and could someone compile a list of all the current and popular tablets with sim card slots?
A tablet that does phone and uses AT&T or TMobil (assuming you're in the US) has a SIM slot. The SIM is used for the phone portion of the tablet on GSM phones. If the tablet doesn't have a phone, or it has a CDMA (Sprint, Verizon) phone, it has no use for a SIM card.

Classic "large" (10" or about) tablets can have a SIM slot too, even if NOT being able to phone. The reason is they allow 3G networking. If we are to cite another example, there is one on some Asus EeePads (not all models, so be careful when choosing).
Now the Eeepad is a bit special, as it has a true PC processor instead of most other models scaled-down 1 GHz ARM phone processors (the same my good old HD2 has already), and when you attach the separate mechanical keyboard to the tablet, you also get classical USB ports, allowing you to add a 3G dongle in case you bought a SIM-less model.
Apart form the Asus that's a bit out of the crowd (though not being more expensive BTW), you'll then have to check for the SIM slot when looking for a tablet.
Your question is of general interest IMHO. It wouldn't be a bad idea to keep a list of tablets with SIM slots to help people choosing, either here or on a dedicated topic, maybe put elsewhere (though I can't find where right now).

The reason is, I do need a mobile device, but it has to do ALL : phoning, taking notes and noting down meetings, firing alarms, email and web browsing, remote access to the company's billing and accounting software, and my Word and Excel documents handy. And all this, of course, has to be with me all the time.
So, of course, the 4.3" format is just perfect. So why would I want a tablet ? The answer is just "I don't want one. Period". Now, why would I would want one anyway ? Well, maybe because it would be more confortable to show documents to other people, or just to get a larger workspace, after all.

All documents automatically synchronize when you stuff the phone into the hatch behind the screen, so you can actually always have the exact same and up-to-date documents on each, allowing you to bring and use any of them (or both !) according to what you're going to do and where you're going to. A concept at least worth a look IMHO.

Very good input. The truth is i'm a sales rep at TigerDirect in Canada. And whenever a customer asks me if the tablet they like has sim support, i'd have to give them a general unsure answer. It's unfortunate because not all tablets have it, and the specs on most sites never really specify either. Furthermore, it's not very realistic to open a sealed box to check if there is. Especially if the customer might not buy. I think it'd be great if everyone on the forums contribute and compile a list of model numbers of tablets that contain a sim card of some sort.
as a user ot the samsung galaxy tab 7.7 i would recomed your customers one of the 7" tablets there are wlan only and wlan/3g devices for each model. with a 3g module it allowes you to send sms or use it as a general mobile phone.
the bigger tablets only use the sim for a mobile 3g internet connection not for sms or phone, like the 10.1.
the wlan only version of the 7.7 is the gt-p6810 and with 3g its gt-p6800.
in canada the tab should be available very easy, but in my country i had little problems to get one of the 7.7 (the old ones 7.0 , 7.0+ , 7.0 2 are easy to get)
because apple sued samsung and said that the 7.7 looks like an ******* ipad.
Oh, maybe we should launch a contribution to offer Apple staff some glasses ?
OK, you did sum up what I thought : 7" tablets either allow phoning or are WLan only, and 10" tablets or bigger are either 3G or WLan only.
Each maker apparently offers both, for the same generic model number, so customers (and sellers) have to be vary careful about small details printed on the box and/or small sub-numbers in the model reference that may help finding more information on the web (preferably on makers' websites rather than half-informed resellers').
It's quite a puzzle, so maybe opening a Wiki here on XDA to list the "good" references could help people sorting things out.

First of all Not sure if this is where it should be i thought putting this in off topic was too far from the point and reading through other threads it didn't seem to fit anywhere, Anyway i'll post it here anyway i would like to think most people on this website would appreciate this and see if i have to valid points and some cool things to show you maybe.
I would firstly like to start with some cool Android game consoles being developed by a company called JXD http://www.jxd.hk/ they're other companies doing this (not as good and more expensive) in my opinion but i'll supply information for you do to your own researched at the bottom of this thread.
Anyway This is the newest console released the S7300 just released a day ago it's quite amazing system and extremely cheap ( older models if you have a budget to test these out starting as low as $20 - $40 USD) This latest one is about $150 it's android the specs are listed here
As you can see the device has possibility for some good gaming and a start to some innovative ideas and maybe bigger companies creating devices similar to this.
What is the point?
Well i was a huge user of my Xperia play and Galaxy s3 which i recently sold for a Android iphone 5 rip off mainly because it looked good worked great and was light enough to go jogging without it annoying me, but this gave me a lack of gaming which i love about my android mobile so i decided to look for an android gaming device it took an hour or so but i found hundreds some on ebay some on random websites, after separating the over priced devices and the ones with poor design and bad hardware i found a website or 2 with the device i was going to purchase, and after looking all day i found there is a good start to this android gaming, but how come it hasn't set off bigger or faster yet, i find it a shame.
What to do?
Well many may disagree but this is the only website i use for anything remotely android related, but i was thinking if XDA could add apart of the forum for unpopular devices such as these underground branded ( Non rip off android devices and the emerging gaming android console and devices ) to increase the speed it picks up i believe if we have people talking about it more and helping sharing in customized apps themes etc... it might help set off the community to use it more which may encourage developers to add more support.
I mean Why Not! we have tablets but everything seems to be big brands Sony, Samsung, Apple, Nokia, i thought this was a website for unlocking your device for better use and doing things with it the majority of us think is "Cool".

Another product i thought would be good to mention just for the hell of it if you go jogging like me or like high quality sound with less wires and cheap at the same time would be to purchase a MW600 it's a Bluetooth headset and you just plug your headphone into it and it connects wirelessly to you phone.

for one the touch screen isn't the out dated touch resistant most others use.
First to have an actual dual analog joysticks! and not like the xperia play with the stupid touch slide which i found tedious after a day of use.
2 back buttons and simple nice thin design.

and does say it has 3G i don't know if it's via a sim card or it means through wifi tethering with another device who knows but i'm happy either way

These 2 websites have plenty mobile phones people could check out at a cheap price, the one i purchased because i wanted a decent phone that runs android but looks like an iphone 5 is zophone 5
It's a little more steep in price than the others but i managed to get it for £120 off ebay but its light and does what i need it to do.
Done more research the website most china branded (unbranded) mobiles are released to http://android-sale.com/
this website's most famous brand seems to be the goophone for the iphone 5 android clones but they also make some really good unique none clone designs packing quad core 2gb ram models, would be good if you're looking for some unique designed phone you won't see any friends using.

It has a dual core mali 400, and a dual core a9 clocked at 1.5, it should run most games other mali 400 devices run. I pre ordered one and now waiting for it. I hope it gets popular enough to have a community and a few custom rom builds. It has quite decent specs for emulation(main purpose its being promoted for) and should run almost every game on the android market. The main issue with JDX devices is battery life (is why I hope for custom roms), but the device claims to come pre rooted, you can see pictures of it supposedly having play store support, so if a community does surge for it it could be as popular as the kindle in terms of a dedicated community interested in custom android builds that support better battery use and remove some of its bloatware. im replacing the free 8g card ill get for pre ordering with a 32(64 if it takes it) card and have a decent 40gig snes/ps1 emulation device with touch controls that will let me do the basic things i do on my phone. Since i plan to tether it from my phone, I'm aiming to keep my phone pocketed the whole time, Headset calls, redirect texts to the JXD, and play/browse on the 7 inch screen so if a call comes in my gaming wont be interrupted something that ruins some games that reboot when a call comes in.
Maybe Padone 2 ? over 7k mAh, four core etc... Nothing but fine gaming devices with possibilities
They should make a special section in the forum for JXD Devices. Especially for developers that wants to help with making the device easier to use.

I'm looking for an Android phone, which fulfils all the following expectations:
Can be rooted and the bootloader can be unlocked [may require manual unlocking]
at least 5" display [may be a little less but not much]
fluidly running Android 5 (may be unofficial but stable) Very likely upgrades to newer Android versions.
And as many as possible from the following ones [assume they're equally important]
Slide-out QWERTY keyboard available. May use BT, NFC, I2C but should be a slide-out. May be be attachable, may be an extra accessory
Drivers decent enough, so as to be able to set up some alternate OS with libhybris.
Easy to disassemble and replace broken parts, especially the broken screen
A notification LED or an AMOLED display (both appreciated but not required)
At least 16G of built-in space (32G appreciated)
Price is an important factor for me. But I use phones for a very long time, (have used my Nokia N900 for 5 years now) so I may treat the phone as a longer-term investment.
I'll probably be spending much time in the terminal, hence I care about the hardware keyboard. I'm a hacker soul I'll probably be using the Debian chroot, ssh, vnc. Linux user.
I don't really care that much about the looks of the phone My phones fall a lot on the floor, so I'm not for an ultrafragile phone.
I need a decent camera (my current 5MP/720p N900 is ok. I don't count the megapixels, more interested in overall quality). Must be a phone.
I'm a Google-skepticist, so have nothing against it shipping Cyanogen, AOSP, etc as long as the functionality remains the same.
I don't do selfies, don't care about the front camera at all.
I know about Fairphone2 which fulfils everything but the hardware keyboard (it was mentioned as a possible extension but nothing real appeared yet). And is quite expensive (525€, plus accessories). Is there any chance it gets cheaper during the next year?
Would you suggest anything? Feel free to ask about my attitude to some functionality, which I care about and which not at all.
