What would you do? Contracts, phones, cancellations, and ideologies.

Alright, need some outside opinions on this. I want a new phone.
Currently, I'm on Verizon with the Droid 1. Its an excellent phone, and its been a lot of fun modding it, etc. Sapphire and Cyanogenmod have been awesome ROMs.
I've been disgusted with Verizon's, and Motorola's, actions over the past few months. From Moto's locking the bootloads on the Droid 2 and Droid X, to the essentially forced loading of Big Red's VCAST App store to the Incredible. I fully expect Verizon to disconnect their future Android phones form the Android Market in favor of their own VCAST App Store. There's also their whole Bing deal. It wouldn't bother me if I was able to change it easily, but that's not the case without rooting. Verizon's been a control freak in the past, and unfortunately, it seems the Droid 1 is going to be the exception.
While trying to stream some Flash based episodes from the web, the Droid 1 choked bad, even when OC'd to 1Ghz. Min and Max. Shoot, even connected to a PC's USB for power, the battery still drained on the thing. I want something more powerful.
Unfortunately, I am still on contract with Verizon for another year, breaking it carries a 115 USD fee.
Here's my dilemma. I like T-Mobile's myTouch 4G. Now that its been permarooted, bloat can be removed, Genius button remapped, etc, its a very nice phone. I had wanted to pick up one under their Even More Plus plans, however, that made the price too rich for my blood at present. But, it seems TMO's phased those plans out. So, if I want the Glacier, its 199 for TMO.com or 49-79 from Wirefly/Amazon. At 80 dollars, with the free activation offered by Wirefly or Amazon, the price becomes much more attractive even with the ETF from Verizon.
TMO does have a live HSPA+ network in my area. Verizon's LTE network is supposed to go live in December. I've heard conflicting reports for the launch of their 4G phones, everything from January 2011 to 3Q 2011. While I'm sure these phones will be very powerful(Tegra?), how locked down and crippled will they be?
According to TMO's website, my current phone is portable to their network, so I wouldn't have to change my number.
What would you do? If I decide to cancel the Verizon contract, where do I begin? A call to Verizon to cancel? I haven't gone all the way to the checkout at Amazon or Wirefly, is there a form for porting the number? Whats the best way to handle this? Or just wait and continue to give Verizon money despite my conflicts with their ideologies?

well i'll help a bit
you can call Tmobile and ask them to help you port the number to Tmobile, all you need is your account details, and then you talk to verizon to break the contract and pay ETF
2nd the droid is useless on tmobile as you know its cdma and tmobile is GSM
now the even more plus plan is there but you can only get in store or on phone its removed from the site to avoid confunsion
also amazon has a high ETF of $200 so if cancell the contract you have to pay the normal ETF + 200$

[Q] How to switch from Charge to GS2 next month

So I know there is a pool of people like me that recently purchased a Charge in order to get locked into an unlimited data plan. I assume there is also a smaller set of people, like me, who did this despite the fact they would have rather waited and purchased the Samsung Galaxy S2, but were forced into this decision because of the now enacted tiered data plans. With that being said and the recent news of the GS2 being released next month, I want to know if there is a way to switch from the Charge to the GS2, preferably without paying full retail for the phone (or adding a line). Any insight from current or former Big V employees or aggressive customers on how to go about this, if at all?

theres no guarantee it will be a verizon function (or whatever its called) released next month or that it will have lte *unless i missed a news story about that*
so odds are it ill just be tmo/att gsm versions followed by sprint, then vzw...hopefully the vzw one isnt the only 3g one
but no there is no way at launch you can get one on contract price without opening a new line

Well, this may not be any help to you, but it may help someone.
Best Buy Mobile is the only place that I know that still has a 30 Day exchange policy for Verizon. Unless the GS II comes out the first week of the month you would be out of luck. But you never know someone my be able to hustle one when it releases.

If you got it from costco you can return within ninety days

I have yet to see any news about the SGS2 on Verizon anytime soon. While it will hopefully be out in the next month or two, there are no guarantees.

My guess is that there will be a flood of used charges on craigslist when the gs2 releases.

The Galaxy S2 is the device I really have been waiting for but after having 4g speeds there is no way I can go back to a 3g device. As far as I know the S2 will not be LTE.

Ill be keeping my charge. Good enough to hold me off until upgrade comes.

You do know you didn't have to buy a new phone to be grandfathered into unlimited data,right? As long as you don't downgrade to a feature phone, you could continue having unlimited data for as long as you're a Verizon customer and don't downgrade.

I wonder if that new Verizon Samsung slider that's been wandering the interwebs lately is Verizon's SGS II...

I'm basing it off of not a single mention of LTE in the many many reviews online. We have leaked specs on the entire phone pretty much but not one place mentions LTE.

I haven't reviewed the specs of the gs2. Is it a dual core phone? Have you noticed all 4g lte phones are single core? What I was told by verizon is the lte connection somehow literally fries the current dual core processors thus resulting all the lte phones being single core and also why the droid bionic hasn't been released. To conclude my yapping is if the gs2 is a dual core phone then it's likely to be just for 3G.

I bought my charge at costco hoping to either get a bionic or gs2 but I'm very happy with my charge even umrooted... I haven't had the need for a dual core cpu and when I do I want a snap dragon dual core. I

I am a new customer coming over from Sprint. I was not satisfied with their service but stuck with them because they were more affordable and had unlimited everything. Preferred LTE over Wimax and made the switch a few days before the new tiered data plans. I could have gotten a reliable 3g phone for much cheaper, but I could not resist the LTE.

1. no one has reviewed (or seen) a VERIZON sgs2 yet which would be the only one capable of running lte atm
2. going by leaked roadmaps is pointless as some have said lte others not
3. we will have to wait and see, but that sammy slider WAS lte, and unlikely to be the sgs2...i think it ll be another refreshed sgs 1

Most likely the GS2 will be only 3g. Having tasted 4g on the Charge, I can't imagine going back to those slow speeds. However, I think it'll still be a top seller.

frankly though if it launches before oct the odds of 3g are greater...if its october+ i could see them marketing it as a big release

I seriously hate this. I have sprint and I am fed up with Android. And there is one wp7 available for sprint. Everyone says Mango, but where is the damn fruit already?
I don't want a small screen with a keyboard. If sprint doesn't get a better phone before/slightly after Christmas, I'm probably going to pick up the GSII.
The GSM carriers are loaded with various WP7 phones. Where is the love with CDMA?

Trust me, I feel your pain, there is only one device with Verizon...and I waited for ever for the base WP7 device.
The problem is that GSM covers about 85-90% of the world, not just the US.
When a company makes a phone for the global market, it will make the GSM models first because that is where the money is. After the profits start slowing down from the GSM models, then will go towards a CDMA market because there will be more profits to make.
Unless your carrier (Sprint in your case or Verizon in my case) wants a big OEM (HTC, Nokia, etc) to create them a custom phone for their network (and WP7 is not big enough for Sprint or vzw yet), you have to wait till the offer models and that does not show up for a year later.
Look at all the old flip phones, Moto for example, the razor, GSM had it over a year before CDMA carriers did, same deal.
So, if you want new phones on their release, you need to be with a GSM carrier or just wait, like most CDMA users have to....
I'm dreaming of a LTE (Verizon 4G) based WP7 device with a 4" SuperLCD/Super AMOLED display, a QWERTY keyboard, front camera with a good 10-12mp rear camera, dual core CPU and better GPU (for newer games), very slim design and a 2-3 day(real world) battery without making the phone huge. Who ever makes it, I'll buy it...
but, I guess one could dream......

That's y I left Sprint because of the lack of cdma love. Never will make that mistake again. T mobile service sucks in my area wish I had my DVP on Sprint Sero. But I hope Nokia shows us something today.

Yeah, wish I could leave Sprint, but $40 a month for unlimited data, text, mobile to mobile, nights and weekends, free roaming, 500 anytime. . . well you get the idea. As much as it pains me to not have as many hardware options, I don't feel as much pain when it comes to bill time.

I know this sucks lol. Do you think they will go towards CDMA this quarter or no? The phones are in high demand from what I've seen. People are just waiting.
I don't know, I might just go out and buy the arrive. Its just like the android shift, but with a tilting display and running WP7. I don't mind the 3.5" display, but coming from an EVO screen size, do you think that is too small or no?

No, unless Verizon/Sprint request(aka: Pay big $$$) for a custom phone, no, they wont rush out a model (Note: Carrier or MS, MS could request that CDMA phones are released on the same time).
Think about it, Sprint and Verizon are US companies only and on a global scale, CDMA accounts for around 10% but, I believe it's less. So Verizon and Sprint both combined would be about 4-6% of the worlds sold phones, if that. Even if everyone in Verizon and Sprint was requesting phones, would you as a company put all your effort to companies that account for less than 10% of your market ? I don't think so...

The 4.3" display ? Yea, it is a quite smaller and it might be too small for some people but, in the 3.5-3.8" is a good size for a phone that fits in your pocket.
Want my advice ? If you want WP7, pick up an Arrive off contract. You should be able to get one for under $300 (seen some used go on ebay for under $200 but, for the most part under $300, Just make sure you get one with a clean ESN). So if some new awsome model comes out for Sprint, you don't use up your 2 year contract and still can get a new phone.
That's what I did with my Trophy, still have a $100 credit towards a new phone and I'll hold it till there is a phone that I really want.
My Trophy is a nice phone and it will hold me out till then.....

Same sero plan I was on. Didn't help that my tp2 was almost non functional either. But I sure do miss my sero plan. Sprint service is better in my area than Tmobile. And I sure wasn't going to wait for that Tp3. I was not at all impressed with It so i just went and got the dvp with no contract.

The 4.3" display ? Yea, it is a quite smaller and it might be too small for some people but, in the 3.5-3.8" is a good size for a phone that fits in your pocket.

Yeah that is a really good idea... CDMA phones are always last for everything. If I can pick one up for 200 or less, I'll just do that then. But hopefully one comes out by then.
If not, I guess I'll buy the GSII. Unless I can buy an unlocked trophy and use it on sprint? Is that possible? I don't really like physical keyboards.

The Arrive is a great phone - you will be happy with it, and the screen is big enough, especially since you have a nice keyboard.
But I imagine you are like me, and want a nice candybar form-factor, like the GSII. Hopefully Sprint will get one this holiday season, but until then, the Arrive is a very nice phone.

Yeah I am going to wait. I for sure do not want any other Android other than the GSII. I personally wish the hardware was up to date with WP7, but what can you do. At least it has a nice HD display.
Probably will check it out again tomorrow. I'm ready for a phone to actually "work" without a hassel of "oh **** I forgot the flash that fix", or "my battery is draining, I need to kill more apps, change kernels, switch CPU settings, blah blah blah blah blah."
Why are Androids even called "smartphones"? They have more problems than a farmer trying to grow crops in the winter. Its just pointless lol. I never play games, I go on facebook, (can't even sync anything = battery dead), check emails, and Reddit time to time.
WP7 would be perfect for me lol.

Galaxy nexus vs. galaxy S 3

My original galaxy s is getting long in the tooth. I'm due for an upgrade. I was thinking of going with the new S 3 when it comes out, but if its 300$, I think they'd a but much for a phone, and was thinking of getting the nexus.
Do you think that the nexus will still be a decent phone 2 years from now when I can upgrade, our should I get the S3 to keep me until june 2014?

Is 2 years a hard or soft limit? (i.e. contract or no contract?) I'm planning on keeping my Nexus for two years, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.
The good news is that the nexus is cheap (off google play or expansys) hence good for buying unlocked. I would not buy it from Verizon, for instance; the updating status on the CDMA variants is questionable.
(Also, yeah, S3 hardware buttons sux.)

id prefer the s3, because of its outstanding benchmark, and some new features in smartphones but the design nexus is better,

I would recommend against the verizon version of the nexus, for the reasons above. Though of course, my opinion is not the end-all.
Buying a phone outright gets you more flexibility and, if you go with prepaid, lower costs overall. As you said, you have to wait > 18 months to get a new one under your plan [and you'd have lost out, with your increased rates, if you don't]. I can get my next phone anytime [and am subject to low rates all the time]. My nexus, for example, is definitely good for this year, but I don't want to count on my prophetical powers for anything longer. If it gets broken, or just plain outclassed, I want to be able to grab the newest thing on the market right away.
(Note: Prepaid vs contract is a much more complicated issue than I might have made it sound above; you'd have to shop and probably have to use something besides Verizon, for one thing.)
Another recent thing to note: Verizon is removing unlimited upgrades (you'd be forced onto a tiered plan), though you can keep your old plan if you get your new phone on your own.

I'm not sure what the exact pricing is, but for arguments sake, lets say that the nexus is 200 with contact, and 400 without, pushy the going rate 400? How would you get out any cheaper? And I'm sure no where near $200.

The price differential over 24 months adds up.
For example, T-mobile has a $30 100 minute 5 gig prepaid, and Straight Talk has a $45 unlimited prepaid; there are others to shop around for, but those are the most commonly cited. Assuming you even get the cheapest Verizon plan, $40 (450 minutes talk) + $10 (1000 smses) + $30 (2 gb data) = $80 (per month)
Verizon's $80/month is already $35/month more than ST. That means you save $840 over 24 months by going even the more expensive prepaid. (Compared to this, the puny $200 subsidy is nothing.)
For the t-mobile plan, the differential is a whopping $50, and you save, holy hell, $1200 over 24 months.
In other words, the subsidy is just a psychological scam make you think you've got a discount, when really, the higher prices per month make all the difference.

But I'm hoping to sign a new contract and keep my grandfathered unlimited plan. I'd liked to upgrade to the S3 with unlimited grandfathered LTE, but that's hoping that the S3 is available before Verizon starts pushing the shared data plans (at which point I can't upgrade to LTE and keep unlimited data).
If the S3 isn't coming out before then, then I'm thinking I should just get a Gnex so I can start enjoying unlimited LTE data.

Wow, I've never thought about it that way. I always thought those other providers offered a lower level of service? I know t mobile has crap service around here, so you can't be using all of verizons network.

"Lower level of service" is just company propaganda. The only relevant question is which one offers good enough service for you, for the cheapest price. And unfortunately, there's no easy way to answer that except to try them out, preferably cheapest to most expensive. Even reviews aren't all that relevant, simply because service can vary so wildly depending on location. Thankfully, prepaid is a natural platform for "just trying a service out", but it does require a compatible phone.
I don't know what you mean by "tmobile using all of verizon's network"; they're completely distinct. Straight talk (and many others) are carried over AT&T and t-mobile's networks, though.

As far as the network goes, I thought tmobile used verizons network, because when 4g came out, they were the only other ones saying they used 4g lte. So I just assumed they used verizons network.

I'm in a similar situation, right now I'm waiting to see what the S3 looks like in the US. If its not to my liking I'll probably get the Nexus, and a + for the Nexus is it will be getting Android 5.0 aka Jellybean. I would also buy it from the Google Play Store so it doesnt have any bloatware, however that is $299.

If you've made it this long with the Galaxy S, I say wait for the next Nexus. Especially with the rumors of several different manufacturers being able to build their own Nexus device.

I would take the samsung nexus. The S3 doesn't offer enough power difference in my opinion to spend the extra money on. Most of its software features aren't that good imho. And if they are you can find a similar app on the market for it.

Have you heard anything about the S3 US version being dual core? because i would think that the Nexus being Dual Core, vs the S3 being quad core would be a big difference.
I'm going to have to look around to see when the next nexus is getting released.
my S1 annoys me a bit, but maybe i'm just getting the itch to get a new phone. every once and a while it stops responding to touch, if you hit the power button, and then unlock the phone again, its been coming back. also, playback skips when i first start playing something in dog catcher, and some games... yeah, I know.. i guess its more of an itch than anything else, but at least this way, i can make an informed decision if/when my phone completely dies.
i am running gingerbread rom, i recently reinstalled it from scratch, and then reinstalled my apps, but its still the same.
I guess i'll try and hold onto this phone as long as i can. I do like the service with verizon, and get a hefty discount from my job, so i'm a bit weary to switch carriers.

S3 LTE will most definitely be a dual core, because no quad core supports LTE.
Rumors about Nexus launch date say thanksgiving.

There is no 4g; it hasn't come out yet. The 4g standard requires 1Gbps data, while LTE is capable of max 300Mbps data and, in practice, can get as low as a single-digit Mbps. See this article for more information. Basically, the marketing departments here in the US realized they could get away with calling crap 4G, and that's what we have now.
The much more relevant question is how fast a particular service is in your area (because it can vary so wildly), and that can't be answered by anything except trial and error.

[Q] Who is upgrading to the S7 or S7 Edge?

Today was the big unveil of the 2 new Galaxy S7 devices - 5.1" S7 and 5.5" S7 Edge.
Visually, there isn't much change. But from the inside, quite a bit.
Will you be upgrading to one of the new Galaxy S7 devices?
I, for one, will be going to Best Buy on Tuesday to place my preorder.

-4GB of RAM
-Bigger screen but still one-handeable (for me) with its 72 mm width & curved back
-Better camera with faster autofocus & low light performance
-Fast wireless charging

-Change of scenery with the silver titanium color
I'm eligible to renew a new 2-yr contract after paying a $250 early upgrade fee, which I'll recoup after selling my S6E.

S7E may be sexy, but don't expect any Dev support. Smartphone-wise, I've been playing in these forums with the 6600, 6700, vogue, mogal, touch pro, touch pro 2, diamond, evo 4g, evo 3d, m7, S3, note2, m8, g3, s5, and s6 edge. All Sprint variants. It used to be normal to see 10-15 new ROMs each day on those phones. Now that smartphones are even more common than over a decade ago, I would expect activity to have blossomed significantly. Instead, developer interest and activity had been extraordinarily weak.
You can thank Samsung for most of that, and their wonderful Knox system, but also it seems that the Sprint forums don't have the stream they used to. Very disheartening.
So if you're eyeballing a new Samsung phone, you better like it plenty without root and without any customizations.

Only chance of getting custom roms and stuff is getting the full unlocked variant.

This thread alone is a good indicator of how much dev support/community interest there will be for the Sprint variant S7. G3 -> G4, M7 -> M8 threads would have had 100+ posts by now.
Luckily these phones are PRETTY GOOD stock-- I feel much better than some of those older phones, but not as good as they became after root. My biggest complaint is that I want AirAudio to work, and that requires root. Very frustrating. I still find it nuts that we don't get true administrative rights to our own phones. Could you imagine if you bought a laptop, and you weren't allowed to log in as Administrator or root? That wouldn't fly for a second!

I joined Sprint when I got my Galaxy S2 and I did notice a huge activity decline starting from the S5 series. The international unlocked variants continue to have a lot of activity still.

I'll be getting the S7 Edge, but switching to Verizon thanks to Sprints lack of customer service. They put me on the wrong plan and said now I can't upgrade yearly like they promised and refuse to do anything about it. After over 9 years of service with Sprint, it's time to move on.

The only reason I'm on Sprint is the unlimited data. As I understand it, I'll technically lose that when I sign a new lease, or whatever. I believe they are trying to get rid of grandfathered unlimited data people. Until then, I'll probably stick with 'em.

Nexus 6p will be my weapon of choice next time, switching to project fi as well, need the front facing speakers that I had with the m8 downside is lack of sd card but will get larger storage to make up for it

After 10 yrs of Loyal Sprint service they cancelled my service for to much "unlimited data" usage (I was at a 2 yr low when they did)!
Too much "unlimited data"? Yep, I later found out that they monitor anything over 20gb!
Basically they screwed me and I'll take any chance to bash their weak network!
Oh well, the network is crap and data speeds can't even compete with Tmo!
You'll be happy with the upgrade of phone and carrier!

Thanks man, but they have left me no choice. They admit that the screwed up but say they can't fix it. They did offer me a $50 credit, which I told them where they can stick it. I'll miss you guys and gals as well, thanks for all the support, it was a lot of fun.

Seems like you were abusing the network if you were consistently going over 20gb each month. Sounds like you were tethering. Anyhow, when you compare to the other carriers, Sprint still has the best data rates, and most lenient 'unlimited' plans.
