Cleaning a TPU case - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

okay im looking to clean this white TPU case I have for my 1X but it's like it's impossible. Ive tried soap and water, bleach, windex (lol) in hot water, warm water, soaking it for hours and nothing works. I just want it to be white again....any suggestions besides buying a new case?

Steal a new case?

TPU by nature absorbs things, but doesn't release them easily. There really isn't way to bring it back to the original white color.
I bought a clear TPU case that turned a dingy yellow in about a month. My advice, only buy darker colors if you are getting tpu.

AJerman....that was funny lol I think that's my best option seeing KindaTired's response lol thanks to you both

I had one and Tried about everything too. I had on with white sides and a clear hard back. After everything I tried brake cleaner. The break cleaner seemed to work, but it made the back hard plastic crack. Mine was turning blue from my jeans. It took the blue off but left the ugly yellowish color still....
www.handhelditems.com has a lot of white tpu cases. they were $4 when I bough them and I decided to be 5 so when they turn nasty i throw them out. hope that helps

I'm actually looking to dye a translucent TPU case from clear to black. Does anyone know if there are dyes that will absorb into and not bleed or rub off of TPU? I don't want something that will end up staining my clothes when I put in in and out of my pocket.

ESdesigns, just paint the inner side of the case with acrylic paint and a few coats will make it solid black (or any color really). After that make sure to use some clear coat over the paint to protect it, and thats it. And if you wanna keep it clear but tint it with a certain color just use ink or semipermanent hair dye (like manic panic, arctic fox, stargazer, etc) and again just apply a coat of the coloring on the inner side of the case and leave it for like half an hour, maybe an entire hour to be sure, then rinse. It'll be tinted but will remain clear.

Anyone think the White will smudge easily?

Because the phone has a matte polycarbonate build, I'm thinking the white will smudge. I'd be scared to put it in my pockets because the dye might bleed onto the phone or perhaps the dirt from my hand might cause it to smudge. But the phone is so sexy I don't want to have a case on it. What does everyone think?

I've got one and it does smudge. It cleans pretty easy but the white matte finish has a tendency to collect some color from a pocket or a drop. Not a big deal, just wipe it off, but I'm probably going to get one of the HTC cases when the come out. Not really because of smudging, but more because the phone is pretty slick and can be hard to hold and use one handed.
Well if you keep wiping it off eventually the dirt will soak into the body leaving it looking yellowish/greyish.
I saw one in the store that had a smudge on it. I tried wiping it off but it just smeared into the body.

alcohol wipes will make it bright white again
I have the gray and my wife has the white one (International) I just ordered the white one on AT&T pre-order. My gray shows finger prints a lot easier than my wife's white. Both smudge but white seems clean wipes easier than the gray.

the gray is going to have a tendency to show oils more. i've already ordered one of the HTC cases to take care of that matte back so no worries.
From what I read yes. But I also read that it can be solved with an eraser!
Polycarbonate is pretty tough (and hard to form), I don't think it would stain.
Should clean easily, the texture is what would collect any color or smudges.
Skin
This is easily solved by using a skin. I ordered a skinomi full body skin for my One X. That way, you still retain the beauty of the phone (Color and Size) and don't have to worry about smudges, yellowing, or scratching.
I've noticed some scratches are already appearing on the back of my white One X, along the "hump" that the phone lays on (along the beats logo). It looks as if the matte surface is becoming polished to a glossy finish.
Not really noticeable yet unless a) you're looking for them and b) you hold it in the right light, but it's only been three days. I wonder how it will look after a week, month, year...
Fingerprints really aren't noticeable unless held in the light. I've been carrying it my jeans and haven't noticed any dye transfer.

That's why I already have a case for mine!
Rabble rabble rabble.
I plan on getting mine ghost armored as soon as I can. I have done this on all my phones. Another thing I found worked wonders was a little hand sanitizer and a soft cloth. It always worked for me for cleaning all my white devices.

The only problem could be that if this phone has any anti stain coating the alcohol might eat it away? I could be totally wrong though.

Is the backplate prone to scratching off the grippy-gummy substance it's covered with

I don't really know how to call that coating and am not even sure if it's a coating or the whole backplate is made of the material that gives the grip. I just want to know if it's going to get scratched/scraped off by usage because this will pretty much determine if I'll get a case for the phone or not. I never had a case on my phone before and I don't really want one unless I'll need one. And I'll need one if it's required to keep my phone in perfect condition.
I assume it will, but covered it with a silicone case an ghost armor on the front.
The camera bulge made case necessary for my usage.
Of course YMMV some, but it seems the front glass likes to shatter easy on side hits, at least from what I've read.
So back plate scratches would be the least of my concern with that camera glass bulge.
Don't know if that helps, but it didn't cost you anything to read it ?

I got mine at launch and never put a case on it. Mine is scratch free on the back and the glass. Just don't put it in your pocket if its full of diamonds.
The soft touch plastic can get scratched by keys or even coins. Same can be said for the white glossy sides.

The white and black versions are a bit different. As far as i have heard the black one is harder to scratch. And it has the same material all around. As opposed to the white one with gloss added.

Well, it's always sitting in my pocket alone, but I also dealt with some other stuff that was covered in this substance and by normal usage the substance scratched off so that's why it raised my concern. Plus I had HTC HD2 which also had it's backplate covered in something (not this substance though) and it also got scratched up pretty badly by daily use (I really care about my phones) and it was in my pocket alone.
I've had the phone for almost two months now and have yet to use a case and it's still scratch free. I would just make sure to keep whatever pocket you use for your phone empty at all times except for the device itself. The only issue I have is getting dust out of the edges of the screen where the plastic meets the glass...easily fixed with a duster air gun or just using a thin piece of paper and sliding it through the grooves to remove the dust.

Not sure which scratches easier but both are susceptible to scratches by metal or even hard plastic unlike the Gorilla Glass screen. Case in point being the hard cases scratching both the soft touch and glossy coatings alike.

Something to consider regarding the Orange neo

I just scratched the orange plastic top cover of my new Wild Orange Neo, and it is white plastic underneath a thin coating of orange color. this is disappointing, because I chose plastic over the metal one so I could buff out scratches when they occur. With regards to normal watches, I like stainless steel cases the best because I know how to remove any dings or scratches in the finish. I typically do not buy any watch with any type of coating on the surface which prevents you from being able to refinish it.
One thing that strikes me as odd, is that the lower half of the case looks like it is solid orange, not coated orange.
****** It appears, thankfully, that I was technically wrong about it being white plastic underneath a surface coating. After studying both the orange and black ones after scratching them, is that the plastic is of the type that turns white when scraped. As long as the remaining surface is rough or little edged of it are sticking out, they appear white. You can remedy that with 600 grit wet or dry black sandpaper (or any other favorite watch case refinisher that you are used to using). It just needs to be a smooth surface again, to prevent it from looking white. ******
I feel much better about them now. Sorry about that. (I don't however, like the ease with which the bodies are scratched)

Removing paint from metal sides

What are people's thoughts on removing the black/white paint on the metal sides so that the whole trim is silver/brushed aluminium? Good or bad idea?
What would be the best way to do it? Rubbing lightly with a scourer while holding a vacuum nozzle nearby to make sure fine particles don't get into the phone?
Some sort of solvent?
What sort of problems could occur?

Sorry to say but it sounds like a bad idea.. How do you know it's all brushed silver underneath? I guess, as long as you don't scratch it with too much force, you will be fine.. Not sure about the parts surrounding the antenna's though
First, the material is definitely not silver. Most likely aluminum unless samsung went with magnesium like moto did.
From careful inspection the shiny aluminum bezel is not a single piece along with the painted frame so I can't guarantee you that they are even the same material and appear the same once the paint is stripped off.
Finally, paint seems highly unlikely. Note 3 had painted plastic frames which deteriorated very quick. If it's using aluminum my best guess would be that it's been anodized.
Not an expert but to get rid of anodizing I believe you dunk the material in a pool of solvent which I definitely don't think you want to do with your phone.
I definitely wouldn't try to remove it by rubbing it, you would end up with uneven areas.

I probably should have said silver coloured not silver as I agree that the material is definitely not silver. I have noticed some people mentioning that their note 4/note edge had easily developed scratches on the coloured part of the frame. I was wondering if this meant the coating was not extremely hard to remove. If a very gentle abrasive pad was rubbed along the sides in a consistent lengthwise motion, do you think that it would scratch it enough to expose the metal underneath? I am not really considering this for myself as I am super careful with my phones (although I don't use a case) but if someone's sides got very scratched up then would this be an option to hide the scratches within many small scratches (brushed look)?
I agree that we can't really tell what is under the coating in terms of colour or joins etc.

Unless you have worked with aluminum before and have extensive experience in working with it. I doubt that even if you could rub it off you would never be able to do it evenly.
Basically you will do more damage than you would hide most likely
I can see it now people opening up phone body shops for custom paint jobs..and not just screen repairs. .lol

Its aluminium underneath the paint.
Its aluminium underneath the paint. Atleast for the white model. Just a thick coat of white paint over the aluminium. Saw a demo phone's paint chipped due to a dent so I know for sure.

Ya if this ever happens I'll just let it all chip haha I doubt I'd be ever be able to get a smooth finish once again.
I don't think it will ever chip off. The finish is very well done and nothing like the paint over plastic of previous galaxy phones.

Need help removing discoloration from a brand new clear TPU case

I just bought a Nillkin Clear TPU case for my phone and after a few days, I noticed some blue and red discoloration near the power button. How do I remove this without damaging the case? The red spot is probably ink, but I don't know. The blue is probably from my denim jeans (though in a few days of use, it shouldn't have discolored that quickly) or from the blue microfiber cloth that I use that bleeds dye when wet.
