Which SSD Cards for DS - HTC Desire S

Which SSD cards will work with and are best suited for the Desire S?
At the moment I have a 2Gb Scan disk that came with the phone and I want to get a 32Gb if preferable but want better speeds.

It isn't an SSD (Solid-State Disk) card - it is a microSD card. HUGE difference
From experience - and what I seem to remember being posted here before - there is no real point in going above a Class 6 card. I am running a Sandisk 32GB Class 4 and it is more than good enough for storage, music, photos etc.

So getting a class 10 won't help with access/write speeds? Is there any specific reason as to why you say so?

Have a search through the DS forums as I can't be bothered to do it for you. I seem to remember that anything faster than a Class 6 is wasted as the DS can't actually read/write any faster than that.

It is pointless to have such cards in a phone, who needs to handle small files randomly. Class 10 and 6 are designed to write/read large files quickly (photography).

Best 16gb sd card for apps2sd?

ok i got a nexus one and im using apps2sd I want more memory like 16gb I can get a class 2 for like 40 bucks but im under the impression that i need a class 4 or 6 what's the best for the money or should I just get the class 2? I mean im using a class 2 card now and I've had no problems with it
I cant seem to find a higher class card. I would really love one. Right now i have a class 4 4gig. I would also love an upgrade soon
For linux swap on the SD card you'd want a higher class card, but is it really critical for Apps2SD? Most of the Class 2 cards have a fairly respectable read speed - it's the write speed where they fall down. The main area you might notice a slower card would be on installing new apps. I'm not sure if your Apps2SD solution includes storing app data on the card, but the performance impact of that would depend on how much data the app keeps locally.

btw i use the 16gb a-data card and have no issues at all...it a much better price point compared to the newer 32gb cards at over 200 bucks
I'm using a class 2 16Gb SanDisk card and haven't had any issues with it.
Write speed can be a little slow, as someone mentioned. So installing large apps can take a little longer.
The /data directory is still on the internal storage, not on the card.
I don't have a Swap partition on my card either.
Music, movies, games, and apps have all been fine using app2sd on CM 5.0.5.3.
I got the Ridata class 6 from newegg when it was available for $48. reviews/speed are good.

I can answer The class thing the higher the class the faster it reads and writes which it recommends nothing below a class 4 for hd video recording at present in got a 16gb class 6 works great just wanting more space

yeah true would make it harder to now if you getting real deal, probly only way to know your getting what you ask for is import from a decent website. but you can always test the class of sd card by it transfer speed on pc as a class 6 should be able to transfer at around 6mb/sec if im right. but can your pc read/write at 6mb/sec i know mine can't lol
I'm pretty sure mine does... an i7

The class shows the minimum read/write speed of the card as shown below
Rating Read (Mb/s) Write (MB/s) Class
13× 16.0 2 2
26× 32.0 4 4
40× 48.0 6 6
66× 80.0 10 10
It is possible that a Name brand class 6 card, could out perfom a no name class 10 card as the speeds are minimum, I would tend to avoid anything slower than class 4 as it MAY introduce lag involving SD read/write operations
To those who have 32gb cards, what brands are they?
Contemplating between transcend and sandisk. transcend is a bit cheaper though. I just dont know anyone who can vouch for transcend.
I bought one from MyMemory.co.uk, just their own branded ones was about £52 class 4 couldn't be happier with it

On looking up the official standards of MicroSD cards http://www.sdcard.org/developers/tech/sdhc/ it only talks about differences in speed ratings such as class 2, class 4 ect. So I assume that HTC are advertising the Desire HD as only supporting class 2 MicroSD cards. I would like to know if anyone can confirm if using the USB cable to transfer data to a PC is actually getting faster speeds using a higher class MicroSD card than class 2 standards?
HTC isn't saying that the DHD supports class 2 only it just doesn't specify. (the micro-sd 2.0 thing is completely different to what you're thinking about the 2.0 means it supports micro-SDHC not that it supports class 2 only. and about the speed difference, I have a class 2 8GB micro-SDHC and that writes at 2MB/s and reads at 4MB/s, a class 4 16GB that writes at 4MB/s and reads at 5MB/s, and finally a class 10 32GB that writes at 12MB/s and reads at 15MB/s. (All tested on my Desire HD) So there is a HUGE difference between classes 2 , 4 and 10 when copying through USB.
Hello,
what class 10 32GB do you have?

It's actually class 4. :]
From what ive seen and heard is that its not neccesarily the class that determins the speed as it is the manufacturer. Sandisk from my understanding has the fastest cards out and that is in part why you pay a premium price for them. My buddy bought a 16gb class 10 , I honestly do not remember the manufacturer, and his old 8gb class 4 sandisk is way faster according to him. He was pretty pissed after finding that out.
I have a 32 gb Sandisk (class 2) in my Inc and I store all of my music and video on it.
I even have a couple of full 2 hour videos on it. I experience no lag or any other issues with it.
I have also installed the "Let's Golf 2" app from the leaked TB RUU on it and it runs flawlessly.
The only place where the speed is any issue for me is putting large files on the card, it is slow. But once the files are there the read speed is fine.
Sent from my Incredible using Tapatalk
As far as Sandisk over the last 5 years I have had 3 cards corrupt themselves and die. Usually it is within 6 months.
Since I switched to Kingston branded cards. From what I understand they are also sandisk but the batches that didn't meet standards for Sandisk themselves.
Anyway I've had this 16GB Kingston for well over a year and works faster than the Sandisk.
If any card would fail it would be running XDAndroid off the sd card like I am now.

Whatever class it comes with will be fine for me. I just can't wait for the xtra 16gb of storage. I know for most people that 16 is plenty, but with all the roms on my 16gb card, and switching it between my fascinate and incredible plus my 5gb of music that 16gb disappears quickly. I do like having the 8gb internal of the droid x but undone ever see myself using it all until androids apps get more polished, and with polish they will grow in size very fast. I can't wait til we has a preloaded maps that can work without cell signal!!! Go tbolt!

Go for a class 10. I really notice a difference using my SLR camera when I swap between a Class 6 and the 10 - the 10 being way faster.

Class 10 all the way. I have a class 10 and it's slow, I wonder how slow will a lower class be.
I use class 10 cards in my DSLR, and would normally recommend them, however after installing CM7 on a microSD for my mother's nook color everything I read said your better getting a SanDisk class 2 than anything else, even in class 10. Apparently there is not a good standard for rating cards. I would recommend looking up specific benchmarks and choose from them.

I would not suggest a class 2 card as Android has issues reading it due to it being too slow. I have used class 4 and class 10 and I can feel a huge difference in the read and write speed.

Careful when buying sandisk especially online. There are some bad apolss out there selling improperly marked sd cards which say class 10 but really are just class 2.
Well Class 2 guarantess you 2MB/s, Class 6 6MB/s and Class 10 10MB/s.
6 is enough, 10 is better, see what you can afford.
Probably a tradeoff between speed and space.
Check how much space you really need.
Is it class so important?
I mean..when you have a class 4 isn't just enough for a smartphone?

For just having media files on there, probably.
If you start putting apps to be run from there, you wan't as much speed as possible.
I think it much more depends on your ROM, not your external card. I have installed my apps on the ext2 partition and it does not appear to have any differences.

From personal experience, the speed of the card makes a big difference for the Desire because of all the app2sd games.
As someone mentioned before, brand and the store are also very important.

I was thinking of this link coming into this thread, it needs to be a forum-wide sticky. For a camera, a class 10 would most definitely be required. But for Android, there does not seem to be a consensus.
Good luck
you should buy a class 10 dude samsung or another
Go for a class 10. If you aim for sales and such, you can get one for the normal price of class 6 cards.

I'm considering purchase of this phone - sounds like support for a micro SDcard works well, so is there any benefit to buying the 64 or 32GB internal storage models vs. the 16GB model? I can capture video and do TWRP backups to the (relatively inexpensive) SDcard, so what am I missing on a cheaper 16GB phone?

Is the Moto X a UHS-I or UHS-II compatible host device? The extra cost of these higher-end sdcards would be wasted otherwise, correct?
Edit - I googled this topic and found this post: https://forums.motorola.com/posts/8cda627ead . In short, it confirms that the Moto X benefits from / takes advantage of a UHS-1 U3 microSD card. @EmperorX makes a good suggestion.

Can you report on the relative performance of your higher-end microSD card vs. the internal storage? For example:
compare the time it takes to do a TWRP backup of the whole phone to internal vs. the microSD card
Capture full QHD video directly to the microSD card
etc.
Thanks!

Maybe... But don't expect it to. Internal memory is much faster than even the fastest SD card. If you must use your SD card as internal storage for apps due to space, then move low usage apps to external card and heavy use ones to internal
