Watching Movies - Any issues - Asus Transformer TF700

I have this weird problem. When i first got this device, i could drop a 4gb mkv (without conversion) on my memory card and watch it with no issues. As time went on, i havent been able to do so. Its hard to pinpoint exactly when this started happening. But heres the issue, i placed several mkv and mp4 movies on my memory card. I would go to play them using BS Player ( i also tried the stock app) and sometimes they would play, and sometimes they wouldnt. The times they would play, if i were to exit out of the movie, go to another app, and then go back to the movie, the movie would not play and the app would force close. I have tried putting my movies on different cards as well as directly on the device, and the device still wont play the movies properly. So, after the force close, about 5 minutes later, the tablet will reboot. I was having this issues before rooting (this actually made me want to root) and after. I just wanted to know if anyone esle experienced anything like this. I also tried playing movies from the USB port and SD card in the dock and still have the issue.
At first i thought it was a memory card issue so i went and got a 32gb, and still have the problem. The i thought it was a format issue. I formatted one to fat32 and the other to exfat, and still experience this. Then i thought it was the app itself, and i downloaded other alternatives and it still happens.
Also, let me add this one bit, is also happens with music that i have stored on the card and the device. Poweramp nor Google Music will play the music. I get the same force close and reboot each time.

I haven't tried playing a 4gb mkv file or anything similar, but I am able to watch smaller ~400MB mkvs off my microSD card (32gb) with no problem. I also regularly play music off of the microSD as well, and have never had a force close or restart because of it.
Have you tried a different memory card?

I have tried a sandisk and an aData. Question, do you keep your movies and music in folders on your memory card? If so, do you have a folder with the same exact names on your device? I had my movies and music in folders marked Movies and Music respectively on the memory card. I also had folders with the same name on my device. i renamed the ones of the card to Videos (there is a VIDEO folder on the device as well) and Albums and now the problem is not there. Might be a bug

I keep my music in a "music" folder in the root of my memory card, and my videos in a "video" folder as well. On my internal storage I have a folder named "Music" but its capital M instead of lower case. I do not have a video folder in my internal storage. Yet I haven't had any problems like what you mentioned.
But im glad its working now!
If it comes back I guess you could always do the common factory reset procedure to see if that helps. It doesn't seem like a hardware problem (like a device reader problem) because its persistent across different memory card types.

Not a bug per se, however some apps might not behave nicely. Read this thread, it might help you understand the issue. So, to work around it, avoid having multiple directories that only vary in upper/lower case, when they are in the same directory.

Makes sense then. I still wonder if anyone else has experienced this.
Edit: this is not the issue. I deleted the folders from my device called Movies and Music. On my card, i now keep them in folders called Flicks and Albums. There are no duplicate files on the device, but yet i am still having this issue.

ok, so i renamed the folders on the card. performed a hard reset and installed only bs player and poweramp. No issues. I kept going in and out of the apps to make sure the issue didnt come back. After several attempts, it did not surface. I proceeded to install all of my apps and still no issue. I did all of this yesterday morning. Fast forward to now, and the issue still has not come back yet. I guess i solved the problem....for now.

Great :good:
Maybe you can "mark" the topic as solved when it keeps running fine for a few days.

it came back. lol
I think Volume+ is the cause of the problem. I removed it for now. There is a notice that it doesnt work with JB, but it works on my nexus which is running JB.

I'm thinking some apps don't like the delay of the remounting of external storage when the app is running when the tab is put to sleep.

Is your media on the microSD? If so, then this is a common with tablets (not phones). The apps are still designed with phones in mind, where the microSD slot is /sdcard. But, on our device, /sdcard is the internal memory and /sdcard2 is the microSD.
The zPad firmware manages to get around this issue by mapping the microSD card as a subfolder under /sdcard, so apps can find content there.

roebeet,
Is that a prossiblity in a futre upgrade to TNT Lite? I bought a 16gb microSD card yesterday and it's pretty useless other than a storage device.

I tried doing this awhile back, but failed. I think that the TnT framework expects the microSD to be on /sdard2. It's a combo of the init.rc and the vold.fstab, so ideally we should be able to change it if TnT hadn't thrown us a curveball.
I personally am OK with it as /sdcard2. I play videos off file explorer and music off the app "Andless" (which can scan /sdcard2). And ACV for comic reader can also scan /sdcard2. So it really depends on the app.
I put the music on /sdcard2 , and /sdcard and when I open up the music player still it says no files found

Most music players (including stock) expect the music files to be on /sdcard. They can't read /sdcard2.
It doesn't matter where i put the media... it wont load it... ive pretty much decided im taking the tablet back .... i cant justify spending that kinda money on something that cant do what my phone can.... such as play music videos pictures ... and flash player... i cant for the life of me understand why any company would release a product like this that isn't even complete on the software side of things.
Never mind i didn't realize i had to reboot the thing after loading media on /sdcard ... opps totally forget that i cant change my card on my droid without pulling the battery... thus automatic reboot... total after thought told ya i was new to this lol
Any other music players

Has anyone had luck with other music players that can be mapped to access /sdcard2?
Andless works (thanks for the recommendation Roebeet) but it really lacks any fun-factor! I'd like to see album art, use id3 tags, and use play my music from /sdcard2. Poweramp can't do this (folder options are hard-coded).
I'll try the new Winamp beta later on tonight and report back. Thanks All!

After trying 4 different music player apps, I stumbled upon Mortplayer beta. It reads .id3 tags, displays album covers, and most importantly for VEGAn users, it can read files from the gtab's microSD slot. Have fun all!
I use winamp and the music app in tnt-lite. Both use microsd card, read tags and use album art. The music app doesn't show album art until you pick a song, tho.

Were you able to get Winamp to read .mp3s from sdcard2? I tried and failed.

Does this sound like a hardware or software problem?

No media player will read my MP3 Tags. I just get a message that there is no music even though I have about 8gb of it. If I used a file browser I can locate an MP3 and select it, I am then give the option of which media player I would like to use to play the file. All players work. Well they all work until I switch to a different app and the file browser is closed.
PowerAmp, which can view files as well as MP3 tags, can see and play the files but when will occasionally go nuts. I will hear a morse code sound over the music, then the track with change, multiple times, and will end with the dialer making a phone call. All of this happens with the screen off.
I get the exact same issue with clean installs of MiUi (several versions), Virtuosity (V2 & V3) and Android Revolution HD 6.1.1. I have also formatted my SD card, in fact used two different SD cards. All give the same result.
Today it was suggested that it could be a hardware issue and that I should try a stock rom. I installed RUU_Pyramid_TMOUS_1.50.531.1. but no luck. Upon install the HTC media player saw no music.
I find it hard to believe that media players failing to read MP3s tags is a hardware issue when every other app works fine and they can access the SDcard for various files. But I don't know what else to try.
Software.
On ARHD, Go to Settings > Storage. Then wait for your SD Card to be scanned.
Most definitely software. I know the guy above me said it, but more or less for reassurance, that's a software issue. If it was hardware, you wouldn't be able to access anything on the card at all, or at the very least not be able to play files like MP3s.
Here's what I'm thinking. There's two major metadata tags; ID3v1 and ID3v2 I believe. Once, I has an issue where Android refused to read ID3v1 tags, it just ignored them completely. I use MediaMonkey for nothing but MP3 Tags, it's never let me down. Try putting some of your MP3s onto your PC and editing the metadata in MM, then send them back to the phone. Not sure what type MM encodes tags in, but they work for me just fine. Also, be sure to wipe your music player's data in Settings > Applications. This forces it to refresh it's caches on your music.
Good luck!
guys I agree, I can't see it being a hardware issue... but, I am running out of other options. I will try as many suggestions as I can, in full. I really don't want to go through he hassle of a warranty exchange.
@sromer
I did a clean install of ARHD, coming from stock. The default music player found no music. As suggested I opened settings>storgage to let the SD rescan, I even dled "rescan media" and "SDrescan" but no matter how many scans or reboots the same result. The media player does not see MP3s.
@sshede
I had the MP3 tag issue with an earlier android phone and now use MP3tag to edit all of my ID3s. The MP3s that are on my SD card were all viewable by my sensation in December, which is when this problem started. I have had my sensation since last summer. The problem started when I installed a MiUi update. Also I took the SD card out and put it in my SGS and MP3s work.
None of the ICS roms see music at first. Sometimes they can take a couple of hours before finding your music. This has to be rom related. The fimware should have nothing to do with it, and it's impossible to be a hardware issue. Alright, have you tried formatting the SD from within Android? Perhaps (and this is a real stretch) the allocation size is off in the Windows formatting tool and smaller bits of information are being left out? Purely speculation, and likely wrong, but we're troubleshootin' at this point.
Edit: I just reread the original post. Is there a nomedia file or something like that in your music's folder? If you were to add a new MP3 that hadn't been exposed to your Sensation, does it show up? The other thing to think of, if there's a folder called MIUI or miui on your SD, delete it. For good measure, take everything off your SD card that you made, any folder you didn't make needs to be left behind. This includes application folders, .android folders, etc etc. Format the card as FAT32, put all your stuff back on it. Make sure there's nothing in your folders that was created by Android. Nothing, seriously, nothing. If there are any files created by Android or android applications, delete them. Put the SD back in the phone, boot into recovery - not the already installed rom as it might put files back on the SD, wipe and freshly install a rom. This should ensure an absolutely clean installation with everything working fully.
Have you tried using a different SD card? OR back it up and reformat it. If that doesn't work.. Try another SD card. I wouldn't try warranty yet, it's a hassle and if worse comes to worst, they'll send you a ****ty replacement. Can't be the phone giving issues!
@sshede
I just formatted the SD VIA android. reloaded a few gb of music and they do not show up. This is all music that I have been able to view in the past.
Yes there is a nomedia file. I added new music (music which I could see before on other phones) and nothing.
I then reformatted the SD. I only loaded ARHD and Super Wipe. I flashed super wipe then ARHD. While in 4ext recovery I formatted the SD again before booting the rom. Mounted the SD and loaded a few gb of music and... it works... I still don't understand why two other android phones could see the MP3s an SGS and G2. Oh well at least it works for now.
Now I will restore the SD content and a nandroid of Virtuosity V3 and report back... thanks

Considering the fact you've tried a wide variety of different SD cards, ROMs, formatting, etc, I presume it's hardware.
Probably some bad connection in the headphone jack or on the board?
I'm no expert, but if I was in your situation I'd immediately just go get a new Sensation.
Remove all the songs except 2 - 3 than wait to see songs in the list. 8gb is too much

mediascanner issue? my music is invisible

So I installed jelly bean when it came out. (Codename Android 3.6.0 at the time of writing, but the problem persists regardless of the specific rom I'm using). I noticed that none of the music players available in the play store can find my music on my sd card. They are all in a folder named mp3, but I even tried renaming it to music - no luck. Also, the only pictures I can see in my gallery are the ones that have been made since the installation of the current rom. Does anyone have an idea how to force the mediascanner to actually scan my media? Damn, I want my media so bad

I have no idea why your music isn't being picked up. That's usually never an issue. Maybe someone else can chime in.
As for the gallery pictures not showing up. Just download Quick Pic from the Play Store. The default Android Gallery has been crying to be put of out of its misery for awhile now. It's terrible and slow. Yes, you can transfer pictures to your device and the gallery will take 5 minutes to eventually display them. Quick Pic is superior and will instantly pick up any pictures you add. No waiting involved.

check if one of the apps in use is the media scanner in a constant state of reboot.
media scanner problems often are caused by malformed jpeg file, the bug usually lies in the Exif information, you can use this tool (http://www.digitalconfidence.com/BatchPurifier.html) to remove Exif information from the file, 95% chance that everything returns to work including music and video because the media scanner is shared and if it hangs on jpeg images then can not catalog other multimedia files.
you will lose data such GPS position but the photo itself will remain intact, many have pointed at Camera360 as one of the sources of these corrupted files and I can confirm that.
I got a similar issue before and is solved by copy all media to a pc, delete the files in the phone, then move them back, see if it can help you

Alrighty. Just make sure there are none at the root of the SDcard or in folders where you want pictures to appear. Clockworkmod ROM Manager had a bug back a lil while ago where it put some .nomedia files in wrong folders, making people unable to find their music/picture.

I deleted nomedia (found one) and got rid of rom manager but still my music files don't show up with all the players. I can go directly to media/music via root explorer and play it though.
Go to your apps, find Media Storage, and then clear data & cache.
Download Rescan Media from the play store and run it. Wait for a bit (5 minutes should be good) and if you check in your music player(s) you should be able to see your music.

I have done that and everything works fine. BUT! after a battery change or charge (plug in USB cable) the database or cache that the media scan builds is gone. Deleted or corrupted by something. Its back to the same state, no music, video, added ringtones or pics show until a rescan. What could be deleting it?

[Q] Music player and ext-sd a problem

I have searched and am sure I have overlooked something here but I cannot seem to fix my factory music player problem (not Google Player). If all of my music is on the internal SD everything is fine but if I move it to the ext-SD, it cannot be found. The Google Player will still play all of my music but I don't care for the interface.
I have tried changing the directory on my ext-SD card numerous times, as well as using different file explorers to transfer the music files. I normally use the browser in Rom Toolbox to do all file transfer/copying and have no issues. I can't even just move the files, I have to copy them paste them in the new dir. and then go back and delete the old files. Can this be a SD card issuse?
My backups have saved and work but this music thing is driving me crazy. I am using a Samsung card with the TAB2 so it's no like I bought a knock off card from some online wholesale site. I know there has to be a simple fix to this but I just can't seem to find it. I am also rooted but running everything stock.
the only time i've seen anything like this happen is if I place a .nomedia file on my SD card to prevent the stock scanner from looking at the SD card for media files (atleast on my old SGP 4.0, thats how it worked). maybe you've done that at some point? have you tried other music players, there are MANY to choose from, personally I find the stock music app to be abysmal, if the ID3 tags are even partially damaged the files don't show up, I use poweramp, it has its OWN media scanner that won't skip files like the stock scanner does.

I haven't thought to look, honestly. I got the tab used at Rent a center, waiting for a new one (fastest delivery seems everyone sold out for Christmas). They let me use this one until mine comes in but was trying to figure it out because my buddy is gonna buy this one when I bring it back.
Different players do work, I use poweramp too but just wanted to see if it's a tab issue, thanks for the help. I pick mine up Monday so I may try an unroot then reset. He may just have to deal though, he's getting a decent (some scratches on back) Tab for 100 out the door.

Video playback issues

Hello there!
I've been searching the forums (mainly this one) and wasn't able to find a proper answer, so here I go:
I am REALLY happy with this phablet, being the Mate 7 my 5tht android phone, but I've never had any video playback problems: When I try to play a 720p mp4 file, it freezes at 1:00 (5 seconds more or less) or it stops and the system shows a popup: "Cannot play this video".
I've tried MX Player (HW and SW decoding), VLC and VLC beta, stock video player and MoboPlayer. Every one of them behaves the same way.
Also tried lower resolution files, and 360p aren't a problem for them: It plays them flawlessly. Played them from SD card and internal storage.
Btw, Youtube plays 1080p videos without a problem, and I usually watch short Twitch.tv sessions at highest resolution.
I don't know what else I can do, and I am seriously thinking about returning the unit, since it's one of my main uses (and that's why I just LOVE this screen).
Any help is appreciated and, also, any question regarding this problem.
[EDIT]
Btw, I am on 5.1.1 with EMUI 3.1 (build B324), unrooted.
Have you tried a factory reset? This would mostly fix issued like this. I'm running the same version of Android on the mt7-tl10 gold version and have never had an issue with this. In fact I'm currently happily re-watching Star Wars episodes 1 to 6 in 720p.
It sounds like the videos are being corrupted (correct me if I'm wrong), because that's exactly what happens when I try to play a video which torrent hasn't finished downloading.
Good luck!

Thanks for your reply.
Today I've discovered my SD card was having read issues, and even when I formatted it, it had issues with anything beyond 20MB, regardless being video or audio. Also, when i copied anything from the SD to the main memory, it kept having the same problems: mp3 suddenly stopped and videos couldn't be played.
So I extracted the SD, did a factory reset, and it looks like it's working flawlessly (fingers crossed).
So far, so good.

I'm glad I could be of some help!
I had the same issue with a previous device of mine, though the culprit had been a cheap and nasty MSD card I bought on vacation to squeeze extra photos in. I find that investing in proper storage (and taking the punch cost-wise) can go a long way, whether it be for your phone, PC, laptop or whatever.
Cheers! :highfive:
