[Q] Why the Android system sounds get stuck at only one song? - General Questions and Answers

My GF have an LG P698 (Optimus Net Dual Chip).
And we have a problem: all songs of alarms, ringtones etc. have the same song.
For example, if you pick a different tune to set as ringtone, any tune, it will be played the first ringtone (let's call xRing).
And if you set a different for alarm the same xRing will be played and placed.
So is like if all the songs are the xRing song.
Almost like if android only get mapped only one tune for everything.
I tried change permissions, wipe DC, delete the songs...
If I delete the xRing.ogg, all phone gets muted.
Is stock ROM and kernel, with tweaks (gps.conf, build.prop), init.d, AutoKiller Memory Optimizer with all tweaks, root, cwm.
The problem started after create the init.d folder (with proper script, not by me, and it works), installed the AutoKiller, and tweaked the gps.conf and build.prop
Any idea? If no, I will be obligated to try a cwm restore, but this is the last resort.
Thanks mates.

Those are a lot of changes. Revert them, & the problem should go away. Then, change them incrementally & see if/when the problem returns.

Ya is a lot. My frustation is, why this start if i don't change anything related? You know... :silly: that laziness.
BTW, thanks buddy, is a nice tip.
Anyone get something similar somewhere?
The killer have a tweak to mount partitions with noatime, I was thinking if could be the cause...
Oh yes, I almost forgot, the phone also have a sdcard partitioned, using link2sd, you know.
hahaha I liked your signature!

contacts & ringtones

hi everyone
i was wondering why when i assign a specific ringtone to a contact, it doesn't work. i have flashed several different roms for my herald/wing and sometimes it works. is there a registery edit or something i have to do? i have tried saving the files into the main memory and also the storage and neither works. any ideas or should i just give up on have "devil woman" play when my wife calls.
thanks
DK
Unless something's changed with OpenTouch 6.5 from ttrans fromer OT releases there's nothing special involved. Saving ringtones to the memory card often results in the loss of the assignment.
What type of file is it you're trying to use, how large is it and have you tried encoding it as another type?

i start with an mp3 and use audio manager to trim it and save into ringtones folder. i have also used mp3 trimmer with the same results.
Have you tried MP3 ringtones supplied by anyone else?
If you want you may PM me your email address and I will send you one from my phone that I know works.

i have some RT's that i purchased a while ago and i have some midi tones too. its wierd, when i was using otv3.0 biggy all worked fine. i don't know. thanks for the offer and help
Ok, so the bought ones aren't working either I take it. Do they work when you reflash OT3?
Are you restoring from a backup or do these not work with a fresh setup?
well i kinda have ot6.5 lite tweaked the way i like, so i don't want to go back to 3.0 just for tones. i was just wondering if anyone out there had already come across this and had a reg fix or something. i guess not that many people use diff tones for diff contacts. me, i need diversity in life, plus its easier to recognize a tone than pick up the phone and look whose calling. know what i mean? i also get a kick out of watching my co-workers faces when the diff songs come up. i guess i'll just keep an eye out for a fix. throw me one if you find it first.
thanks
Well, the reason I asked if you've tried a fresh install or even going back to 3.0 is to see if it's not some corruption somewhere. I've run every ROM you've listed so far without issue. I use different ring tones for most of my contacts as well and the only times I ever had that issue was with one corrupt file and the rest were when I put the MP3s on my SDHC.
I'll keep an eye out though. I'd still try backing up (even if you just have to use a demo of Sprite Backup or something) and do a completely fresh install. If you find a solution post it up for future reference.
hmmm. i'm not sure what you men as to a fresh install. i am kinda new to all this tech, i've only had a wing for about 4 months. i have hardspl'd my wing and i hardly ever get any errors when flashing. does sprite backup keep all your rom settings? pretty much all i ever need to keep is my stuff on the mem card. what i dont understand is that i can set a tone for my main ring and that always works. something gets screwy when applied to contacts. so you keep all your tones in main memory? isn't that a mem hog?
Sprite and a couple other apps out there create a backup file of all your settings and selected or all of your files. They saved to a compressed file on either your mem card or your PC (not all apps will backup straight to the PC).
At any rate I just wanted to make sure you weren't from a backup file... to eliminate one possible source of the issue (incompatible settings saved to it from a different ROM setup or corruption).
What I mean by a fresh install is reflashing the ROM and reinstalling all your apps via their installer. No restoring from a backup file or copying files to their folders. Not trying to confuse you.
First thing I'd try now that I know a bit more would be to download a demo of a backup program and make a backup. Then I'd reflash, try setting things up far enough to test the ringtones. If they work, then just plan on reconstructing your preferred setup without using the backup to restore your settings from... if there's no change, then restore the back up and you're right back where you were before.
Does that make sense?
If you're having this problem with more than the one ROM I doubt it's just a setting error. I'd try different sound files altogether.
Specifically which ROMs are you having this problem with anyway? You might see if they've got something in common, such as the same version of sound drivers.
not confusing at all. i got what your saying. i guess i'm actually fresh installing everytime since i don't use any back-up programs. is that right? anyway what other forms of sound files would you recommend? what are you using? the versions of roms i have been using are basically every rom from Ttran's OT collection, starting with v3.0 and currently v6.5 throttlelaunch3d lite. v3.0 is the only one that the tones worked for. i will try the back-up idea you have after work today. thats a good idea. thanks
Yeah, I'd call the way you're doing it a "fresh install"... I mean by that that the system and ROM are essentially fresh and untouched. So you know there's not an old setting that might be causing the problems or a bad registry entry.
Backing up definitely makes things easier. I make a backup of my setup fairly often. Then when I want to try another I'll flash it, start setting it up, and if I need to be back with my old setup before I can finish setting up the new one, I'll backup where I am with the new setup, reflash my old ROM and restore the backup for the old setup... then I can resume working on getting the new one where I want later on.
I make my MP3 ringtones using Audacity. I generally make the mono and only 40kbps... nice and small but usually still sound good at that size. You could also try a WAV file.
I haven't used OT 3, but I've tried all the rest, not just the lite ROMs either. I haven't had any trouble. My offer still stands to send you one of my ringtones for you to test with if you want.
sounds good. is audacity a free? i'm gonna pm you my email and we can try a little test. maybe the stereo is the problem.
thanks
Email sent.
I doubt the stereo is the issue, although file size, bit rate and VBR may be.
Audacity is free. It takes a little getting used to, but there are how-to's on the net, just Google it. It's NOT as user friendly as some apps, but it is generally better than more of the dumbed down apps.

Phone only rings once?!

Hey guys, I'm a new Nexus S owner coming over from an Evo. On my Evo I rooted it and put a custom rom on it and such, so I'm not completely new or wet behind the ears when it comes to doing things with your phone.
Here's the thing: I went and put custom ringtones on my Nexus, but the one I use primarily only rings once. I look at it and see it vibrating and still receiving a call...but the ring-tone does not loop. It rings once and that's it. So far it's the only problem I'm having with my phone. Anyone having the same problem or have a fix for me that I can use?
Thanks in advance for the help!
btw: I put the custom ringtones on my phone by making a folder in the SD card titled media/audio/ringtones. I did that and the tones showed up. Is there another method that I can use that will make the ringtone repeat itself, because this whole 1 ring thing is not going to work, lol.
someone else asked me about this exact same thing right before you posted this. I tested, and ringtones on your sd dont loop :/ I made a 4 second ringtone to test and it rings for 4 seconds then stops. i know this wasnt the case on other phones and dont see why it is now. but just letting you know thats your issue.
I don't find this to be true for me. I've got the same setup and mine loop. I don't know how to help troubleshoot it for you either. I'm running stock rooted. I will test this later and let you know if I was wrong.
Yea, I'm running stock rooted as well...I don't understand why this would be an issue at all. It doesn't make any sense. I would hate to have to just make the ringtone longer by looping it manually and then replacing it on the phone, there has to be some other reason behind this.

I just made a ringtone, placed it on my sd, and it only played once. I was asked via gtalk by another NS4G owner about it, so I tested. Maybe your ringtone is longer than you think?
I am having the same issue. I took the stock ringtones off the last rom I was running on my Evo and they don't loop on my nexus. I even tried placing the ringers in the actual ringtone folder (/system/media/audio/ringtones) and they still did not loop, I just gave up. Any one have any ideas?
Are you guys using google voice integration? I found that it started only playing ringtones once after integrating with google voice.
I've noticed the same thing as you guys have, can't figure it out.
I didn't integrate

That could be it. I remember when I first got my phone the ringtone would loop. Sometime after GV/Sprint it stopped doing it.
I did integrate after getting my phone, and it use to loop while it was integrated I think...but then I turned the integration off after a while, lately I started noticing that the ringtones weren't looping.
I use music files for my phone that last until the phone is answered I never noticed

I've done a bit of investigating with this and have yet to find a definitive answer. The ones that will repeat are on system media ringtones. They are all ogg. I was playing with Vespa.ogg. I made an ogg file and tried to disguise it as vespa. I made sure the audio file characteristics were similar. Permissions and ownership were copied too. I even changed the tag of the file of it's name and composer was the same. I copied my file on top of the real one in system and made everything ro and rebooted. None of that made any difference, it wouldn't loop. I opened up music app and played files. The original would loop but the imposter wouldn't. The only differences I still see is my file is 3k smaller and not the same date as all the other ogg files in the system folder. Other than that, all my theories of what is causing this behavior have been wrong.
Could it be md5 signatures? Date and time (I don't know how to change that only using the phone and gui)? Other than that I have no frigging clue. Anyone else motivated enough to figure it out? I can't think of anything else and don't know cli enough to agamgm things in a terminal window or emulator.
If I copied a file from system to sdcard, it would loop out of it's native folder. I don't know if a ringtone editing and assigning app would make any difference. It's too late and I'm too tired ATM to do anymore detective work today.
Its the gv integration. Do the same tests after you disable it.

Are you picking one of the ogg files of ringtones that came with the phone? If you play the file you chose in a music app, how many seconds long is it? I just said to hell with it and found the ringtone I like and copy paste in an audio editing program on the computer enough times to make it 30 seconds long. Problem not solved but taken care of.
nope, i'm using a file seted by 'zedge' app, it's an mp3 file! i also use another short mp3 file and it also loops.
i'm on cm7 with stock kernel!
Is it possible there is only an issue with the Sprint version of the phone?
Grasping at straws now but anything is possible. If I remember, zedge you can download and has a built in trimmer and can assign stuff too.
I will play with ringdroid and the like and see what comes of it.

SOS!! Upgraded my XT720 from 2.1 to 2.2 and Screwed UP

Hi everyone
I am in need of urgent Help
I upgraded my Motorola Milestone XT720 from 2.1 to 2.2 using Cincinatti Bell Manual.
I referred this
http://www.cincinnatibell.com/milestoneupgrade/#howtoupgrade
Now, After successful upgrade, I have some serious issues
1) My Camera's Flash isnt working. I cant enable it.
2) Performance is low
3) Lost MotoNav. How can I get it back?
4) Even if I keep Pattern lock, the slide lock do appears
5) Also, How I can merge duplicate contacts? like one contact has 3 numbers saved that are same..
Thankyou
1. im not sure. should work.
2. performance is low. you can overclock using milestone overclock if you are still rooted. however, if you are not the kind who maintains you phone everyday, i suggest you go back to 2.1 as its the most stable.
3. just google motonav apk
4. thats a flaw in the rom, cant be fixed. if you'd like to try out custom roms and maintain you phone like most of us do here, then go ahead. its very exciting lol
5. you can merge duplicate contacts by signing in to gmail on a computer, click contacts and just look around the buttons. its called "find and merge duplicate contacts" if im not wrong.
hope this helped
1) Tried all level best best to start flash... It didnt. Installed Sleekcamera apk.
2) Google find and merge always crashes and unable to do the action
3) Whats overclocking? Is it a self explanatory software??
4) Dont feel like going back to 2.1...Love App2SD
5) I also have some issues - cant play HD video and my internal video player isnt working to its full potential as I am unable o avi file. I feel, that there is codec problem, as Ringdriod isnt working too...

if you like to have apps on your sd, there's a more advanced way to have it. i think its better than android's own move apps to sd. many roms we have around here have app2ext automatically set if they detect any ext partitions on your sd card. it moves all user apps onto an ext partition on your sd card (you have to use a partition tool to make this ext partition).
overclocking is actually just controlling your cpu clock speeds. most of us overclock our phone because it sometimes get laggy if we use the stock speeds. theres an app that helps us overclock on the market called milestone overclock. please remember that you need to be rooted do these stuff.
for the camera, you might have hardware problems. i dont know. contacts you should try doing the find and merge duplicates again. i'll upload a pic to show you what it looks like.
i recommend mioze's cm6 rom if you ever want to play around with flashing stuff. the stablest i've tried so far. Cyanogenmod is very versatile lol. there are a lot of themes for this rom too, made by Sileshn our master themer. for the videos i dont think i can help. you could try mobo player from the market (i think?)
Thankyou - Sorry to buggin u again n again. One last help

Yup, I have that. Unable to to pay HD vid. It shows a lag of sound and vid. Tried soft decoding. Didnt work.
Couple of things about this. Are you still Rooted? CBW gave root permissions and then I think later in the tutorial they tell you how to give it back. Don't give it back. For what you want to do, you need to keep Root permission of your device.
Next are you comfortable with flashing custom ROMs and doing realtive non-beginner stuff on your phone. We can help you and walk you through stuff but unfortunately, there isn't an "app for that". If so, then here we go.
If you successfully were able to upgrade your phone, then you can do this. There are many custom ROMS in our forums that you can use. CM6, Hellmonger's, Kahl's V4, Bravo (wip) and CM7 (wip). I suggest CM6 or Kahl's V4 as they are stable enough for beginners to learn on. The have 99% working everything and what doesn't work, is either being fixed or there are already work-arounds. (search the development forums for these)
CBW's ROM doesn't have app2ext. It only has the native Froyo app2sd where you can go to settings>apps>pick your app>move to sd. This is not the same as App2ext or Link2sd. In these you have to partition your SDcard with an ext partition. Do you know how to partition your SD card? All the above ROMs do have the native Froyo app2sd, so if you don't know how to partition your SD card, that is fine too.
Answer those and then you can decide to move forward or not. It isn't hard and you don't have to be super smart to do it, although the more you read around, there are some seriously intelligent people in here. It is just from reading your posts above, how comfortable are you? You will not brick your phone and make it a paperweight, we can bring it back from the brink, if need be. We've done it before.
**Milestone Overclock is an app in the market (requires Root) that is free to download. Just download it and set it at preset 1000/66 and you'll definately seem a boost in performance.
**Google contacts. If merge doesn't work for you, go into google on PC and look at your contact and you may have some duplicates in there. When i first got it, i had 3 of everyone too. Also, go into your phone and go to settings>account/sync and see what is sycnhing. Side note: if you have a Google+ account, unsych that as everyone in your circles will be put on your phone and vice-versa.
**Moboplayer. I use this all the time and have no problem seeing HD vids. Might want to take another look at the preferences. It even says it on the thunmbnails that it is HD.
**Camera. If you don't like the the camera function, there are a few on the market (mostly paid though) that work well. I use Vignette, but there is Camera360 and I think one for LG too. If your flash isn't working though, that might be a hardware issue.
Figure out what you want to do with your phone (flash custom ROM or not) and we can help. If you already flashed the CBW upgrade, then you are really half-way there.
Also sorry for the manifesto sized response.
Hi

[Q] Deodexed - Debloated (manually)?

I'm really sorry if this has already been posted somewhere, but I "did" look for the past hour and couldn't find anything that specifically showed me what to do.
I'm currently running the following on my Samsung Droid Charge:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/10515-odinall-in-oneep4d-gingerbread-236-w-cwrimo-kernelrooted/
I wasn't able to use the Deodexed/Debloated since certain programs weren't loaded by default.
Since running the fully bloated version, the memory for apps that start automatically keep the memory usage around 310/330MB and I'm constantly having to use the TaskManager to clear/close apps that are running in the background.
I found a site that allowed me to remove (via adb) all the .odex files, and I deleted some of the .apk that did remove apps, but I'd really like to know what I can and can't remove. Right now my camera works, but when trying to make a movie, it says it can't save to the flash drive....so I may have deleted something. /ugh
I'd really appreciate it if there was a link or site that shows you how to manually remove all programs (debloat) on your phone once you have it setup the way you want. I have no need for about 50% of the crap Verizon installed.
Yes, I'm rooted (shhhh) and the phone's display is awesome, but for now I'm kinda stuck with it since the wife has control of the purse strings. HA!
Thanks in advance!!

I would just use root explorer to unistall the apps from the system/ apps folder, that way you can remove app, that you don't use that are in the app drawer.

That's what I did, but exploring in other directories (was bored) I noticed quite a few com.android.blahblahblah.bitbop and other com.android.xxxx.programname that I deleted in the /system/app folder. Do these need to be removed also?
I think this is where I removed one of the files that killed the video recorder on my phone and I have no idea what it was. ???
If just removing the .odex files and files in the /system/app folder is all that's needed, I'm happy but there are still quite a few "background apps" that load such as "Factory Test", "Rx Networks PGPS Seed Downloader", "VVMservice" etc. Have no clue what those are and I have very few apps installed. The phone is mostly used for work, so I have Pulse, Engadget, Facebook and Business Calendar (which ties into Exchange) installed. That's it.
Thanks again!

Just remove the apps that you know are the same from the app drawer. You don't wanna mess with others, since if you erase the main, the extras wont run and can cause instability. Your phone should run faster after that. May try setcpu to overclock it to.

Gotcha. I use No-frills CPU Control, but the Max CPU is 1GHz and minimum is 100MHz, so either I'm running stock kernel, or the program won't allow me to overclock it.
Anyway, I appreciate the help!!

It can overclock up to 1.6GHz
I would keep it on like 1.4GHz just to be safe though
remove pulse and kindle and words free
Hi guys,
Wasntnsure where to post this, this seems like the right thread.
I have rooted my tab and running GalaxyaTasks ROM.
My question is how can I delete the .apk for kindle, pulse and WordFree?
Thanks guys
Use a file explorer and find the corresponding .apk file in either /data/app or /system/app
Afterwards do a reboot and maybe run SD Maid "corpse cleaner" feature to remove left over settings files.

I have the root explorer and everything, however, I couldn't find the APK name for the pulse / kindle application, do you know that name?
I am basically looking for the name of the APK.
Thanks,
The name of the .apk will be the apps packagename look it up.
I.e. for the kinde app
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.amazon.kindle
"com.amazon.kindle" is that apps packagename.
The apk will be named com.amazon.kindle(something).apk
You could just use an app to search for "kindle" on your device.

[Q] Zipalign and init.d

I'm still struggling with my Tab's lags and hickups (see my other post).
I've tried various build prop tweaks without any effects.
I've seen that some have zipalign on boot. To my understanding zipalign is only useful on deodexed Roms but I'm on an odexed one. Can anyone tell me if zipalign has any effect on odexed Roms?
Many tweaks require an etc/init.d folder, but I don't have any. And when I flash a zip that contains an etc/init.d folder with some files in it then none of them appear in my system after I rebooted.
I tried to manually add an init.d folder and then manually copy the zip files into it (with rwx rx rx perms), but it doesn't seem to improve anything.
So I definitely missed something, and I hope that someone amongst you guys will tell me what it is that I missed
Thanks in advance!

have you tried this?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mclaught.mctweaker&feature=search_result
it helped me a lil with stock rom.
Thanks for the tip, I'll try it tomorrow.
To be honest I don't expect too much, I've just spent the whole evening trying various tweaks like supremacy tweak, adrenaline etc. and didn't get any results apart from a bootloop (fortunately I've got a nandroid backup).
I think what I may need for the video lags are scripts like:
ro.media.enc.vid.h263.bps=90000,77000
or:
ro.media.enc.vid.height.min = 144
I took these ones from my galaxy mini (there are plenty of such scripts in the mini's build prop) and I may try to adjust them to the tab.
Anyway, thanks again for the apk, I'll let you know tomorrow...
Ok so I tried, but the apk FCs...
What I need are the right scripts, and some understanding about init.d (see op)...

those apps modified the build.prop improperly, which, for our device, causes a bootloop. mctweaker create the init.d folder, then uses their script to modify it on boot. since i'm back on stock, i'm using it again now, and it's working great.
Thanks a lot, I downloaded the latest version and it worked!
No more lags, and as you said it created the init.d folder, with the proper perms rwx rwx rwx (I didn't know, I thought it was rwx rx rx and that's probably why it had failed).
One reason why the tweaks I tried before didn't work is that some of them conflict with each others. For exemple, debug.sf.hw and video.accelerate.hw shouldn't be set both with a 1 value coz it causes lags. The proper values are:
debug.sf.hw=0
video.accelerate.hw=1
I wish I had known this apk before, instead of struggling on my own with all those scripts...
Thanks again mate, I love XDA!!!

i found the app by accident too. glad that it works, it helped to simplify a lot of manual typing/copy pasting works. to be honest, before this, i didn't know build.prop allows so much tweaks. some of them i have only seen on the app.

Yep, it has some very nice ones...
Actually some of this apk's tweaks can be found in scripts like v6, adrenaline etc., but the good thing with this apk is that it allows fine tuning and sets everything with the right perms.
A little gem, highly recommended!
There.s not a lot you are going to get from these apps or build prop mods. The Samsung developers are not idiots or evil.
I always wonder what people are doing to their tab to get such poor performance. I mean after all, this tab has a fast processor, gobs of memory and the stock firmware is pretty lite and smooth. There's nothing you can do to fix any tab or phone if you load up 500 active widgets and live wall papers and then try to play some non-hardware acceleration supported off beat video. Check which apps or widgets you are running. Some of them are really poorly written. Use a good CPU / battery analysis app off the market to find out whats going on.

Waow, nice arrogancy mate...
So you assume I have 1 zillion widgets, use ****ty apks and don't know what I'm doing with my tab?
Sorry to disappoint you, and with all respect due to your 100000000 posts, but I use 0 widgets (I don't like that useless battery consuming stuff), I don't use live wallpapers (same story), the video player I use is mx, I have skinned my rom as much as possible (I removed all the bloat and even more, only 30 system apks are remaining) and I don't play games.
So you see, maybe next time you should think twice before assuming this or that.
This said, I agree with your signature...
