[Q] Can anyone confirm this app? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Two questions:
1. If you have an AT&T One X, please go to Settings > Apps
Then choose the "All" column
Then scroll down alphabetically
For the app "Package installer" What version number do you see?
2. Yesterday I factory reset the phone and just let it sit - nothing installed or configured, no Google account set up or anything else
Yet, this morning I find from task manager that "Package installer" is running.
Why would Package installer start running on an unconfigured phone?

i don't think this will be helpful because I'm running a custom rom but mine is 4.1.1-eng. brandom.20121011.150203. Thats on rebelMOD rom

Running CR 4.5 Dev
Package Installer version 3.10.2216172425.... (it keeps going)

It would start running because you could side load apps still? I wouldnt worry about it
Sent from my HTC One XL using Tapatalk 2

Superchip:
I agree. But I wasn't doing anything to prompt the system to think I wanted to side load something.
With the phone sitting at stock and using task manager, I have watched Package installer appear (run) disappear, and reappear a few hours later.
You're sure I shouldn't be concerned?
Butters and Joshua:
Thanks!
My stock device shows the same version as Butters.
However I note Josh's phone, and every other Android I've seen ... the Package installer usually shares the same version as the operating system.
Meaning, the anticipated version Butters and I are seeing should be v4.0.4.xxx
It would seem HTC is either using a custom version with internal versioning scheme, or they grabbed the Package installer from an old version of Android. HTC seems to approach their apps as if cooking jambalaya lol.

This is mine bro. Was on 1.85 firmware before root, now running mergeX by congo

3rd party apps

Ok so I've tried to download and install a few 3rd party apps and I can't get them to work. I have the allow 3rd party programs box checked. I can download them but they won't launch and install. The only one I was able to try and install is the itunes remote program but it fails at the end. Any ideas?
I have downloaded several and they all work, try to uninstall then reinstall again is all I can recommend man.
I'm having the same problem, and I'm actually kind of worried that it might be because of changes in the system between when the emulator was released and the phone was released. I can't imagine that would be the case, but you never know.
I'm having the same problem cannot load any third-party apps even though I have the box checked. Hopefully the OTA update will correct. I've tried re-downloading several times. I click on the .apk file and it does nothing. If I hold my finger down on the file until the menu pops up and I select open, nothing happens either.

I think most of the freeware apps out there are for an older SDK and so they won't work until the developer updates them for V1.0
The only site im currentry using is slideme.org. They have some aps for version 1.0. Also u download their Application SAM so u can find and install directly from ur G1. and its free.
I was able to get gEZTIP to install the other day, it is a tip calculator. Had to allow 3rd party apps but it installed right away.
Opera would be soo freaking cool!
Android SDK version
A lot of 3rd party apps were developed using an OLD version of the SDK (beta versions).
The G1/Dream runs the final version 1.0 RC19. If the app you are trying to install is not programmed using said android version, it will NOT install.
Only way to install those apps is to download the source code to the apps and update it to use the new SDK instead of the old one (not for non-programmers).
I have already done so with the file browser and got it to work on the G1. However, some functionality has been removed from the SDK in version 1.0 because of security reasons and a lot of apps that were developed using Beta SDK's will NOT be able to be upgraded to 1.0 SDK.

This IS THE REASON indeed why they apps are not running on G1! I can confirm this. In our directory of free Android apps most of submitted software is 4-8 months old and thus compiled with OLD and even OLDER SDKs (yes, there were few iterations and the compatibility has been broken several times).
We are now going through all apps in the directory and recompiling it with SDK 1.0. I'll report back here when we are done.

Android Offline App Loader

I hand an HTC Magic + and would like to know if there was a way to load an app installer onto the android system without using android market place.
Yes i know i can easily sign into the android app market and download many installers, but that will force me to have a google account tied to my phone.
Here is the achillis heel, i do not want to log into google account on the android market.
Is there a way to install apps to the android 2.1, 2.2, or 2.3 using the storage card, some offline app loader.
I know there is a way to do this using the Android SDK, i tried it, i got no idea how to use it, there are no good guides anywhere on internet forums, and youtube guide was for mac, and it wasnt presented clearly.
The reason why i want an offline app loader is so i can try many of the app from the xda forums and community without using the market place.
If you already have the .apk's it's as easy as opening them in the file manager on your phone. Just make sure you have Settings > Applications > Unknown Sources selected.
If you're asking about where you can go to get the .apk's to install them, that's a whole different story and I'm not getting in on that discussion.

I don't see the "unkown sources" selection on the setting> applications. Can anyone help ME find it?

cant install apks

Today i tried to install an apk i downloaded from a company thats software i use, Touchdown for my email and contacts etc.
When i went to the download file to click on the apk to update my version it gives me the install option but i cant click on it only on cancel.
I messed around and then did the same thing though my file explorer and this time i was presented with an option to install it using package installer or juicy installer work around.
package didnt work the the installer workaround did.
Is this a problem with juicy or what?
If its a problem and they have obviously included a work around are they going to fix it?
This is a weird issue i guess idk.
Any responses would be helpful.
Go to settings>security and check the "unknown sources" box. Without that you can only install apps from the play store.

Disable the brightness control in juice defender. That's causing your problems.
Sent from my LG-P930 using xda premium
Worked like a charm
Thanks...
That worked and solved the issue
Is that with all screen dimmers or just Juicy?
With Juicy i can at least do the pull down click brightness turn it off and install then turn it back on
Thanks again

Update HTC Sense

Hi guys, this is something Ive found Fidelin with my htc powered by the liberty rom which is running android 4.4.2,
to start with I do not take any responsability for what happens to your device, everything you do is all on your own risk.,
Also Im not the creator of the Device faker app, all im doing is showing something I found and want to share it with the rest of the world (this was only yet tested on the liberty rom however if anone wants to test on other sense roms so feel free to help and submit your results)
For this MOD you obviously need to be rooted ,
you also want to have xposed installed and fully running.
Now what you have to do is to download this module (Device Faker) for the xposed framework,
after youve downloaded it install it like every non google play store app (or your can download this through the xposed app or theplay store)
than go to xposed enable the module and reboot,
after your htc has sucessfuly booted, open the device faker app from there your gonna click on the drop down list where it says "nexus 7" on that list you will find verious phones but what we are loooking for is "htc one" once you have selected "htc one" from the list click apply on the bottom of the application than once again reboot your htc,
now all you have to do is to go to the play store and update your htc sence or download the cool apps from htc that you dont yet have,
ENJOY!
Anybody tested this to see if it works?

"Unknown sources" missing on Oreo

Hi, since the Oreo update I can't find the "Unknown sources" to install APK's freely. I'ts not under "Lock Screen and Security", and I have enabled Chrome in "Applications/Special Access/Install other apps" and I'm trying to install apps from the "Downloads" section of chrome, but it dosn't work this way either.
I was trying to install the Pixel Launcher as seen from here: https://theunlockr.com/2018/03/13/make-samsung-galaxy-s9-look-like-stock-android/
But everytime I try it I get the "<!> Application not installed".
I don't know exactly what says in english, I'm using my phone in spanish.
Any ideas? Thanks!
If you go to Settings-Apps-3 Dots-Special Access-Install Unknown Apps.
They've moved it so only certain apps can install unknown apps
Please help how to fix this problem. This doesn't work, I tried installing Accuweather pro several times. I have the app saved to my Google Drive, I click on the app and I see something called 'Staging App' and then I get this alert ' There was a problem parsing the package'. I currently had an older version of Accuweather pro installed and working fine. I decided to remove the old version and then reinstall it and I received the same alert. FYI the old Accuweather app was installed before the Oreo update.

Have you tried downloading your APP file from Google Drive to your phone then opening the copy on your phone, that should install the .apk
Go to settings on the phone >> apps >> 3 vertical dots at the top right corner >> special access >> install unknown apps >> and there enable the permission from where you are trying to download it.
All thank you,
I found out that you now have to download the app to your phone. Google Drive does not allow you to download and manually install .
Dear sir/madam,
Following your answer, in specific this part, "They've moved it so only certain apps can install unknown apps", perhaps someone could help me out. I use the Firefox Focus browser and this app doesn't show up in the list of apps that are allowed to install unknown apps.
* Does this mean Firefox Focus can't install apps from unknown apps, since it's not on the list?
* And perhaps we can conclude from that it will never be allowed to do so?
* Or would this app not be on this list, because I've never tried installing anything using this browser?
I guess the real question would be, what populates this list?
I hope to hear from you, thanks in advance, all the best.
Form what I've seen, 1st time you try to install apk from an app it asks you if you want to allow it?

That's what I was thinking as well, funny thing is that 'Google Chrome' is in the list and I've never used that browser. Unless it's there, because it's from Google
I have followed the above suggestions and have allowed Chrome to install apps since that's the browser I'm using. The phone says I have downloaded the app but it is not giving me any option to install it? Where did the download go and how can I get it actually installed? This is an app for work.
Edit: Nevermind - I restarted the phone and tried again and it worked. thanks.
