deleted lockscreen, oops! - General Questions and Answers

being a noob to Android after years of BlackBerry, but LOVING the Android freedom, I rooted my HTC Sensation 4G (not all that easily, I might add). In trying to remove bloatware, I deleted the stock Android default lockscreen, thinking that it was superfluous since T-Mobile/HTC had included the HTC lockscreen. What I failed to realize was that apparently the HTC one works on top of the default one (I even "quarantined" the deleted one before fully removing, and it still functioned fine, but must have been from cache or something because it no longer did after reboot). So, now no lockscreen comes up at all, no ring tab to pull, just a blank screen of wallpaper, effectively meaning I've bricked my phone. I'm hoping that I can do some kind of restore, perhaps an apk I could load from my PC onto my phone's SD card, or alternatively have some kind of recovery whereby I don't lose everything, programs and data such as contacts. I do have a Clockwork backup on the SD from a month or so ago, and can get my HBOOT menu offering me both factory reset and Recovery options, but not sure what I might lose doing either of those. Still learning Android, not even sure of terms like SuperCID and ICS, though reading much as I can to learn. I am looking for suggestions as to how I might recover just my lockscreen, or failing that, the best path to recovery after some sort of restoration. Have never yet flashed a ROM or done anything with firmware, but maybe this is the time since I may have nothing to lose, in a sense, don't know about either of those processes but want to learn and do.

reply to myself
OK, seeing as nobody came to my info rescue, I'll post to myself in case it helps somebody in the future. Finally just got brave enough to push some buttons, and came out smelling like a rose. Did the HBoot via power button together with down volume after battery pull, chose Recovery, then Advanced, and then chose to just recover the System only from the one available recovery. Worked like a charm. Phone no longer rooted, but I'm going to try the OTA of ICS anyway and eventually re-root after that. Know I will have to flash stock recovery to replace the CWM (Clockwork) one that allowed me this recovery, as OTA ICS requires stock recovery, but that doesn't sound like a problem.

Trouble with Touch screen, multi touch

I have cyanogens latest rom installed. I tried all the previous versions as well and I keep
having the same problem.
My Touch screen on my MyTouch3g keeps, for lack of a better description, going to sleep. I can still use the multi touch zoom function in the browser, but I cannot screen flick or get the icons to respond. I can hold the bottom of the screen and turn off and on and sometimes this will repair the problem. It seems to recur randomly. Is there any place to look in the log file to see what is causing this? I'm at a total loss after 6 or so roms and still no go. I tried the stripped down rom labeled TMO-OTA-US-DRC83-Rooted_update and also the expansion pack to no avail. I can't really believe this is hardware related since it's random and fixes with a power cycle most times. I'm just finding it annoying as hell, and I hope someone might be able to point me in the right direction.
I've done the bootloader flash/delete data and re-installed each time.
Latest rom from Cyanogen isCyanogen mod 4.2.4
Kernel version is 2.6.29.6-cm42 (does this matter? I include because I'm not sure)
Thanks
Mike
Maybe this will help
look for a post on how to install cyanogen rom on your MTY3 and dowlaod the rooted rom there.
secondly,
see this thread and the last post from me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583683
I've done multiple re-installs. The same problem keeps resurfacing within minutes.
I can use the touch screen and then it craps out. Oddly it will many times still allow pinch and zoom multi-touch in the browser. But single touch, such as in typing web addresses etc. , does not work.
Does anyone have an idea as to why this might be happening? Is there a particular file that is escaping the wipe/ reboot and reload process that is still not being replaced.
I'm curious if the Kernel has anything to do with this.
Any ideas?
Mike.
try redownloading the rom and the htc image like redownloading from the source wipe the ext erior partition as well pretty much completely restart the process except keep root lol... if that doesnt work then you need to unroot and reroot the bad boy all a learning experiance
Wipe the exterior partition? Doesn't this occur when I do a wipe/data? I have never partitioned the sd card. It has been the same since I received it. Will this affect the screen behavior?
Thanks for the input
Mike
oh well I figured you would be running apps2sd which requires a exterior partition or ext2/3/4 as some may call it... most roms require a wipe of that as some storage will transfer to there and cause problems ona seperate rom for some but if yours is a fresh sdcard then the only thing I can suggest is get a redownload of the cyan rom

[Q] boot loop on inspire after set cpu

Hello...
I'm a newbie to modding phones (obvious from the question/problem I've about to ask). I have an HTC Inspire and I followed the one click rooting guide and installed Coredroid7 with the 3rd set of radio/RIL listed in that thread. With a bit of a struggle I got it working - worked great and I loved it. Unfortunately I found on the market place an app (Overclock Widget by Billy Cui ) - clicked on "load on boot" and a few bad settings and the entire phone froze. Since then whenever I boot my phone is stuck on the white screen with green HTC logo. The config on my phone is:
s-off
hboot 0.85.0019
micop-0438
radio 26.09.04.11_m2
emmc boot
I've googled all of the internet and followed advice such as reflashing the radio/RIL. went into recover and typed the "adb shell, etc... to remove files indicated (but they were not there)". tried to do recover but the recovery files werent there. At this state, there is only so many combinations you can do and I feel I have done it all.
there are a lot of advice on set cpu problem with other HTC devices but none of them work/can be applied to the Inspire.
Can someone please help me? In your answer please answer me in a dumb down way - keeping in mind I am new and have a hard time understanding acroynms and how to perform complex operations with the hint of a word phrase (ie - please be explicit for me on how to flash radio, instead of saying flash radio XYZ)
Thanks in advance
PS: I am already nervous/scared of what has happened, I am hoping I don't have to do a eng s-off as part of the solution please
based on my description (white screen with HTC logo) have i bricked my phone or is it in a boot loop?
i tried the following
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033353
and when i say install PD98IMG.zip it just says installation aborted. This is the image I got from Coredroid7 that was working before the problem started.
also tried this:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/lg-...cks/50301-setcpu-forgot-uncheck-set-boot.html
but my phone does not have the file they wanted me to delete
If you see the white HTC logo your always okay. The problem comes when there is nothing showing, you must have changed some settings that won't let the phone complete some core processes.
This can easily be fixed by pulling battery hold volume down button and power and booting into Hboot. Then go into recovery factory reset and wipe dalvik_cache(under advanced) and flash the desired ROM or do a restore from a point your phone worked perfectly.

First... THANK YOU very very much for telling me it is not as bad as it seems.
I have done the following:
go into hboot
recovery option
wipe dalvik
flash coredroid7 again by having it be embedded in PD98IMG.zip however like mentioned above this fails.
Right now I am redoing the process again by formatting my sdcard, creating /download to put the PD98IMG.zip in follow the procedures again above. In case this fails, what are my options?
thanks for the guidance. i flashed it again with:
CoreDroid_Desire_HD_GB_2.3.3_V7.0_RV
and I am out of the white screen mode.
Just remember if your phone boots up but not all the way its still ok you can save it. The easiest although most annoying solution is reflash the rom. Also i know you hear about people bricking there phone. I truly think its harder than anyone thinks. Good luck with the inspire. Also if you want overclocking/underclocking stick with setcpu(you can get it free for being an xda member just search xda). Let it auto detect speeds. Give it root permission (itll pop up asking make sure you check remember above the allow button). If your overclocking I recommend staying undler 1.6 ghz (1600 on setcpu) and go to profile select enable. Then set up a profile for screen off and set it for around 300 mhz to help with battery life.

I think I've had about every kind of soft boot thre is on the sticky guide, and one that isn't, and I have always been able to recover (knock on wood). Even black screens...
I was stuck in a similar situation once:I forgot to take off "load on boot" and increased the max speed all the way to like 1.9. And phone froze.
SetCPU gets permissions in the process of phone boot up, after the whole OS is loaded. There is a tiny time gap between home screen coming up, and SetCPU being granted SU permissions. So this is what I did:
I did a reboot. And after the phone starts, without giving any time opened the app drawer for "SuperUser" app, and took off SetCPU permissions from there. This denied SetCPU of it permissions and it was loaded at default speeds. Then I went into Settings-->Applications, and erased all SetCPU data.
Well, it took me like 3-4 reboots before I could master the timing to get to SuperUser and take off SetCPU from there. But it atleast saved me the hazzle of reflashing everything again. And yes sir, I forgot to take a nandroid backup
thanks
Thanks All
Problem fixed
same issue only worse
I have the same situation. I flashed absolution 2.0 last night. Everything went good. Turned it on this morning seemed to work fine also then I turned it off for work and tried turning it back on at the end of the day and it just runs a loop. I can get to the HBOOT menu but I only have 5 options; fastboot, recovery, factory reset, sim lock, and image crc. There is no advance settings and when I choose any of the available options nothing happens except the phone reboots (crc does run a check but then nothing). Hooked to my pc and it says found android 1.0 but I can't do anything with it. I have also pulled the battery and sims card.

What happens when you select recovery and press power?
It just turns off and starts back up and runs its loop. Same for fastboot and factory reboot.
Go here, I've already informed attn1 and his group that you'd be coming.
Going to the link.
They'll get ya fixed up.
Thanks TX. Those guys on that site were awesome. Attn1 worked with me for over an hour. Unfortunately, my phone itself has a hardware failure. Never the less, GREAT support. I wish there was a thank you button for them. This was my first android phone (lasted 3 months) and b/c of the DEV's and other members it won't be my last. Just hope the next one lasts longer.

Dang man, that sucks. I can honestly say I've never had a device fail like that.
Good luck on your next device, whatever it may be.

Display / menus freezing and / or disappearing, system apps force closing

I've been searching this form for an hour or two now and still haven't found my issue, so here goes.
Just got an HTC Inspire 4G off of ebay and it arrived today.
The seller had mentioned that the phone was freezing / rebooting, but I figured.. that's because he's not running cm7, right?
Charged and booted up the phone and it turns out that the problem was a little worse than I first expected. I only experienced occasional freezing, and it only rebooted once, but there is a worse problem.
The phone loaded up fine, looked good, but tapping around on the home screen I got messages alerting me that system apps (htc sense, launcher, and even com.android.phone) had stopped responding or had shut down.
I hit the menu and go to settings. I scroll down the list and the entire list goes black. I hit home and it goes to a home screen, but with no launcher or icons. Basically, every few taps, the interface goes out. If you are on a menu it blacks out, if you are at home or press home after the menu blacks out you will get anywhere from pieces of icons / widgets to just a blank desktop. The live wallpaper even keeps going, but all of the interactive stuff quits. The disappearing menus didn't usually give app closed messages, they just went black. The home screen only gave app closed messages sometimes.
I thought this was a software problem, so I managed to root the phone and flash cm7. Everything booted good, but it still had the same problem of weird disappearing menus and home interfaces. I went ahead and flashed gapps and got the little intro thing about setting up my Inspire 4g that starts when you first boot your phone. I clicked through that but when it gets to connect wifi, the phone entirely freezes and I have to pull the battery.
I flashed inspiremod and nothing changed, tho that's for something else, so I'm not sure that's entirely relevant, but I was trying everything I could think of.
I'm definitely no expert on hardware, but it almost sounds like a ram problem, like it doesn't have enough to keep all of the interface going all the time and shuts it down or shuts parts of it down to work.. but I don't want to believe that. I'm really hoping that it's a software problem.
I got the phone at a good price and it came with an otterbox, so I won't be too disappointed if I can't get it fully functional, but it would still be a bummer.
Any help / advice / suggestions appreciated. Thanks, guys!
EDIT: I cleared the cache / dalvik cache before flashing / reflashing cm7, which I did once or twice
EDIT 2: Now if I leave it on the intro screen where it freezes it reboots after a minute or so. Gonna try flashing a different mod.. see if that helps.
That was a long post. But it was good, you gave a lot of info.
The cm7 zip that you downloaded, check the md5 checksum, make sureit matches whatever is in the op (first page) or wherever the md5 is, maybe where you downloaded it from. If it doesn't, download again.
Then,
from recovery,
Wipe data/factory reset.
Wipe dalvik
Format all partitions(except sd card)
Flash zip/rom.
Check if it works. If not, try using it without the sd card. If not, come back and report.
Sent from a dream.
Thanks for the reply and suggestions.
I check the md5, and it's good. I just did a factory reset and wiped cache and dalvik.. I'm unsure what you mean by format all partitions except sd card. I don't think I know how to do this with clockworkmod.
Started up without sd card and it still has the same problem. Looks great until I touch the screen, then everything disappears except the wallpaper.
Reboot in recovery and do it from there. You'll find format all partitions at the bottom... well, maybe. Cwm has an option to reboot in recovery, and I think if you press and hold the power button, select reboot and it will also ask you if you wantto boot into recovery. Cant remember if cm7 has it, it should.
After you wiped those, flash the rom. Stay in recovery and search for fix.permissions. Reboot.
Sent from a dream.
Just did that and re-flashed cm7, but the phone was still having the same problems.
I then repeated the process with a MIUI ICS rom and it seemingly worked for a little bit. I got a "Maps has stopped working" message, but I was able to slide back and forth through the home screens, and the menu came up. After I tapped though the menu a bit it started being weird again, but with MIUI the weirdness is different. It looked like the screen was divided up into 20 something smaller screens tiled across the display with messed up looking bits of screen in them.. weird..
If you are wiping correctly then I am out of ideas. I would say try a GB rom, however that is a strange issue and just might be a hardware problem. Tough, Im not sure.
Sent from a dream.
I've tried cm7, which is 2.3, and I've tried a 4.0.4 MIUI build and one other sense rom that didn't work well at all.
I'm wiping and flashing the same as I did on my LG p509, which works beautifully with cm7.
If it is hardware, hopefully it's something simple like the battery, and not bad RAM or anything serious..
Maybe if I keep at it I'll get it.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
Np. Keep us updated.
Sent from a dream.
I ordered a new battery for it, and that fixed the random reboots, which had been occurring more frequently, but the other problems were still there.
I flashed and re flashed and formatted and reinstalled a bunch, but still no luck. I then decided that I might take it by the local cell phone repair shop and see if they could fix it.
In preparation, I used aahk to flash the stock ruu with everything how it was when I got it. After booting it up, it seemed to be working ok.
I still get the occasional menu glitch, but it's so infrequent it's not an issue.
The phone still freezes up quite a bit when I'm using it, but it's nearly a useable device now!

Have you tried changing out the sd card? Having a bad sd card can cause all inds of odd issues
I booted it without an sd card before and couldn't tell the difference, but it had a lot more issues than just freezing then.
I haven't tried it since those other issues have stopped. I'll try that when I get home from work.

Zoom stuck in perpetual Boot Animation, but will load to Start Screen

OK Guys, I don’t like to bother you until I have already tried everthing I know how to try. The error and solution should hopefully become quite apparent to you once I explain, as you experts are far more knowledgable regarding Android than I will probably ever be.
I am a long time coder and IT manager, with a Bsc in Computer Science back in the early 90‘s, probably before a lot of you were born, sadly for me.....but, as I am sure you can relate, most of the errors I have run into are self inflicted because I HAVE to try the newest Rom, the Newset Kernals, the Newest tweats, Loaders, Launchers, Beta programs, even worse, ALPHA testing, etc, etc and I have wiped and rebuilt so many times it’s sickening.Factory resets, for me, are an ABSOLUTELY LAST RESORT, as I have my tablet set up for my Business Network(s), my home business network, my home entertainment network, multiple VPN’s, and a few custom apps that I had to write myself as there are none out there that do EXACTLY what I need them to do, so doing a Factory Reset is a very large undertaking, and even with Nandroid and other backups, I still have to spend days reconfiguring, initializing, and debugging (basically juggling to get them all to work in a semi harmonious configuration!)
Tablet: Motorola Xoom WIFI MZ604
Rom: CM-10.1-20130605-Nightly-Wingray.zip
Kernal/Loader: TWRP_2.5_RedLacE_Mjamocha_Theme.zip
Launcher: SPB-1.6.4
Fortunately, or at least I hope, this problem is a little different:
Everything has been running perfectly for more than a couple months. I have had no installation issues with other apps, no gliches, no delays, no slowdows, no anything. I wanted to reboot into recovery to do a Nandroid backup, since I hadn’t done one in more than a month. When I pressed the power button for my reboot options, I noticed, for the first time, an option that said “Desktop” (normal). Of course, curiousity getting the better of me, I tapped it, and it switched to “Desktop” (extemded. or Enhanced, I am not sure exactly which one). As soon as I changed that, my Xoom IMMEDIATELY jumped into the Cyanogen Boot Animation. It stayed in that state for about triple the time it normally does on boot, but eventually the main start screen came back up, so I tried to unlock the screen and return to what I was doing. Unfortunately, as soon as I touched the screen, it once again IMMEDIATELY jumped back to the Boot Animation. So I rebooted again, leaving it long enough so that Circle, a program that can act as a screen saver, among other things kicked in, so I thought I was OK. All I wanted to do was hold the power button down long enough to bring back up my power menu, but, alas, LITERALLY, the second I touched the power button.....BAM, back into B.A. No matter how long I left it, no matter what I have tried, always immediately back to the B.A.
Now, I have Full access to all files from Root Up, and can edit or delete any of them, so, logically, there has to be a configuration file that stored this Desktop Enhanced selection, which, by my logic, is about 99% chance of being the cause of this current issue. I believe the option is part of the SPB launcher, but could be wrong, since I have instaled a couple programs that add options to the reboot menu, however, I really do believe that it’s from the SPB Launcher.
ANYTHING that ANYONE of you would be able to do to assist me in fixing this WITHOUT haveing to do a factory reset and restore, would leave all of you forever in my debt.
Thanks so much in advance, and, though I will be checking the posts frequently, feel free to email or PM me.
Regards, Jason

[Q] Phone boots after ROM install, but has no launcher, etc

Hello, all. I've been playing around with my X920D and I've tried installing InsertCoin 3.0.6, but after the installation completes and the phone boots, I get stuck on a screen with what appears to be a default wallpaper and nothing else. If I slide down from the top of the screen, I can make the notification bar appear temporarily, but it goes away again after about a few seconds. There is no launcher, there are no icons, and it the phone's language seems that it is set to Japanese (or possibly Chinese, I'm not really sure). If I press the lock button, I can get to the lock screen and it displays a clock, some more text in I guess what is Japanese, and I can swipe to unlock and go back to the empty desktop. I can also change the volume, take screenshots, and connect the device to my computer (which recognizes it as an HTC Butterfly) and look around through the internal storage, but I'm kind of stuck if I want to do anything beyond that.
I've installed TWRP 2.7.0 with SELinux support, the bootloader is unlocked, and the phone does not have S-OFF. I'm really puzzled, because I'm able to flash a boot image with fastboot, I can install a ROM and the installation completes and the phone boots, but it doesn't seem that the OS has any functionality at all. I've also tried this with the NOS ROM, and I ended up with a black screen and a notification bar, pretty much exactly the same situation as what is happening with the InsertCoin ROM. I've looked through several threads here, I've seen a few instances of people having this issue, but I've not seen a solution for it. I've wondered if I might need to flash a new kernel, but I'm not entirely sure if that would solve the problem. Anyhow, if someone is able to provide assistance or knows anything about this issue, I'd be very appreciative.
EDIT: I've been doing some more digging, it seems that I don't actually have an X920d despite the back of my phone having "X920d" under the volume speaker (my phone has red capacative buttons and there was a European charger in the box when I went looking back through it for other clues). The ROMs I've tried were for the X920d, so I suppose that is the reason that they aren't working on my phone and why I'm encountering these weird problems. I'll see if I can locate a ROM for the X920e and try that out, but it doesn't seem like there is a version of InsertCoin for the X920e If everything goes well, I'll update here in case anyone else has this same problem.
EDIT 2: I was able to download a what looks like a stock Chinese ROM for the X920e and install it, everything went fine and my phone seems to be working now. I've still been unsuccessful in finding any other more custom ROM, but I guess this will do for now. If anyone happens to be reading and could point me in the direction of a cool ROM for the X920e, I'd be grateful
