I'm considering buying a Xoom, and I've been trying to read up on it, and it seems as though video playback has been discussed to great extent. Most of what I've read is about HD files (.mkv).
How is the video playback of .avi files on the stock player?
If it sucks, would you recommend any other apps? Or would I need to re-encode them?
I will use this when travelling, so I can't use any streaming software from my regular pc.
I have no problem with rooting and installing custom ROMs if that would improve anything!
Thank you!
Is it so much of a diffference it's worth doing it? Is it unwatchable if you don't?

In my opinion it is not worth doing. Just download Mobo Player from the market and you'll be fine. Not had 1 .avi that would not work with Mobo, nor noticed any difference in the quality.
No issues here either, there are a few things that I've reencoded due to size but not found any issues..
fyi I've been using freemaker video converter to reencode stuff if it needed doing.
On the xoom page on motos website it says that .ago is not nativly supported by the android OS, and that using decoders may reduce battery time if its not done on a hardware level. Any of you having trouble with battery life?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Mobo does both hardware and software rendering and there are other players on the market that will use hardware rendering.
As for battery life, I cant honestly say that I have seen a decrease that would make a difference to my useage.
Thank you all!

Just be patient, he has to support every LG phone that CM supports, he is the maintainer of CM on all LG devices.
Some day, our day will come that we have a fully working ICS ROM.
RC is a mastermind i dont know how he does it he is amazing , but im soo disappointed in these ROM's and im not blaming the devs, but hardware acceleration on the ROMS is nothing compared to stock, the stock rom seems smoother and way faster, and lack of drivers from LG is really annoying, do you know if LG would release a full source code with Nvidia drivers this april as its the expected of official ICS release
dumb question. What does video encoding do cause I can watch all videos and take pictures and record videos

Can you record 1080p? 24fps?
I couldn't.

I know many older but fairly OK computers otherwise that don't play 720p. So, no.

to get the best performence use mx video player ,
i was able to run a 1080p video with it at around 0.1 fps with super sound lag
Well... mom's netbook can't play 360p videos... and it has a 1.8GHz dualcore...(but it has no video card)
Say thanks you can run HQ YouTube... you need 1GHz CPU to run 720p videos, but this is with a good GPU (not a mobile one) and also nothing in background...
Oh and dual core 1.2GHz with mobile GPU can run 720p without problems (see Gnexus)
Just wait

If i ever want to watch hd movies on my netbook, i would just down scale them to just above 1024x600 resolution, as thats all you need, and dual core netbook will easily handle it =)

Nope mom has a very good netbook, and videos play on it like they do on the phone... we have hardware accelerated videos, netbooks don't... (GPU has about 16GHz on a 256MB GPU... so lot better with HW acceleration...)

Lol just googled a bit and found out oue GPU has 133MB and 128MHz clock speed (very very slow)
The funny thing is my old ATI has 64MB and 14GHz clock speed lol
And to tell you why the PS2 is so cool: it has 128MB and 28GHz clock!!!(10 years ago!!!)

Don't think about it, even If you found a player which can run it and you overclock to 806, still you'll run it below 7-8 FPS, which means it will be too laggy and the worst thing is that you can't enjoy that video, use your computer to convert it to 480p
is there any way to change video resolution without converting it?

I don't like trolls on xda. I assumed kiranbandre was asking a legit question to what he didn't know. Again, because I assume people here don't troll those in need. So I explained that umangleekha was in fact referring to the same thing by "converting".
So I'm not sure kiranbandre was not trolling and for the record, if he wasn't, I'm sorry, but I am sure you were. I don't like trolls on xda
I apologize to the MODs if I am out of line but I don't like being made fun of.

as long as you keep the video resolution to a width of 480 you won't see any difference.

Hi,
When I try to play HD Videos or streams it will mostly be shown in slowmotion and jerking (audio is normal),
sometimes it works normal.
Has anybody an idea on what the videoplayback depends or what configuration can be set to make this
contantly working.
I run CM10.1, AOKP Kernel, 1,2 Mhz, interactive gov, cfq shed
Regards
Michael

Actually I am installing CM again and I will try it when its all installed. Thanks so far.

Hey guys,
I havent flashed Jelly Bean yet but I think i know why for example Temple Run 2 lags.
The GPU has not enough RAM allocated.
At GB the GPU has around 200 of RAM
At JB it has only around 100.
Anybody know how to change it?
Even if u play 720P video, it lags and sometimes freezes I experienced that.

200MB of RAM allocated to the GPU? That's impossible, on GB we had 555MB of usable RAM, 213MB was hardware reserved, some of this was allocated to the camera, some for HD 720p playback and a tiny amount for the GPU itself, the specific amount to be allocated is kernel dependent. You can't do anything about that. The change to kernel 3.0 brought several changes, the whole Mali libs were reworked and newer modules were used, that should bring better performance in theory.
The reason behind the lags in Temple Run 2 may be either hardware acceleration (which may not be working as it should) or a GPU lib issue. Both shall be fixed in the final firmware. You can't just expect things to work right away in such an experimental firmware which wasn't even meant to be used on a daily basis.

yes, basically it is not for end user, this is just experimental rom so we can find what's inside the rom (feature etc) and find some bug if exist.

Ever thought that this "leak" brings Samsung free testing? In a relatively short amount of time people found some bugs with battery drain and BT issues.
It could be a premeditated release to help developers build a bug free firmware sooner.
Next step would be to make the source code public and then they would get help with code generation as well
Just a theory, don't want to start any flames

To any of you who might have concerns, there is no doubt about it -- performance is lower on JB at this point, but hell...
IT'S NOT GPU RELATED.
The issues you've been reporting directly address video decoding issue and/or lower CPU performance in some scenarios.
GPU does not take care of video encoding/decoding. My guess is there is still no full HW accelerated decoding available.
On a side note, vRAM is irrelevant to GPU performance as well. vRAM keeps pre-rendered frames and texture data. How does that quantity make GPU faster or slower? If there was not enough vRAM to handle all the texture data and pre-rendered frames - you'd see artifacts on the screen, yet you don't.
