I'm getting the Droid 2 Global, coming from a Samsung Fascinate, I was wondering if there were any issues with this phone that will dissapoint? (Last phone, GPS and 3G data failed to work for me at all, AND IT WAS MY 3RD REPLACEMENT!!)
Also, a couple more questions I forgot to ask.
1. I heard about the the bootloader...is it that bad?
2. How easy is it to get back to full stock?
3. How easy is it to flash roms and kernels to this phone?
4, How are you doing today?
I havnt really encountered any or heard about any major ones.
The bootloader is locked, which means you cant install custom kernels and such. However there are still quite a few fantastic roms that you can flash onto your device.
Very easy actually. SBF instructions in on here and many other sites, very easy to follow, takes maybe 20 min or so, most of which is install time. (Aka, you doing nothing)
Really easy, imo. Just look at any of the rom threads and it shows the instructions of how to install. (And typically the instructions will pretty much be the same from rom to rom.)
Horrible. But that's neither here nor there, as the saying goes. Thanks for asking though.
One more last question, I promise.
I was wondering if D2 roms are able to run on the D2G, is it possible to be ported?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
You can flash D2 roms but you will need to run Romer after that in order to make it work on the D2G. I believe that the SIM card slot doesn't work if you have a D2 rom flashed though but I could be wrong.
That's great! I don't think I will be using the sim card anytime soon, so I'm good.

Im guessing the battery life will dissapoint. The build quality, keyboard, processor and screen will not

I'm back, I received my droid but I noticed that they didn't send me a sim card with it, should they have?
I am very pleased with this phone, battery too soon to tell, but I hate the motoblur already.

You don't really need a SIM card if you're going to be using CDMA. If you go abroad and SIM from a company wherever you're going so you don't need one right now.

I think he is referring to the baseband update we received with the LG Gingerbread update, which wasn't to long ago (less then a month?).
While we got gingerbread officially and a baseband (from LG), the O2x just got a baseband.
The good thing is now we have a few basebands running around, maybe they can compare the two (coding wise) and pump out a true Dual 3G band like we were supposed to get.
nope

Lets settle and end this silly (an dangerous) discussion ringht now.
The O2X and G2x basebands are TOTALLY incompatible! If you want to brick your phone with respect to being ever able to connect to a network - go ahead and flash an Ox2 baseband.
Paul at Modeco has been making Ox2 basebands available for flashing, as due to all the different carries over there, there are many available.
He made a script to restore the basebands of Ox2's that were messed up when some owners made the mistake of flashing G2x software on them (his "disaster recovery" tool). He HAS NOT created one for recovering a G2X from flashing Ox2 firmware and/or basebands on it.
I asked him to, but he apparently has moved totally away from the G2x. A tool like that could have saved a good number of devices (like mine) that could not otherwise be recovered from the LG Updater issue.

The new baseband for the g2x has been amazing for me personally on gps. 95% of the time I lock within 15s. I did change my settings to tracking and ms based. And it helped get a lock in some places that didn't get one previously.

what are you settling. the poster and those discussing are quite aware tht basebands are not compatible with other devices. the OP was questioning simply due to the month newer date on the o2x one. so i dont think anyone was thinking about flashing it. He was just wondering if there may be newer one out there. than someone mentioned modifying the baseband which i stated i didnt think was possible or had ever been done. no one has answered that one for sure. But i havent seen it. ther is nothing silly about the discussion. probably worthless since there isnt a newer baseband available for the g2x at this time but what is sillly about this discussion?
Hi guys,
I don't own atrix 2 yet but m planning to get one soon so I thought to hit up xda . I am not new to rooting and modding but still don't have idea about locked bootloader as previously I owned optimus one which had unlocked bootloader.
So all I want to know is locker bootloader guarantees that phone wont get hard bricked!!
Also is this device better then htc sensation as u all r having real life experience with the device.. . Thanks

The phone can ABSOLUTELY brick regardless of whether the ATRIX 2's bootloader is locked! Both soft bricking AND hard bricking can occur if your boot image or system image gets borked during a flash or FXZ or by flashing a firmware-based rom that is incompatible with your device. Be sure you read, understand, and have backups in place before doing anything...

Coming from samsung phone i was also not that aware of concept of locked bootloaders but the simple thing you should understand with locked bootloader is YOU CANNOT FLASH ANY KERNEL THAT HASNT BEEN SIGNED OR VERIFIED BY MOTOROLA. previously i assume you could flash different ROMS or Kernel at your own will but in the device with locked bootloader you cannot flash custom or unsigned bootloader

Kind of wrong. a missflash is recoverable by reflashing almost all the time.
That said, it is still possible, just look at Jim, he's gone through 4 or something crazy. It is however very hard, and as long as you are being carefull, you should be fine

Thanks, I just thought as the bootloader wont get affected so it can still enter fast boot mode irrespective of flashing bad system image and then from fastboot, recovery and everything else can be put back into place, thus the only type of bricking possible being soft brick. Am I wrong with this!!

A misflash or somehow screwing up the boot image can cause a bootloop in CWM (this, coming from Jim's knowledge) and can render the phone soft bricked in a sense, but can be FXZ'd with some understanding on how to do this.
I agree lkrasner, as long as you know what you're doing and how to recover in case something unexpected occurs, you should be all set!

This is true. The ONLY reason I have hard bricked my phone so many times, is because I was trying to break the bootloader open, and or bypass it with some code and an unsigned kernel, and I was able to do it, but it will only last one boot, then the pone is hard bricked, and and will not even power on after something like that.
So if you really are not interested in kernel flashing and super overclocking (we can overclock to about 1.2 GHZ without issue), then you should be able to recover from just about anything.
Regarding OP's inquiry about the Sensation vs. Atrix 2...
Spec wise they are even, each phone takes a couple categories, but you probably already knew that.
Since the bootloader is unlocked on the Sensation, it has a ton more ROMs and is way easier too customize, so it wins there, honestly . Although our awesome devs are still persevering well!
From personal experience, the Atrix 2 has satisfied most of my needs. There is the fact that it is not officially compatible with a lot of games, but installing them manually actually shows that they work fine! This phone software has never crashed on me, and app crashes are few and far in between (I can't remember the last time it happened). Great hardware too, only problem is the bootloader.
The Atrix 2 community is great though, it really is like a family, and you can really get answers to questions.

Whats keeping me from sensation is that it uses snapdragon processor while the omap used in atrix 2 uses 45nm architecture which is more efficient in processing and battery, also the camera of sensation is not upto the mark as read in reviews. But on the other side sensation is better looking device with better interface i.e. sense and also better after market firmware support, so this leaves me out in dilemma

You will not be able to flash the international version. Different radios, different processor, different RAM. At best, you soft-brick, at worst, you blow up /efs and effectively turn your phone into a $500 media player.
As previously discussed here, it will be Q4 or Q1 2013 before the Verizon S3 gets JB.
Next summer is probably more accurate for Verizon
Good news is CM10 should have the bugs worked out long before Verizon pushes Jelly Bean.
I don't know about next summer, but I do not have much faith in VZW being timely either.
My "hoping" was based around the fact that starting with Jelly Bean, manufacturers were given the source code much much much sooner than past experience so that they can try to drown out a little bit of the fragmentation within the Android ecosystem by upgrading devices to the same versions together rather than scattered all over the place because "they didn't have time and demand was too intense". Someone somewhere (I don't remember where) said it was intended to move device manufacturers releasing major os updates from the 6-12 month mark up to about 2 months, if not sooner. Again, I don't have source, I can dig for it though.
Not that I wanna open that can of worms again, but now that I think about it, it would be rather strange if Galaxy S3 gets JB pushed "in 2 weeks" when the Verizon Galaxy Nexus hasn't even got it yet.....
I just hope that flash still work's or you can block the JB OTA update.

Flash is DEAD for JB not ICS. For one and two, I will get over it when HTML 5 is not crap and works right. ( And most web sites like youtube work well with it. And can do every thing flash can.)
That and even Nexus 7 guy's can get flash to work via side loading flash player with fire fox 16 or side loading the stock ICS browser.
You can use HTML 5 on the five or so web's sites it works on. I will be doing 1080p video with just about any web site able to work. Have fun.
Hopefully this comes out soon with some bug fixes over anything else that comes out with JB. This phone is great but their are some issues, and I'll wait for Synergy to have a stable rom with Flash working. No Flash, no go.

I think maybe deathbynukes meant to flash the verizon phone in such a way to enable global operation. While the international version of the phone uses different processor/radios/etc, as you state, the US/vzw version uses the same Qualcomm Snapdragon as the Droid Razr family, already "globalized" by verizon. This chip is capable of either CDMA or GSM operation, as long as the proper radio firmware and software is included in the phone. Samsung's own FCC filings mention GSM operation. So maybe there is a ray of hope that international roaming will come to the vzw S3... but it's not a bright, shiny ray and I'm not reaching for my sunglasses just yet.

I notice that the Ultar\Maxx are coverd here. Will the Mini also be part of this form or seperate?
Picked one up for the wife and she loves it. Nice upgrade from the Razr.
I'm loving mine. It's what I've been waiting for. A manageable simple phone with awesome battery life, great screen, specs that compete with the big dogs, and wireless charging to boot. I think people on the forum are confused on how to split these phones up considering they have never had three (technically four but the popularity of the moto x plus the GSM/CDMA gives it the right to it's own section) phones so identical. I'm sure some very small tweaks will be required but I wouldn't even go as far as to say roms need to be "ported" between the three. I'm surprised that I haven't seen really anything about this phone in xda. Verizon has sold quite a few from what I've gathered.

I'm about to pull the trigger on buying a Droid Mini for Verizon. I'm coming from a 2010 Rooted/ROMd HTC Incredible original.
Been waiting for smaller form factor, and it's got a nice non-bloatware Jelly Bean stock OS that's got many bells and whistles I only thought rooted ROMs would give me...plus wireless charging and USB external support(?) Played with one for an hour last night in the store and other than the Back button being a little too far down-left for my stubby thumb....it's a vast jump into the present from my legacy 2010 phone.
My real hope is to see if/when anyone gets it to successfully work on a T-Mobile SIM somehow. I never had a SIM card phone before, and didn't think Verizon phones had them, but apparently under the volume rocker lives a SIM on these Droids.
Verizon plan would be $10 less than I currently pay at a total of $95/mo, and that's including "edge" aka "Jump" plan so I'm not locked into a 2 year relationship with the hardware. However, I could get on an equivalent T-Mobile plan for $50/mo.....but I don't think I want the HTC One Mini...even though the size is prob good, I beat on phones to much to have a sleek aluminum gallery piece...plus I don't want Sense and BlinkFeed or BeatsAudio.....
I know - long and boring.

The Ultra works without any modifications on At&t, besides obtaining a nanoSIM. This means the phone is sim unlocked so TMobile should work as well.
See Source
I imagine the Mini will be the same. The only problem is there is no 1700Mhz band on these phones so on Tmobile you will only get 2G data unless you live in a 1900Mhz refarmed area.

I just bought my Mini and love it! I came from a long line of HUGE phones and wanted one that I can fit in my pocket and it doesnt look like I am carrying around a tablet LOL. It is the perfect size and form for me! It packs the power of the bigger phones in a smaller package! Just be careful if you root and load anything,,, it can be very fickle and have had to FXZ it twice already, but then again I flash and mod alot!
BTW this phone has sold a lot and needs its own thread,,,it will reduce a lot of the "hey can I flash this on my Mini" questions!!!
Can anyone confirm whether or not the Mini works with T-Mobile?
Found a thread where somebody tried a cut-down T-Mobile SIM and it did NOT work in the Mini.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/motorola-droid-mini/307709-droid-mini-t-mobile.html
However, he mentions that he hopes his results aren't because it's a cut-down SIM. I would be using a genuine TMO Nano SIM.
Droid Mini???
Would love a bump on this and an answer if the Mini will have it's own section, or if software mods performed on the Moto X can be cleanly replicated on the Droid Mini (meaning Mini users should be in the Moto X section).
Being new to the mini and this forum (and Androids in general), there has been a mountain of info to read through. Having some clear-cut answers would certainly be a great help - aside from the rooting procedure on the Ultra, which says the Mini should work as well, there seems to be very little information on a great phone that's being pushed heavily by VZW.
Thank you!

There's some similarity to the Moto X, but the Mini is considerably more similar to the Ultra, so if the Mini doesn't get its own section, we're in the right place.
Also, an update to my post before yours, the Mini works fine with a genuine T-Mobile SIM.

Yes, the more I read, the more I understand that. Coming from modding a few years ago, I'm a bit jumpy with trying mods cross phones and need to remember that we are dealing with an OS that has cross model similarities. Learning about androids is almost as bad as Radiocomms learning curve lol
Unfortunately, I have yet to see confirmation of the Ultra/Maxx rooting procedure working on the Mini (unless I missed it). I see that NWKENT has a cleaner rooting package posted but the file is for the Maxx (and again, jumpy about cross model files). Any guidance is always appreciated.

I'm not familiar with NWKENT's rooting package, but the SlapMyMoto thread to root KitKat does indeed work on the Mini.

Being new to the forum, I'm not able to post in this section and inquire.

The thread here correct? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616104
If I understand that thread correctly, you must be rooted 1st on 4.2.2 before doing that method. If you have done this with the Mini, you used JCase's updated rooting method found here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45598648
I appreciate any response, I am just trying to get my ducks, and knowledge, in a row. Also, what rooted version are you currently on (4.4?) and have you noticed any issues?

Yes, those are the correct threads.
Yes, you must be rooted on 4.2.2 first. It's very important not to skip steps or take any shortcuts (people want to skip the fxz step, but that will result in an unrooted phone that as of now cannot be rooted).
Yes, I'm currently on 4.4 rooted after following the steps in the SlapMyMoto thread. I do have one issue, sometimes when I plug in a USB cable, my phone reboots. It did this even with no apps installed and is intermittent. Not sure if it's a KitKat bug and I don't remember if JB had the same problem or not because I was on JB all of a day.
I should have posted here. Please no flames.
In my experience many a time things work in spite of common knowledge.

I am still on 4.2.2 and I do not see this problem - and I have plugged in to both my comp and the wall adapter. I doubt this helps your problem but I can at least confirm that I'm not seeing it.
