[Q] [Q/A] Best kernel for BLD - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys! I'm new to android and I'd like to know which kernel implements BLD the best. I'm running codename 3.6.6 (with air kernel I guess) and BLD isn't great on this rom (I've set the bld delay to 0ms in nstools, but whenever I tap one of the buttons they light up for 1ms and then go off again).
I was thinking of GLaDOS kernel but will it support codename 3.6.6 (jellybean) or will I need to flash some other rom?
If I have to flash some other rom which one would you suggest?
(I've got a Nexus s )
Thanks in advance!

Do you just want the backlight off all the time?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

Yes, I prefer having the backlight (on the 4 buttons) always off. But I want those buttons to function normally.

The minimum delay is 500ms regardless of the kernel

I recommend marmite kernel

I recommend reading the forum rules before posting around this site again.
Asking about best ROMs/kernels etc is a great way to get threads locked down.

I'm facing same problem...Yesterday i installed new rom named NIK Sensetion XL...or smthng...It has sense 3.5 wid android 2.3.3 ...this rom is overclockin my cpu from 1024 mhz to 1228 mhz...i dun like this overclockin...i used set cpu bt stil it fail to control my cpu...how can i stop this overclockin??? N use stock cpu clockspeed 1024 mhz...plzzz reply....

I'm using codename 3.6.6 and i've set the delay to 0ms (I guess codename uses air kernel) and the backlight switches off a lot faster than 500ms (I've tried delay=500ms as well and the lights go off a lot slower with that setting)

I'd be EXTREMELY careful running your CPU at that speed. 1.5 has been considered "safe" by most people, but anything over that and you're tempting fate. Sure, it's cool to see your phone running at 1.8 or 1.9ghz, but your CPU is going to be forced waaaay out of its specifications and it's possible to damage it beyond repair. This is especially true if you are over-volting. Heat + Voltage = CPU Killers. However, even if you aren't over-volting, it could still draw more power than it was designed to do, thereby increasing heat, overstressing CPU and power supply...
So yeah, be careful.
Thanks man i just OC to this point to se what this phone can do i think this is the first and last High Quadrant can reach becauce later on the day i try to repeat the same benchmark and no reach the 3400 points. I think the CPU was enought stressed and now cant handle 1.9 Ghz. freq. but is cool. Right Now im running with LordMod 4 CFS clocked at 1.3 Ghz and works greathe. this give me 2700 +/- Quadrants and its enought power to make all kind of task and apps running a breeze.
Running any LorDMod kernel results in no wifi for me. I'm being lazy with manually pushing the .ko file though, so I dunno.
WiFi works fine here. Im. Use cyanogen mode 7 with lordmod 4.0

Favourite combinations?

What are all your favorite kernel/rom combinations for performance and battery wise?
at the moment im using CyberGR-MOD|NS.NGN ICS v.7 HYBRID with Matr1x kernel which i find is very smooth and normal battery life.
What are you guys playing around with?
nuhetri-reloaded v2.1.0 (unreleased at the date of my post) + Air Kernel 3.0

Basically...
This is not an appropriate place to ask.
I can not use my phone for 5 hours and come back to it with the exact same amount of battery. Then I can get about 4 hours of on screen time with constant data use and overall heavy usage. Gets me by a day at school with 50% battery life (or 44%). And it is fast.
Oh and this is the wrong section . Ask in General
Nexus S (GSM i9020a)
CM9 Nightly Kang (Build 5 of 2.1)
Eugene's Kernel (Speedy-7)
OC 1100/100 (conservative)
wrong section...
nonetheless, IMHO, best combination is AOKP Milestone 3 w latest Matrix...

[Q] Which is the best ICS Rom-kernel combo for Nexus?

Hi guys, in these days I'm trying many different roms to chose the best one. I've tried these: AndroidMe, codename android 1.3.3, CyanogenMod 9 v4.0.3 v2.1 and CyberGR-MOD with the respective stock-kernel but no one did satisfy my desires.
I just want these "mods"
- configurable Toggles in status bar (so that i can switch on and off 3g data just with 2 screen taps)
- Battery icon with % of battery left
- Configurable Lockscreen (I need at maximum 4 targets)
- TouchWake (the screen turns on with just a finger touch on it)
- Maximum frequence of cpu at 1,2 Ghz
Now comes the big problem! With all the roms I've tried some of this was not available. The best one was cyberGr-Mod, but I had a lot of battery drain.
Which combo Rom+ kernel do you suggest me to have the things I wrote before and also a great battery Life?
Thanks a lot
There are quite some points you want in your rom, I'm not sure if there is any that fits you needs.
But let's see:
- configurable Toggles in status bar (so that i can switch on and off 3g data just with 2 screen taps)

I know that feature only from CyanogenMod. That latest version (which you also tried) has them build in but not to a 100% complete. Almost every Rom needs some more development to get all the features implemented it should have, so maybe you need to wait a little.
- Battery icon with % of battery left

This option does not need to be implemented in a Rom, you can easily change the batter indicator yourself with just flashing the Icon you want. At least for CM9 there are some links in the Rom-Thread.
- Configurable Lockscreen (I need at maximum 4 targets)

I'm not sure if any Rom has that feature but it also sounds to me like this could be done by an additional program?
- TouchWake (the screen turns on with just a finger touch on it)

Same here, maybe there is an app for that.
- Maximum frequence of cpu at 1,2 Ghz

Most Roms and custom kernels have more overclocking, but that it no need at all. You could either use SetCPU to limit the cpu or for example a Rom like CM9, this has additional options to limit the cpu.
Now comes the big problem! With all the roms I've tried some of this was not available. The best one was cyberGr-Mod, but I had a lot of battery drain.

Why not taking cyberGR when you liked it most and try some other kernels till you find what you want. I would try either the GlaDOS kernel or the matr1x one and then trying different governors in the cpu settings.
aokp + air kernel
All that u want i have in my combo (ROM+Kernel). I use apex (bixie) v.1.0.0 + matr1x kernel v.16.5 (see a review of this combo on nexusshacks - really rocks, i get with normal usage almost 2 days of battery and there are really a lot of tweakable options).
The best combo i've tryied.
cheers.
If i helped u somehow, pls hit thanks button

forgot to mention, whatever rom u're using, try out NStools ans see if the tweakable options there avaliable are enough for u.

for touchwake and Configurable lockscreen they are embedded in many roms

I've just tried tooverclock to 1,1ghz, otherwise the phone was not stable

Sorry for the strange method to answer you but the multiquote-button didn't work
@ sean1984 : Which rom AOKP do you suggest me? is cyanogen the best AOKP or there is something better?
@ kalitza: I went suddenly to check the rom you suggested me on nexushacks, there are many positive comments but also some users which couldn't install the rom for some problems... above all, I will surely give it a try.
Now I'm testing Codename android 1.3.3 and everything except the statusbar toggles (limited to 4 and not customizable, that means no data toggle) seems to work well, i'll use it again a couple of days to have a better idea and then (after nandroid backup if everything in the rom is ok) I will try the one you suggested me.
About NSTools, where can I find the last release? does every rom have a specific release of NSTools or it is universal for every Rom?
in CNA 1.3.3 go to Settings - Interface and touch Notification widget text, it will open toggle menu where you can choose which ones you prefer

@ kalitzka: It's really funny that in the site nexussha*** they now suggest to try the CodeName ICS ROM with Matr1x Kernel, what i'm trying now.
They say "Here’s another combo you can expect some smooth performance with great battery life, CodeName ICS ROM with Matr1x kernel. I think this one, Crossbones, and Bigxie/Apex ROMs are probably the best I’ve tried so far".
P.s. I wrote something to you also in post N. 5.. I'm new in writing here in xda so I don't know well how to use all these forum quoting - quick replying different buttons

Don't worry, you'll become a regular crackflasher very soon Speaking about ROMs, my favorites are CNA and Nuhetri, pair them with speedy-7 or air kernel and you're good to go, just delete RAMDISK folder in speedy-7 zip if you're flashing it on CNA. It's great to see how ICS mods keep evolving, thanks again to devs and their hard work...

Today I'm trying CNA with kernel Matrix, good battery life but the phone seems a little bit laggy sometimes.. I will surely try the Speedy-7 that you suggested.
Yes It's a great thing that these roms keeps evolving, the only thing that I don't like very much is that there are so many different roms that is so difficult to chose the best one, imagine if there will be only 2-3 roms (for example 1 MIUI, 1 cyanogen, 1 AOSP) and all the developers focused toghether their efforts just in these 3 Roms, I think that now we would already have perfect kernel-roms completely free of problems, full of features, and with 2 days battery life
Yes, I agree with that. We have too many similar ROMs, but I see more and more teams forming, like CNA for example and the result is obvious. I am no dev, but it's kinda hard for a single person to maintain ROM on regular basis, refreshing it with new mods and stuff like that due to lack of time... So, hope to see more teams developing a single ROM

I think that nowadays, after that giant work, no one has as much experience as you in this field

[Q] P5110 CM10 nightlies: get a blank black lit screen when wake device

I've searched high and low for this issue, and I've found hits, but nothing that seems to help me or fully answer my questions.
I flashed CM10 nightlies straight away when I got my new Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 last week. Whilst it's a great ROM like with all official CM's, the tab sporadically doesn't wake up after a sleep.
Now the known issues from http://teamhacksung.org/wiki/index.php/CyanogenMod10:GT-P5100:Nightly:Known_issues says:
Code:
The screen many a times does not respond to touches for unlocking, needed to reboot the tablet.
Which seems to be what I'm experiencing. All I would like to know if I'm the only one experiencing this issue and if not, do people know if the issue is being actively worked on and is there a workaround in the mean time?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response. I'm not overclocking running at the default 300MHz to 1008MHz from the stock CM kernel settings on the interactive govenor.
I did however install the kernel from the AOKP thread. Ran that over the weekend and never saw the screen wake problem again. As soon as I installed the latest CM nightly the screen wouldn't wake from sleep again so I re-installed the AOKP kernel and everything was working again.
(I also noticed that the AOKP kernel came with CPU settings of 300MHz to 1200MHz on the interactive govenor - I put that back to 300MHz to 1008MHz for safety but didn't see the screen wake problem during my testing with the higher clock speeds).
Has anyone got any info on this screen wake issue?
The amount of times I was having to reset the tablet when I was using the stock CM kernel meant it wasn't usable as a daily device until I installed the AOKP kernel. How can I get in touch with the CM guys to see if I can help with this screen wake issue?
You'll need to find a proxy to post for you in the dev forums in Codeworkxx's thread. You'll need a logcat of the issue.

[Q] BLN and Viber on Nexus S

Hello everyone!
I have a question.
I have a Nexus S with BLN turned on. It's working excellent except when i receive a message

turns on.
So my question is: Is there a way to disable the screen turning on when i get a message on Viber so that
BLN could work?
Thanks!

If not change kernels and use NSTools so u can control the length of the BLN.
Some ROMs kernels are just basic, so getting a better kernel gives u more options and control.
Search ur ROMs thread to see what kernels work best with it.
Good luck

It's a Viber issue. Viber team has stated multiple times they would fix this, yet haven't because they lack the "man power". Usually a pretty simple fix, heck, it has to be implemented for the screen to turn on rather than for it NOT to turn on, but whatever.
