[Q] [CM10 Nightlies] gpslocationprovider wakelock on 10/18 Nightly - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hi All,
I am putting this here in the Q&A section because I don't have any posts yet and I can't put it in the dev section. I'm running CM10 nightlies on the Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and I'm currently on 10/18. What I've noticed today, and I haven't found any information on it yet.
This morning I used my maps and GPS to get around town a bit and then came to work. When I looked at BBS a few hours later I noticed a kernel wakelock on PowerManagement. After some investigation, I learned I needed to look into partial wakelocks and found a corresponding wakelock on the GPSLocationprovider which I imagine is from my use this morning.
From what I've read so far, this has been an issue in other CM10 nightlies for other devices but I'm not sure if it has been reported yet for this one. I know to fix it, I can do a reboot but just curious if it is being looked at.
Thanks and apologies if it is listed elsewhere - i did search and couldn't find it.

I have the same thing, although it doesn't seem to be burning through the battery like actually having GPS on. If it helps, I do have tasker automatically shut off GPS when the screen is off so I'm not sure why it would be running in the background.

I have read most of that thread and have been unable to find a solution which works for me.
Based upon my reading in other device threads, some people get this wakelock if they use GPS for anything and then attempt to turn it off. For example, if you turn on GPS, use a maps application for a short while, close the maps application and turn off GPS, the wakelock is born. Even if you kill any active maps services, it will still be there.
I am under the impression that a flavor of this issue can be caused by location aware apps such as Google Maps and Facebook, but the issue where it is constantly active for hours on end, is perhaps an inherent issue in the 4.0.x and 4.1.x, kernels. I have found many people complaining of this issue on many different flavors of roms (ICS / JB) and hardware (HTC, Samsung, LG).
One user's solution was to never turn GPS off, but will continue to look for a better solution.

Its Google now, turn it off and see if it Persists in bbs

First there is a thread in general section devoted to wakelocks. Please search.
Second never post in dev section unless you are dropping a ROM kernel or mod.

Even without Google Now enabled I can recreate this wakelock without fail. GPS on, use GPS, GPS off, wakelock materializes.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. Has anyone who has had this issue resolved it?
Like promiseoc, I can get the wakelock every time I use the gps, and shut it off later. So far, I've tried the fix in bbs using Gemini Manager and disabling latitude and all location services. I'm also not signed into google now. I use Latitude occasionally, but make sure to shut it off when not in use.
So far, I've had this problem on each of the AOSP-based roms I've tried (CM10, Liquid, and Slim). Great roms, all of them, but any other suggestions on what else I can try?

I guess we are just supposed to keep GPS on and forget about it. I don't like to because of paranoia but it seems like that's the fix. Happens across a library of devices.

Oh well. If that's the only solution, so be it. I was always under the belief that drained battery, but then again I've never tested how much it does. May not be a big deal. Thanks.

The wakelock goes away if you reboot and I think it also does if you plug your phone into a charger even briefly. Of course, ensure it is not a charger that causes the vbus_wakelock.

Goes away with reboot but then you lose battery whilst media scanner runs. I now leave GPS on and forget about it. That is interesting about the charger, I will have to check it out.

Any word if this will be worked on in the new update?

If you leave GPS enabled it's a non-issue.

There's definitely a major bug somewhere in OS

My phone no longer reboots itself or freezes. It hasn't now for over a week but what tends to happen is after about 2 days of use it starts to lag and slow down like crazy. After I reboot it, its again super fast and smooth.
Its almost like there's a memory leak somewhere that is causing this and maybe certain apps cause it more than others? All I know is this has happened twice now and a reboot makes a huge difference.
Also and not sure if this is related but my GPS stops working until I reboot too. I think it's some app I have on the phone that's hitting a bug in the OS and causing this.
Maybe if it gets bad enough it causes reboots like people have been having?

funny, i just realized this tonight as well. I had some probs w/ tmo service and had to do a reboot after talking to customer service. Yesterday was my last reboot. It was flying afterwards. Very noticeable.

This patch addresses that issue. I experienced the same thing but when I did this I no longer get it. Hope it helps!
Bunch of people are now posting that they see issues after patching so I'm not sure I'm willing to try that yet.

I had the same thing happen last night...GPS would not start no matter what I tried until I rebooted the phone then it worked fine. I agree, there certainly gremlins in this software.
Here's hoping something is coming soon (see my post about the new software update message!).
I wonder if the bug is affecting phones differently. My only problem is my dam wifi. Will not connect under any setting. When it does connect little to no data can be sent. Some else posted this also.

Agreed.. I've been following that thread.. The first clue was "some apps came up missing". Then a confirmation, and then another... and then I bookmarked the thread and decided to have some patience.
Yes good idea me too!. You'll also notice a bunch of people saying it made no difference. So not even worth the risk IMHO!
This just happened again to me. Did you have anything installed that checks location frequently? Shopkick maybe? Have you uninstalled any T-Mobile apps? I'm wondering what causes this since I don't remember having this problem before.

The only thing I'm aware of is Weatherbug, but it's been installed almost since I got the phone (I have it set to track my location).
Um...that patch doesn't patch any kernel files therefore it won't do anything about crashing.
Yeah I noticed this yesterday, navigation refused to start, and things were being klunky, a nice reboot fixed it up!
I notice after a few hours/days things like the add widget menu start lagging pretty bad.
All the more reason to hope hope hope for CM7 with the quickness.
Do you still have Telenav installed? I removed it so not sure if maybe somehow it's related.
I have Shopkick installed, Weatherbug Elite, Beautiful Widgets which I all believe use network location services although none use GPS except Shopkick.
My guess is that the network location API has a bug and crashes so that's why GPS stops working because when it stops working, the GPS can still be turned off and on and apps report it's on but they don't get any response.
I don't use GPS often enough to know how long I've been having this problem. Apart from this, the slowness over time is the main thing I've noticed.
I think weatherbug might be causing weird issues. Ever since I updated a few days ago, when I reboot my g2x and my nexus, I'll get a little box stating it cannot update my location. Altough it does update my location, lol! My GPS will still turn on though!

I have not rooted as I didn't want the restoration hassle if I decided not to stick with this phone so yes, I do still have Telenav installed. My Weatherbug (free version) does turn GPS on to follow me.
After last nights GPS failure to start, the phone gave me fits late morning/early afternoon. I had no bars with an "x" and yet had a data connection (without 2G or 4G shown) at very slow speeds. Rebooted several times and had other similar odd behaviors.
At this point, I am giving serious consideration to ditching the phone before my 20 day trial is up and holding out for the SGS2. My TW Bionix running Vibrant works flawlessly with the single exception of flaky GPS. The big problem with SGS2 is the 4.3" screen...I really don't want a phone bigger than this so perhaps the MT4G might be a better choice.
Decisions...decisions...
OK, now the re-boots are starting. My GPS once again failed to start tonight so I tried to toggle it and it wouldn't turn off/on. I also normally leave bluetooth on all the time and I tried turning it off as well and it wouldn't turn off. It finally did turn off and when trying to turn GPS and bluetooth back on the phone slowed WAY down then re-booted.

[FIX] GPS Fix per Verizon Rep for S3

I posted this for a new member who could not post on his own. Welcome and thank Silver1882 for this potentially great find if it can be proven out by the senior members that have documented this problem with GPS. If it can't be proven we will pull it down and/or the mods can move it as a potential fix to general.
"My gps wasn't working on my phone. I took it to the Verizon store after I had flashed back to stock, they messed with it for a little while and then ordered me a refurbished one. I received it the next day and when I powered it on guess what the gps didn't work. So I called tech support and to my surprise the person that answered the phone actually knew what she was talking about.
She told me the gps issue is a Samsung issue, (even though is only effects Verizon and sprint phones) they are working on an update to fix it. But in the mean time she told me how to do a work around to get it working. Here is what she had me do."
Go to Settings
Application manager
click all at top
go to Google services framework
clear data
go to settings
Application manager
click all at top
go to maps
clear data
uninstall updates
Go to location services
turn off VZW Location service(leave it off to)
Power cycle phone
update maps from android market
now the gps should be working.
"After she walked me threw that I went back to my original phone and tried it on that one to and my gps started working on that one also so I sent Verizon there refurbished one back.
I hope this helps others and they will quick blaming the ROM for the problem."
Thanks Silver. I will bookmark this one as I have seen this reported on all rom thread.
wonder if everyone should do this after flashing a ROM, because I had this problem when I went to Cleanrom. back to stock using clockwork nandroid and no GPS issues.

That is what we are trying to find out. Much better than flash unknown configuration files and such. If this works it looks to be much safer and actually looks like a benign solution that if it doesn't work can't make the problem worse. If it is a known issue by Samsung/Verizon there will be an upcoming fix and this could be a safe work around until then.
A VZ rep tells you to leave off VZ location services, I love it! I've actually never enabled it and never had a GPS problem between flashes. I guess paranoia pays off sometimes.

HaHa. I hear ya. But should be able to turn back on after reboot for the noobs that want the feds to know where they at.
Yeah, they need to do something about this. I always have people report this problem. Im gong to direct theme here and see if it works.
Just tried it. Took a little longer for lock, but 15/25 satellites after 45 seconds and 3m accuracy on JellyWiz indoors.
Well I just happen to have my original phone and a refurbished phone sitting in front of me because the GPS was crap on my original. With the refurb the GPS works great.
I hate to report this because I wish it was true/worked but i just followed the instructions on my original phone but it is still sitting here 2 minutes (now 5) with no lock indoors.
I still don't believe the gps issue can be fixed with any software tweaks. The only way the gps finally started working on the original samsung galaxy s (after trying everything) was from a kernel fix. Once a dev fixed it, everyone's phone had great gps (which works better than the gs3 gps). Too bad JT1134 turned on some people's offer for a bounty phone to get him working on this.
Besides if this did fix the GPS wouldn't a factory reset fix the GPS?
I must be lucky but i have great GPS in stock based ROMS (not so good in AOSP). Get first lock in 2s and less then 4s max. Quickly get to 3 meters and fast lock in Google maps, Waze, etc... Can post some screens if need be.

what if you don't use google maps for GPS? (what if it's not installed in the 1st place?)
it seems like the fix is based on gmaps data?

I have to agree. Mine is the same. Get auto lock as soon as app is opened and shows me in this chair in front of my laptop. What we need to find out is how many this works for. So far by polling threads against posts in this thread it is about even for and against. It is early but you always have people on both sides and those that refuse to believe and think it is the devs fault. We supposedly have Verrizon/Samsung saying it's their fault and have to see where it goes. We have too many on different roms including stock unrooted that are having the same problem to tie it to the rom devs.

Android and Samsung/Verizon unless it is a dev phone did not not design the phone to be used without Google Maps. They have to have a reference for them to test and calibrate. Google Maps is a standard that most 3rd party apps work off. Just my thoughts and may be baseless but have to have a standard to calibrate to which is latitude and longitude. That being said without the maps you would not know if it was right or wrong. If their modem calibration is off it is off on all apps. The main thing is do you acheive lock on multiple satellites. Basically what I read on this fix is to turn off other radios and towers so GPS can get a fix without tower triangulation interference. Does it work. I have no idea since mine works fine. Is it worth a shot if you can't get a lock. I would think so.

Sign-in error for Google account

Starting today, my phone has been giving me notifications about a sign in error to my Google account. It's happened about 5 times so far, all just today. My phone is completely stock. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Are Google servers having some issues?
I think Google was having problems this morning. Maybe they still are.

Been getting that error like crazy today. I'm guessing it's cleared up though? Haven't seen it in a minute..
Just started getting it a few hours ago, completely stock.
I wonder if they're just making system wide changes in waves, you guys are getting the errors much later than me, I haven't gotten one in hours now
I am getting as well yesterday and today with 2 different ROMs so I believe its a Google issue
Confirming as well, just got one to be exact
I've been getting the log in error periodically for over a day now
It's been happening to me since last night, and I'm on a completely different phone. In searching for a solution that DIDN'T involve starting from scratch by reflashing a ROM (literally hours of work to retweak and restore everything, titanium backup and all) I found another thread regarding this issue on a totally different phone forum of xda.
I myself am running Now for ICS on my One S running Viper Rom. From this thread, with no details given I can only assume most of you are using Verizon galaxy S 3s?
But anyways. In the other thread it seemed the consensus that the issues were related to Google now. Some users reported some success from logging out of their Google plus then logging back in again. That resolution has provided me no dice so far.
Most users reporting the issue said that their google now was even not working at all. Have any of you tried google now while encountering these issues? Does it work or does it seem to be malfunctioning? Mine (along with the rest of my google apps) all seem to be working fine still. =L
Is anyone on here using a phone other than the Verizon GS3? what roms are involved? Anyone encountering this issue NOT have google now installed to their phone?
Hoping to narrow the details down in the interest of gaining a little more knowledge about this specific occurrence.
This happened to me a couple months ago, and I was running GNow for ICS back then too. Can't remember but I'm fairly certain the issue worked itself out. But its obnoxious ass all hell. Been getting the notification once every 5 minutes whenever I dismiss it, and its been prevalent since last night! It's starting to severely irritate me lol.

I'm on an HTC Amaze running a custom Speed Rom. My battery ran out during the error message and my phone wouldn't turn on again. Luckily I had a nandroid from earlier in the month, but I still lost 3 weeks of data on my phone, not the end of the world, but certainly a nuisance. I also recall having this happen a few months ago and the issue resolved itself so my guess is that it's an issue on Google's side. I am, however, disappointed that it's taking so long. A few hours is fine, but over a day and counting?
FIXED!!! (for me at least)

Tell me about it. Im seriously starting to lose my sanity over this.
A couple users said to disable Google Account manager (via settings > apps) as a temporary solution, but for me doing so disabled all of my g apps entirely so that's definitely not a good work around.
I spotted a thread in the amaze forum involving a speedrom issue (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1968141) and he seemed to think it was related to his Rom. Seemed that doing what he did resolved it, but given the prevalence of this issue accross as many devices as it has and as many roms as it has, I'm inclined to think that the issue coincidentally resolved itself while he was busy flashing lol
Regardless... I'm so desperate to stop being pestered by this issue that imma bout to wipe cache and dalvik cache and see I'd that doesn't fix the issue for me as well. I'll report back when I know one way or the other.
Edit - cache and dalvik cache wiped. Crossing my fingers. Only time will tell... Or not. Got the error whilst I was writing this paragraph lol. No dice
Edit 2 - interesting. I've had the sports card running for a couple days now. It kinda updated but didnt seem to be working 100%. Whether its related or not, im not sure but simultaneous to this behavior I noticed that the search function didn't work. Didn't open chrome up at all so I'd simply have to type my search into chrome directly. I just disabled the sports card and my search function is working again all of a sudden. Haven't gotten the error yet, if this pans out that might have been the source of my problem. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Edit 3 FIXED!!!!! (for me at least). It's now been an hour and 35 minutes since I disabled the sports card. My now search has been working for the first time in days since the instant I disabled it and the error free hour and 35 minutes is by far the longest span of time I've achieved in the last 24 hours (was getting the error within 5-10 minutes of each time I dismissed it previously). Anyone else encountering this issue have the Sports card enabled? Try it, see if it solves the issue for you as well and share with the class =)
Edit 4 - I guess it was a passing moment nonetheless. Got more errors.in the last 15 minutes after about 2 and 1/2 hours of not seeing it at all. Damn this is effing ridiculous

Yeah. I gave up on it last night and figure with it being as prevalent as it is, it absolutely has to be server related and can't be anything Rom/system related by any means. On a positive note Im pretty sure I havent seen it in 3-4 hours so maybe they've finally fixed it. This is day 3 for me so I sure hope they did

Ditto, it's been a couple of hours since I've received the error. I think we have it beat!

AGPS patch for galxy s3

I couldn't post this on the galaxy s3 agps fix thread so I thought I'd share it here. I tried the test3 alt zip on my galaxy s3 and OMG, the GPS performance on my unit is MINDBLOWING, absolutely RIDICULOUS!!!! I've had many problems with the gps on my galaxy s3 even in outdoor conditions. After applying this zip, I was also having some of the problems other people described such as having to wait 10-15 minutes after each phone reboot and then it would start getting better. But now that problem has disappeared also. Now i'm getting a lock under 5 seconds in indoor conditions (before this I couldn't even dream of catching 1-2 satellites indoors).
I'd really like to thank the person that came up with this patch, it's nothing short of genuis! Anyone who has a rooted galaxy s3 NEED to get this patch asap (it might be test 1 or test 1 for you)!
Yeah, the aGPS patch really does work wonders. I applied it the other day on CM10.1 and it gets me a lock in under 5 seconds, same experience as you report.
which patch are you guys running? i was looking through the agps patch thread and it seemed a bit confusing, there were a few different patches and you had to flash one patch and then edit some prop file? is there a newer fix out?

The OP in the thread you refer to is very confusing... which of the multitudes of patches did you use with success?

I'm using galaxy s3 test 3 alt zip (test 3 also worked me). Try all of them - chances are one of them will work for you, and when it works, you'll be surprised at how well it works. For test 3 alt fix, I had the problem of not getting a lock for 10-20 minutes after each reboot. I just stayed with it and it resolved itself plus the overall performance got much much better!
Simple mechanical GPS fix involving tightening the back frame of the phone
Hi,
I have a simple GPS fix that worked for me. I'd like to mention that the solution may not work for all but it did work for me after I tried just about every fix possible. For example I flashed back to stock, performed numerous battery pulls, used many of the AGPS patches, made numerous edits to the gps.conf file, reprovisioned my phone, checked different ROMs, uninstalled/reinstalled Google Maps, cleared data for Google Maps and Google Service Framework, and so on.
I tried all of the above methods because my GPS would take forever to get a fix both indoors and outdoors (I know it usually takes longer to get a fix indoors), wouldn't hold the fix while navigating and my GPS apps kept stating "Searching for GPS", would see 20+ satellites but would never lock on to them...man it was really frustrating. I just about gave up.
However, as I was trying to follow another procedure to fix my GPS which required me to pull my battery I noticed that when I removed my back cover that the back frame that has all the screws was slightly loose on the left side. Once I tightened them all up my GPS worked immediately! I've tested for a day and I consistently got a lock on the satellites in about 2-15 seconds depending on my location. My navigation also worked and wouldn't cut in and out.
Like I said it may not work for everyone but I would recommend that if you have a GS3 definitely check the back frame of your phone and make sure everything is secure. I've tried my GPS on the stock and CM 10 stable ROMs and I have achieved GPS locks consistently.
I hope this helps. Maybe this has already been shared but I figured I would post in case some of you haven't seen it yet.
Cheers.
That worked.

HHHAHAHAHAHAHA.... that was awesome! I have been wracking my brain for several days about how to fix the GPS or what was wrong.... and I was all about patching until I ran across this.
Biggest challenge with this fix...... finding the right sized screw driver.....
THANKS A BUNCH FOR THIS SIMPLE SIMPLE FIX. GPS is fast and accurate after tightening screws.

Awesome. I'm glad this fix is working for people. It should prevent people from sending in their phones for replacements.

[Q&A] CyanogenMod 11

Q&A for CyanogenMod 11
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for CyanogenMod 11. If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.
Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
Cyanogenmod 11 & GPS
I'm running the 20150125 nightly on my Relay, and like many, I've been having issues with GPS.
GPS was actually one of the first things I tested when I first installed CM11--I went for a walk and tracked my trip using My Tracks. When I got home, I looked at the route, and it looked great--tracked me down to at least a meter of accuracy. But then a few weeks later, I tried using Google Maps Navigation, and it did horribly--didn't appear to even *try* to get a GPS lock, instead relying on... what? Wi-Fi signal?
Then I tried using Google Maps while My Tracks was running, and it seems to do a lot better (I do need to do more testing, though). A further wrinkle, the GPS Status app shows plenty of satellites but never shows a location lock (even while My Tracks appears to have obtained one).
Does this constellation of observations make sense? It seems weird that My Tracks can convince GPS to lock while Navigation won't. And I don't know what to make of GPS Status. Let me know if screengrabs would help.

Sounds like you've run into the 'Privacy Bit' issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40976136&postcount=4
Has the solution.
Simple form:
Boot to recovery
Take a nandroid backup of your setup.
Flash old modem, and old CM10.1 beta build.
Boot into CM10.1.
Power down phone.
Pull the battery for a half a minute.
Boot into CM10.1.
Reboot into Recovery.
Flash latest modem.
Restore your backup.
Boot into system.
I would think more than likely, you could substitute an ICS Stock ROM for CM10.1 in this scenario.
Thanks. I've tried a variant of these directions but not these specifically. Still, though, isn't it strange that I can get a lock with My Tracks?
I installed lolipop flavored rom and the gps didnt work as well. So i got back to cm10.2.1 by wipe data / system / davlik / cache and gps working great again. No need to flash modem / battery pull.
Overheating
Been running CM11 nightlies for about two months now, and I've been occasionally experiencing issues with overheating that leads to the phone shutting itself off. This seems to happen most when I'm in a place with no/spotty reception (turning the phone to Airplane Mode seems to prevent it) or when tethering or using GPS navigation. It doesn't seem to happen more or less while plugged into charge. I will say that my phone would "run hot" even on stock, but not to the extent that it would power itself off.
I've tried underclocking the CPU, but that doesn't seem to have any effect.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also, my GPS issues seem to have entirely resolved on their own. Wish I could say what fixed it...

This feels more like a battery issue than fully an overheating issue. Try swapping to a different battery, and see if that resolves these issues.

Thanks for the reply, but I've already tried swapping batteries, and it does this with both (one more than the other). Both are OEM, but I'm willing to entertain the possibility that both are bad (I think both are more than a year old).
The chance that both are bad is possible -- I've had two relay batteries fail the same day myself. Also, the fact that you say the problem is exacerbated on one battery over another is kind of telling.
