Hey all , hope u rocking with your tabs.
anyway, I decided to move on and divorce my stock rom forever
I just would like to ask about a few little things before i get starting flashing.
1 - can i flash Panaroid(Cauz it's awesome and very fast software cycle) with the stock CWM?
2 - if i decided to return back to stock ICS, i will have to wipe data then and would that make me vulnerable to the famous brick bug?
3 - how to backup my stock rom just in case?
4 - what's the biggest sacrifices i will make due to this migration?
well, 2 days now and no one answers these questions :S
Well I have Paranoid installed and its perfect. I backed up my stock ICS and I have a backup. That's all.

Hi I am newbie as well. Still see and learn from this great helpful website. I would like to share my experience to play around with custom ROM. and so far still safe. These steps are from what I have done although I have not used the wonderful [ROM][JB : 4.1.2][CM10 Hybrid][P6800\P6810\i815] Paranoid Android v2.22 [17/10][WIP], I am still waiting for the nearly perfect of this rom. .
I am still satisfied with [ROM] Singha ROM Version 1.1.1 (SEP 26 2012). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886370

I just would like to ask about a few little things before i get starting flashing.
1 - can i flash Panaroid(Cauz it's awesome and very fast software cycle) with the stock CWM? It is better using CWM instead of Stock recovery. I am using old version Locerra's recovery at this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1542897&page=13. Works perfect so far.
2 - if i decided to return back to stock ICS, i will have to wipe data then and would that make me vulnerable to the famous brick bug? if you have downloaded stock ICS thenI would suggest using CWM when you are installing from zip file. So far I did the bellow steps if using CWM :
1) place on internal SD
2) reboot to CWM
3) wipe data/factory reset in CWM
4) wipe cache
5) advanced > wipe dalvik, wipe battery stats
6) install .zip from INTERNAL SD
7) reboot
Another method is using mobile odin or PC Odin to flash with Stock ICS. You can see at this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1469635
3 - how to backup my stock rom just in case? You have to install CWM Recoverry. TWRP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809295 or Locerras' recoverry
4 - what's the biggest sacrifices i will make due to this migration? see The OP updated log. It is nearly perfect and there is still bug. But it depends on individual's opinion.

6. so far, everything's good.

You can stay on stock rom while you are rooted. You can google it. I got my 2.3.4 from ardoid.com
Its a stock rom with added arabic support. Since you dont need arabic. It wont make any difference to you.

Flash ROM
Flash KERNEL (ONLY IF YOUR ON GINGERBREAD)
Reboot- FIRST boot will take up to 5mins to start.
If you have any trouble with your home button not working or reboot/shutdown hangs, just pull battery and reboot.
If for any reason, you have trouble ROGERS or Gingerbread users, Repeat the install process 3 times. Sometimes the kernel doesnt want to flash with this ROM and its the main reason why there has been so many problems.

I hazard a guess that its about the same. You are clicking 4 times with your way and 2 times with mine. I wipe dalvik first and then run darkside. Its pretty damn fast way to wipe phone. I will stick with it. Worked great when installing this.

I tried that on stock ics as its indicated that it can be applied. I borked the hell out of my phone lol. No nandroid so it was a fresh install to recover. I have since done nandroids and titbu's to avoid fresh installs.
Ok so i am back from work i have found a couple of issues i cannot restart the phone with quick reboot it just hangs and its a little laggy (i am guessing because of TW) and the camera seems to hang for a half a second not sure if this is normal as it did it on the nandroid back up as well

Flashing from GB DID NOT work for me. It installed, but kept freezing at the boot screen then would shut off.
I rooted my S3. I have not unlocked it.
I would like to backup the android operating system, the apps, and the data before I allow the recent OTA update.
Based on my research, I believe I can use titanium to backup everything except the operating system. How do I backup the operating system?
I tried the Volume Up/Power/Home Button restart. It gives me the option to restore but not to backup.
What am I missing??

Thank you for the speedy reply. I did a quick search and found quite a bit written on installing a custom recovery including on the S3.
It appears that I can only back up to a custom ROM such as ClockworkMod Recovery or TWRP Recovery and not the base ROM as it is on the phone now. Is that correct?
I have ROM manager on the phone so I expect the ClockworkMod Recovery would be the way to go.
Nope, CWM and TWRP are custom recoveries. You'll have to install one of those in order to backup. Go onto the app store and search for EZ Recovery. Use that app to install the recoveries(it's the easiest way for someone new). Then you just boot into your recovery and do a backup of your current setup.
Download EZ Recovery and flash CWM then boot into recovery and choose the backup option.

Custom recovery will backup stock rom. You will not be able to install any OTA until untill you Odin back to stock.
Thank you for the replies.
I guess I should have included in the initial post that all I have done is root the phone......I think.
I never unlocked the phone with Ez-Unlocker
I never used Rom-Manager either.
I did install SD Speed Increase and increased the SD cache size from 128kb to 1024 kb.
Thats it.
Does this information change the previous recommendations?
No, just install EZ Recovery and follow the directions listed in one of the guides in the stickies.

Yes, if you have a custom recovery you cannot accept an OTA. The install will fail. You will have to Odin back to stock in order to take the OTA.

Thank you for the input.
There is a lot of information on this topic but its not easy to determine which of it applies to my situation. I feel pretty good about being able to Odin back to stock but I'm not sure I want to take the risk of doing that (probably not much risk) just to get the latest update.
I expect the best thing for me to do is decide to either 1) go ahead and install CM10 (I think that's the one I would want) or 2) go back to stock and stick with the Verizon software. I'd like to get Jelly Bean now, but I'm not sure its worth the risk. We'll see.
Thanks again!
If u use ez recovery and flash back the stock recovery u can then accept the ota just fine. As long as u haven't messed with any system files you are good. Then just re root it once ota is done.

Thanks for the info.
I have installed EZRecovery and it seems pretty straightforward. I'm still trying to decide if I want to go for a Jelly Bean ROM now or just wait.
I'll just keep reading until I'm comfortable that first, Jelly Bean will give me improvements worth the risk, and second, I won't brick the phone.
I have been fooling with computers since the 70s but Android is somewhat different and it will take a while to learn something about the architecture.
Thanks again.

If new I would flash an ICS rom first and get you a stable daily driver setup and backed up. Regardless of what you read all JB builds are buggy to an extent since they are all ports. The advantage of Android is as long as you have a stable Nandroid you can experiment with more advanced ports. Backup IEMI also and be careful jumping back and forth between AOSP and TW based roms. This is where the most problems come up. From what I've seen if flashed AOSP base it is best to Odin back to stock before going back to Touchwiz.

Or Twrp
I prefer twrp as it will allow you to name the backup from within recovery as well as some things cwm doesnt do.
Man, I must have some serious derpage going on here, but I cannot get CM10 onto my Skyrocket. I don't consider myself a noob -- been doing this for a few years now -- but this one has me stymied.
My phone is fine in CM9.1.0. When I try to load CM10, following TeamChopsticks CM10 Install Guide I start boot looping. I've gone as far as to wipe everything I can think of (wipe data/factory reset, cache, dalvik, format/data, format/system, format/cache all x3) with no joy. When booting, I get Samsung logo, 60 seconds of CM10 spinning boot animation, freeze and then re-boot.
I'm running sk8erwitskil's 6.0.1.5 CWM Touch Recovery.
Heimdall fails with "libusr error: -12" and I've been unable to resolve that on my local PC.
Download mode says:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SGH-I727
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: NO
CURRENT BINARY: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL...dunno if that's right, wrong or indifferent.
As such, I appeal to all you people out there much smarter than I. What else should I do? What else can I check? There must be something fundamentaly wrong with the config of my phone as I know there's a lot of folks out there on Skyrockets with CM10. I'd appreciate any and all help.

Bob

Well, then we are definitely entering the NOOB zone. My sense is that "Here be dragons..."
While the procedure seems easy enough -- thanks to k0nane -- I have several questions.
Will I loose root? (I'm assuming that's a given...)
Do I need to be concerned about the /efs directory?
I'm using my Skyrocket on T-Mobile. Will I lose the unlock?
What else do I need to be aware above before jumping off this cliff?
TIA,
Bob

My skyrocket was doing the exact same thing. After installing the CM9.1 rom, phone went into boot loop with the same symptoms. After about 10 tries to reboot, I had to flash back to the stock ICS. When that got up and runnung I installed CWM, rooted, then installed Dark_pa ROM. Everything has been running nice and smooth since.
Verify the MD5 hash of the ROM zip file on phone before installing, i had similar problems and it turned out that the file was not being copied to phone properly. Some strange issues and MD5 of the file is always different on the phone.
You can either download MD5 checker from Play store or if you have File Manager, it will show MD5 of the file in File Details.
OR
If you have an external SD card, you can try copying the ROM to SD card using SD CARD adapter.

Root isn't required to flash roms, and I would personally stay away from super one click to root the phone, as our phones are super easy to root, just use the flashable su file from the root sticky, it takes 3sec's and its impossible to muck up or brick the phone

I currently have CM9 installed on my SGS4G and it's been over a year since I had it and wanted to try something new. After browsing in the dev forum, I decided to try out the SlimBean 4.2.2.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2233640
I was wondering will my phone be able to handle it? Its still on ICS 4.0.4. The first instruction says to factory reset/wipe my phone but I don't really want to erase everything. Can I just download the SlimBean rom and flash it while on my CM9? Will it change my ROM to SlimBean or will something really bad happen.

That would be what's called a dirty
flash only used if you are upgradeing your current ROM..
You will have all kinds of problems dirty flashing jellybean from ICS..
Back up your app data with Titanuim Backup and try restoring app data 1 by 1..But don't dirty flash JB from ICS follow the OP's flashing
Instructions.

If I do the factory reset like the instructions then I would have to re-root and reinstall ClockworkRecovery right?

No you would not..just follow the
Op's flashing instructions and you will be fine..
I always...
1.Backup data
2.Factory reset
3.wipe system
4.wipe dalvik
5.Flash new ROM
6.flash gapps if needed
7.reboot
I have never had a problem..
You will still be rooted and have
A custom recovery...
