I've got an unlocked One X, running on a Telstra contract (in Australia). I bought the phone from Mobicity.com.au a few months back, and have always had problems with the OTA updates. In short, they don't work: it's still running Android 4.0.3. Every now and then I get the notification to tell me that a new update is available from HTC, but installing it simply causes the phone to reboot into "ClockworkMod Recovery v5.8.3.1" with an error with something about an "unknown volume for path [INTERNALSDCARD:<complicated-update-name.zip>]" and that it "can't mount" said file; causing the installation to abort.
Now, to be honest, I don't really understand what ClockworkMod Recovery is or what it does. If this mod is there for whatever purpose, I did not install it. Does HTC install it by default? Is it something Mobicity installs? I'd expect the updates to just, you know, work.
I'm really quite a noob when it comes to this stuff. I've done some searching and people have suggested rerooting and installing a custom ROM... I'm sure this will get around the need for solving this problem, but I'd rather be able to stick with the default ROM if it is at all possible. Is there a way to manually install the updates using a PC? Or is a custom ROM really the best and most reliable option?

Clockworkmod (CWM) is a custom recovery. Its not installed by HTC. Its usually installed by the user, but in this case it looks like Mobicity installed it. Not familiar with them, and I'm from the US, so I'm not sure if this is what they do normally.
What do you mean by "unlocked"? Was it sold SIM unlocked or bootloader unlocked? If you haven't modded the phone, it appears to be bootloader unlocked, and custom recovery installed by Mobicity. May be rooted as well. If sold as rooted, they would have had to unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery to do that.
Long story short, stock recovery is needed for OTA. You would have to return to a more stock condition to be able to get OTAs (I believe relock the bootloader and RUU back to stock recovery). But that would be a step backwards IMO. What you have is better than stock. You have the bootloader unlocked already, so you can install custom ROMs and other mods. You can also install newer firmware versions which are pre-rooted, and can be flashed from custom recovery. My advice would be start reading and learning what all this means, then decide what you want. My recommendation would be to change CWM to TWRP, which is just a different custom recovery. TWRP officially supports our phone, while CWM is just a port, and has known issues. Then install whatever updated pre-rooted firmware or custom ROMs you want from Development. But read up, and make the decision for yourself.
I also bought my phone from Mobicity. They state their phones are brand new. They source them from Asia, Hong Kong to be exact. There absolutely should not be a custom recovery installed on your device mate, it's been tinkered with, probably not a new handset unfortunately.

Hi guys,
There are threads on this and I have taken a look. Most solutions to this issue (apparently a radio file that is incompatible with certain devices rolled out with the 2.3.6 update) require a flash (radio, rom etc.).
My phone is unrooted and since I still have the return policy, I don't want to disrupt too much and spend too much time rooting/unrooting just to get it to work.
I'd like to try either a radio flash or a full wipe back to 2.3.5 or 2.3.4 in order to see if this is actually a hardware defect, or a software issue as above.
Can anyone advise on whether or not it will be possible to do a full wipe back to 2.3.5 or earlier without having a rooted phone?
I tried the other thread on flashing the radio but I believe it is not possible without root access.
I apologize for the noob thread, but I could not find an answer to this problem specifically for those with unrooted phones..

Hi there,
There's no way to return to an older version with stock recovery. You would need to root and install a custom recovery. Then you will be able to rollback to the older version of the update.
Since you don't want to do that, the only option is to return the device and get another.
Root is extremelly easy with SuperOneClickRoot (just in case you're afraid of loose too much time on this).

I was following a guid eon nexus hacks for rooting and the process seems relatively quick and painless... would I need superuser installed if all I'm doing is the recovery tools for now?
Its not the rooting part I'm worried with, or the unrooting as there's guides for those (and its quite a simple process) its just the possibility of something messing up along the way
Actually the fastboot unlock and recovery install is pretty painless. Just make sure you have the correct custom recovery for your phone model.
You don't need superuser if you're just running the recovery and have all the roms you will need in you phone's "sdcard"
Fair, I guess if all I'm doing is unlocking fastboot and then am able to "relock" it, it is relatively painless.
This might be a very stupid question and it is a bit OT but since you're active in this thread for the moment, customer recovery... I am a bit at a loss on how to retrieve that from? I was merely hoping that by unlocking fast boot, I can just "flash" in a radio file, but I assume I should backup those radio files first...
You are correct. Just flash the correct radio and you're good to go.

I have not rooted an htc one x because I'm afraid of losing some of the functions the stock rom has, So my question to you guys is, Can I restore this back to stock rom? I'm confused when he said he rooted it with stock rom.. and what is team win custom recovery? If I just wanted to restore the htc one x to its original factory state is that possible?
Its possible but the warranty on the phone is void as the bootloader is surely unlocked and will show relocked if you restore it. And restoring it could prove to be somewhat of a task as you'll need to determine the ruu for that phone.. What carrier did he purchase the phone from? There's a chance the Cid of the phone has been changed so you may have to change the Cid back before running an ruu. The rom he has loaded is probably the stock rom with root so I don't see any reason for it to run any differently.

what @exad said, plus there are a number of rooted stock roms available that are, well, stock, so I wouldn't worry too much about losing any features.
'Team Win custom recovery' is just a recovery 'program' you can use to flash custom roms and enhancements.

I thought if you purchase the phone from someone else the warranty is automatically void hence you're not the original owner. He purchased it from at&t, and as for the rooting, if it is indeed rooted with stock rom and no functions of the stock rom are lost,What's the purpose of stock rom with root? I thought the whole point of rooting your phone was so you get custom roms, but than again I'm no expert

Having root allows you to make changes to the system partition. Basically you can have the stock Rom but get rid of all the bloat and extra apps that AT&T includes which would otherwise be permanent

What functions? Root is only a change in permissions. It gives you access to the system files, that are normally not accessible. Root doesn't take away any functions.
Only exceptions, is that you sometimes can't get OTA firmware updates if you are rooted. Or installing them may result in the phone not booting properly. For most folks on here, this isn't a factor, since people what mod their phones and install custom ROMs typically don't want the OTAs anyway. Also, I think movies purchased from the Play store might not work if you are rooted. But I never buy/watch those, so I might not have the latest info there.
Now in your case, if you want to keep the phone bone stock, and still get OTA updates, you might just look for another purchase. Yes, the phone can be returned to near stock condition. But it requires you learning some things you don't already know:
- Download and install fastboot files
- Install HTC drivers or HTC sync (if not already installed)
- Use fastboot to relock the bootloader
- Download and run the appropriate RUU (ROM Update Utility) which will return your phone to near stock condition
If you are willing and interested in learning a few things about how the phone works, then it might still be a good purchase. Otherwise, if you just want to get a stock phone, and not have to mess with it, you might just look at buying elsewhere. There should be plenty of other decent options for unrooted One X phones.
Also note that I say the phone can be restored to "near" stock. The bootloader will only say RELOCKED, instead of LOCKED. Once the bootloader is unlocked, it can't be changed back to LOCKED, only RELOCKED. And this may have warranty implications.
OK, so I've got a totally stock ROM and I've unlocked the bootloader, put TWRP custom recovery on and rooted mt Nexus 5 and all is going well.
The only thing is I know there is at least one OTA update and because of the changes I've made I cannot get them.
Try as I might, I cannot find anywhere to download the OTAs and flash them manually. I have seen this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47128349&posted=1#post47128349 which says it lists the updates available but it makes no mention of which one I need or if I need both of them or which order to do them in if I need to install them all.
Can anyone help? I've been doing this since Eclair and have installed many custom ROMS on many different phones but this is the first time I've come up against something I need some help with.
If someone can point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful.

Hey everyone. I was wondering if some here with a HTC One can point me in the right direction. I am looking to finally take the plunge and permanently root, flash a custom recovery, backup my stock, and install a new custom rom on my Verizon M8.
This is my first HTC device playing with, I have always had Motorola stuff and am pretty familiar with the process on those, but this HTC stuff is still a little blurry. S-on/off, CID, MID, RUUs????
I have been reading these forums for quite a bit and still a little unsure about what the steps would have to be. I am currently on the latest stock VZW temp rooted with the new weeksauce basically just to have tethering via a 3rd party app (Wifi tether router). I actually really, really like the stock Sense 6.0 UI and this phone is pretty much perfect all around.
What I want to do is, permanently root, install TWRP as that's what i've used on Moto and my Sammy Tab, backup my stock system so I can go back, and then install a custom ROM. Can TWRP on this do more than one ROM slot and run dual roms? What if everything gets jacked up and I have to go back to complete out of the box stock? How is that done with HTC? I think with Moto it was like an .FXZ file or something like that and you boot the phone into download mode and just flash that file from the computer and you're back to 100% stock. Same with Samsung using ODIN.
I'm also not sure what ROM I want to try, so I am open to suggestions there too. I would like to maybe try a pretty clean Lollipop ROM with good battery life and very stable. Would that be the GPE?

First you need s-off/unlocked boot loader to perma root..also there is multi ROM support for this device. An if you want to return to pure stock cause something got messed up then you download the ruu an use fast boot via pc to flash your ruu.zip it will wipe your whole phone an return you to out of the box. if your looking for a sense Lollipop from. Santod has a nice ROM an you can also check out the ROM by andybones is also runs very nice an has themes an mod support. If you like GPE then there is one of those also for our device.

And also, as I understand it, the Sunshine method of achieving the two may or may not work on 4.4.4 either, kind of a 50/50 shot??? So I guess at this time it might just be worth it to wait until either the new sunshine is released or Verizon pushed the 5.0 update out and see what that is like.

Firewater is dead....sunshine might work you can download the app for free an run it to see if it will work with your device is free too. Then if you want to run sunshine that's when you pay the 25...so I would advice against taking anymore ota till you r able to s-off.
So as the title says, I recently sunshine unlocked my 4.2.2 (12.15.15 firmware) MAXX. At this point, I have a custom recovery from the root method I used on the phone a year ago, but other than that I'm just running the stock 4.2.2 Camera update.
What is the easiest way to get up and running on a current 4.4.4 build? Can I use RSDlite to return to stock 4.2.2, or does that not work with an unlocked bootloader? Could I RSDlite to 4.4.4 directly? What about flashing TWRP to my phone now and using that to flash a 4.4.4 rom? I dont care about losing all of my data or anything like that.
I'm a little confused on what I can and can't flash depending on the current version of andoid I'm on, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
now that your bootloader is unlocked you can have root on any fw version you decide to update to. but you have to be on stock everything before you update to 4.4.4. if the recovery is the only thing you have changed you can just extract it from the fxz for 4.2.2 if that's what your on right now. flash it using fastboot or the easy way using rashr an app from play store. my fav for flashing recoveries. then take the update. after that you can flash T.W.R.P 2.8.4.0 for obake. then reboot to recovery. reboot to system to gain root if it is removed by updating
Thanks for the reply. I'll look into flashing that recovery and try the OTA. Would flashing the whole fxz (which i believe includes a bootlader) hurt me? Also, is there any way one of the OTA's changes the bootloader in a way that could mess up my unlock?
no. once your bootloader is unlocked then it won't relock unless you lock it by command prompt. yes you could use rsd to go back to stock. it has to be the exact version you are currently on. if you try to rsd a version your not on it will fail.
Will it fail in a "your phone is bricked" kind of way or an error message telling you it wont flash?
it will error telling it was aborted. i have done it once that's all it took for me to realise it needed the exact version. i was lucky to have the right one handy

I'm in the same boat and going to do this tonight on my wife's phone.
She's currently on 4.2.2, bootloader is unlocked, rooted, and currently has TWRP installed.
If I'm correct, I need to
1. Flash stock recovery
2. Boot up and take the OTAs
then
3. Flash the latest TWRP
4. Use TWRP to re-root
4. Then I can flash a 4.4.4 rom, such as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2716824
Is that correct?
As long as my bootloader is unlocked, can I still regain root with the latest OTA?

Honestly, I doubt you have waited this long, but if you have, here is what I am gathering from your question... You want to run 4.4.4 roms instead of 4.2? While on 4.2.2 (if you still are) you can run OSE, AOSB, CM11, and pretty much any 4.4.4 custom rom. (though i can't get cm12 to work on a mini (same software/bootloader/recovery for the most part) on 19.6.3 so that may be out) The only reason you would have to update would be to be on stock 4.4.4. I haven't read up too much on the new OTA's, but I can say this, YOU CAN NEVER GO BACK TO WHAT YOU ARE ON ONCE YOU UPGRADE STOCK. this may not be a big deal for you, but personally, I liked the JB software the best (specifically 12.7.7 that my DEV MAXX came with) I haven't heard anyone say anything positive (really) about VOLTE or any new features, and honestly, not being able to go back on a DEV EDITION sucks. On a side note, I recently bought a Mini (bc my charge port on my DEV maxx crapped out and Moto doesn't have any more, so i am in phone purgatory waiting for *something* but pretty much anyone I have talked to is useless.) I just fxz'd back to 19.5.3 from 19.6.3, but I cannot go backwards any further *completely* @NWKENT has done it numerous times as best as it *can* be done. also, @NWKENT can confirm you absolutely cannot go back from 4.4.4 to an earlier edition. I hope this helps if you haven't upgraded yet. If you have, for most intents and purposes, you haven't really lost anything.
