[NFC UPDATE] [App] Fast File Transfer - The WiFi Direct For The Rest Of Us - Android Apps and Games

Fast File Transfer is a free Android app that uses WiFi tethering for file transfers between two devices.
This technology allows for speeds of more than 32 Mbit/s, which means e.g. 1 Gigabyte in under 5 minutes.
NEW VERSION 2.0 12/12/2014
I'm proud to announce the release of Version 2.0, a complete rewrite with tons of new features.
I've opened a new thread specifically dealing with the new version here.
NEW VERSION 1.2 03/02/2013
Finally, the app allows pairing via NFC and more:
NFC (Beta)
NFC can now be used for connecting to the WiFi and opening FFT'S web address
You will have to install an app like WiFiTap on the receipient's device for connecting to the WiFi via NFC.
Please note that WiFiTap only connects to a WiFi that not already known.
NFC pairing is in BETA state currently. Send me an email if you experience problems.
New notifications that display progress, file size, current transfer speed and estimated transfer time
Hints for QR code and NFC
Added support for Android 2.2 (Tested on ZTE Blade)
Now continues sending when device's screen is turned off or the app is closed to background
Loads of bug fixes:
Error message on devices where the app could not get an IP
Multiple files should now work
Should now correctly restore WiFi Tethering
Menu works for devices without HW menu button
Progress correctly shown for files bigger than 4GB
Features:
Up to 20x speed of bluetooth
The receiver is device-independent
No need for a common Wi-Fi connection
No data usage for file transfers
The receiver does not have to have the app installed
Send single or multiple files
Easy to setup:
Use QR codes to allow the receiver to easily connect to the wifi and open the receiving URL
Facts:
Fast File Transfer
Developer: Florian Draschbacher
Price: Free
Platform: Android 2.2 and higher
Play Store Link:
http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.floriandraschbacher.fastfiletransfer
PLEASE NOTE:
The app does not work on:
Motorola Razr devices (Restarts phone; Problem in Motorola's Android implementation)
Most HTC One devices
HTC EVO devices
Some Galaxy Y devices
Devices that don't have a WiFi Tethering setting, such as the Nexus 7
These problems on specific devices are caused by restrictions and changes of manufacturers or carriers that make it impossible for the app to access WiFi tethering. Please don't write bad reviews mentioning the app does not work on a device listed above.
Please feel free to ask questions or make suggestions for future updates!

Great App, is there any way to use it without it messing up my wifi hotspot settings (the restore option doesn't work).

Thankes , plan to give her a whirl moving some files around

Sorry for this late response and for the bug, but there's good news:
This will be fixed in the next update I'm currently working on.

have been using it since few days
good one

Lovely App! Particularly useful for Nexus 4 owners!
Hi Florian,
Really like your app - it has a particular attraction to owners of the Nexus 4 (with it's somewhat limited storage capacity)
I've just posted about it over at modaco though unfortunately I can't post the link here due to XDA's posting restrictions.
Hopefully this will spark a bit more (much deserved) interest
Great work!

As mentioned in the app description on Google Play, the app does not work on Motorola's Razr devices. Sorry for that. It seems Motorola have a major bug somewhere in their WiFiManager implementation.

Excellent app
Works fine on Samsung Galaxy SL (GT-I9003) running stock 2.3.6 GB. Getting speeds in excess of 1600 kbyte/s.
Requests to dev:
1. Show file size, speed, estimated time remaining during transfer.
2. Include a "cancel" button.
3. Enable batch transfers (queuing multiple file transfers).
4. Include a notification in the pull down menu with details of the transfer.
5. Consider implementing it like Bluetooth file transfer. The app must be installed on both devices. Pair/authenticate the devices, then select the file and the receiver device. Transfer will start immediately. The app running in background in the receiver device will detect the incoming file(s) and transfer them, without user intervention. Of course, include an option to "ask always". For non-Android devices, there's web based transfer/QR code.
Thanks a lot!

You can already send multiple files:
Just select multiple files in your file explorer before sending them.

I'm planning to include a receiving part right within the app, where you would only have to enter Name and PW of the sender once and can receive with one click later.

Developing an app that allows transfers to any WiFi device was one of my original goals, so of course I will always keep a way to receive without any special app. The receiving part I mentioned would just connect to the WiFi for you and open the web browser automatically.
BTW, some One V users report that the app does not work for them. Does it work on your One V? If so, which ROM are you running?

AW: [App] Fast File Transfer - The WiFi Direct For The Rest Of Us
Just discovered your app and have to say it's brilliant. I've always been searching for an app allowing me to send files via wifi between to devices using the Hotspot functionality. You just made my day the only thing that could improve your app is a holo design and the already mentioned nfc feature

okay. so what do you actually mean with "sync"? Just pair it or what?
Because i did pair my netbook and my U20i, then pressed on my netbook on the list of the paired devices, which then resulted in the "error connecting".
works on LG GT540 but some bugs :
1-very slow response (writes the letter after 2-5 seconds) also when using backspace the box on pc is empty but letters are still there in phone
2-After I change to another application it just write random letters of word e.g (If I write Market it write on phone "Ma" or "rk" etc...
3-After a while of using I get this error on pc

The slow response is normal behaviour, i need to find a better way to writing, also, for delete all characters you need to press back space, multiple times (not just hold pressed), ill work on that too.
and the error maybe because you are using non allowed characters like ¡ or ?, wich android input keyevent and input text does not recognize. The random letters is weird, could i get a video on that? thanks.
btw, I can do software as fast as real time, but it will lost ability to write outside activity, and over any application

I really liked the concept, I can't test it because I dont have Bluetooth on my laptop, I think it would be awsome if you could implement an Wifi solution.. (like Winamp syncs when the phone is on the same network as the phone)..

+1 on the Wifi or even via abd/usb. I have been using wifikeyboard with a small c# frontend to the webbrowser needed and that works pretty well, except for causing lists not to scroll correctly at times. Having something else which would work better is always something cool. Great job

getting an error connection im guessings its down to my bluetooth damn you windows 7, well at least thats what im guessing since i hate how w7 manages the bluetooth
Use Case
I have a pretty good use case for this app. In companies, where access to Chat apps such as Gtalk is blocked, you could use this app message with your friends via Gtalk on the phone. Your PC will still be on the company network and you'll chat on your data connection. You'd need to mount the phone next to your PC monitor, where u can see the screen while working.
And then, you can chat away and somebody from far will only think that you are doing your regular work on your PC
I haven't yet tried out the app, so I'm not sure if this is totally supported. Hope it is
Can you please add WiFi compatibility?
I don't use windows

[APP][2.2+] Super Download 1.5 - Wifi + Mobile, like Download Booster [2013-08-21]

WARNING: Some features require a rooted device.
SEE THE FAQ IN POST 2 (BELOW) IF YOU HAVE ISSUES
DESCRIPTION:
Download web files much faster by using wifi and mobile data at the same time!
Share or open a link from any program, like the web browser, and download it at speeds up to two times faster than usual.
This is the only tool that can download using wifi and mobile data connection simultaneously*!
*In 2014, two years later, Samsung released the Galaxy S5 phone which incorporates a similar feature called "Download Booster".
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- Using both networks together requires root access.
- Since this program uses mobile data connection, by using it you may incur in additional charges from your network operator.
- To unleash its full potential, this program needs good (and balanced) wifi and mobile reception/bandwidth.
- Using both connections is not supported on all devices / rom combinations.
- Some web servers may provide insufficient functionalities on the requested files.
- Currently only http and https protocols are supported (no ftp or torrent yet)
- The Lite version has a filesize limit of 50 megabytes.
SPECIAL NOTE FOR XDA DEVELOPERS:
This program is free for xda users if downloaded from this thread, but is a paid application on play store. If you want to support the development, buy it from the market and get automatic updates.
USAGE:
Just click on a link or open a remote file: if the file type is recognised by Super Download, it will start getting it.
If this method doesn't work, try click-and-hold on the link, select "share with" and choose Super Download.
Finally, you can copy and paste a url in the "add url" dialog.
There is a thread on Super Download and a youtube video here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc...xy-s5s-download-booster-t2829885/post54435368
PLANNED FEATURES:
- Multiple files together / download queue
- Other ways of speeding up downloads
MARKET LINKS:
- Full version: Super Download Full
- Lite version: Super Download Lite
***** FAQ *****
1 - Q: It doesn't work!
A: Please provide more information and possibly a logcat (main buffer, debug level).
2 - Q: The application doesn't trigger! Is my browser supported?
A: Did you try both methods (read USAGE on post 1)? Some browser do not support the first method (mostrly third party browsers), some do not support the second (only ICS stock browser doesn't, AFAIK). If both methods do not work for you, please post your browser and rom names and versions in this thread, thanks!
3 - Q: It fails and now I can't download the file without unistalling your app! Now what?
A: From SuperDownload, click on the download and select "send to default downloader": the android download app will start to download your file (not available on froyo). Or, some browsers support long-tap on a link and then "download". You can also install an additional download with different features, so android will ask you which one to use at download time.
4 - Q: When using both networks, mobile data stream gets interrupted often!
A: Unfortunately, when using both network, the system enforces periodic disconnects on the mobile interface. There is no way to avoid them, but the app tries to mitigate its effect as much as possible.
5 - Q: How can I download from RapidShare (HotFile, etc.) with this application?
A: Sites like rapidshare do not support multi threaded clients. They don't want you to have more than one active download at a time. So it would defeat the purpose of this application.
It is possible that, with some tweaks specific to the site, and maybe the need of a premium account, it would work. That would need a lot of time to develop, though :-\
6 - Q: Sometimes I see "Dual networks" changing form "enabled" to "suspended", why?
A: From version 0.4, Super Download tries to avoid using both networks together when one of the two is failing too often; this is to avoid slowing down the transfer when in bad mobile reception, for example. If you feel it is suspended too often or when it shouldn't, please report on this thread.
7 - Q: Does it work for downloading [put your favorite big file here]?
A: It should work as long as it's a valid http or https url (no torrent (yet), for example) and the web server doesn't limit multiple connections.
8 - Q: Does it work on a tethered connection?
A: I didn't try myself, but I got some reports that it works. The tethered connection works as if it were wifi, and you can add your mobile speed to it!
9 - Q: Why doesn't it work for downloading from the market/play store?
Q: Why don't you just replace the default android downloader?
A: The default downloader is not a "normal" application, it's a core part of the android system and libraries. Even if it was possible to take its place, it would be a compatibility nightmare, with all the os versions and different carrier/manufacturer customizations that are available.
10 - Q: Why can't you do the same system wide, for all the applications?
A: That would need to modify android internals and probably every application that needs it. Currently Super Download merges the packages from the two connections at the application level and there is no simple way (that I know of) to do it differently.
11 - Q: On my Samsung with original firmware and touchwiz I can't see the download history, even though I'm on later than froyo!
A: That's because samsung has taken their froyo downloader and put it on gb, ics and later, without updating the downloader api. You know, it's easier to make a customized program work on a new version of android rather than re-applying the changes to a newer version of the downloader...
12 - Q: Can you alter the app and allow it to do tethering also? I want to create a wifi network which combines two 3g networks and doubles the speed for the user.
A: I'm sorry but Super Download can't do this. The problem is not just enabling the interfaces (you can get some clues on how to do this on this thread, without the need for SD altogether), but combining the packets from the two channels. As far as I know, this can easily be done only at the application level; what this means is that you would need to modify the programs you are using on the client in order to make it work. An exception would be the use of proxies: most networked applications already support this, so theoretically it's possible. But currently a bit off topic for this project, unless it can grow to a much bigger application than it is now. It is in my todo list for the future, nonetheless
13 - Q: Did you copy/reverse engineer Samsung Download Booster?
A: NO. It's the other way around. My app was out a lot earlier. Super Download is, infact, the first application of its kind.
14 - Q: How's your app different than Download Booster?
A: Samsung's one is integrated into the rom, so it has a more low-level access to the protocol. This enables it to work on, for example, play store downloads, which Super Download can't. Still, none of the two can work on all the network traffic: they are both limited to the HTTP protocol and supported applications.
Does it work for you guys?
Is it actually faster than wifi only?
Please let me know

Could you please try with another file type and/or another website?

So it looks like this is a replacement for the "Downloads" app that is already on the phone. It handles the download well, though I can't see much of a difference downloading as the server I am downloading from is the limiting factor, not my wifi. Here are some observations:
We should test this on starbucks or other limited wifi
The app did not ask for root privileges
It does not seem to route all traffic through the dual mode, only some file downloads. Am I missing something there?
All in all though, it is a cool experiment, I look forward to do some more testing with it.
I really don't think this makes a difference.

Thanks for your testing.
There are many factors affecting performance.
One is what you already said that often the bottleneck is the server itself, not the local network.
Add to this the fact that, when dual mode is disabled, the thread which should download using mobile is routed thru wifi, and you may get the file faster by using wifi only.
Moreover, android automatically puts the mobile connection down after some time when wifi is in use, leading to timeouts and needs to wait for reconnection.
All this can be mitigated, fixed etc. Just let me tweak it further and please continue reporting! More feedback, more fixes
Here is the new version:
0.2
- aggressive threading option added, should greatly improve speed on some servers
- network and layout tweaks
- timing display
- fixed FC when no wifi and both networks enabled
I'm getting terrific performance improvements with aggressive threading and some "lazy" servers!
So please have a look at this new version and let me know

[WIFI Tether] [TMOUS] Work Around - No Root Needed

Do you have a T-Mobile US device that redirects you to T-Mo's site whenever you try to wireless or USB tether your computer? Here are two work arounds to stop that:
Difficulty: Easy. ROM: Any. Description: Spoof computer web browser to say 'Android' when loading web pages.
1) Install an EU ROM. Any ROM based on T-Mobile US has a script that will block tethering if Android is not recommended.
2) (SUGGESTED) (Avoiding the script) No root needed. No APN switching (because that sh!t does not work). You need to spoof your computer's web browser to an Android device. Go on your add-ons/extensions installing page (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, maybe more) and search for a user account spoofer / switcher. I am on Chrome and I use 'Chrome UA Spoofer'. Select the Android Motorola Xoom device to spoof to. Tether via wireless or USB and it works constantly. The only downside is that some pages load in mobile view. You can easily select to show full web page. I used this for multiple hours, multiple PCs, multiple different times and never was redirected to T-Mo asking me to add tethering to my plan.
Why does this happen? Ever since Android 4.0, they added a script in the OS which does this. You cannot uninstall it because it is located very deep in the system (maybe you can, but no one has figured it out.) If you have a EU ROM (no wifi calling), then you will be fine to tether with no problems and no spoofing. Please click thanks if I helped
The APN thing does work; I use it daily for my Fire, and my laptop on occasion. Not to mention the FCC just smacked Verizon for $1.25M for blocking customers from tethering with third party apps, so T-Mobile should follow soon to avoid a similar fine.

T-Mobile should be stopped for that. But I have to say the the APN did not work for me. It worked for about 20 minutes, then I was never able to connect again.

Actually they don't have to allow tethering, nor will they be fined. This was a rule specific to LTE implementations. Since T-Mo is on HSPA+, those rules in no way apply to them.
Also, to the OP -- this works, but you need to keep in mind that it only would apply to web browsing. Tethering is detected via packet identification. The combination of the TTL (time to live) and the device (Android vs computer, etc) gives tethering away. If you were to use bittorrent on your computer, the packets would be identified as computer, and with a computer TTL.
Dang, that sucks. I thought it had to do with data limits, since they aren't required to allow it for their unlimited customers.

It's been figured out over on the Sensation forum. It's a tether apn set to be hidden in the apn.xml found inside the framework.apk, if I recall correctly. Steve from the Elegancia Rom should be able to help.

How did you get FoxFi to work? I tried it and said it won't work on this device. And when I use bluetooth, the tethered device can't do certain things outside of the browser.

Then you are using the wrong rom,I was using Elegancia rom and it worked for me. You can't just root the stock rom and expect it to work, there is a separate hidden tether apn built into the framework.apk I believe.

[APP][4.0+] TopNTP 1.1 - Achieve Rapid GPS Locks, Use more GPS Sats, Reliable NTP

GPS.conf Profiles
This app does installs a customized gps.conf file for your GPS. It has several different profiles to choose from. We recommend to use the default Google profile but it is up to you. Apart from the general profiles, you can customize the one profile you choose to fit your own needs.
NTP Servers
Derek Gordon maintains a special NTP server pool for you. Dispite what everyone thinks, it is not necessarily the one closest to you which is the best. We consider Derek Gordon's server to be the best option to choose because it has the best data and is most frequently updated.
For more information about the NTP server check out the "About this app" section found under the settings of this app. Also, feel free to visit derekgordon.com for more in depth information.
aGPS Alamanacs
Derek Gordon maintains a special aGPS almanac for devices using Qualcomm or similar chipsets. This xtra.bin data file is updated every 30 minutes and is located on a content delivery system maintained by the generous donations of ther userbase.
For more information about the NTP server check out the "About this app" section found under the settings of this app. Also, feel free to visit derekgordon.com for more in depth information.
Donations
To maintain the server we need money. Donations through this app will be divided between Derek Gordon (Crypted) and Zatta on XDA.
Each star costs 2 Euro and will reduce the waiting time before you can install the patch. 0 star users wait 20 seconds, 1 star users 10, 2 star users only 5 and 3 star users and Premium users can install immediately.
You can become a premium user for only 5 Euro. This is a discount of 1 euro compared to a three star user! We choose this method to allow every one to use all features of this app and because we believe in XDA developers users. Please, don't leech!
Backup and Restore
On the first run of this app a backup is made on your SD card. Don't remove it because a backup is only made during the first run (or at an update if you choose to remove it anyway) and no other backup is found on your SD card.
ROM Updates
The patch this app provides is located on your /system partition so every time you do update your ROM the patch is overwritten and you will have to redo the patch.
Unless you are using a Cyanogenmod based ROM and your rom has addon.d support. In that case a script will be placed in the addon.d directory to preserve the patch.
It can be disabled in the app's settings but is enabled by default.
ASUS Users
On ASUS roms a typical file is present at /system/etc/gps, namely the gpsconfig.xml file. This app pathes that file as well, to be specific the PeriodicTimeOutSec parameter. Of course a backup is made of this file as well.
Get it on Google Play!

I use GPS Status app for testing my GPS, and after installing this app, it needed <10 secs to find my exact location. And I wasn't even under the clear sky.It usually takes min or two to get lock. The thing is, when I opened maps, it wasn't so precise. The circle was around 1km big.Thats strange.I will test more tomorrow though.
Can you explain exactly how this app helps to get quicker gps lock?

I can't do that exactly because there are many variables that are tweaked. This has been a long process, Crypted spent roughly 2 years experimenting with the gps.conf file and maintains 30 (!!) threads for various devices all over XDA.
The main thing though is the excellent ntp server he maintains.
Thanks to all downloaders over the past two weeks. We are now on a steady 400 active installations of the app, that is a rate of 66 percent of the total downloads which is great!
What makes me even more proud is that I didn't get any bug reports so far..

No it didn't create the backup of original file. just the folder was created in the sdcard. The new file is created in system/etc folder. I will try to upload original GPS confg file from ROM dump. I'm on micromax a110 device. It is a rebranded Chinese phone available in Indian market
Just to give some more info if that will help. I'm using an extremely large host file to block ads. not sure if this has any connection.
Been testing this on a Nexus 4 with Stock ROM and Franco Kernel. I've always had spotty GPS (if at all, specially inside buildings if I don't turn On WiFi). Yesterday, it locked me inside my house without WiFI after reboot in 3-4 seconds. Today, it has been kind of spotty. I flashed the General settings with no specific Country. I live in Puerto Rico. Do you recommend some specific settings?

Come on now, don't be so vague...
When it doesn't work, where are you? When it works, where are you?
Do you have any non-standard Nexus 4 ROMs installed? Any other GPS tweaks installed?
If it locks at a previous location, it sounds like GPS isn't being activated and it uses cached coordinates.
I have Stock ROM rooted with Franco Kernel, nexus 4. It doesn't work as well inside buildings which is to be expected. Yet I would like to have at least an estimate of my position. Couldn't this be done with network data? No other mods installed.

[APP][2.3+][Update 17/09/13][Free/Pro]Free Tethering Unlocker

Free Tethering Unlocker
Unlock your tethering possibilities!
With this simple app you can, finally, use your Mobile Data plan, to surf with your notebook or any device you want, without having to pay any extra to your network operator!
As you can see here, since Android 4.1.2, Google introduced a new tethering function to "mark" tethering packets, so the operator can bill the user for that traffic separately from the traffic generated locally by the phone. May be useful even with Android 2.3+, when tethering problems occurs.
This app makes a simple trick to the routing table, to permit tethering traffic to proceed to the mobile network without any modification :victory:
PLUS, on the premium version, there is an on boot unlock function that will patch the routing table at every reboot, automatically. This way you can forget about the existence of this app and freely enable tethering when you need.
Features:
Automatic interfaces detection
Boot time patching (Premium only)
Wi-Fi and USB tethering mode supported
Tested operators:
The application works properly on all Android devices 2.1 +, but was tested on the following devices:
Vodafone IT
Changelog:
-----1.0.8------
Fixed interface detection bug, multiple interfaces support (LTE Galaxy S4)
New configurations added: T-Mobile
Translations fixed.
Known Issues:
If you use "superuser" on some ROMs you cannot get root privileges. To solve this, download "SuperSU".
Very Important:
In the app menu, there is a link to report your current operator configuration, this way if your actual configuration is not supported (the application wont work) I can see what is happening and can fix the app for your configuration.
This help me a lot, so, please, do it if the app don't work for you. Thanks.
Download:
Download the application from the market here
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.kernelxp.freetether
Screenshots :
Remember, if you like this application, rate and review it! Thanks!
Let me know which phone and which operator you use, to complete the compatibility list, thanks.

Thank you sir..
Noob Attack!
Uhm, sir, noob question from a noob person...
Does this app ,of yours, works like those WiFi Tethering apps like Barnacle WiFi / OpenGarden...?
And if it so, how does this differ from those apps?
And if it isn't so, does my phone required to have WiFi Tethering and Hotspot support to use this?
This app only patches original mobile WiFi hotspot (tethering) Android application.
This way you can use what tethering application included in Android distribution, there is no need of external applications like opengarden.
BTW I think, but not assure, that my app will unlock third party tethering application too, so you can use whatever tethering application you want and test if with my patch the tethering starts working.
If you do that, please, report the result here, so I can add compatibility.
Thanks.

Brilliant!
Does it also spoofs my mac address?
Enviado desde mi MB860 usando Tapatalk 2
Android stock mobile WiFi hotspot uses NAT, so...yes, your operator sees only your phone's MAC address.

Thanks!

This is simple, you have only to unlock tethering with this app, then try to surf with your PC, through the mobile WiFi network created by the phone. If you can see something and you have not paid anything for that....it works.
I suggest to call your operator and ask for disabling the tethering profile. This way (the one I've done) if you can surf the web from your PC, you're sure not to pay. In case the app is not working gor you, and you're using the standard tethering APN (and your operator will charge for that), the connection will be interrupted and you will be not charged for anything.
Let me know, bye!
BTW, today I'll publish an update with new configuration. Stay tuned!

Worked first time!
PHONE: INFOCUS M512 (Foxconn)
OS: 4.4.2 (root), MIUI
OPERATOR: FIDO/ROGERS (Canada)
4G/LTE
I had NO working tether on this phone since purchase 2 weeks ago (tether was working on retired Apple 3GS - same 1 GB data plan). I probably could have gotten it working on the new Android with a call to FIDO tech support, but I remember when i bought the new SIM card, the sales guy at the mall kiosk warned me that FIDO calculates their tethering data a "little differently" than phone data, and that I might notice higher-than-expected usage totals on my statement...
I think not.

Anything new with this app?
Hi!
I'm currently working on a brand new application, with Material Design graphics.
Also the engine is updated, hopefully supporting more unlocking techniques.
Unfortunately my job does not help me in this; I've very small amount of time to write this app, therefore I cannot give you an estimation about when I'll be able to release it. Sorry.
Regards,
Marco.

Hi Marco & thanks for your app.
I've had it on my phone for a while, and it has been working fine, however due to the ever increasing load on my ram & cpu from all the apps & google service updates, I have had to prevent a bunch of system processes & apps from running.
This has stopped your app from working.
Can you please list the system apps/processes that your tether unlocker app needs access to or need to be running so I can enable just the necessary ones thanks?
