[APP] CalcTunes - Desktop-style music player for Android [ALPHA 0.47] - Android Apps and Games

I've been working on this for almost a year now off and on. I wanted a media player that gave me more control then the stock player included with Gingerbread (CM7). This drove me to try other players such as MortPlayer, which could play folders directly. It lacked the ability to have multiple root folders, however, so on a device with multiple storage directories (internal, sdcard, network server, USB, etc) it made listening to music difficult. The new players in ICS still fail to achieve this, as the Android MediaScanner backend they use only looks for auto-mounted locations. If you use NTFS, ext3, USB storage, or any other system that Android will not automatically mount, it will not find your music.
To remedy this, I decided to write my own music player (which is also my first Android app) based around the concept of having multiple "libraries" which are built by selecting a set of root directories to scan. You can have more than one library, such as having all of your home server's music scanned in but a separate library for on-device files. Libraries can span multiple storage locations or just single locations.
It's still very much a work in progress, but it's stable enough to be useful. I just implemented a swipe system to switch between views, adding a track info view which has tag and file info as well as a large album art view. Eventually I want to add Last.Fm artist/song info, lyrics, and possibly other content to this view using tabs. The scanner will pull album art from Last.Fm when you scan a library.
I also added support for DSPManager/AudioFX, which apparently is a per-app thing on CM9+ ROMs. It should be compatible with Gingerbread and up, one of my goals was to keep GB supported as I have an Archos tablet running CM7 that has a great DAC for audio.
The project is open source under GPL, hosted on GitHub here: https://github.com/CalcProgrammer1/CalcTunes
Version 0.47 Alpha: https://github.com/downloads/CalcProgrammer1/CalcTunes/CalcTunes.apk
I'd appreciate feedback, so far it's only been used by me and my friend. There are rough edges. For one, playlist functionality has not been implemented yet, so the placeholder items do nothing. The filesystem browsing is primitive. The notification doesn't work properly. Other than that, it should be reasonably stable.

[Reserved for additional updates]

The app is awesome but I think it needs some redesigning
The UI look squished in

It works great so far, running the same hard/software as you.
I greatly enjoy the UI.

The image not showing.

Wow looks really good except the orange color
The App force closes everytime I click on the record icon
I am on Android 4.1.2 / HTC ONE X

I will definitely try this one and would like to suggest two things for future updates - 1. .lrc format lyrics support. and 2. a customizable music widget which could support different skins. Thank you.

It force closes when trying to add a folder to the library and when clicking on the record
System only shows the files on the internal memory (sdcard) but all my music is on the external (sdcard-ext)
Using Atrix 4G rooted Stock 2.3.6

You can change the color in the settings, I use orange to match my phone's theme. As for the force close, I forgot to add that you need OpenIntents OI File Manager (or CM File Manager on many CM ROMs) as I use its file selection intent to select library folders. I would like to add a widget eventually, but first I want to improve the media info view, add playlists, and improve the notification to show album art and have controls on ICS+ devices where it is supported.

Turn off small-screen mode in settings, it is broken and needs work. That looks awful compared to what it should (some reason two lines were highlighted? small screen now-playing bar has broken year field?) and the new large-screen layout uses swiping. Like I said, still very much an alpha release!

Installation:
1,download attached file
2,Send it to Your device
3,Install it! - The Music and JumperTest icons appear in your menu
Simple isn´t it?You don´t need to replace anything in system files.REALLY
One of installed icon is JUMPERTEST! What is that all about? As far as we can tell, using all of our intuition powers, is that this is the key to streaming all of your music – from your desktop and from the cloud, back down to your handset. Sounds like a big deal? That’s because it totally is. This right here could be the key to spurring up competition for the iPod. Holy crap can you even believe it?
When you’re in the JumperTest app, take a peek under your Controls tab – you’ll see Start Peer, Stop Peer, and Import Local Media. Neato! Then when you’re back in the Music Player app, check under Music settings – there are straight up options for streaming. It even appears that you’ll be able to cache streamed music for later use – fabulous!
Then there’s a search function you can use on any song – all you’ve got to do is a longpress and it pops up with multiple options – the coolest of which right now is the ability to move right to YouTube. You like the song and want to see if there’s a music video to go with? Easy!
And here comes some more screenshots:
I hope You will like it! And don´t forget, that this is only testing version: stability can´t be as good as expected and some functions (like Equalizer) aren´t included.
Have a nice day!
Matty

I'm running JMA. I tried to install it before and it asked to overwrite the system app (which it obviously can't do) then tried deleting the stock app and replacing it with this one using Root Explorer but I got fc constantly. Seems to be the same with this apk.

You have to remember that this app is not indicative of how the TAB will run Honeycomb or even Honeycomb apps. This .apk is Beta (at best) it may even be alpha. Once Honeycomb is released on ASOP, then we can see how the Honeycomb .apks will work on the TAB.
hmm, let's hope so
coz i really2 want honeycomb for my tab ^^
Nice looking player, can't wait to see the final and stable versions appear. Does this come with a widget or is it too early for such things?
Thx for posting though
There is a widget. You can add it on Your homescreen as usual:Left menu icon->Add->Widgets->Music....and here it comes but it doesn´t show the album art, just name of the file and possibility to stop the music or skip to another track.....works like a charm
There is a problem parsing the package.
Won't install, downloaded on the tab and emailed the apk to my son's desire and it installed fine there, but not on the tab! Strange.
Thank you sir. Works on my SGT. Stock Rom

[APP][7/17/11] Roku Wi-Fi Remote

New! Actual graphics and styles!
This app controls a Roku streaming video player over wifi using Roku's External Control Protocol. It's the best (possibly the only working) free one on the market and can even do a few things the paid apps can't!
Features:
Find and connect to your player in less than 10 seconds without having to manually enter its address - even works with players connected over wifi!
Roku ECP - way more reliable than the old Telnet protocol some other remote apps use
Full 12-button control including Back and Instant Replay
List and launch channels directly from your phone
Automatically jump to search screens using your phone's search button*
Enter text on your phone and send it to the player - never use the on-screen letter picker again!
*Most channels support this on most screens. Hulu is a notable exception

Changelog:
2.3 - Improved layouts and graphics
2.2 - Improved auto-scan
2.1 - Added search, channel picker, and text entry
2.0 - Added auto-detect, multi-player support, optimized layouts, and more!
1.1 - Fixed a problem where some screens on the Roku player (like Netflix menus) wouldn't respond to commands.
Updated to 1.1. Now works way better with Netflix.
MAJOR update! Auto-detect, better screen support, and more! If you thought it sucked before, it's worth another look because I sucked out all the suck.
Updated again. Now you can pick channels, search, and enter text directly from your phone!
Updated to 2.2. This adds a few UI tweaks and methods to deal with some unreproducible force closes on startup I'm seeing in around 1% of my users. If you get one, please report it with as much information as possible!
Updated to 2.3. Finally added a custom layout and graphics, so now it's not quite as ugly.
Very cool app.
Would you consider releasing open source so others could port it to Windows Phone, etc.?

Windows Phone is in a totally different language (C# I think) - there's nothing you could really port and the Roku control protocol is documented on their website.
Quite useful, thankss!
what's the difference between the free version and the pro version?
Would it even be possible to get this working with the games?
Love this app, thanks for your hard work. Better than the paid ones imo.

Roku WiFi FC on Toshiba Thrive
Ethan-
Thanks for a great program! I use it all the time, since the remote is persistently lost at my house.
I just fired version version 2.10 (as reported by Titanium Backup) up on my Toshiba Thrive (HC 3.2), which was hardware locked (with a switch) in landscape mode, and got an Force Close each time. Suspecting the rotation to be the issue, I unlocked rotation, and started Roku WiFi in portrait mode. Voila! It worked correctly. (I did a similar test on my Droid Bionic GB 2.3.4 - no problem.) With the app still running, I then unlocked the tablet, rotated the tablet to landscape, locked it, and checked again. Strangely enough, no FC when switching back and forth between another app and Roku Wifi. (Roku WiFi always came up in portrait.) However, if I actually exit the app and restart, FC comes back.
As a separate issue, please note that the auto-find feature doesn't work on my network (on neither the Thrive nor the Bionic). I have 4 Roku units, which Fing sees just fine in network discovery, and identifies by the MAC address. Manually connecting to the Roku units by IP address works perfectly.
If you are interested in suggestions, some way of accommodating multiple Roku units would be handy. At the very least, please consider pre-populating the manual connect IP address dialog with the current address so it's easier to change (rather than having to re-edit it each time).
Let me know if you'd like more debugging information to help find this problem.
Best regards,
-Jim

God job man, my only choice for the music love!
Really like the YouTube search option, makes finding and sharing tunes a breeze!
I have few suggestions though:
Media Scanner to rescan the external SD card so the player can discover the newly downloaded content. The native scanner only scans the card at boot up.
Rotation support, I really dislike when apps don't support landscape orientation. First of all, landscape offers wider view for which comes in handy to see long song names and second, it's rather annoying having to rotate the phone every time when switching between apps that have different rotation support.
Now playing open window options availablity, can you add a favourite button and direct YouTube song search there so switching to the current playlist section is uneeded?
Otherwise this is one of the very best music apps there is and I would love to throw you a little donation, specially if you could implement some of these suggestions! ?
Looks good. But need folder and storage option searchs. Otherwise works great. Would like rotation as well but these are just suggestions. Good job
The app always crashes if I rotate the screen when the app is onscreen. I'm running Lineage OS on Galaxy S5.
Howzit...
What's the chances of adding a feature where I can select which folders to be scanned for music? And also a share option for media?
Otherwise it's looking good.
Hey, folks & devs!
I'd really like to know what's going on with development of this fine app? XDA Labs says it's removed from the repo, hopefuly not for good. Maybe devs decided to move elsewhere?

Subtitle size
Hi, Thanks for share this App.
Would it be possible to modify the position of the subtitles?
Where is It option to mirror to Miracast revive?
Playing directly from torrent URL, ok.
Automatic subtitle download, ok.
But mirror to Miracast not exists.
You guys are rock! I have tried a bunch of similar app, but those are crap. It works as it needed. Thank you for your hard work.
I have only one small question to you.
Could you fix it to run it on Amazon FireTv stick, please?
That would be awsome, because it doesnt work on it now. Is there a way to fix it? I have tried some version without any luck.
Best regards.
This works great. Just out of curiosity, does it keep the file segments it downloads somewhere in a cache (location?) or are they deleted, and if are they deleted, is it as the file is playing and old segments are deleted, or once the video file is closed or the app is closed?
hello,
it's a great app.
can you please let me know the location where the downloaded file for the torrent is?
This is such a good app. Why is development stopped on this? I recently bought an Android TV and this app is a lifesaver. There are some bugs that need to be fixed but otherwise, I am quite happy with this. I would love the developer to restart the work on this. I am also happy to donate if needed.
External storage usage
Hi! Thank you for the app. It's the best torrent player I have used on Android.
I use it regularly on my xiaomi mi box. It would be nice to use external storage to buffer the video file (or at least making it an option) as this kind of devices have very short amount of storage.
Nice App :good:
Hello and thanks for the new update. But unfortunately subtitles still doesn't work I tested on a video through stremio. When i played Matrix,i pressed to find subtitles (Only subtitles org seemed to work) but when i press, nothing happens.
The new update is amazing. Torrents definitely load much faster and now we finally have the option to remove already watched items so on Android TV the storage error doesn't pop up anymore. Well done.
Is there anyway to get Wako addon to work with this app.
https://wako.app/home
wow , great
Thanks for this great job!
I'm using this app on Mi tv and it's very good for its purpose.
