Repair 3,5mm audio plug/Where to buy? - Desire Accessories

Hi,
when listening to music with my HTC Desire I often had sound only on one ear, I had to push the plug in the jack to get full sound. There was something like a loose contact, but I always managed to fix it. Now my phone does not recognize my headphones and plays the music over the internal speakers, I cant get it working. I guess its broken. BEcause giving it to the costumer service is so expansive, I want to repair it on my own, can I "open" the jack and check this "bracket" pusing against the plug (maybe its twisted)?
Where can I get a new jack and solder it on the right place?
Thanks for your help!

there not so freely available now try maplins i remember we just used to go out but cable & the plugs you needed then with a lil solder you could make any combo you liked but they got on to that noew youve got to buy new its such a waste

maplin not maplins they have the plug you need hope this helps if so thank me

The desire audio jack is soldered to the upper board and can be replaced with a little soldering but the audio jack isn't a simple commercially replaceable part with a fitting, it's shaped towards the phone and I've only seen a few handsets use this type of connector, getting a replacement may not be that easy. Keeping in mind that even opening your phone voids the warranty, you can always open it and try to push the pins horizontally deeper into the well from the sides of the audio jack (as the pins are accessible from under the upper housing).

It happens to me as well. I tried exactly what you said, to open the phone and try to twist the pin but it didn't work, I had to sent it to the customer service and they replaced the entire upper board of the phone, that includes camara, jack, gps and gsm antena, flash, and the whole things plugged in the upper board, in fact it's the half of the phone hehe.
what you can do, it's to buy that piece somewhere and repleace it by yourself, its really easy!
The piece is : "OEM HTC Desire Motherboard Flex Cable Ribbon" ( I can't put the link, because the forum does not permit me to do it, search in google)
The jack plugging its in the corner in a transparent black box, you can't repleace only that.
If you change it, remember to push hard into the GPS antena located in one side, it looks like a covered wire. Otherwise you won't have gps
Good luck!
EDIT: SORRY!! I Found only that piece! "OEM HTC Desire Earphone Jack - Replacement Part" But i don't have idea how to assemble it

3.5mm jack repairs/diag

Hi Guys,
I am one of the unfortunate one's who now has a broken 3.5mm jack.
Problem:
TP2 is stuck in headset mode.
After sticking in 3.5mm plugs like 50times it won't produce any sound in 3.5mm jack either now!
Tried:
wiggling 3.5mm plugs all over the place
re-romed to a different rom even.
powered down, removed batter etc
out of warranty - i think? if it's 1 year + in a different country
Has anyone been able to pull apart the 3.5mm jack to fix the pins, or have a diagram so at least i know where i can poke and prod?
Any suggestions etc much appreciated,
Riss
I had this same problem and after attempting to plug it in over and over, cleaning the contacts, applying gentle pressure, etc. I finally got fed up and figured that I'd take it in after trying one last thing...
I basically stuck a headphone jack inside (not one that's too delicate) and put some leverage pressure on it in all the directions. And it fixed it. Don't put *too* much pressure on it or you'll have to explain why you broke off a headphone jack inside your phone, but putting just a little more pressure than you'd normally feel safe doing fixed the problem for me.
YMMV, and I'm totally not responsible if you break it lol.
Thanks for the idea, i'll give it a try.
I've claimed and received $$ on insurance, so now i've got to decide if I buy another TP2 or move onto something like a galaxy s or whatever... so much to look at.

Anyone have headphone jack issues?

I hook up my phone to my auxiliary in my car and when it's fully plugged in, it only works with one speaker. Same happened when I used headphones as well. If I twist the aux cable a little, I can get it to work somewhat but it's very annoying because pretty much any movement causes it to go back to one speaker. Definitely an annoying issue especially while trying to use my phone as a music player as well. This happen to anyone else? Any type of fix for this?
I have the same exact issues. I don't believe there is a fix without opening the phone up. I have heard of others having the same issues but I haven't done any research on it.
I definitely thought I read about other ppl having this issue when the phone first launched. Also vaguely remember a thread about it too. But thanks for replying and def not opening my phone lol. It'll become a $300 paper weight
I had this issue as well. It was a problem from the first time i ever plugged headphones in. I thought i was going to have to send it back. It went on for weeks. Turns out, I didnt have them plugged all the way in even though i thought i did. I had to push much harder for them to go all the way in. I felt stupid. Work great now lol. Not saying that you have this problem. Just giving my experience.
Samsung uses a metric variation on thier male headphone jack. The actual female phono jack on the device is for 1/8" connectors. For some reason headphone/line cables are coming out in a metric size that the manufacturers claim is compatible with a true 1/8" jack and they are, but they are slightly undersized than a true 1/8" jack which can cause a loose connection resulting in channels not working properly.
The tip is also slightly modified on the metric male jacks causing that "not fully inserted issue".
Stick with good name cables/headphones with true 1/8" plugs, and that will stop alot of issues that may arise.

My son works for verizon and has a GS3 also and he says try shutting off voice commands if you have them on. They cause issues with the head phone jack sometimes.
Settings/language and imput/voice command for apps.

Will try this next time I can and the other suggestions next time I'm in my car. Just don't want to jam it too far in though and end up breaking it lol. Too bad my cars blue tooth audio doesn't work because then this issue would be solved for most of my audio uses
Exact same problem here. Started within the first week of owning the phone. Cant plug it in any further. I think its a bad jack as every 3.5 mm connector ive tried including the one that came with the phone has the same problem. Found this on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Flex-Ca...051?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19d3950c8b Im guessing it will fix the problem but I am waiting to see if its more reliable then what shipped with the phone. I plugged mine in daily at least 5 times. Just using bluetooth now got a belkin bluetooth adapator for 25 from amazon that is tied in with a fm modulator from amazon for 14. A hack on a hack but it works. Not the best audio fidelity but good enough.
I've only been recently using my headphones with this phone, though they have worked fine. That final click for a positive stereo connection is more tough than one might expect for a portable device, but it's quite secure feeling.
With my Sennheiser PX-100 portables, there's no connection problem with this phone and balance between the speakers seems good. The connection needs to be made fully, pushed down flush with the phone edge and any phone protector needs to lie out of range of the connector, IMHO.
I then tested with my over-the-ear cans, but purposefully using a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter whose 1/8" connector was bent, and noticed a slight left channel bias. The bent adapter did seem to have a problem getting 100% into the jack, as well - still, it was pretty much all the way in with only the slightest bit of lift on one side.
So, I would agree with the poster above who mentioned that - if there are differences between your headphone's male connector and the type they happen to use in this phone - even a slight difference in connector vs jack size could cause an issue for playback.
If all male connectors give problems, I guess the possibilities are:
a. Male connector is not being inserted 100% flush to the phone edge
b. Phone cover is interfering with the connector being 100% inserted
c. Bad phone jack or downstream connection

Pushing it in all the way is not always the fix.. Cant push any of the several headsets I tried in any further. Bad jack add insult to injury the factory charger that came with the phone mysteriously just died wtf .

If it won't push in such that the male connector's body is flush with the phone edge, then it is either a bad jack on the phone to begin with (your guess) or all your connectors are somehow incompatible with the new size of jack this phone uses, it would seem.
You're saying the wall charger just died? Might be a warranty on that from Verizon, I'd go to a store or give them a call.

Galaxy s3 headphone jack temp fix
I've had the same problem, tried buying a new cable but audio would only play from one channel
Today playing about I noticed if I pressed the jack slightly to one side it would work, so simple solution, I've bent the metal end of the jack ever so slightly and now it works like a charm with my galaxy s3. No more endlessly messing about playing withthe cable till iit works. Now I say again, vend the jack end slightly till it works, not too much else it might not plug in at all. Hope this helps people out!! Mark

I also have exactly the same problem in my car. I have a 3.5mm audio cable which worked fine for the first few weeks and then all of a sudden it stopped playing through the left speaker. At the same time, I also have crackling connection issues when I plug my S3 into a speaker in the kitchen. Headphones seem to work fine though.
It's almost as if some static caused a fault inside the female jack on the S3 given that it worked perfectly for ages and then all the problems came at once.
I tried disabling the voice commands as someone noted above (they were annoying me anyway) and it seemed to make a difference to the crackling but not the reception out of the left speaker - its still very low volume.
I was interested in the post from the guy who said there was a slight difference between 1/8 and 3.5 mm. Which way around is it? The cables I have all claim to be 3.5mm, so are you saying that the S3 has a 1/8th female jack?
I wonder also if there is a 3.5mm to 1/8 inch converter that would do the job. A quick google search didn't throw anything up though.

[Q] Is it possible to replace the jack plug ?

I know there are other thread's related to Jack problems but none answer my question.
You can check the thread's related to jack problems/bug's here or here.
So i have this phone for more than 2 years and yes he has the dust particules problem, the quick heat problem, and now after a couple of days using headphones (never used in 2 years , just now that im running) i only hear from one direction, even if i try to plug any kind of headphones.
My question is , Is it replacable ? I watched some screen replacement videos in Youtube and i always see all the system attached in the jack plug location , more even if i remove the "1st cover" i still cant reach the jack plug so i can try to fix myself the pin that is not giving contact.
If any 1 have a tip i will be completely thankful.
I have tried with air i have tried with contact spray with cotton , tooth stick but no luck , it's just inaccessible because of that metal clip that it's protecting the jack plug.
Thanks in advance.

Hi;
Did you use isolation between headphones and jack, like in the first thread you linked?
Also remove back cover and try connecting them.
Regards.

Yes i used isolation tape , and even without the back cover i only ear from one side of the phones , i try to move around the jack to see if i can catch sound in the right side but no luck at all. Since i dont hace physical access to the jack plug i cant do nothing .

Hi;
If you see there is something inside the jack(like dust and dirt), but you cannot remove it, then it would better to take it to a repair shop and explain to them the problem. Even if you don't see anything stuck, the repair shop is your best bet.
Regards.

Cracked jack

Good day. On my lg p925 jack is broke. Plays only one side of the headphones but when you give it to the correct position - so sometimes both headphones work but it is very laborious. Is there any change to fix it? or need to replace the whole jack? it can be? how much would it cost? I tried to clean the jack but I did not see inside so I do not know if there's anything to mislead but I think that there is something broken inside

you probably have to get it changed completely nd not sure about the price different places ask for different prices
I have the same problem. It's not working because the end of jack (left headphone signal) does not touch the end of the socket. You can apply a tiny drop of tin on the end of headphones' jack (do it very carefully!), it works for me but the sound is not 100% clear.
2nd option: (just theory, I did not tried it): the bottom connector at the end of the socket can slightly bend up and down. You can disassemble the phone, open the socket and put something between the connector and socket's end, so the connector will touch the end of jack.
my jack is very loose and headphones fall
The jack is 3-5 dollars on eBay.
Buy it and open it up. Unplug the connectors. Remove the sim board. Now remove the exposed connectors. Remove the logic board. There you go , headphone jack is exposed. Now remove the old one , it is held in place by a double sided tape. Plug in the new one And close up. About as easy as peeing blindfolded...

Another option is to use a bluetooth stereo headset you would have to charge it everyday but if your not comfortable opening your phone up your could go this route.
sony makes a nice one and philips also I cant post links yet. just search stereo bluetooth headset on amazon.
I have that issue that when I slightly move the jack plug, my phone recognises it as pushing buttons on my headphones, so the player turns off a song or plays next etc.. It's really annoying, because I can't listen to the music when I got phone in my pocket. Do You have an idea how to fix it? I know I can disable the option :listen to headphones buttons" but I want to have it working like in the past.
I had the loose problem that they falled off and headphone acted as buttons too..But I found kinda solution..I never did put the headphones correctly in.. If you look at your phone you shouldnt see the connector. And It should make a click sound when putting in jack.

[Q] Dodgy headphone jack socket?

My headphone jack has been janky lately, if I nudge the jack while it's inserted the sound will cut out briefly in one ear, it's mostly fine nearly all the time, but it's getting annoying.
I recently had the phone open to replace the battery, and I tried to fix it myself at the time by raising the height of the gold contacts there so any movement wouldn't disconnect it, but no dice.
Will buying a brand new socket for it and just replacing that fix it?
If so how much should I pay for a replacement one (eBay)?
Thanks,
para
Is it possible something is stuck inside the headphone jack? It's also possible that there is something wrong with the motherboard.
I assume you don't have another phone to test the headphone jack?
I have the same problem, sometimes it's the cable of the headphones, so check if it's okay.
I have a spare new one. The headphone socket slots in a gap. Have you looked at a, video showing how to replace it? Do that then take yours to bits and put it back .it should be ok. If not let me know. If you are in the UK I can give you a new one, free.
