Nokia coming with Android? - General Questions and Answers

According to many blogs Nokia is also launching a series of Android Phones, and with Android 5, Is it rumors or Nokia really coming to get back in market ???

I remember reading a while back that at the moment Nokia is putting it's full force behind windows phone and only if that completely failed would they fall back on android.

That's maybe true, Nokia has no other choice.

win phone... epic fail

IMO, they should've continued with MeeGo or gone with Android, the Microsoft pact was a turn to hell for the company, especially now that there are rumors of MS developing their own phone. I can't see how they even could switch to Android at this point, kinda sad, but the company was run to ruins by terribad management long ago, so I think Lumia 920 is going to be their last straw...

Nokia would be better off going bankrupt than making Android phones.

If Nokia made some highly specced AOSP android phones I don't see why they couldn't have some success. I don't think it would be a good idea to try to take on touchwiz / sense when they have a good 3 years head start.

no actually it's just rumors right now nokia right now is focusing on wp8 and the oldy symbian

No, I really don't see that happening. It wouldn't help at all to what they're trying to do with Windows phones at the moment.

That sounds really interesting. I think that Android is much better than any Windows... I still don't trust that Nokia is really going to android.

why got my post about nokia's market-strategy deleted?
> taskumuro.com/artikkelit/the-story-of-nokia-meego

Most likely that is a rumor...Nokia seem to have high hopes for windows phone 8. At least according to what they're showing everyone...plus the Lumia 920 looks like a winner for them.

Nokia bet on Windows
.. and it was another historical mistake with epical consequences. If the Lumias don't succeed, that might have been it for Nokia.
Which is a shame, coz the Lumia 920 - set aside size and weight - is an astonishing piece of technology. WIth Jelly Bean on it, it would have been the phone of the year. Don't even talk about design.

I hope they do they use to make some strong phones.

Once upon a time I was happy Nokia user. Nice hardware, good camera but software... However, if Nokia ever make Android phone, it could be interesting.

Nokiia
Nokia's Lumia series is great. Even a software is really efficient, but too boring for me But wish them luck

[Q] Buy WP7 now or later?

Due to my touch screen slowly losing it's touch accuracy on my cracked screen I'm being forced to replace my Touch Pro 2 Verizon. I decided to go with the Fascinate which will be my second no WM phone and first since 2005 I believe. My contract is up in May as well. I decided against paying 80 or 90 to get a Omnia II or Imagio. I don't think I could stomach WM without a keyboard.
I am interested in WP7 but it seems to be in a very early stage. Verizon doesn't even have a WP7 device at all. I was surprised to see some complaint messages on VZW's own message board about the lack of devices.
Is it better for someone who like to fiddle with their phones a lot to wait until updates with IE9 and multitasking, maybe even new devices come out or do you think its pretty good to go ahead now? Will a techie be able to live with it day to day?
I have a WP7 device in my house but the female is pretty tight gripped with her phone but I have liked what I've seen.
Think about it this way. You already like what you have seen. Well, it WONT get worse. I used to hate my WM 6.5 keyboard, but it was because screen was resistive. I have a Samsung Focus and I love it. Once multitasking gets out there, it can only get better and better.
No other software company has a better potential to integrate an ecosystem than MS.
I believe Verizon will launch its first WP7 device in the coming weeks.

I quite like WP7 but wouldn't recommend it to a friend today. It depends on how patient you are as I don't think it will be mature before 2012. You should have a look at some older threads on the topic and see if you could cope with the issues people have with WP7.

i'd wait at least until mango. but by then nokia wp7 would be only weeks away.
I'd wait at least until Mango but the Arrive looks pretty sweet if you want to jump ship right now.
WP7 might still be a bit young, but we know some of the major features that are coming, it was said before by someone else, but it ISINT going to get worse before it gets better.
and if you dont mind playin with it some, they will already do a lot. Id go with it now and watch it get better as it goes, otherwise it might be a while before you get to switch later, with contracts and all

Simple answer: The OP wants to upgrade, which means he will be tied to (or stuck with if he hates it) the phone for 2 years. Since WP7 is still lacking, there's really no rush. I'd say wait until Mango as not only will the OS be better but also new devices will be coming at that time.
Even if you love your phone (which I guess you do), you have to put that aside to give sound, useful advice and in that case I think it's better to wait.
If you can wait then hold out until Nokia launches. If you need one now then its not a bad os. Its nicer then iOS but the market place is a WP7 weakspot even as of now. If you don't need games then its pretty good.

I guess the main reason for me to wait is because of apps. I need Spotify and what my company is developing (only android and ios for now... but not for long)

what does that mean, without using more buzzwords in the explaination ?
Thanks everyone. I am going to have to wait in the short term anyways until my contract is up. I see Verizon is only coming out with the Trophy in the short term. I am going to debate to see if I want to leave them or not. I like the Arrive as I perfer keyboards if possible and it's essentially a Touch Pro 3 in at least hardware.

Hotmail, Windows Live services, Zune, XBOX Live, Windows Media Center, Windows 7/8, Office 2010/365, Cloud services (Skydrice, Sharepoint), Visual Studio, Silverlight, Bing, Yahoo, etc. No other company has this much software available to integrate seamlessly into one ecosystem like Microsoft can.

Should you switch from X to Y checklist:
Step 1a (on contract purchase) - See what your provider has to offer.
Step 1b (unlocked purchase) - See what is out there in your budget.
Step 2 - Make a list of all the tasks you accomplish on your current phone.
Step 3 - Make a list of all the tasks you would like to accomplish (wishlist).
Step 4 - Do the research.
Step 5 - Try before you buy.
If Windows Phone can do the things you need it to do now and you like it then take the plunge. Be very wary about purchasing a phone that cannot do what you need but will in the future; you may become very frustrated.
I love WP7 too and was going to get the Trophy but I ended up with a Defy (unlocked purchase). I needed Skype and Whatsapp so I will wait until Mango and get the one phone I have always wanted if it was not for its unattractive UI: Nokia!
Hi all
I think that this is the best time to buy an WP7 phone...
In my country (Greece) you can get HTC Trophy or LG Optimus 7 with 199 euros.....
For what those phones can offer this is an amazing price..
With the upcoming mango update and all those stuff that MIX has reveal the WP7 OS
will be a robust and mature enough mobile platform..
Guys ...dont forget 2 moths ago the price for those phones was arrount 500 euros...
IMO yes...this is the best time to buy an WP7 device

The fluidity of the OS in particular is important. Android is the ugly duckling of ios widgets alone creates no fluidity and it's laggy... Might be the x10, but don't think so. I've used the EnergyROMs (winmo 6.5) and it's far superior to both IOS and Android, but as you all know... Few apps and weak hardware. Can't wait for Mango!

IOS or WP7?

Im using 3GS right now and will either upgrade to a WP or IP4/5, I am sick of Android feeling like its still in a beta stage and freezing, closing apps, lagging no matter what phone. Anyway back when I used the focus the UI was amazing! But it was missing features...IOS is great! Time for some new features though imo, has WP7 been upgraded to more features? And how long will those updates last for the current WP's? What in your opinion is the best WP? And ultimatly what do you think is better? Hopefully Apple announces what IOS5 will be like. I really like WP7 but it felt like it needed time to get more features and some Apps were not optimized properly(ebay) but wow! That os is like butter! If it keeps getting features I may have to go WP! Especially if IOS5 is the same old, But for now I guess I gotta stay IOS.
maybe you should wait until fall or september, then both iphone 4s and major updates for WP7 are released, that time you can make a better comparison.which phone to buy...
The Fall Update to WP is a pretty big one, and new hardware will come out with it so I'd wait. The OS as it is, is to me the best designed out there, and the features people have been aching for are almost all coming with Mango (the fall OS update). Its going to be pretty nice, but ultimately up to you what you like most.
you've already pointed out that ios is complete and mature, try a friends phone around christmas and see if wp7 updates are all they're claimed to be...
the iPhone/iOS really is matured. You know where the saying comes from "There is an app for that".
I am still missing a lot of apps I was using on the iPhone, which are not (yet) available for WP7. But I really like the look of feel of WP7.
Wait for Mango if you like simplified device working more or less without any trouble
and you don't miss some basics. The UI is consistent and very easy.
For more sophisticated and better equipped device look somwhere else.

IMO the UI on Wp7 blows iOS out of the water. It's simple yet still highly functional. I keep making my older and less technical users go to WP7 devices. They all seem to love it and I see them on their phones all the time - I'm sure their productivity is tanking lol.
Ignorance is Bliss, as they say.
But I'd wait until Mango and IP5 is our and make a more informed decision.
Right now WP7 can't hold a candle to iOS, but the update will be big. Unfortunately it's months off so you'll have to use a phone that has 30+% less functionality than your 3GS and many showstoppers (and lack of Apps) if you upgrade NOW.
I'd wait.
Wait for iPhone4S/5 and WP7 Mango update, and then decide. You might look into Samsung Galaxy SII as well, it's very fast. Maybe more device coming out with Dualcore/Quadcore that improves Android. WP7 is still in beta stage imho.
I've been using wp7 since October when I replaced my 3gs, and I've missed nothing so far.and that's been very honest, the thing is all I use to use on the iPhone was Facebook eBay satnav n a few more apps so the 300k appstore didn't matter to me. You've gotta think about the features and apps u need. Upgrading to wp7 guarantee u mango update regardless of the handset you choose.
Wp7 Focus
wp7 for sure, the metro UI is amazing.
I just bought a WP& phone, will post what i think of it, just hope the app market kicks off and MS add more functionality and that it becomes moddable

Functionality is more than coming:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1084161
Marketplace is already pretty good considering dev's cant create certain apps yet (Mango SDK will have all the 1500+ API's available, many of which will be used to create these lacking apps).
If you are looking for heavy modification, it may not be the platform for you, but people will definitely be modding it. Just not the extent WM & Android users are probably used to.
I went with the iPhone4, Im still gonna wait and see how WP7 goes and see what Apple does with IOS5, then I can make my Dec with what I want, but Ive heard from a lot of news sources that WP7 is doing pretty bad in sales and that its really not catching on at all, hopefully it dosnt go the way of the Kin phones...
As some have already said, I would probably wait for the Mango update and iPhone 5 before making the decision. I got a WP7 and I really enjoy it, but I think to make a fair choice, you should wait to pick between the two.

They are doing it as quickly as possible. Its a major change at Nokia, it doesn't happen overnight. Nokia is planning for a late 2011 release of their first phone(s), and they are planning a whopping 12 devices (rumored so far) in 2012 running wp7 (including a dual core N8 version with a 12MP high optics camera). They will be using both qualcomm chips and SE dual core chips according to forbes.

There will also be some pretty nice second gen phones from Samsung, HTC, LG ect so people should have quite a few nice ones to choose from.

The way wp7 is integrated I doubt you will win. I gave my daughter my old Samsung Focus and it's smooth and fast. I like both OS's for sure but I'm sure the windows booth will have the phone setup for easy access via the tiles. If you do the challenge, let us know how it goes

Pretty sure this is over, but most android phones can beat it. You just have to be ready, practice and set up your phone beforehand.
Its funny, windows mobile started it all, but when the iPhone and android iOS hit. Windows got knocked out and basically have to start out green. If only they would of stuck with windows mobile 6.5....
SkyRocket [ICS The Real Thing Rom]
yea it was over, but the terms were saying it had to be like out of the box stuff....so meaning we couldnt flash like a custom rom or something, ive only read people with Stock Galaxy Nexus could beat it....its a race from turned off to pulling up like weather...which takes the nokia phone like 15 seconds to boot up
There were several different types of tests and all were geared towards WP7's strengths.
It was an advertising campaign, so I would expect them to do well against most devices.

It was not a test of hardware, it was a test of software and integration.
Something MS did very well with regards to WP7.
And sorry, WP7 does do social integration better than Android.
I own devices running iOS, WP7 and Android and WP7 has the social part nailed down.
Sure, you can find third party solutions for Android, but that's not the point of these tests.
I was not impressed with the Lumia or its Windows operating system. I demo'd one and picked up the Skyrocket instead (I was going to preorder a Lumia a week or so ago because of the $99). The handset was heavy, the touchscreen was not as responsive and it didn't help that it died in my hands. I thought the ATT rep was really good. She pulled a Skyrocket out (her own personal phone) and said I would not be happy with Windows mobile if I was used to Android..(coming from an Atrix that made my mind up and I am happy with my decision)

I wouldn't say the challenge itself was a scam more that some store employees/managers chose to be douche bags and not follow the written rules.
Even the creator of the challenge, Ben Rudolph said some stores were not playing fair.
I think with Nokia WP is finally getting some traction, especially at the price point they're selling it at. It was a smart move for Nokia to go WP rather then Android, it's easier for them to stand out. With Android they would just drown, among the sea of devices.
As far as the challenge goes it's not a scam but clever marketing. It reminds me of the old Pepsi Challenge campaign from years ago, funny how everyone shown in the ads always chose Pepsi
I've played with WP7, and it is a pretty slick OS. That said, these challenges are stacked in WP7's favor: social integration/efficiency.
It's not like they're gonna ask you to go to the market and download Instagram or other apps unavailable on WP7. Or pull up turn by turn navigation from google maps, or change your wallpaper, etc. etc.

Help me decide. Windows vs Android.

I've kinda gotten tired of Android. Not entirely, but as a Mobile OS. I feel I use a phone on Android 10x more than a phone on another OS. Seriously, my average screen on time is 8 hours at the least. I flash Roms, and softbreak my phone 10+ times a week. Tired would be the wrong, I just need an OS that has less. I've been growing fond of Windows Phone. I enjoy the OS, the simplistic look. There's not much you can really do with it, and it just works. All phones on 7.5 are updating to 7.8(Which is 8, but for lower end devices). Mostly all Windows phones that where on 7.0, got updated to 7.5. So what am I saying? All there devices are being updated. There's been on device that's been peaking my interest. The Nokia Lumia 900. By Black Jesus this is a beautiful phone, and I love Nokia. This phone is getting the 7.8 update. The Nokia 920 seems like an even better device. I love android, and I have a Kindle running AOKP Jellybean. But that's all I can see my Android love going as of now. Can anybody convince me otherwise?
I hate windows in fact I am a nokia fan eversince the old 3210. This phone is just my 2nd android device while I already own 32 nokia devices. And the reason I jump off nokia is also because of dumping maemo/meego OS over windows. But hey I'm not here to rant over windows In fact base on your perspective I am recommending you windows over android. Windows maybe annoying to me but I can't deny the fact that it is very stable compared to android and just suites your taste based on this thread. Development on that part is also active than you think. There's dual booting stuffs and custom ROMs also. So my say would be go ahead with windows and don't get pulled down by the open source support hype(android is open source and we can mod it all we want) which is not so true in real life as you can see in our situation with mt4gs I think. Since they might be open source but almost all components aren't.

Also, I have carpel from holding my phone to much XO Thats sad :3
It's all about linux. I am a linux programmer/System Admin & I just feel attached to it. Now seeing android being the most closest OS to linux I can't help myself but to go with it. Like I mentioned this is just my 2nd android device. My previous device before android which is a nokia phablet(n900) runs pure linux but nokia decided to discontinue it due to windows. So basically I hated windows for
1 it replaced my favorite OS of choice and made me stay away from nokia.
2nd I like linux terminal over command prompt
3rd I like android live wallpaper.

Nice, I have an HTC Radar right now. It was my brothers, and I'm enjoying it. I'm running one of the Custom Roms for it. Not much a difference other than some Nokia features, and it's unlocked(rooted). It's fast, and the Keyboard isn't half bad for a touchscreen. I'm missing widgets tho' :T
I was also impressed with the 920. I had an old Nokia flip phone way back, and it never failed. Their build quality is superb.
I'm pretty sure some version of booting android will show up at some point for this device as well. Two of my friends have Windows Phones, and the OS seems even more fluid and visually appealing than Apple's
I'd say go for it.
I would too, but I made a promise to keep my device for another year. Plus, I'm in love with all the options for Android.
That new lumia looks impressive actually. There's a vid on youtube with a guy hammering in a nail with the touchscreen side and the phone still being good. On top of that, he pulled the 2x4 by the nail to show it was hammered in pretty good.
Honestly though, I love android as my personal user preference. Then again, I've never swayed a friend from an iphone either. If you decide to go with windows, I would personally think lumia. Sleek and sturdy. Its all about what you want in your phone.
Then again, I would do some research first. Comparing the iphone 4s/sgs3/lumia is what I would look at though. The best (so to speak) of each os currently.

why not get a windows phone and see how you like it?
there are some amazing deals on unlocked devices.
I think it's fine to give yourself a rest from these things. There's so much going on in the android world that you can suffer update fatigue and information overload!
And if nothing else it means you'll have a working phone for the times when your android device is bricked. Just don't let your friends see you using it, otherwise they'll expect you to be their expert, and will also assume you've sold out!
How about getting an Android phone and using a windows phone 7 themed launcher on it? That way you get the best of both worlds.
Whenever you like, you switch from the simplistic view and go all out in terms of features and functionality by just a switch of launchers

Steve balmer is a royal ASSHOLE, and every single thing MS has ever produced has been a complete and unmatched piece of over priced SH1T.
Windows phone has been a nice change. I find my phone lasting around two days in average. This is with my RSS Feed, GMail, 4 hours of phone calls, and 1000 text. My phones so tiny for my hands tho' Xo The HTC Radar is supposed to get Windows 7.8. I called HTC, and they confirmed it would be getting the update. But not until the Nokia Lumia got it (Since they're Microsoft's partner). I have a GBC emulator which is the most important thing to me. They is a GBA one, but it can only play certain games. All together I'm happy. I got this phone from my Brother, and I didn't bother paying 150 for a replacement phone. I'm just going to wait for my upgrade, and get a One S (free for a couple months now). Then I'm going to sell it, and buy a Lumia 920 when it comes out. I'm happy, I'm not done with Android. It just feels the same to me. AOSP, Sense, TouchWiz, Blur. There all based off the same thing, and no matter what phone I have. I'm rocking an AOSP Rom. I just want a phone that works out the box, not one where I'm rooting to get battery percentage. One where I need to root in order to get my battery to last me a day. I'm tired of waking up and seeing the HTC One XXL + Limited Edition Ultra Max. A phone that is the International Version, but in America with a 2G of Ram. :T Oh Yeah, and it has a bigger battery. I just need a break from Android.

I dunno man. Honestly I feel like the DS community is too small, in part because the MT4GS didn't go global. As a result we don't quite have that support ROM wise. I mean we have the standards, Virtuous Infinity, CM9 and Jellybean but both aren't quite stable and I don't see the devs working on CM9 stability at all. XMC has done his job for Jellybean and it's a DD rom for me but not quite stable. IDK maybe it just bothers me we don't have an even close to stable MIUI or the other roms that all the big phone release's have support wise.
I think if you got the next Nexus, the S3, or the GNEX you'd see so much rom support! All in all, I'd go for a phone with more devs over Windows. My friend bought a Lumia 900 and he loved it for a while, but eventually he just couldn't stand the lack of apps. Sure it was smooth but in the end he went back to his G-Note.

The G-Note is the Ultimate Android device, especially on Jellybean. I forget how amazing that device is. I might need to rethink Windows Phone...but as of now. I want a 920

Anyone tempted to give WP8 a blast? (Lumia 920)

Well?
I've had iPhones, and I have had lots of Android phones ranging from Nexus One to my current Galaxy Nexus.
Android has come on a hell of a long way, but it still lacks a little polish for me.
None of the current crop of Androids really interest me that much (but I am looking forward to seeing the next big HTC and Sony), the new LG Nexus really doesn't do it for me (just looks like the GNex, still a crap camera by all accounts).
However the Lumia 920 has caught my eye. Its a desirable piece of kit, and with Windows 8 just around the corner too, it should start to see much better support and development. I am definitely looking forward to Windows 8. So it kind of makes sense to try on a phone too.
I reckon although the Lumia's specs are not class leading, WP7 was a very quick OS on my GFs Omnia 7 (considering how crap the specs were on that).
Anyone else tempted to give it a shot?
Yeah, for me it's also between the Lumia 920 and I'm also looking forward to BlackBerry 10. Both offer things that haven't be done before. Hopefully they will be reasonably priced.

I want to try WP8 because personally, I like Windows 8 and I think WP8 will be just as good as Windows 8. I like the look of the Lumia 920 but it just doesn't cut the mustard for me... I'd rather by a cheaper Windows Phone to get a taste of WP8.
Looks like WM8 will gain a lot of market (in the future). The story is worth observing though.
I was looking forward to WP8... but it still looks like WP7 with a bit more customization.
Ill pass

There's just too much between Android/iOS and Windows Mobile for me, will it ever gain the support it needs to be a valid competitor? I just don't see it happening I'm afraid.
I currently have a lumia 900 and what really breaks the phone is the lack of apps. Of course there's plenty of decent apps but there's still a lot of work to be done, for example: no pandora app, I use citibank and no app for that, etc.
I really like the OS itself and the how different it is to say iOS or android, but unfortunately the lack of apps makes me want to go to android.
It's kind of a vicious cycle, developers don't take into consideration WP because of people, people don't go WP because of fewer devs.
Not sure what microsoft is planning, but I've had the phone since it came out and there really hasn't been much change.
I was excited about WP8 but less so now.
I have had enough of Microsoft on the computer space. I don't want them in the mobile area. Actually, if Google were to create a real desktop OS I'd be all over it too.
HTC butterfly from japan is the phone I'm looking at. WP8 has no apps at all. It may of changed but my gf tried out a lumia 900 for a week and hated it.

Yes because I will always love windows. People don't like change, give windows 8 and phone 8 a few months and people will adapt to the change.

I was waiting for WP8, but now i'm a little bit dissapointed... We will see if there will be some useful changes. Hope they will do sth with multitasking. Its really irritating!

That isn't gonna change soon seeing as how Microsoft are ignoring their developers. They're withholding the SDK for WP8 till they release the OS officially.
I will try it, do not want to be left behind.
