ICS Update - Motorola Atrix 2

I have tried updating to the new ICS OTA several times and keep getting the software fail update message. I am using no ROMs or anything, just have a my Atrix 2 rooted and thats it. I have tried using OTA rootkeeper and still get the message. Any ideas?
Thanks

Update HTK55D

This just popped up on me does anybody know what this update is?
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium
I just got the pop-up too, and have no idea! ? Going to check Motorola's web site to see if I can find out. Not sure it's worth it for me to unroot!
Anyone know if there is a way to root 3.2.1 yet???
Got the update too, am I correct in thinking I need to unroot to install it on US 3.2 ?
I too just got the update notification on my 3G Xoom running the latest Tiamat Rom. Imma just chill and wait for Team Tiamat's crew to have it rooted. It's not worth a root users time to be on stock. Us root users are power users, and that's something you can't get with pure stock no root.
Point of the post: If you are a root user such as myself, just chill and wait for the devs to do their thing. It's only going to take a day or two if you look at the previous track records.

Agreed. This is what I am doing. However, I must say that the OTA nag every thirty or so minutes is quite annoying, lol.
Its probably nothing. First off its 1.5MB lol. I can imagine it is nothing amazing that Tiamat ROM hasn't already done.
And agreed, the constant notification is extremely annoying. There is a thread in the development forum about disabling the popup I believe.

I got to get in on this as well I agree why would anyone want to unroot for an update that you can get in a rooted version or may already of been done.
But will agree the popup nag is annoying especially since I let my lil daughter play on my Xoom and now I got to stop her incase she presses the wrong thing.
Like everyone above me has said moral to that story just wait it will all be handled
I think the update enabled the use of the SD card . I noticed a " d " folder in my file manager .

Yep. Can be found here. We just need the build.prop from the update to paste in.

sd card support was already there no change with 3.2.1
it is more likely security patch
Incoming noobness....
So, I have a Xoom on Tiamat 2.2.1 as well, and I just started getting this nag screen for the update.
Just curious, what happens if I update? Goes to stock and unrooted?
I assume if Tiamat comes out with an update, it should be an easy install through clockwork mod and I don't have to start from scratch again?
Because the bootloader is unlocked you'll just get an error if anything at all, so nothing to be worried about.
Too bad I don't have a locked bootloader xoom otherwise I'd do the update real fast just to pull the build.prop file since the build.prop file in the update zip is not actual text.
Apparently there's a way to just reroot but I keep trying to find directions and don't know what I'm supposed to do after I update to get it rooted again. Does anyone here know how to do it without wiping data all over again?

Let me try and understand this so you were rooted then ran OTA update to unroot? Just so you can root again?

You use solarnz Universal Root to reroot in the dev section.
would someone who has updated please share their build.prop?
Um...I did the OTA update and it still says I'm on 3.2 in the settings. I also seem to have root access still. Was it unsuccessful? Because I check for updates again and it says I'm up-to-date...What the heck?
sneaky update
yeah, just found it in the notification bar . tab downloaded it automatically,
now it wants me to "restart and install". i dont think so

can you verify that you do have root? run something that will call su, like droidwall
Yes, I can still overclock and it says that whatever program has been granted superuser permissions. I'm still on 3.2 and now the system update says that I'm up-to-date. I got an exclamation point halfway through the install, but everything's still working fine. What the heck should I do at this point? At least I'm not getting nagged to update anymore, but I wanted to be current. Any ideas?
No idea man, im trying to find out what will happen to my xoom "rooted only"
if i apply the ota. will it fail will i lose root, will it brick me. cant seem to find anyone who knows

[Q] Applying VZW system update on rooted, unlocked SG3

I have a rooted, unlocked SG3 running stock ROM and as of a couple weeks ago, continue to get prompted to install the OTA update (VRAGL7 I believe). Unsurprisingly the install fails when I try to apply it.
My question is, do I have to restore in order to apply this update? And if so, is it possible to instead defer the update indefinitely (since I dont want to restore and there doesnt appear to be anything useful in this update according to their site).
Im also sure someone else must have asked this before, but after browsing the last few pages and searching, I couldnt find anything. Feel free to direct me to a previous response if I missed it.
Thanks in advance!
This has been covered numerous times, but, here you go. If you want to take the update, lock your bootloader, Odin back to stock, take the OTA update, reroot, unlock, etc.
If you don't want to do that, freeze SDM 1.0 with Titanium and the message will stop. One thing though, you will not be able to update OTA until you restore SDM. Which, you shouldn't be updating a rooted phone to begin with unless you want a world of problems.
Good luck!

So to be clear, absolutely no way to apply the update without going back to stock first, correct?
Sorry for posting up whats probably been asked 100 times, but really couldnt track it down with a search and browse of the last few pages.
Thanks again.

I did not have to do all that...
I used Mobile Odin Pro to Pre-Inject Root into the OTA Update before flashing it, then I flashed the latest modem immediately after flashing the OTA update.
I didn't lose Root or Unlocked Bootloader status..
Best part of it was... I didn't need my PC to do any of it...
The following thread is the one you should read in detail..

Make sure that you read it and pay attention very carefully. I tried to do the same exact thing and had problems. Had to Odin back to stock. I think my problem was that I was running a custom kernel. Anyway I got the unauthorized software message and could only get into stock recovery and download mode.
Guess I will read the thread myself and see where I screwed up at.

OTA ICS update "The software update failed"

I have a stock rooted Atrix 2. I rooted it literally yesterday (10/9/12) using the once-click method by jimmy's thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1327741). I have tried to update to ICS with wifi 3 times already. My last attempt, I unrooted the phone, removed bootstrap and even factory reset it. I still get "The software update failed."
What am I doing wrong here? I know there are a few others who are having this problem, but with all the problems in one single thread, it is hard to find an exact answer.

You had the A2 bootstrap installed? That's the problem if you didn't remove the files from the /system/bin folder.. if it was the A2 Bootstrap from here, then do this:
-Go to manage apps and clear data and uninstall the A2 Bootstrap app
-Go to /system/bin and delete hijack and logwrapper files
-Rename logwrapper.bin to logwrapper (also in /bin folder)
-Reboot

You will need to re-root.. but just being rooted should not affect your OTA install. Also, if you do have root, go and check /cache/recovery/last_log to see why the install fails exactly.

I just flashed back to 2.3.5. then updated to 2.3.6. OTA and currently right now I am downloading the OTA ICS. If flashing back to 2.3.5. then updating to 2.3.6. to 4.0.4. I will try your method. To be honest, I am new to rooting and what not. I have done so lightly in the past, 2 years ago, but I'm back at it.
Okay I fixed it...on the 5th update. After flashing back to stock rom to 2.3.5 with RSD, then OTA to 2.3.6. then finally OTA to ICS 4.0.4! ICS is pretty awesome. I am really happy with it

You will need to get RSDlite and flash the phone again with 2.3.5 to STOCK. Then just update to 2.3.6 and finally 4.0.4.
If you are in ICS leak 2 you need to downgrade "ICS TO GB" with Jim's tool. It has the .bat file to do so in cmd or you can also use the same file and flash with RSD.

^That will cause soft-bricks. DO NOT use Jim's tool if you are on ICS leak#2 or soak test or final ICS (all the same).
If you meant to say the first ICS leak, then, yes, by all means use Jim's tool to fxz back to GB.

Right... and that leads me to another point (not directed directly at you, of course): If anyone who has installed the ICS leak#1 ota package later flashes a ROM from the dev section based on Leak#2 or Final ICS, that changes nothing in terms of the bootloader - and you are still on Leak#1, and you may use jim's fxz/script package to downgrade to GB.

Your mount_ext3.sh has been modified from stock - you need to replace it.
Or FXZ back to stock..

Great info and got me where I could update my phone. Thanks to all.
My Atrix 2 was rooted of course and reason I could not get update...
Know this may be off subject a bit... but wondering if anyone could point a noob to place where I can re-root after updating to new at&t update for the atrix 2? Searching for this info, but amount returned is bit overwhelming.
Hoping someone that has been successful can point me in right direction.
Thanks again for help on getting new update!

[Q] Atrix 2 Update Failed (Sorry about another one!)

I have previously had my atrix 2 rooted and used the bootstrap apk but never flashed anything on it, and eventually unrooted using the standard one click method posted on these forums. I am currently running gingerbread stock never had another ROM, or any non default zip installed. After about 25% of the way into the update it reboots and tells me that the update failed. I believe it could have to do with the bootstrap or root. Anybody have any tips?

I suggest you to read this forum. Its likely that bootstrap causing the problem. As explained on that thread either you have to clean up bootstrap installations or you have fxz back to 2.3.6(there should be noob thread explains as how to do fxz) and get the OTA for ICS.

[Q] Can't OTA on rooted Atrix 2

The ICS OTA update keeps failing on my A2. I rooted it quite some time ago, and I don't really remember what method I used. As I recall, I initially used super one click, but it became un-rooted some months ago when they the OTA update was released that added emergency updates and a few other tweaks. I then used the first exploit available to root the phone.
I imagine that root access is the most likely culprit, so I did a factory reset; and put in blank microSD card just for good measure, but somehow, it was STILL rooted. I tried unrooting with super one click, and during the process it says
Shell rooted...false
su rooted...True
and continues to say that no matter how many times I try to unroot it. I seem to be stuck. The only other possibility is that it won't update because I'm visiting my wife's family in Canada; but it ALERTED me to the update, and it DOWNLOADS it just fine, so I would imagine that is should install it regardless. Someone help me out?
yes im a noob...please help me not to be
I tried updating and ended up haveing to wipe to the original 2.3.5 install...then update all the way back...unfortunently I think that will kill your root.....
I was having your issue now I am not and am on 4.5.1 but un-rooted till I can find a way to root it again...
hope that helps

I was able to un-root it, from what I can tell. I found the exploit I used and there was an un-root option. Root check says it's lokced down, so does super one click, but it still won't update; so I suppose it's probably just more of AT&T's crap. I guess I'll know when I get back to the states next week; I'm just impatient.
Then again, I waited this long for the official OTA, fighting back the urge to just install the leak, so I guess I'm not TOO impatient.
I just want my freaking update!
Having root will not affect being able to OTA update.
What else have you done to your phone?

Nothing. I've even un-rooted it. My next step is to try to locate a stock ROM and flashing instructions, roll it back and see if that helps. Can anyone point me in the direction for that.
Aaaaand now I've screwed myself up even further. Tried to flash back to 2.3.5 and it's failing at step 6/20. Guess I'll have to go dig up the 2.3.6 stock, which will put me all the way back at square 1.
Sounds like you are trying to use the unmodifed 2.3.5 FXZ. Read this. It has everything you will need to recover.
Good luck!
Yup. That was the problem with that step. I'm not sure WHAT was going on when I was on 2.3.6, but that thing did NOT want to take the update. Going down to 2.3.5, then OTA to 2.3.6 FINALLY allowed me to OTA to ICS. Thanks everyone!
