OTA ICS update "The software update failed" - Motorola Atrix 2

I have a stock rooted Atrix 2. I rooted it literally yesterday (10/9/12) using the once-click method by jimmy's thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1327741). I have tried to update to ICS with wifi 3 times already. My last attempt, I unrooted the phone, removed bootstrap and even factory reset it. I still get "The software update failed."
What am I doing wrong here? I know there are a few others who are having this problem, but with all the problems in one single thread, it is hard to find an exact answer.

You had the A2 bootstrap installed? That's the problem if you didn't remove the files from the /system/bin folder.. if it was the A2 Bootstrap from here, then do this:
-Go to manage apps and clear data and uninstall the A2 Bootstrap app
-Go to /system/bin and delete hijack and logwrapper files
-Rename logwrapper.bin to logwrapper (also in /bin folder)
-Reboot

You will need to re-root.. but just being rooted should not affect your OTA install. Also, if you do have root, go and check /cache/recovery/last_log to see why the install fails exactly.

I just flashed back to 2.3.5. then updated to 2.3.6. OTA and currently right now I am downloading the OTA ICS. If flashing back to 2.3.5. then updating to 2.3.6. to 4.0.4. I will try your method. To be honest, I am new to rooting and what not. I have done so lightly in the past, 2 years ago, but I'm back at it.

Okay I fixed it...on the 5th update. After flashing back to stock rom to 2.3.5 with RSD, then OTA to 2.3.6. then finally OTA to ICS 4.0.4! ICS is pretty awesome. I am really happy with it
XDA forums is awesome, a lot of helpful sticky threads!

Thank you your advice was very helpful in updating my son's phone

You will need to get RSDlite and flash the phone again with 2.3.5 to STOCK. Then just update to 2.3.6 and finally 4.0.4.
If you are in ICS leak 2 you need to downgrade "ICS TO GB" with Jim's tool. It has the .bat file to do so in cmd or you can also use the same file and flash with RSD.

^That will cause soft-bricks. DO NOT use Jim's tool if you are on ICS leak#2 or soak test or final ICS (all the same).
If you meant to say the first ICS leak, then, yes, by all means use Jim's tool to fxz back to GB.

Right... and that leads me to another point (not directed directly at you, of course): If anyone who has installed the ICS leak#1 ota package later flashes a ROM from the dev section based on Leak#2 or Final ICS, that changes nothing in terms of the bootloader - and you are still on Leak#1, and you may use jim's fxz/script package to downgrade to GB.

i'm having the same issues too so once you figure it out on here im going to be ecstatic

Your mount_ext3.sh has been modified from stock - you need to replace it.
Or FXZ back to stock..

Great info and got me where I could update my phone. Thanks to all.
My Atrix 2 was rooted of course and reason I could not get update...
Know this may be off subject a bit... but wondering if anyone could point a noob to place where I can re-root after updating to new at&t update for the atrix 2? Searching for this info, but amount returned is bit overwhelming.
Hoping someone that has been successful can point me in right direction.
Thanks again for help on getting new update!

Unable to update to 2.3.6 "assert failed: apply_patch_check" Help

Every time I try to update my phone it get update failed. I even went to the motorola website and downloaded the file, I put it on root of my sd card and it even failed though that.
I believe its because when I rooted my phone I deleted AABSync.apk and now have no way of getting it back. Would anyone be able to send me theirs or would know where I can get it somewhere online. I already tried to search for it but without any luck. Even after I do a factory reset/clear I would still be unable to upgrade. This is the following I get;

Has any of the bloatware been removed? If so, that's the problem. You're gonna have to flash the 2.3.5 fxz first then do the 2.3.6 OTA update.

[Q] Return AT&T Atrix 2 to Stock (2.3.6)?

I am having the same problem with Contacts and with process com.motorola.contacts force closing that many others are having. I had rooted as well as uninstalled bloatware (instead of freezing, yes, I know!). Tried unrooting, reinstalling Yahoo and AT&T apps as suggested, factory resets, everything. Contacts still acts the same; that is, I can get to it but can't edit individual contacts nor get to Contacts Storage. I think it must have something to do with AT&T Address Book, which won't reinstall (says not supported but was there before).
At this point I just want to return Atrix 2 to its stock, 2.3.6 configuration and start all over. Can anyone help me, or is that not "out" yet?
Follow the instructions on flashing the 2.3.5 FXZ listed here (the beginner's guide) and then use the OTA update to get to 2.3.6. Next time make a CWM backup before you try any ROMs! It is inevitable that you'll eventually get stuck in some sort of boot loop.

I will try that. It looks pretty complicated...I'll be studying for awhile!
It's not hard at all! Just follow the instructions listed EXACTLY and make sure that your battery is well charged before you do this -- if it dies during the middle of something like this, you could run into a tricky problem.

It's alot easier than it sounds....and im no pro. I was able to successfully flash 2.3.5 to mine that way the first time around following the instructions in the noob thread.
Atrix 2//RebelROM//Tapatalk 2
so let me get this straight....
I had 2.3.5 rooted. I accepted the OTA update to 2.3.6, so naturally, it un-rooted me, although the superuser is still there. I tried the one click method for 2.3.6 after it came out, as I am a total NOOB and was afraid to try it and screw things up. That doesn't work. I tried to unroot it using the same method. Also didn't work. The superuser is still there and denying permissions.
Soooooooo, I have decided to do the FXZ method in the in the noob/general forum. I'm still unclear and afraid about how to do it. Am I supposed to go through the first 11 steps, then do the "replace" step that is added as a note? Speaking of the added note. It says to "move all the the items in it to the stock fxz". The "stock FXZ" is what i downloaded and did in step 1-11, right? I have searched the forums and this was the best place I could see to ask. Sorry for my extreme NOOBness.
Thanks in advance for helping, or just taking the timpe to read my post!

If you have problem reverting from 2.3.6 to stock 2.3.5, this might help

NOTE: this is from 2.3.6 to stock 2.3.5. NOTHING RELATED TO ICS DOWNGRADE.
I hope my experience on reverting back to stock 2.3.5/2.3.6 can help other people with similar problem.
I was running Romulus V2.0 (Android 2.3.6). I wanted to update to Leaked ICS or prepare for future ICS official update. So I need to revert back to stock 2.3.6.
The method Jim suggested is (1) FXZ to 2.3.5. (2) OTA to 2.3.6. But when I use RSD to flash 2.3.5 FXZ (precisely following the beginner's guide, download InlineFlashing_edison_5.5.175.16_cfc_p3_APBP_CID285.zip and replace files in "replace.zip"), I get "Invalid CG version". My next try is to follow the guide in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1493386, and my phone is alive again. However, I cannot do a factory reset, so I still cannot go back to stock 2.3.6.
After a lot of searching, I was able to find another "replacement package". Its linke is http://www.mediafire.com/?3bs8ovqteawab02, named "replaceFilesInFXZ.zip". I replaced files in InlineFlashing_edison_5.5.175.16_cfc_p3_APBP_CID285.zip with files in this package. My phone boots without problem and is on stock 2.3.5. I also have OTAed to 2.3.6.
I think this could be helpful for those that want to revert back to stock 2.3.5/2.3.6, and be able to update to ICS. If you are on 2.3.6, I think it is safe to take a try, since there is no hard brick problem as long as you do not flash ICS leak.
---------------------------
I was thinking why some people can FXZ 2.3.5 following the beginner's guide but some people cannot. One possible case could be (please correct me if I am wrong):
I was on stock 2.3.5, but has never OTAed to 2.3.6. I was always using bootstrap recovery to flash other's customized 2.3.6 rom. Therefore, some files such as CDT.bin, boot.img, recovery.img, device_tree.bin and lbl was never updated to 2.3.6 version.
When I follow the beginner's guide, I think this guide assumes that everyone has ever OTAed to 2.3.6 before. So some inconsistency happens.

Did you update to ICS or not? That does not appear to mentioned at all in your post... It just says that you are on 2.3.6 and not ICS... that really does not help all here if that is the case... those bricking have ALL installed the AT&T ICS leak, and tried to fxz back to 2.3.5...
So.... I am sure that what you mention does not really do any good since you appear to NEVER have installed the OTA ICS leak for AT&T, this really does not help...

In fact, this is REALLY not the same thing as the sticky one!!!!! Especially the beginner's guide.
People have problem reverting back, that's why there is a post also sticked "2.3.6 from modified 2.3.5 Flashboot: "Invalid CG Version" FIX"
But these people will want to go back to full stock 2.3.5 with the ability to do OTA and recovery.
That's the reason I post this.

I am currently running gingerbread stock never had another ROM, or any non default zip installed. After about 25% of the way into the update it reboots and tells me that the update failed. I believe it could have to do with the bootstrap or root. Anybody have any tips?

I suggest you to read this forum. Its likely that bootstrap causing the problem. As explained on that thread either you have to clean up bootstrap installations or you have fxz back to 2.3.6(there should be noob thread explains as how to do fxz) and get the OTA for ICS.

It has nothing to do with fortune. Everyone makes a conscious decision to modify or not modify their phones.

[Q] Motorola Atrix 2 Baseband gone no red, no radio

Best regards and happy day, I am writing to see if they can solve my problem ...
I have a Motorola Atrix 2 MB865 Unlocked AT & T
movistar worked perfectly with me, i from venezuela, I have version 2.3.6 of GB, worked fine
when I wanted to upgrade to ICS from xda I downloaded the following file:
Blur_Version.55.28.37.MB865.MERetail.en.06.
following the steps of the guide, I put it on my sd, go into recovery mode,
and ready, this in ICS, excellent guide.
performed the same steps on the phone to my girlfriend and gave me a full upgrade error: assert failed (status 7) installation aborted reboot now, and the phone restarts, when you turn on again ... the phone gives a window saying the update failed, and from there started my problem with the equipment, I no recognize the sim,
Software does not recognize IMEI or BASEBAND
Radio off
no IMEI, no baseband, and the phone restarts every 4min exactly please my team hope to have a solution ....
I hope I can please give solution to the problem ...
Best Regards
I had a similar problem and I never fixed it on 2.3.5.
The only thing that worked was to install the ICS leak...
This type of problem usually happens when you want to install searet on mearet or similar...
Alright, let's start with the basics...
You need to be careful what OTA you try to install on what firmware. If the phone is an ATT phone then only install the ATT update; if its an international phone, only install the international update.
That said, it sounds like you are getting your firmwares mixed up. If you have an ATT A2, then the MERetail ICS will not install on it. You probably installed the ATT update...
But if your girlfriend's phone isn't an ATT phone then the ATT update won't install on it...
Can you supply the full "E: assert failed" error? What does your girlfriend's phone say under Settings->About Phone->System Version? What does you phone say under the same place?

Damn I have the same problem and it is my GF phone so I am really screwed. I had her phone on the ICS leak 1 and today check for for an OTA not remembering that I had her on a leak, said it was a 43MB xxxxxx.123 to .125 updated, it seem to fail half way during install and the said install software fail. Baseband was gone and it reboot ever 4 min. Update keeps failing. I used the scripts on here to go back to GB (worked) but still same issue. So I used official OTA, 223mb and the update failed and I still have the problem, now sitting on GB 2.3.6

Looks like the update fails with
Updating STE BP
assert failed: motorola.steflash("/tmp/steflash")
When using recovery

of course:
the assert is:
updating STE BP..
assert Failed: motorola.stefllash ("/tmp/steflash")
E;Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip
installatin aborted.
the actually Settings->About Phone->System Version is:
55.11.16.MB865.ATT.en.US
because i return to original firmware but the problem continues..

OTA or installing the leak of course does not work for me because of
updating STE BP..
assert Failed: motorola.stefllash ("/tmp/steflash")
E;Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip
installation aborted.

Have you tried flashing just the radio.img file from the AT&T version, with moto-fastboot?
That is what I would do in this case. The at&t fxz from 2.3.6 should work and flash just fine using moto-fastboot.
If that does not work, then I really dont know what to tell you, and I am not even sure if you can fxz back at this point, to get an at&t image back on it, just hope that the radio image fixes it other wise you have an expensive brick.

I've tried that and it doesn't workout. Since my phone is still under warranty I'm sending it back to Motorola. I don't see any way to fix this without unlocking the bootloader which we can't do. It seems that the partition somehow got the wrong size or being detected the wrong size. It's too bad that Motorola doesn't provide a whole image or a way to factory reset to a whole image like Samsung and HTC do on most of their phones.

manually install radio.img using the command
"moto-fastboot flash radio.img Radio"
and the problem persists.... the recovery shows:
installing update ..
Assert Failed: motorola.stefllash ("/ tmp / steflash")
E: Error in / tmp / cache / update.zip
(Status 7)
installation aborted.
i can try with others radios? or only for ATT?

Wait I thought you were having radio issues. What are you trying to flash with stock recovery? I thought you were already on ICS.

Just fxz back to 2.3.6 then try and install that file right after returning to stock.
